13. Going Home
When her youkai companion returned from her last trip to the slavers’ camp, Sango and Miroku ran forward to help unload the cargo. While the children who still possessed some small reserves of strength brought the bags of food they had salvaged to the area closest to the fire, the others busied themselves with bringing the three unconscious figures from the huge youkai’s back. The two former taijiya students, still securely tied up, were placed beneath a large tree a short distance from the fire, while the adult hanyou was carefully placed in the sleeping bag next to his wounded mate.
Despite his hanyou healing abilities, the couple insisted on cleaning and binding his wounds, studiously ignoring the raging arousal that had resulted from the dead miko’s spell. Tucking the warm fabric around the pair, they went to prepare a meal for the group, understanding that the hanyou and his mate would each benefit most from the simple presence of the other.
Mindful of the condition of near-starvation in which Takara had been found some weeks earlier, the meal was a light one, consisting of simply rice and a broth made from some of the dried meat recovered from the slavers’ camp. Although Sango and Miroku both believed that Inuyasha and Kagome would also benefit from some food, it seemed apparent that they needed the rest more, so they simply left the pot of broth in the ashes at the edge of the fire before going to sleep.
There was no need to keep watch. Since the slavers were captured, there was little to fear in the forest so close to the village. Besides, Kirara could remain at least partly alert while she slept.
A wanderer passing through the forest would have found himself struck motionless by an exceedingly odd sight. Two young couples lay asleep around the fire while two large men lay bound and glowering nearby. By far the most bizarre sight of all would have been the huge firecat youkai that lay nearest the fire surrounded and nearly covered by the tired bodies of nine young children.

She awoke gradually to the exquisite feeling of something warm and wet moving over the wound on her shoulder. She could feel the slight stickiness where the tape that had been holding the bandage in place had been removed, but the pain in her shoulder was essentially gone, replaced by a deep itching that indicated healing well under way. Lying quietly, she took stock of her general condition. Noticing that the bandages that had been replaced on her raw, scraped wrists had been removed, she realized that they were now entirely healed.
Soon the luxurious treatment of her shoulder wound stopped and she could feel a new, smaller bandage being placed over the injury before warm arms wrapped around her once again. “I’m sorry for this, love.”
She blinked a few times in surprise at the rough, broken tone in her mate’s whispered words. “There’s no need for you to be sorry. There was no way you could have known that they had that kind of help.”
She could feel his curiosity like a physical thing, although she wasn’t able to turn and face him due to the powerful grip he had on her body. “What do you mean?”
She sighed. She had hoped to put off this conversation until they were both fully recovered, but maybe it was better to get it all out in the open now. “When I took back my soul--I’m really sorry about that, but it was the only thing I could think of to do--I also got all of Kikyou’s memories from the time she was resurrected. The former taijiya were the ones who made the poisonous smoke that knocked you, Shippou, Kirara, and Takara out, but she’s the one who cast the spell that put Sango, Miroku, and myself to sleep like that. No matter what precautions we could have taken, there’s no way we could have fought off that kind of double attack.”
Hearing the absolution in her tone, the hanyou pulled her even tighter against his body. She blushed as a firm warmth dug into her hip. “Anyway,” she continued, “I also received her memories of the various spells she’s learned in the past few years, including the one she cast on you.” She squirmed against him, trying to turn and face him. “I can reverse it for you now.”
“No,” he said, his breath warm in her ear, “I think we can wait until you’re healed before worrying about that. Besides,” he said, running his tongue down the side of her neck, “I think that this has certain…possibilities, don’t you?”
“You could be right,” she conceded, shivering a little at his touch. “But there’s something else--we have to get back to Shiori as soon as we can. There’s another old spell I got from Kikyou’s memories that just might have the answers she’s been looking for.”
“A fertility spell?”
She nodded slightly, then allowed her tired muscles to melt back against the body of her mate. “I think so. If I’m right, I’ll have to go back there more often.”
His powerful arms tightened around her slender form for a fraction of a second, then loosened as he considered her words. She did not, after all, say that she would be staying in the other world. “For what?” With an effort, he kept his tone cordial.
“The spell itself is simple enough, but it takes physical contact to activate it. I’d have to actually be able to touch whoever I tried to use it on. But that’s not the whole thing--because of the kid of spell it is, it takes a certain level of power to be able to use it, and I’ve never met anybody in my time with the kind of power it would take.”
“So, you’re saying that you’ve found an answer for people like us, but that they won’t be able to benefit from it unless you go back there all the time.” His voice was a strange mixture of disappointment and hope.
“We can make more plans after we talk with Shiori. After all, we should really test it first to be sure it actually works before offering it to others, and I probably shouldn’t be going through the well once I get pregnant anyway. I don’t think I’d need to go there more than once or twice a month or so--we’ll probably have to go back that often anyway once we have another pup: Mama is thrilled with Shippou, but she’s been getting impatient for us to have more kids for her to spoil rotten.”
“Still,” he murmured, “I never wanted this to happen. If I’d had any reason to suspect that you would have become a target, I would never have--”
“Never have what? Never have tried to avenge what was done to Takara? Never have hunted the slavers? Never have freed the rest of the hanyou children they took? You didn’t have a choice, any more than I did. Besides,” she continued, “All they did was take your mark. That just means that you’ll have to give me another one once I heal a little more.”
