Kagome knocked on the door confidently. She knew in her heart that she had nothing to worry about, as a guest in their home, InuYasha and Sesshomaru were honor bound to see to her safety. The door opened and standing before her was a tiny green youkai who she would have guessed to be well over five hundred years old judging by the feel of you his youki.
“May I present The Great Miko, Higurashi Kagome-sama,” the youkai announced.
She offered him a small bow. “Thank you.”
She kept a smile on her face as she entered the main room and Sesshomaru came over to greet her. A part of her was a little disappointed that InuYasha had not come over with him, though she knew it was probably for the best. With so many people around the chances that someone would see what was between them was too great. She could feel all eyes on her and knew that she had to make a good impression. She bowed deeply to her youkai host.
“Miko-sama, thank you for accepting my invitation,” Sesshomaru said.
“It is my honor, Sesshomaru-sama,” she replied.
“If you will come with me I can introduce you to clan leaders who have chosen to join us this evening,” he told her.
She nodded and followed him as he led her around the room. She made sure to be exceptionally polite as she was introduced and committed each of their names to memory. She also was sure to remember the order in which they had been introduced knowing that Sesshomaru would have gone in order of rank or importance so as not to offend anyone.
In each room they entered she found herself scanning for InuYasha, but it wasn’t until they reached the last that she saw him. He was leaning against the wall in the corner, talking to a very pretty young woman. He sensed her and glanced her way, offering her a small nod of acknowledgement before returning his attention the silver haired beauty he was talking to.
It took quite an effort not to let her confusion or her concern show on her face as she made small talk with the last youkai lord she had been introduced to. He was much more welcoming than any of the others had been and she forced herself to pay attention to him no matter how much she wanted to know who the mysterious woman who had captured InuYasha’s attention so thoroughly was.
“I have wanted to thank you as well, Miko-sama,” Kaito, leader and lord of the crane youkai.
She blinked. “Oh, for what?”
“Kasume, the young girl you saved after the horrible explosion was of my clan,” he told her. “She is my niece, daughter of my youngest brother. We may not be a clan of influence or power, but we do not forget when a debt is owed and have the wisdom to know when we have been wrong. We will support a treaty Miko-sama with what little power we have.”
“Thank you,” she told him with all sincerity. “I truly am glad I was able to save her, and I am grateful for your support.”
It was then that the small youkai appeared and announced that dinner was about to be served. Kaito-sama offered her his elbow and she slipped her hand through his arm, allowing him to escort her to the table. There were place cards at each setting and she sought out her name, starting at the end of the table where Kaito-sama had been placed and working her way up towards the head. She found her card three seats down on the left and took her seat.
As everyone sat she noticed that InuYasha was given the first place on Sesshomaru’s right and that the young woman he had been speaking to before was seated next to him. A sharp pain went through her heart wondering if she might not be one of his lovers, or perhaps even more than that. She put on a smile and forced those thoughts away. Even if she was, it really was none of her business. She had no claim on him and it was stupid to let herself hope that she ever would.
The food was served and for the most part the conversation was pleasant that was until a very large youkai, whom she remembered as Lord Mamoru of the Black Bear Clan, posed to her a question.
“So Miko how do you feel about hanyou?” he asked.
She frowned a little noticing at once that the rest of the table had fallen silent. “I’m sorry, but I am not sure I understand the question.”
Mamoru looked at her like she was an idiot. “Are they not an abomination to your eyes, an offence to your sense of purity?”
Kagome felt her anger stir. “Honestly, Mamoru-sama I find the idea of hanyou to be beautiful. I do not know very many hanyou but the ones I do know were born from love, the great love between a human and a youkai that was strong enough to overcome all their many differences, and it gives me hope that there can be lasting peace between our two peoples, if we want it badly enough. I would also appreciate it if you would refrain from presuming to speak to my feelings until you actually know me and not just what you may have heard and in return I will show you the same courtesy.”
“You go, Miko-sama,” the young woman beside InuYasha said quietly, flashing her a smile.
