Chapter 13 - Start a brand new story
Kagome fell backwards, her back slamming against the ground, and she let out a long groan. Her white t-shirt was covered in mud, tears, and little bits of blood. She pushed herself up onto her elbows and looked ahead of her. There, without so much as a bead of sweat, stood Lady Kanade, her hands lowering from their fighting stance. “Maybe that’s enough for you today, Kagome,” Lady Kanade sighed, approaching her and holding out a hand. Kagome took the hand and hoisted herself up, “I can keep going, I know I can.” Lady Kanade smiled gently, watching the young woman’s chest rise and fall with heavy breaths. “I’ll get this right.” “Child, it is only your first week, Kagome-chan. You’ve made progress, trust me.” Kagome pouted and looked at her feet, “I can’t even conjure the pink light.” “It’s not a pink light, it is a manifestation of your powers, Kagome-chan. It can take a priestess many years to sense the powers and be self-aware. Don’t rush this.” Lady Kanade pulled her hair from its intricate bun, letting it cascade down her back. Kagome had to imagine that if her mother were alive, she would have a similar personality to Lady Kanade. The two entered the complex, sliding the door open to reveal Inuyasha lying on his back, throwing a beanbag up into the air. Lady Kanade cleared her throat and watched Inuyasha turn over onto his stomach and slowly sit up. “Done training?” Kagome sighed and plopped down beside him, picking up her cell phone on the table and texted Sango, “Three hours and nothing happened. Nothing!” Lady Kanade excused herself to bring tea. Inuyasha looked at Kagome who currently was resting her head on the table. He smirked, “Feeling the burn?” “Bite. Me. Inuyasha,” she growled from the table. “Why are you even here?” “Because Sango had a work shift. Are you sick and tired of me already?” he laughed, nudging her with his foot. She rolled onto the floor without any resistance. “You were the one who wanted this.” “I woke up in her house, after passing out, how do you refuse a request she makes?” She looked at him from the floor and frowned. “You can leave me here you know. You have a date today anyway.” Inuyasha felt the shift in the air; suddenly the cozy joking had shifted into something more serious. She wouldn’t look at him from her place on the floor, but he could see the frown on her face as she stared off, thinking about something. He tucked one knee in and looked at her, “You know I can’t just get up and leave.” “How much more of your life are you going to sacrifice for me?” There was a silence in the air. Kagome refused to look at him and clamped her eyes shut, “It’s been weeks now, almost two months, and nothing has happened. You can’t spend the rest of your life feeling sorry for me because I have your blood.”Lady Kanade pulled Kagome up to her feet and walked her towards the bath. “Take your time and relax.”
Inuyasha opened the door to his apartment and looked around. Being away from here, even for a day, the place seemed quieter; the dishes were still in the sink, the coffee maker had brewed on the normal schedule, and the ceiling fans were still turning. He looked at the couch and felt he could almost sense her there, with the sketchpad on her lap, but the place the empty.
