When Kagome had tried to put on her own clothes an icy glare met her; it was the Western Lords subtle way of threatening to destroy those clothes as well. She had almost tempted fate with that look but her demon whispered to her subtly ‘If you want him to get you naked simply ask Kagome.’ The remark had instantly stopped her plan of trying anyways so she was left to walk to forest in his outer robes, wearing the colors of the West, and sporting his courting mark so she smelled like him almost fully now with the combination. This was all fine when in the privacy of their traveling party but when they reached the demon villages she felt her confidence waver. She was supposed to be hidden from everyone, and now she was going to draw every eye to her with her attire and scent marked body.
“Sesshomaru, I am unsure about this one.” She couldn’t help but hear the own hint of uncertainty in her voice. She was not used to openly walking into a place like this, as a priestess she was normally kept away from such villages even though she was the Priestess that treated demons fairly.
Sesshomaru glanced down at the normally confident woman and raised an eyebrow. She had been in countless battles, befriended many demons, and survived many trials against Naraku and for a time himself included on the list of things she had faced. The demon villages had one rule and one alone. No disputes in the markets and it was not negotiable; to do so would mean execution by the Lord or Lady of the village. So her panic at entering the market was perplexing to him for a moment until he looked at her in his attire and for a brief moment he was furious that she was shamed to wear his mark and colors.
Kagome had been looking up at him trying to figure out how to explain to him what she was feeling when she saw the emotions play across his face and her demon warned her of what he could possibly be assuming. “It’s not about you. It’s about me. Won’t there be a million questions and rumors about the inufemale with the Western Lord? We are trying to avoid the spread of gossip about me until we reach the mountain and my change is complete.” She could still see the apprehension in his stance, having known him a long enough to see the rigid hint in his stance. “I am proud to wear the courting mark as well as your lands colors, it is merely a size too big for my liking.” She tried to tease at him playfully.
It had been a day since he had taken her ability to wear her own clothing and after her initial anger settled she had seen the brighter side of his “punishment”. By chance when they crossed paths with a demon wandering in their path it never looked at her due to fear of getting Sesshomaru’s wrath, she had heard of demon villages from Sango and knew the rules so the threat of his wrath wasn’t good enough to stop onlookers once they entered the village. She knew Akihiko and Shippo were already in the village and she had trusted her son to buy her appropriate clothing in her measurements so she still couldn’t understand why Sesshomaru wanted her to go down there too! “I don’t want to go down there. I’m still not comfortable with myself yet, still too much to learn. I can’t make both your name and my father’s associated with dishonor.” She whispered the last bit, for the first time feeling just a hint of regret at her words. “I’m still too human.”
When Kagome’s voice softly reached Sesshomaru’s ears he was astonished. “You are part human. You will always be part human but you are also a full blooded demon and you must find the balance between the two.” Kagome wanted to argue with him, but knew he was right, she would always have hints of the human life she had lived for the beginning of her life and the world of demons would have to get used to it.
“I still don’t want to go down there today.” She mumbled, wanting to be defiant. Sesshomaru was unwilling to budge though, he started to walk ahead of her and down the path leading to the village entrance. Kagome, however, didn’t follow him.
“How will your father ever be able to present you if you do not practice Kagome?” he hadn’t intended for her to answer, just to start moving when his logic settled in her brain.
“Shit.” She mumbled, glaring at the back of the Western Lords head.
“Such profanity does not suit a lady of the Southern Mountains.” He scolded, “Nor a lady as pure as you.” He didn’t look back, feeling her catching up to him slowly. “Quit dawdling like a sullen child Kagome.” He felt her anger then and knew he had succeeded.
“Fluffy bastard.” She mumbled but held her head high and shoulders straight as she matched his pace. She was regretting being goaded into doing this with each step but she couldn’t back down now that she had caved; she was going to prove a point. Her demon was amused though, how something as simple as teasing could make the woman do anything would be useful later when she was trying to gain control of the moment.
It took a few minutes to reach the bottom of the trail and Kagome widened her eyes, the gates at the entrance were quite large and she noted they would fit Sesshomaru in his demonic form which made her start to think. “Sesshomaru. When you are in the dog form, who is in charge…you or the demon?”
Her question caught his attention and made him stop his progression towards the village. “We are the same thing, Kagome, you know this.” He watched her nod a bit, knowing she was not fully understanding anything yet. She would not until she shifted for her first time. “Once inside you must contain yourself perfectly. Poise and power are what you must exude and the very fact that you are with me will make this more important. You are a Lady and thus you must act like it, you are a royal so your actions must be well thought out and not rash as I have seen them be. Above all, do not lose control. At all.”
She didn’t have time to respond to him because he was leading her into the village and the ice prince was back. Gone was the warmth she had grown accustomed to so quickly, gone was the relaxed Lord, and the softness in his voice had vanished. ‘I told you that an inumale would only show his female and pups that side of himself.’ Kagome wanted to glare at the demon in herself but refused to look ridiculous glaring at nothing and everyone.