“Shut your mouth, half-breed,” Lord Shinobu of the leopard youkai snapped. “No one was talking to you.”
Kagome watched as InuYasha stood up with a snarl, fangs bared. He was furious and she couldn’t blame him, but she was still worried about what might happen. She had to clamp down on her own power as the youki coming from the two men swelled.
“She is a guest here as much as you and you will apologize or I will gut you right here at the table and serve your flesh as part of the meal you fish breathed son of a stray,” InuYasha said with a low growl.
“You dare to call me out you filthy cur,” Shinobu-sama demanded as he came to his feet. “Your father should have killed you the second you slipped out of that human whore you called a mother.”
Kagome shivered as at last Sesshomaru made his presence known. His youki was vast and fierce and it sent a chill up her spine. She couldn’t help it as her reiki blossomed in response, ready to protect her if need be. Both InuYasha and the Leopard fell silent.
“Shinobu, you have never been an ally but until now I did not think you a complete idiot,” Sesshomaru said. “You forget to whom you are speaking. Hanyou though he may be my brother is still more of a youkai than you or any of your ilk. I rescind your invitation to my home and it would be wise that I not see you again before you have written a formal apology to everyone at this table for your behavior this evening. I suggest you leave at once before InuYasha makes good on his threat.”
Kagome could tell the leopard youkai wanted nothing more than to leap across the table and attack InuYasha, but somehow he managed to get control of himself.
“You will all be sorry,” he hissed. “My people will not suffer this insult lightly.”
Then, just like that it was over. The leopard youkai left in a flash and everyone went back to their meals. Kagome wondered if such displays were common place since no one seemed to feel any need to comment on what had happened. Though, perhaps it was the desire not to anger Sesshomaru further that kept them from speaking on it.
She glanced down the table again and found herself more than a little jealous. InuYasha must care a great deal about the hanyou girl beside him to have defended her so resolutely and with such ferocity. Even still she could not fault him for finding someone he could have a real relationship with, someone who could understand him so completely, if that was the case. Maybe this was a good thing, seeing him with her now. It gave her a tangible reason to distance herself from him.
“I hope you can forgive me, Miko-sama,” Lord Mamoru said quietly. “I am old enough to know that I should not accept rumor as fact, especially when my own experience has told me otherwise. I would like to show you something.”
She reached across the table and took the small note from him only to discover that it was not a note, but the photograph of a young boy with busy black hair and an adorable gap toothed smile. She had to look closely to see the two round furry ears hiding in his messy hair. She ran her fingertip lightly over the photo and looked back to Mamoru-sama with a smile.
She held the photo out to him. “Your son?”
He nodded. “I hope you can understand now my earlier hostility. As you just witnessed there are still many who do not accept hanyou, even though Sesshomaru-sama and InuYasha-sama have done much towards changing that.”
She nodded. “I don’t yet have a child of my own, but I know in my heart there is nothing I would not do to protect them if I did. I am certain that your son will grow up to be a credit to both his youkai half and his human one. I meant what I said before.”
“I do not doubt that Miko-sama,” he told her. “The black bears will support a treaty between our peoples, you have my word.”
Kagome smiled and nodded her thanks. She glanced to the head of the table to see Sesshomaru watching her with an unreadable expression. She hoped that she hadn’t said something she shouldn’t have before, but she wouldn’t apologize for speaking the truth as she saw it. She would apologize for her small part in causing the leopard youkai to anger, but that was all.
When dinner was finished she found that many of the youkai were much warmer to her than they had been before. Several sought her out wanting to speak with her and to seek her opinion on issues relating to the future between them and what laws might be passed to insure the peace. She tried to speak as honestly as she could and hoped that they would recognize her sincerity.
She didn’t know how long it had been when she excused herself to get a drink, but she couldn’t help but to think that the evening had gone better than she had hoped in spite of the near fight at dinner. Her heart was buoyed with hope for the future even if she felt the personal loss of her foolish hopes towards InuYasha.
“Hello, Miko-sama. My name is Shiori and I’ve been trying to get a moment to speak with you, but you’ve been surrounded by those antiques all night.”
