A/N: So this chapter was almost impossible to split up. There really wasn't a great place to do it, so the next chapter picks up exactly where this one leaves off and I should have it finished up and posted very soon.
The morning came far too soon for Kagome, and not just because she wasn’t a particularly early riser. She knew it was important that she learn as much about controlling her powers as possible but she still didn’t like the idea of being around people who were so completely prejudiced against youkai, especially since most of them felt that hanyou were even worse, something unnatural, an impurity. She reached over to find the other side of the bed cool and empty and sat up with a small frown.
“Good, you’re up,” InuYasha said as he strolled into the room carrying a breakfast tray.
She smiled at the thoughtfulness of the gesture but wasn’t entirely sure she’d be able to eat.
As if he could read her mind he said, “I kept it light, but you definitely need to try and eat a little something. Think of how embarrassed you’d be if your stomach started making noises while you were training.”
“I know you’re right, and thank you,” she said as he set the tray across her lap.
He leaned down and she giggled as she realized he was waiting for her to show her gratitude with a kiss. Once she had obliged him he grinned and then sat down by her feet. She ate her miso and rice, pushing the small dish of pickles towards him. He didn’t hesitate to pick up it up and he also somehow had known to have his chopsticks handy which confirmed her suspicions that he’d actually added them to the tray for himself.
“I was gonna get you up early so we could go get you some robes, but a delivery arrived just a few minutes ago from Sesshomaru, with a set he had made for you,” InuYasha said. “Aparently it’s got some special fabric or something that’s supposed to be able to deflect bladed weapons and arrows or something.”
“Wow, I didn’t know there was such a thing,” she said.
“Well, just because it’s supposed to do all that, doesn’t mean you should go getting into any knife fights,” he teased.
“I’ll try not to,” she said. “So, I was thinking since we seem to have some extra time on our hands that you might be interested in letting me give you a proper thank you for my breakfast in bed.”
“Is that so?” he asked.
“Of course if you’d rather not…” She let her voice trail off as he picked up the tray and set it on the floor beside the bed.
He urged her onto her back with his body as his mouth moved across her jaw. “It’s probably a good idea anyway, so you’ll be more relaxed. I’d be doing you a favor really.”
She laughed as she wrapped her arms around him. “Then I’ll still owe you one, how about that?”
“Works for me,” he agreed.
Kagome looked at the imposing structure before her. She’d definitely been completely relaxed after making love with InuYasha and had managed to hold onto that contentment through putting on her miko’s robes and even on the way to the spiritualist headquarters, but now the butterflies in her stomach had returned in full force.
InuYasha laid a hand on the small of her back. “You’ve got this,” he told her. “Give ‘em hell for me.”
Kagome nodded, straightening her shoulders and lifting her head before ascending the stairs. She glanced back once at him and he gave her an encouraging nod. She could do this. There was nothing tainted or dirty about her love for InuYasha and she wouldn’t be made to feel like there was, not for anything and if they didn’t like it then that was too damn bad. She opened the door and headed inside. She crossed the great room and stood before the reception desk, pointedly ignoring all the stares she was getting from those standing around.
The woman lifted her head and her eyes widened. “Who are you? And where did you get that necklace.”
Kagome set the paper on the desk and cleared her throat. “My name is Higurashi Kagome and I’m here for my first day of training. I’m supposed to be seeing Kaede miko-sama.”
“Uh, gross, she is drenched in youki,” a female voice said from behind her. “It’s even inside her.”
“Inside her?” a male voice asked.
A different female spoke next. “Why would they let the whore of a youkai enlist shikon class? Can you even imagine having sex with an animal like that?”
Kagome’s back stiffened. She spun to face the trio. “Actually, he’s a hanyou not a youkai, and I assure you having sex with him is less like having sex with an animal and more like a source of divine inspiration.”
The just gaped at her as an elderly woman with an eye patch shuffled over. “You must be Higurashi Kagome. Your hanyou, inu if I am not mistaken is quite possessive I see.”
Kagome sighed. “Listen I came here to learn to control my powers better. If you want to teach me then I want to learn and I will follow your instruction to the best of my abilities but I will not listen to hate speech against youkai or remain quiet while someone makes racist remarks against InuYasha, who is probably a better man than anyone here.”
To her surprise the elderly miko laughed. “You have spirit, child, something we desperately need more of around here. I am Kaede and I think perhaps there is much I can learn from you as well, but first we must evaluate you.”
“Will it be an open test, Kaede-sama?” a young woman asked.
“Unless of course she’s afraid,” the first woman who called her gross said. “Her powers are probably weak if she even still has them after giving herself to a hanyou.”
“Botan, that will be enough out of you,” Kaede said harshly.
“It’s okay Kaede-sama,” Kagome told her. “If tests are usually done with an audience then that will be fine. I may not have the technical skills I hope to learn here but I am confident in my power.”