At first Kagome was stunned, the village up close seemed like any other she had traveled through on her journeys. There were stalls with trinkets and knickknacks, stalls with food she had no idea about and some where the smells of the food were divine, there were stalls with clothing and silks and cloths of all shades and designs, there were even stalls with what this era viewed as makeup. The only difference was the occupants, they were all demons of both the humanoid nature and demonic nature. She was practically unnoticed until they passed a stall where a brave old demon with a grey beard down to his knees and no hair on his had grasped her hand as she walked by. A gasp left her lips and she locked eyes with him only to realize he was blind. “Release me.” She breathed out.
Her soft voice caught Sesshomaru’s attention since he had been a few paces ahead of her scanning the crowd as they moved through it for potential occurrences that would arise with his presence and her own. He knew the demon that was holding to his female and narrowed his eyes. He was the blind wind dragon that was known to use trickery on humans and sell their children on the market as house servants to the royals. The old demon was already speaking to Kagome as he moved to her side.
“I sense you have a kind heart and royal blood. Allow this humble old demon to offer you first look at my newest possessions.” Kagome noticed that the only things in his stall were collars and she narrowed her eyes, wondering if he would try to sell her a pet of some sort. She didn’t have time for a pet, she already had Inuyasha to deal with on daily basis and that was far enough for her. She was in the middle of politely refusing his offer when he pulled her behind the curtain, Sesshomaru following behind her silent as he always was. Kagome was staring at him to try and ask for help discreetly since in the human villages her words would have worked, but the demon village it seemed to not be as simple.
When his amber eyes never looked to hers she followed his gaze to what was in the tent beyond the stall and fought the urge to scream. There were children in ages ranging from around five years old to young teenagers no more than thirteen, all of them were wearing collars and were in nice clothes but had tear stained cheeks and fear in their eyes. Some of the younger ones were still crying silently while the older ones had looks of determination to be strong hanging by a thread in their eyes. “What is this?” She could feel her heart breaking for each child that would whisper the words mommy or daddy, would be holding their sibling or another child that was terrified.
“Why my Lady! Potential servants! You start them young when their wills can be easily broken and you have a loyal subject for life!” He was too busy fussing over a few of the children to notice that she was shaking and the children were flinching away from him. She was on the verge of losing control, as Sesshomaru had warned her not to do.
“We will be leaving now.” Sesshomaru’s voice cut through the air and the old demon cringed slightly, but Kagome turned to look at him with tears in her eyes and her pupils starting to glow a light tone of purple. Sesshomaru recognized that from when she had nearly killed Kouga; her demonic and priestess energy were melding because both parts of her were in agreeance about the captive children. “How much for all of them?” the dragon demon stuttered as the Western Lord spoke once more and the woman’s soft gasp echoed in the stunned silence.
“Lord Sesshomaru! What an honor to have the Western Lord purchasing my goods!” He felt Kagome stiffen at the dragon’s words and grasped her shoulder in a blink, which caught her attention and snapped her mouth shut as he gaze caught his. The first thing he saw was fury, the next thing he saw was a warning, and the final thing he saw was her fight to keep from losing herself. He narrowed his eyes a mere fraction that only she would catch and felt her whole body go rigid.
“Have them delivered to my palace by nightfall or suffer the consequences.” He reached into what Kagome assumed was a hidden pocket on his inner clothing and threw a small pouch of what sounded like solid gold pieces. The old dragon was in shock and bowed low to the floor. Praises to the Great Lord of the Western Lands were being repeated over and over as Sesshomaru led Kagome with a bit of force out of the stall. He could tell she wanted to run back inside and hold the children, but he would not let her. “You have saved them Kagome. Be pleased with this and move along before your lack of control over your new self lands attention on you.” He was barely whispering, knowing only her ears would pick up his words due to her closeness.
Kagome was trying her hardest to not cry, yes she had been the reason he bought the dozen children but she could only imagine how scared they were, how much their mothers were grieving. “Please send them home Sesshomaru. I will be in your debt if you do this for me. Please.” A single nod of his head reassured her and made her steps come lighter. She made sure to stay at his side after the incident with the children, not wanting to be pulled into another stall of horrors. Sesshomaru did, however, catch her looking at some of the make up and jewelry, the occasional fan and of course the food.
“If you wish for something you need only point it out.” His words were not whispered, which caught the attention of all the stall owners in earshot. It was not often that the Lord of the West ventured into the villages, and far less often that he purchased anything. None had seen him with a female void the human child Rin when he would be buying her items. So needless to say every stall they passed after his words were uttered resulted in attention on Kagome and glances asking for permission to approach once she looked at the item being shown to her.
