Souta's feet thundered against the wooden floorboards as he raced out of Kagome's room, papers from his school folder flying every which way. As he crossed the threshold, he turned, grinning as he bent and snatched up his math homework.
"You're just mad cuz you didn't get to talk to that Amaru guy all day yesterday!" he yelled, sticking his tongue out at his disgruntled older sister.
Kagome bristled, stalking toward the boy and giving him a swift knuckle to the head before slamming the door shut.
"UGH!! Little brothers!!" she screeched, balling her fists.
"EEWW!! Big sisters!" the annoyingly cheerful voice called from the other side of the door, followed by raucous laughter, and the sound of feet clomping down the stairs.
She flung the door open, chucking a shoe toward the staircase before slamming it once again and leaning against the frame. She glared down at the floor.
Does EVERYBODY know the way I feel about the guy?!? she demanded silently, stomping her foot and storming toward her window.
The sun had already risen, bright and exuberant, above the treetops. The air was quickly warming, the clouds rolling back in welcome to the new Friday morning. All was well in rural Japan.
“Then why do I feel like there’s something horrible coming this way?” Kagome muttered as she began to strip out of her pajamas.
Every day of the last few months had been just like this. She’d awaken before the others to prepare breakfast, and a bath for Souta, before pulling the iron from its hiding place in the bathroom cupboard and making her way to her mother’s room. Once the Higurashi matriarch was awake and on her way to readying herself for work at the local clinic, Souta would be bathed, fed, and sent off for another day of school. Mom’s uniform would be pressed, then the two would sit in silence together over their own meals until it was time to see the older woman off as well.
Kagome had long passed her finishing exams, though “poor” didn’t begin to describe her final scores. Graduation was far behind her now, and two semesters of juku coupled with one semester of dry-run testing, had brought her up to speed and earned her a proper high school diploma. College had been the next step, only scant months ago, but… disaster had struck.
After Grandpa’s passing, she’d been allowed to stay at home rather than entering university or finding a suitable job. After all her struggles, education seemed the least of her worries in those coming days. After the sale of their old home, there was enough to maintain them until a steady flow of income was established. The house and car were paid for in full, and expenses were not so unbearable that she needed to work. But recently…
Striding across the room, she tugged her robe down from its peg near the closet door, gathering her towel and soaps, and heading toward the bathroom. She hadn’t noticed just how unbearable being this dormant truly was. So accustomed to being on the run, on the move, trying never to look back, Kagome’s body had finally begun to protest against this unexpected bout of inactivity. As she closed the bathroom door, and shrugged the robe from her shoulders, she nodded to herself. Her mind was made up.

“I think it’s time for me to get a job.”
Ms.Higurashi stared blankly at her daughter, her hands halting in the process of buttoning her uniform shirt.
“Before you say anything, you have to hear me out,” Kagome rushed on, plopping down on the end of her mother’s bed.
“Alright,” the older woman conceded, straightening her lapels in the dresser mirror. “Go on.”
“I’m dying, mom!” Kagome wailed, lying backward and flinging an arm across her face dramatically.
Her mother laughed, coming to stand over the girl, her hands clasped before her. “And why would you say such a thing?”
“I have to be outdoors. Being closed in like this isn’t healthy for a girl! There’s a big beautiful world out there, full of stocks, and bonds, and fast food restaurants. I need to be a part of it all! I have to do something before I go completely insane!”
Ms.Higurashi sat down on the bed, petting Kagome’s leg tenderly. “There’s no need for you to work, Kagome. We’re perfectly fine as things are. But if you truly believe that you’re ready, then… alright.”
She shot up into a sitting position. “Really?! You’re ok with this?”
The older woman smiled warmly, rising and returning to her position in front of the mirror. “Of course, if it will keep a smile on your face. Now, do you have any places in mind yet?”
The thought of finally having something to do, anything at all, had been so exhilarating, she hadn’t really thought of where she would be going at all. Western Tokorozawa was nothing like Saitama, its urban twin. This little town had somehow maintained the essence of Japanese tradition in its simplicity. There were few stores this far out into the countryside, and fewer large businesses to take in someone her age for work. Suddenly, the “Great Higurashi Movement Plan” had come to a crashing standstill.
“I’m sure there are one or two places about that could gladly use the help,” her mother supplied, seeing the crestfallen look on her daughter’s face.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Kagome replied half-heartedly. “I just hadn’t really thought about that part until now.”
“And if all else fails, you can ask your new friend, Amaru if there are positions in any of his hotels,” Ms.Higurashi put in slyly, turning her eyes away innocently as Kagome glared at her with flaming cheeks. “After all, he seems like such a nice young man. I’m sure he would gladly find an opening for you. There are so many of those wonderful hotels to choose from. All quite successful, I might add.”
The girl was gawking at her now. It was an amusing sight to behold, the brilliant shade of red glowing below those wide, disbelieving eyes. Ms.Higurashi smiled to herself. Yes, it truly was a mother’s pride, maintaining the unflappable ability to shock and amaze her own daughter.
“Hurry along now,” she rushed onward, not allowing any time for questions or complaints as she shooed Kagome out of her bedroom and down the hall. “There is a number on the kitchen counter near the phone. It isn’t so early that you wouldn’t be able to reach him if you tried.”
“How did you--”
“Hush, now,” she interjected. “I have to be on my way to work. No time to dawdle, Kagome. You know, I suddenly recall the mention of an opening in a waitressing position. Or was it receptionist? Well, you’ll just have to call and find out, now won’t you? Go on. Into the kitchen with you.”
“But--”
“Ah! There are my keys,” the older woman interrupted once again, taking the keys from their position by the phone. “Now what am I forgetting? Lunch? Here it is. Thank you sweetheart. And good luck, though I’m sure you don’t need it. Have a wonderful day, now!”
Somewhere in the confusion, there was a closing of doors, a striking of the ignition, and a pulsating silence as Kagome found herself alone with her spinning sensibilities, and a sheet of paper clutched in her right hand. She turned slowly, staring across the room to the front door.
“What… what just happened…?”

