I know this chapters been a long time coming, and I'm not altogether satisfied with it yet, but it's been staring at me for too long. Thus, I had to put it up here. I hope you enjoy it, and please give feedback.
Chapter 12: The weight of ServitudeSesshoumaru let his fingers trace the beads around his neck as he gazed blindly at the fire. “Heavy aren’t they,” Maeko said, “The weight of servitude always is. You should…”
“You needn’t tell me. I am already accustomed to this weight.”
Meako’s eyes softened, “Sesshoumaru, you know that I…”
“You needn’t bother, as your words would make no difference,” his calm, emotionless eyes met hers for a moment before he turned them back to the fire.
“What are you both talking about?” Inuyasha asked as he emerged from the trees.
“It doesn’t concern you, hanyou.”
“Ass,” Inuyasha mumbled as he set the logs he’d gathered next to the fire.
“Remember what I told you, Inuyasha.” Maeko said with a wink.
“What did she tell you, hanyou?” Sesshoumaru asked after she walked away.
“The hell do you care.” Inuyasha said walking towards him, “I think you should be more concerned about the things I say.” He wrapped his fingers around the beads and tugged Sesshoumaru forward. “After all, I own you.”
“You have power over me for the moment. Don’t make the mistake of thinking I won’t find a way out of this.”
“I doubt that,” Inuyasha said with a smirk, “Maeko strengthened the charm on the beads. You’ll have a harder time resisting than I had.”
“Don’t underestimate me.”
“Well,” Inuyasha said his eyes sparkling deviously, “You asked about what my other master’s made me do, I’ll show you.” He yanked the beads upward and forced Sesshoumaru to stand up. He dragged Sesshoumaru inside Maeko’s roughly constructed hut. Sesshoumaru straightened as Inuyasha released his hold on the beads.
Inuyasha turned to stare at him with a mischievous and angry glint in his eyes. “Come here, youkai.” He said calmly while beckoning Sesshoumaru forward. Sesshoumaru glared at him for moment, determined to prove that he was stronger. His resolved lasted only a moment as his feet moved forward of their own accord. Inuyasha smirked smugly as he stared at the anger simmering in Sesshoumaru’s eyes. He leaned his head next to Sesshoumaru’s ear. Inuyasha felt a sick sort of satisfaction as he could sense Sesshoumaru’s hackles rising at their closeness. “Get on your knees,” he whispered into the delicately arched alabaster ear. Sesshoumaru’s body literally shook with rage as the beads forced his legs out from under him. He fell heavily to his knees.
“What a good pet you are, Sesshoumaru, such an obedient dog.” He brushed his fingers along Sesshoumaru’s chin.
Sesshoumaru was breathing harshly, his hands clenched into fists. “Have you finished, hanyou,” he asked icily.
“Are you trying to give me orders, slave?” Inuyasha asked with a slight edge to his voice as he slipped his fingers around Sesshoumaru’s neck. Sesshoumaru stared forward placidly refusing to meet Inuyasha’s gaze.
“Close your eyes,” Inuyasha said sedately.
Sesshoumaru’s eyes grew heavy, but he refused to close them. His gaze jerked over to Inuyasha. “Hanyou, you…”
“I didn’t give you permission to talk.” Inuyasha ground out angrily, “Do what I asked, or are you incapable of heeding even that simple instruction?”
Sesshoumaru’s eyes slid slowly closed. Inuyasha inwardly cheered as he stared at the defenseless demon in front of him. Sesshoumaru cringed as he could feel Inuyasha breath ghost over his face. His eyes burst open as he gasped for breath.
“That,” Inuyasha said as he removed his fist from Sesshoumaru’s stomach, “was for earlier.” He dropped a broom onto Sesshoumaru’s lap. “Clean this place up.” he said coldly, “You should be capable of that at least.”
Sesshoumaru’s eyes followed him angrily as he slipped out of the hut. Sesshoumaru’s breathing evened out as he began to sweep the room. The bamboo broom began to splinter under the force of his grip. His fingers shook convulsively as his mind replayed his humiliation. Tufts of dirt and debris floated thickly out of the open doorway. Inuyasha smiled smugly as he watched his slave maneuver the broom around the hut.
“Do you really believe this is enough to shame him,” Maeko asked breaking Inuyasha’s concentration.
“Of course, he’s a spoiled prince, and I’ve reduced him to being a servant. Someone as conceited as him won’t be able to stand it.”
“Hmm,”Meako said as she watched Sesshoumaru disappear into the woods with a bucket.
“What,” Inuyasha groused.
“It’s just you know so very little, child.” She said shaking her head sadly.
“What are you talking about,” Inuyasha demanded anger in his voice.
Maeko smiled mysteriously as she walked away.
“Maeko,” he called staring through the trees in agitation, “Tell me what you meant by that.”
There was a rustle of leaves as Maeko glided out of a tree and landed in front of him. “What are you asking me, Inuyasha?” Her eyes were cold and demanding as they gazed at him.
Inuyasha recoiled from the gaze. “I just want you to tell me…”
“But I won’t,” Maeko answered holding her arms behind her back and walking to his side.
“But you said if I asked you…”
“No, Inuyasha,” the coldness in her voice was almost palpable, “I said I would show you, nothing else. If you want tales of your brother, you must go somewhere else. I am not in the business of gossip.” She stared at him expectantly.
Inuyasha folded his arms over his chest. “I don’t want to see his life.” He turned to walk back to the campsite. Maeko grasped his shoulder before he could walk away.
“Why not? Are you afraid?”
Inuyasha looked away. “Of course I’m afraid.” His voice was soft as he stared at the ground, “Sesshoumaru grew up in a palace surrounded by people who would die for him. The only person who cared for me died when I was still a child, I’ve lived my life fighting to survive. I don’t want to know him. I don’t want to know about the person who turned his back on me. Why should I? I don’t want to feel wretched or ashamed of the life I’ve fought to preserve. I don’t want him to be right.”
“Right, about what, Inuyasha,” Meako asked softly.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said, “I just don’t want to be shown his life. What value does that life have to me?” “He’s your brother.”
“You keep saying that.” Inuyasha spouted angrily, “What does that even mean? When has that thing, whose been trying to kill me since the moment I took my first breath, ever been my brother.”
Maeko averted her eyes in sadness. “You must decide, Inuyasha. It is your choice?”
“What choice are you talking about?”
“You must decide what Sesshoumaru’s existence means to you and you must decide soon.”
“There’s nothing to decide, as far as I’m concerned he never existed.” Inuyasha’s hands had clenched into fists. His burnished gold eyes had darkened to an almost copper as he walked away from her. He pushed branches aside absentmindedly as his feet led him back to the campsite. Inuyasha froze in surprise as he neared the cabin. He watched Sesshoumaru dip his long, slender fingers into the water. He closed his fingers with a jerk, letting the water run off of the rag he was holding. He slid onto knees and pushed the rag along the floor in a smooth, even motion. Inuyasha stared for a few moments. “How is he able to do that so well,” he asked himself.
“Like I said, Inuyasha, there is so little you know.”
Well, that all I have for now. I hope you liked it.