He muttered an especially choice expletive. “Don’t try lying to me--I could feel what they did to you. Maybe we should--”
She was getting a little irritated, more due to her own fatigue than his incessant need to assume responsibility for every bad thing that happened. “Should what? Do you not want to be mated to me any more? Do you want us to separate?”
Shit! That wasn’t what he meant at all, but he could smell the tears gathering in her eyes all the same. He pulled her even tighter against his body, his voice a soft purr in her ear. “Never, love. I was going to say that maybe we should spend more time in your world rather than less. It would be safer for you there.”
“Baka! How would it be safer? My world has its dangers, too, you know. I mean, there aren’t a lot of youkai there--at least not publicly--but they do still exist, and I wouldn’t be surprised if more than a few of them had a small grudge against me. But there are other things, too. We have traffic that kills hundreds of people every year. We have thieves and muggers, most of whom have guns. We have pollution in our air, water, and food that can make people really sick. Besides, I think I would miss our family here even more than I miss my family there.”
“You know,” he said, capturing her earlobe in his fangs, “You can take off Kikyou’s spell any time you want. We don’t need it--I don’t need it, not when you’re here. Hell, if you took it off right now I bet there wouldn’t be any difference at all.”
She turned in his arms, gasping as she bumped her injured shoulder against the ground. Reaching down between their bodies, she lightly touched the body part in question while muttering the unfamiliar syllables of the counter spell. His hips moved restlessly as her touch reawakened the need that he felt only for her. He pulled her close again, the feel of her body against his igniting his passion while her scent soothed it. “Go to sleep, love. In the morning we can go off somewhere for a little while and I’ll make you scream for me.”
*
He was as good as his word. Awake before dawn, they left a brief note for Sango and Miroku saying that they would be back soon and made their way to the nearby campsite that still held their scent from days before. As the woman knelt on the ground to spread out their sleeping bag, the desperation suddenly became too great for her hanyou mate.
Moving behind her in a blur of motion, he raised the hem of her yukata, releasing the intoxicating fragrance that came only from her. Wrapping his arms tightly around her thighs, he let himself sink into the demanding scent of his mate’s desire for him. He was out of his clothes in seconds, plunging into her body with a fierce intensity that her quivering and screaming through her release in a matter of moments.
Their coupling, though brief, was intense, and they required a short period of rest before they could even think of rising to return to the rest of the party. Still, the hanyou was apologetic --he hadn’t meant for it to be over so quickly. She raised a hand to lightly stroke his ear, igniting the fire in his loins once more. “Don’t worry so, love. I bet we can make it last a little longer next time. Don’t forget--we’ve been apart for a couple of days: we couldn’t have held off any longer.”
He shook his head, capturing the hand that threatened to arouse him to the point of no return. “No. We should be getting back to the others. It only took us a night to get out here, but we’re going to travel a lot slower with that horde of sick pups: more stops, longer rest periods, that kind of thing. I’m afraid we won’t have any more time for this until after we get home. But then,” he said with an expression that wasn’t quite a leer, “I plan to keep you so busy you won’t be able to walk when you finally do get out of bed.”
Since they returned to their campsite before any of the others were awake, there were no awkward questions requiring answers. Since both were far too alert to go back to sleep, they decided to start preparing food for the entire group.
*
As predicted, it took considerably longer to return to Kaede’s village than it had taken to reach the slavers’ campsite. Although greatly slowed by their malnutrition, the healing process in the former prisoners was still much more rapid than it would have been in human children. Since none of them had been hurt nearly as badly at Takara, all of them were able to walk for increasingly long distances after each rest: the combination of adequate food and even minimal medical care meant that all but the most serious of the injuries were completely healed by the end of the third day of travel.
It was a decidedly odd group that trooped into the middle of the village on the sixth day of traveling. Without pausing to satisfy any of the villagers’ curiosity, the adult hanyou led his charges directly to the home of the elderly miko who cared for the residents of the small village. Though she had gotten used to seeing Takara around the village, no amount of advance notice could have prepared her for the sight that met her eyes when she returned to her home from gathering herbs in the forest nearby.
“What’s all this, then?”
The adult hanyou snorted. “We need you to look these pups over, Babaa. We got them from the same bastards Takara got away from--they were half starved and beat to hell. We managed to get them fed up a little on the trip back, but I want to make sure we didn’t miss anything. Also,” he said with a meaningful look at his mate, “I want you to look at Kagome’s shoulder--one of those bastards tried to break our mating bond by cutting out her mark.”
The young woman blushed crimson, then said, “There’s no hurry--he’s been tending it for almost a week now. I think you’re going to want to bring the village elders in on this, though: we brought the leaders of the slavers back with us, and we’re going to leave it up to them to decide what should be done with them. The bad news is that we haven’t been able to get them to tell us anything about where they’ve sold the others.”
The children were all healing well, although at a much slower rate than would be considered normal for hanyous. Although tradition dictated that visitors to the village normally stayed with the miko, the special circumstances made it advisable for them to move in with the adult hanyou and his family, at least until they decided where they would ultimately choose to live.
Although some of the elders in the village wanted the slavers banished or executed, the young miko from the future convinced them to simply imprison them in the hopes that they would someday be persuaded to reveal the ultimate destiny of the children they had sold before they had been caught.