A block away, at the side of a familiar dirt road, a small blue Toyota stood silent and unmoving. Inside, a figure sat, staring out across a grassy field to the rising sun that now illuminated her wavering smile.
What an interesting start to the day. She’d sensed this coming, somehow. Be it motherly instinct, or woman’s intuition, something had told her that today fate would give her the chance to decide. Today she would choose, yet again, the direction all their lives would take. Now the only question that remained was: had she chosen correctly this time?
It was a mother’s duty to make sacrifices, no matter the shape they took; to ensure the safety and happiness of her children. It was her responsibility to see to the proper upbringing of those she’d borne into this world. And it was her job to oversee the chain of events that would lead her children to success. The sense of purpose that came with being a mother was strong, and would forever be the glue that held her life together. But it didn’t make this individual choice any easier to bear.
Kagome was growing up. She was getting older, and as much as she, the mother, wished to keep her little girl at her side, it was time to begin letting go. She’d done what she could to bring her daughter this far. And now, it was time to see if she could stand on her own. Whether it be in love or in life…
Breathing deeply and squaring her shoulder, Ms.Higurashi reached for the keys in the ignition.
This is enough, she whispered to herself as the engine came to life. She’s more than prepared. She’ll be just fine.
She eased the car back onto the road, wiping at the moisture that dampened her cheek.
You’ve done enough.
Lifting her head, her smile strengthened. The road was clear for as far as the eye could see. The light seemed to illuminate the very path she now traveled. The choice had been right after all.

Amaru sighed, looking out the restaurant window for what had to be the fiftieth time that morning. They were late. He despised tardiness, and they knew very well just what this was doing to him. He had to squelch the urge to pummel the waiter as he rounded on the table for the sixth time since the man had taken his usual seat at the secluded booth.
“Is there anything I can do for you, Mr.Kiken?” the annoying little man asked for the sixth time that morning. “Anything at all, sir, and I will do my very best to accommodate you.”
Amaru clenched his teeth before another sigh could slip through. Detestable habit…
“I will be sure to request your exclusive assistance, should I require any aid, Juuro,” he ground out, relief washing over him as the little man scurried away with a bow.
What was it about this particular servant that reminded him of… His features softened. Of course. How could he have forgotten the little old toad…
His thoughts were interrupted as a small chiming tone rang from his inner lapel. Pulling the cell phone out, he snapped the lid open and murmured a tired ‘hello’. A smile slowly spread across his face at the voice that met his ear.
“I’d hoped you would call,” he replied, fingering the glass that sat before him on the table.
He listened intently, taking in every word, only looking upward as two figures entered the restaurant. Beckoning for them to come forward, he hid his smile behind the rim of his glass.
“There’s a small matter that needs attending to, but I would very much like to see you today,” he went on, brushing aside the questioning look that was sent his way by the man now standing before him. “I’ll call again soon. Goodbye.”
“Somebody we know?” the jovial voice was surprisingly welcome to his ears.
“None of your concern,” Amaru replied tersely, rising and shaking the man’s hand nonetheless. “I’m pleased you could make it.”
This last comment was aimed at the auburn-haired woman who now extended a hand to him. Her smile was brilliant as she lowered herself into a seat, her husband quick to follow suit.
“I’m surprised you asked for me,” the man went on, turning curious hazel eyes to Amaru’s amused golden ones. “Especially for something like this…”
“Who better to turn to in such a matter than the world renowned Inari couple?”
“Now I’m really confused,” the sandy-haired chemist leaned in, lowering his voice. “Compliments from the great Lord Sesshoumaru? For a low, unworthy kitsune like myself? What exactly did I do to deserve this?”
Amaru smiled.
“That’s a look I’m quickly getting used to,” the woman piped in, raising a delicate hand to signal the waiter. “It brings out your eyes, Sesshoumaru. Like two golden beacons, highlighting your insanity from miles around, for everyone to see.”
He couldn’t help but laugh at the woman’s audacious joke. “I take that as a compliment, Tsuyako. But let’s get down to business, shall we?”
“Sure. Change the subject.”
“Oh hush, Shippou, love,” Tsuyako chided gently. “If our Lord’s returned our call with such an urgent invitation, it has to be of some importance.”
“True,” the kitsune gave in easily, reclining as their menus were passed around. “So. What exactly is it that’s got your boxers in a twist, Sesshoumaru?”
The demon’s smile grew slightly sinful as he raised his glass to his lips once again. “Not what, little magician. Whom.”
The pair seated across from him looked at each other questioningly. This was serious indeed. If there was a “who” involved with the great white demon himself, it meant they’d have their work cut out for them.