She had oddly declined everything except for some food that had been offered, though the vendor insisted that it was on the house. Sesshomaru was at a loss, most women if given the chance would jump on the chance to purchase items to show off to the other demons in a power play. Kagome didn’t, she would gracefully decline and move away from the stall owner who was crushed that the Lords obvious Lady wasn’t pleased with the trinket offered.
The only time that Kagome had hesitated when it came to a trinket was when they had been looking at the fans and chopsticks meant for hairstyles. She had seen a pair of silver sticks with a moon charm dangling from its end, she had been told that it was enchanted to match the phase of the moon each night. She had almost said something but decided against it and left the stall after praising the craftsmanship, Sesshomaru had picked them up in the thing box they lay in and left payment behind to the grateful stall owner. It had been a few hours by the time they had wandered the whole marketplace and Shippo came into sight with Akihiko close behind him. They had two packages each and she knew they were kimonos for her and Shippo, she assume Hiko had hers. It was when she was safely with her brother that Sesshomaru moved into a familiar stall where he took Rin.
“My Lord! How curious to see you in my stall again so soon. Has Rin grown once more?” The old woman walked up to him as if she were a dear old friend, but did not touch him. “I had hoped my calculations would keep her kimonos on her for at least four more months. What are you feeding her!?” she teased lightly before noticing that he was not in the mood for it on this visit.
“This Sesshomaru is not here for Rin. For another.” He was discreet in his reasoning but the old woman knew better than that. “That must be the heavenly scent I smell on your Lord’s person. And the one the rumors in the market are talking of. I have heard she has not bought a single thing for herself, void a bit of food. Is this true? What female doesn’t enjoy the luxuries when offered by the great Sesshomaru?” she crossed her arms over her non-existent chest. “What are the measurements? And colors wanted?”
When he finished telling her what he wanted she took in a breath of air. “That is very specific my lord. And very bold.” He narrowed his gaze at her and she growled at him, “Don’t you glare at me pup! I knew you when you were no more than a whimpering thing on your mother’s breast! I will not tolerate it.” She turned her back to him without a care in the world, she had been making clothing for the Tashio’s since the beginning of the bloodline and had the protection of the family so she had some room to stand in when it came to dealing with the young lord.
She was moving through the isles in the rather large tent stall, sifting through thin boxes and larger ones. By the time she was done she had a almost displaced the whole store when she produced three boxes ranging from a larger long box on the bottom, to two medium boxes stacked on top. He paid her double what the kimono fittings were worth and left the stall without a word. When he returned to Kagome she was nibbling on some raw meat and looking at him curiously. “Time to leave.” He waited for her to stand up and throw the stick the meat was on in the fire pit before he began to escort her out of the village. Though Shippo and Akihiko were talking adamantly about something they had seen in the market both Sesshomaru and Kagome were silent and looking only ahead of them, their presence left no room for a vendor to approach and had other demons moving out of their way without thinking on it.
Kagome had slowly grown more comfortable around the demons in the market to the point where her own demon in her was stretching itself out. She had not noticed that her aura was seeping out of her, that every bit of demonic and priestess energy she had in her small body was slowly building up a presence around her that was equal in magnitude to Sesshomaru’s. He had though, and with each step she took he was pleased with how she held herself even though she was in his kimono, weaponless, and in a new territory. Once she was trained in her skills and battle she would be something that he would need to fear and that made his beast lick its lips from within him.
When they were out of the village and back among the trees she breathed in relief, her whole body relaxing. “Sesshomaru, thank you.” He smiled at her, able to drop the Lord’s persona as he leaned down and lay a soft kiss upon her cheek.
“You are welcome, Kagome. I must return to castle to make sure the children are attended too properly and retrieve Rin. She will be driving Jaken to an early grave if I do not.” Kagome had nodded, watching him pull his energy into focus and shift into the ball of light she had only seen a handful of times and was gone in a blink.
“Momma. What did he mean the children?” Shippo was scratching his head, the only child he knew about was Rin and even at that she wasn’t really a child anymore, she was a teenager with a child’s spirit which he knew would never leave her. Kagome proceeded to tell them about the dragon demon and the children which made Shippo angry but Hiko seemed to be unaffected.
“It is a common thing Gome. Many households you will come across with servants were once purchased at the markets.” She glared at her older brother, “Even our own.” He added cautiously. She balled up her fists then and he felt the stirrings of her power.
“Not once I get home.” They traveled in silence after that, Hiko fearing angering her and Shippo knowing better than to push Kagome when she was in a bad mood. When night fell they made camp and Hiko began to explain what the next process of her transformation would be. She understood that she would be asleep, and that after tonight she would appear fully demon at all times, and that her memories would be fully restored. After this process was done all she would need to gain was her demonic form and that was a more painful process.
She ate some fresh fish they caught in the stream near their camp and settled into her sleeping bag, watching his fingers move to press to the moon symbol on her forehead. The moment his fingers touched her skin she was gone and the process had begun.