Kagome tried to cover her laugh with a cough as she looked at the hanyou. The girl’s eyes were sparkling with mischief. “What did you wish to speak with me about?”
Shiori glanced around the room. “Would you accompany me somewhere a bit more private?”
Kagome considered it. It was true that she didn’t know the young hanyou woman but it was clear that InuYasha valued and trusted her and she didn’t feel in any way threatening. “Okay.”
Kagome followed Shiori down the hall and into the last room on the right. She closed the door behind her and found that they were in the most lavish bathroom she had ever seen. She didn’t know why on earth you would need a sofa and chairs in the restroom, but it was convenient for their conversation. Kagome took a seat in one of the high backed chairs while Shiori sat on one of the arms of the sofa.
“So what was it you wanted to talk to me about?” Kagome asked.
“Mostly I just wanted to know how long you’ve been in love with my Inu-onii-chan?” Shiori replied.
Kagome thought her heart might stop. Had InuYasha said something to her? No, he wouldn’t have. Had she done something to give away their secret? She didn’t know how to react. Her only option was to deny it.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Kagome said, knowing that it sounded false, but unable to do anything else.
Shiori moved so that she was seated on the sofa right across from Kagome and looked her in the eyes. “You can trust me. I would never betray Inu-onii-chan.”
Kagome swallowed hard, and realized that she had now twice referred to InuYasha as she would a brother. At least she didn’t have to worry about her having been his lover anymore. “How did you know?”
Shiori smiled warmly. “I saw the way you looked at me when he stood up for me at dinner. You were wondering who I was to him and if I might be competition. More than that though, I can see.”
“Oh no. Was I so obvious? Who else noticed?” Kagome questioned.
“Relax, miko-sama,” Shiori said gently. “No one was looking at you but me. Your secret is safe.”
Kagome allowed herself to relax a little at the hanyou girl’s words. “You said you can see, as in you have the gift of sight?”
Shiori nodded. “Though, there are times when it is less a gift and more a curse. I was hoping you might let me help you. Maybe I can see something of your future if you are open to it.”
“What would I need to do?” Kagome asked.
“Nothing, just give me your hand and I’ll do the rest,” Shiori replied.
Kagome’s hand was shaking as she held it out to the girl. Shiori took her hand and then closed her eyes. All at once the young woman’s body went stiff and her eyes moved rapidly behind their lids. Her grip tightened almost painfully and she began to shake. Kagome was just about to call for help when Shiori released her hand and opened her eyes. She was panting and looked a little green.
“Are you okay?” Kagome asked.
Shiori nodded. “I just need a minute. I’ve never seen someone with so many possible futures before. I have to sort them all out.”
Not knowing what else to do Kagome got up and dampened a wash cloth with cool water and filled one of the small cups by the sink with the same. She returned to Shiori and offered them to her. With a smile and thanks the young bat hanyou took them both. After she got a few drinks she let her head fall back against the sofa and put the cloth on her forehead. Several moments passed before she finally lifted her head.
“Okay, I’m okay now,” she said. “First, I have to know, have you told Inu-onii-chan how you feel?”
Kagome bit her lip and shook her head. “It hasn’t, I mean we haven’t, we never made any promises to each other.”
“It wouldn’t be the first time two people fell in love after they fell into bed,” Shiori said without a trace of embarrassment. “Though, it is a problem. You have to tell him and you have to trust him otherwise we’re all screwed.”
“What do you mean?” Kagome asked.
“Whoever this bastard is that is trying to keep this war going, he is evil, and I mean pure evil,” she explained. “All the futures where you defeat him are futures in which you and Inu-onii-chan stand united, not just in purpose, but in mind and in spirit. If you stop trusting each other, or let doubt drive you apart then evil wins and the war destroys us all, human and youkai.”
Kagome believed in divination, how could she not being a miko herself, and she believed that Shiori was telling her the truth, but could she really confess to InuYasha. She looked at her hands as they lay folded in her lap. Could she bear it if he didn’t feel anything more for her than sexual attraction?