“So be it,” Kaede said. “Follow me and we will begin.”
Kagome tried not to let her nerves show as the stadium like area quickly filled with people. All three classes were represented and she scolded herself mentally for letting her temper get the best of her. Oh well, it was too late to do anything about that now. She would just have to show them all what she was capable of.
“Can you shoot a bow, child?” Kaede asked.
Kagome nodded. “I was on the archery team in high school and college. I placed first in the nationals two years in a row.”
“A master then,” Kaede said. “That was not in your file.”
“I was at one point but I never requalified and I’m probably a bit rusty,” she replied.
“No matter,” Kaede told her. “You will shoot six arrows down range at the target. The target itself will measure the level of spiritual power you charge them with no matter where you hit it. We need to gauge your control as well so start slow and increase the charge with each arrow. You may select any bow from the rack and then begin.”
Kagome nodded and went over to the line of bows. She closed her eyes and ran her fingers across each one as she walked down the row until she found one that spoke to her. She picked up and liked the way it felt in her hand. She drew it back and found the weight to be near perfect and was glad that she was almost back at full strength after her time with InuYasha.
She stood on the line and took a slow deep breath. This was no different than an archery competition or so she told herself. She pulled an arrow out of the quiver in front of her. She focused her mind, listened to her breathing and all the noise faded into nothing. She knocked the arrow and then willed just enough energy into it to light the head. She took aim and then let go as she exhaled.
The numbers over the target meant nothing to her so she ignored them, moving on to the second arrow. The first had hit about two centimeters right of center and this one would hit two centimeters left. She increased the power of each arrow firing the third just above center and the fourth just below. Perfect. She didn’t even need to block out the crowd anymore since they had all fallen silent. She charged the fifth arrow with about half of her maximum strength and then released it. It stuck dead center and she heard more than a few gasps.
Now she was in her grove. She took the final arrow and put as much power into as she could. The bow in her hands was nearly vibrating with it as was the arrow and she had to squint against it’s glow. She focused on the trail of power left by her fifth arrow and lined the sixth up with it exactly. As soon as she released she knew it was going to be a perfect shot. She let her bow arm drop and watched as it split the arrow in the center and a satisfied smile spread across her face. She didn’t notice the way the numbers above the target spun unable to calculate the power of her last arrow. Apparently she wasn’t that rusty after all. She wanted to throw her head back and scream, how do you like me now, but she managed to contain the urge.
Kaede shuffled back over to her. “Most impressive. I think there shall be no more doubts about your power. You are not shikon class.”
Kagome frowned. Could it be that she didn’t do as well as she thought? “I’m not? I can probably put a little more into if I tried. If that would make a difference.”
“You misunderstand, child,” Kaede told her. “You are Midori class in both your skill with the bow and your power.”
“I’ve never heard of Midori class,” Kagome said.
Kaede nodded. “As is to be expected since there has not been a Midori class miko in more than five centuries. Can you create a barrier?”
Kagome shook her head. “I’ve tried a few times on my own, but I’ve never been able to do it.”
“What have you been able to do then?” Kaede questioned.
“Um, I can make ofuda that work and enchant rosaries, pretty much anything that has to do with imbuing objects with my power,” Kagome replied. “I can sense youki and can usually tell how old a youkai is based on that I can call my power into my hands and hold it there and I can use it to help give a little boost to the body’s natural ability to repair itself.”
“Bullshit,” someone yelled. “No one can tell how old a youkai is by the feel of their youki and they can’t use their powers to heal physical injuries.”
Kagome scowled. How dare whoever that was call her a liar? “Well, I can. Maybe you just aren’t as good with your powers as you think you are. Jerk!”
“Prove it,” another said.
“I would but I don’t see any youkai around here,” she yelled back. “You want to let me stab you with an arrow so I can demonstrate my power that way!”
Kaede chuckled. “Not an easy path you have chosen, child, but there is much strength in you, enough to walk it, I think. Can you truly do as you say?”
Kagome nodded. “I mean I can’t tell you, hey this youkai is two hundred and sixteen years three months and six days old or anything, but I can get close and I can definitely put a group of them in order from youngest to oldest and tell you what feels unique about their youki.”
“Would you be willing to demonstrate?” Kaede asked. “There are several youkai being held here for various crimes. I can have them brought out and a truthfinder to verify if you have aged them correctly.”
“If you want me to, I will,” Kagome replied.
Kagome stood blindfolded. She could feel five distinct youki. Two were young, very young and she was fairly certain one of the young ones was a hanyou. There was one very old and fading. The last two were both in their prime but one felt close to InuYasha’s age and another was closer to Sesshomaru’s.
She took a deep breath and started with the youngest. “The one in the middle is practically a baby. I don’t know what he could have done but it’s disgusting to have him as a prisoner. His youki is so bright and warm but sad too.” She paused. There was something so familiar in the feel of his youkai. “He’s inu youkai isn’t he and there is no thread of adult youki weaved through his so he must be an orphan. What kind of despicable person locks up a little orphaned boy?”
“Move on, child,” Kaede said quietly.
She snorted but went on to the next. “First in line, a hanyou, pre pubescent but older than the boy. Her youki is soft, but mischievous and sad too. What the hell is going on here? Do you round up orphan youkai who don’t have anyone to protect them? Does the Youkai no Taishou know about this?”
“Kagome-sama,” Kaede prompted with a sigh.
“Fine end of the line. He’s ancient. His youki is pale but it wasn’t always. It used to burn and there is still a hint of that. So far we have kids and the elderly. Wow, really dangerous prisoners you have here,” Kagome snapped. “Last two. Beside the hanyou is a woman definitely fully matured but still very young by youkai standards, nearing forty I would say. Her youki is strange, definitely not animal spirit. I want to call it wild like the wind and the last one is over a hundred but not by too much. His youki is slippery.”
“Damn she is good,” a woman said, her voice like velvet. “But it is not like the wind miko, I am the wind.”
“Quiet youkai,” someone commanded.
Kagome pulled off the blindfold as the youkai woman made a pained sort of hiss. She glared at the priest and went and pulled the ofuda that was burning her chest off the female youkai. She held it up and it burst into flames disintegrating in her hand. The youkai pursed her lips and blew the ash right in the priests face.
He pulled out more ofuda and Kagome called her power into her hand then flicked her wrist setting them all on fire before turning her attention back to the youkai. “What’s your name?”
“Kagura, miko-sama,” the woman replied.
“What did you do, Kagura?” Kagome asked.
“I did not allow a gang of thugs to rape me,” she answered. “The priest with them was even weaker than that one. He underestimated me and still I allowed him to live and yet I am the one being punished.”
“Well truthseeker?” Kagome questioned.
The young monk looked at Kaede. “She speaks true.”
Kagome harumphed and then knelt in front of the little inu youkai. “And may I have your name sweet pup?”
“Kouta,” he replied. “I don’t like it here. I’m sorry I stole the food, but I was so hungry. I tried to hunt but my father was just starting to teach me.”
“Miko-sama, I want to go home to my mother,” the hanyou girl said with a sniff. “I didn’t want to use my tricks to help those bad men, but they said they’d hurt her it I didn’t.”
Kagome stood up. “So we have a hungry kid, another who was coerced, and a woman who defended herself against being sexually assaulted. Did any of you actually do anything wrong?”
“I impregnated a kakera class miko,” the snake said. “When they found out they made her say that I forced her, but it’s a fucking lie. I could taste what they did to her to make her turn against me. Even now they have her locked away until our hatchling is born.”
“And you?” Kagome asked the ancient youkai gently.
“You smell of inu hanyou,” he said. “I recognize that scent. How is that reckless pup? Is he still doing his brother’s dirty work. Always did think he was too good for that. They said I can’t make youkai weapons anymore, took me from my forge.”
“You know InuYasha?” she questioned.
“All his life,” the youkai replied. “Name’s Totosai, demon blacksmith to the great dog lords for ten generations.”
“Well, I’ve heard enough,” Kagome said turning to Kaede. “You need to release them and the kakera class miko too or I am going to call the Youkai no Taishou and tell him what is going on here and we can just see what he has to say about it.”
“I cannot do that, child,” Kaede told her. “I have not the power to issue such a command.”
“Who does?” Kagome demanded.
“Before today it would have been Tsubaki-sama,” Kaede replied. “Now there is another who has surpassed her rank and by law exists outside the control of the system. Midori class miko answer to no one but the kami-sama themselves.”
Kagome’s eyes widened and Kaede gave a small nod. She turned to the youkai. “I want your word, all of you, that you will leave here in peace once you are released.”
“As long as I get Sakura-chan, and she and our hatchling are okay then I will walk away and not look back,” the snake youkai said. “I will consider the scales balanced, miko-sama”
“And should we wish to take up this grievance with the youkai no taishou?” Kagura asked.
“Telling him what happened is fine. In fact you all probably should go to him and tell him. I just don’t want any fighting here,” Kagome said. “And you two little ones are coming with me. We’ll try to get you back where you belong, but until then you’ll be safe with me, I promise.”
Once they had all agreed she went down the line touching their shackles so that they dropped to the ground. Kouta lifted his arms and she picked him up. He smelled her as he pressed his face against her throat. The little hanyou girl grabbed onto her hakama as many of those gathered cried out in protest.
“She can’t do that!” someone yelled.
“Yes, she can,” another said. “We all saw her. She is midori class, gifted beyond all others by the kami-sama and law unto herself.”
“Someone go and bring the kakera miko, named Sakura,” Kagome said. “The rest of you come with me before someone gets a bright idea to try and attack you all.”