“He loves you too, you know,” Shiori said quietly. “You weren’t the only one sneaking glances when you thought no one else was looking. I’ve never seen him look at anyone the way he looks at you.”
Kagome lifted her head. “How can you be sure?”
“Like I said, I can see, but more than that, I know him,” Shiori told her. “I can’t force you to tell him, but I am asking you to. Trust him and let him know what he means to you. You won’t regret it, I promise.”
“I think about it,” Kagome replied.
InuYasha frowned as he searched for Shiori. She had disappeared not too long ago after he had specifically told her to stay close. He didn’t know who he could trust among the other youkai lords and he didn’t want her to have an ‘accident’. It was bad enough that he had to stay away from Kagome to keep himself from doing something stupid and giving them away, but at least Shiori had been able to keep his mind off of that.He turned as he sensed her behind him. “Where the hell did you go?”
She rolled her eyes. “I went to the ladies room, if you must know. I’m a big girl Inu-onii-chan. I can do that much by myself.”
He growled a little but sighed. “Whatever, just don’t disappear again without telling me.”
She nodded. “So, do you think you can slip away now for a little while? It’s been so long since we’ve had a chance to spend any time together. I’d like to catch up.”
He didn’t like the idea of not being nearby if something happened and Kagome ended up needing him, but he knew that Sesshomaru wouldn’t allow any harm to come to her this night, especially not when she had done so much towards the cause of peace without even realizing it. Yeah, they lost the leopards, probably for good, but that was going to happen at some point any way, and the loss itself was minimal when they had gained so much more. The cranes weren’t strong but they were even wealthier than him and Sesshomaru due to their fishing empire and the bears were both strong and fierce and each had pledged their commitment to peace directly to her. That wasn’t even counting those who chose instead to give their support to Sesshomaru directly.
“Yeah, we can go to my rooms,” he told her. “It has been too damn long. I need to make sure I approve of what you’ve been getting up to.”
She snorted not realizing how much she sounded like him, but didn’t comment. He led the way to his private rooms and she followed. Once the door was closed and locked behind them he sat down on his bed and she stood across from him leaning against his dresser.
“So, brat, how’ve you been? That fox been treating you right?” InuYasha asked.
“You know he has or I would have thrown him out on his ass by now,” she replied.
InuYasha laughed. “That’s my girl. So what’s on your mind?”
“Oh, not much,” she said as she picked up the picture of his mother from his dresser. She touched the smiling face and then set it back down. “Just wondering how long you’ve been in love with the great miko.”
“What?” InuYasha nearly shouted. “What the hell gave you a stupid idea like that?”
Shiori sighed and sat beside him on his bed. “Don’t you trust me anymore Inu-onii-chan?”
“Oi, it ain’t like that,” he tried. “You know I trust you.”
“Then trust this, she is in love with you,” Shiori told him. “I talked to her tonight and she let me read her. You have to tell her, if you don’t then there’s no hope at all.”
“What do you mean?” he asked.
“The scrolls are going to lead you to whoever has been trying to keep this war going,” she replied. “He’s old and he’s pure evil and he had something do with how it started. I can’t see enough, but I know that the only chance you have at stopping him is if you and the great miko work together, and have complete faith in each other, without doubt, without reservation. If the two of you do everything right it will change the world and if you don’t then we’re all going to die.”
InuYasha snorted. “But no pressure or anything.”
She giggled. “I have faith in you and in the great miko. I saw who she is and she’s the only woman in this world that is worthy of you. Please tell her, nii-chan.”
“You’re sure about this?” he asked.
Shiori nodded as he put an arm around her shoulders. She reached up and took his hand and a smile spread across her face at what she saw. Yes, her inu-onii-chan and the miko belonged together of that she was certain. “Now, go tell Sesshy-kun that you are going out with me so we can catch up, and then you can go to your miko.”
“Better not let him hear you call him that,” InuYasha said with a laugh.
“What do I look like, an idiot?” she asked.