He opened the refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of water. There were still a few hours before his date with Kikyo. After pulling out a barstool he flipped open his phone and called Miroku. “Yo, you awake you Monk?” Miroku groaned and rolled over, “Yes, I am awake now, pal. What is wrong for you to call me?” Inuyasha took a sip of his water, “Just got a lot of thinking. I know, real shocker for me.” Miroku chuckled and sat up in his bed, pulling at the covers, “Is there something bothering you? How’s Kikyo?” “We’re fine, getting dinner in a little bit.” “Alright, well how is Kikyo liking Kagome living with you?” Inuyasha tilted the water bottle back and forth on the table, “She really hasn’t said much about it. “ Miroku sighed and closed his eyes, “Then what’s bothering you? I’m too tired for the guessing game.” “Sango told me that you’re looking for that damn wolf.” Miroku sighed even louder, “Yes, yes, I have been asked to try and locate him. But Inuyasha, I’m in a whole other country with fifty states in it, looking, for one single person.’ “So are you really trying?” Miroku banged his head back against the headboard and sighed. “Inuyasha, why are you so concerned about her?” “I just…” Inuyasha sighed and ran his hand through his white hair, “Dude, Kagome is…going through tons of things and I’m not sure…what the hell to do. Then your girlfriend tells me that you’re looking for Koga…why are we throwing oil into the fucking fire.” “Hey, she’s my girlfriend, if I don’t do what she says I don’t get any when I come home. You know that.” “Miroku, Sango is trying to change Kagome back to who she was before the accident and Kagome isn’t that person anymore.” “How day time drama of you, Inuyasha.” “Fuck off, man. She’s a fucking demon now. She has to work on that part of her so it doesn’t hurt her anymore. You remember the blood I told you about? There are nights she wakes up screaming cause of it.” Miroku frowned. Kagome was one of his most important friends. Frankly, this was one of the few female friends Miroku had ever had, who never grew tired of these antics, and learned to roll with the punches. He did not want to contribute to any stress that Kagome already felt. “What do you mean, screaming?” “She fucking screamed in the middle of the night after smashing a mirror in her room. She said she could see red eyes.” Inuyasha took another sip of water and sighed, “The red eyes are the Beast inside of the demon. She can’t communicate with the beast yet and its hard on her. Now she has this priestess shit going on.” “Priestess shit?” “We went to Souta’s grave and all of sudden she flips out. One minute she’s under a tree drawing and the next she’s sprinting away from all of us. Then she lets out this blood-curdling scream like she’s about to be raped, we get there just in time to watch her collapse.” “Was anyone there?” Inuyasha sighed and banged his head on the table. “Right in front of her is this other priestess, named Kanade. She said Kagome had released her power. Now she is being trained under this woman to work on that part of her.” “So she has both demon and priestess, right?” “Yes! She’s also working and trying to finish her artwork.” Miroku smiled into the phone and cradled it on his shoulder, “And you’re worried about her.” Inuyasha paused and cursed under his breath, “So what if I am?” “You know this isn’t your fault, Inuyasha. Her life had a beginning before you. You weren’t the reason she was attacked, you are the reason she is alive.” “Sometimes it doesn’t seem that way,” Inuyasha muttered. “She could have just stayed human if it weren’t for me.” “Sango told me she wouldn’t have survived if you hadn’t helped her.” “Then why are we bringing the wolf back? He started all of this!” “You’re talking in cicles, Inuyasha,” Miroku yawned into the phone. “Losing Souta was the catalyst to the unraveling of her life. Now she just has to figure it out.” “But Sango’s forcing her to be something she’s not.” “And what are you doing, Inuyasha? Don’t you think you push your own opinion on her as well?” “Dude, I didn’t call you to be fucking sentimental with me,” Inuyasha barked into the phone, knocking the water bottle into the sink with frustration. “What the hell do I do?” “Why do you have to do anything, Inuyasha? Don’t you think she’s just happy to have a friend with her?” Inuyasha stared into the emptiness of the apartment, “I just don’t know if she’s happy.” Miroku chuckled into the phone, “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you had some kind of feelings for her, Inuyasha.” “Miroku, GO BACK TO SLEEP,” Inuyasha shouted into the phone and slammed it shut.Inuyasha looked around the room one before walking into the bathroom and turning on the shower
A few hours later Kagome returned to the apartment. She had brought a change of clothes and to accommodate the summer heat she was in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt that covered her scars. With a duffle bag over her shoulder she pushed the door open with her hip and to her surprise, found Inuyasha and Kikyo at the kitchen counter, with beer and wine in hand.
Startled, to say the least, she forced a smile, “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you had company tonight.” She looked at Inuyasha, trying to get a read on his face, but his seemed just as troubled as hers. Quickly bowing her head she headed towards her room, “I’ll just grab something from my room and I’ll be on my way. Sorry for the inconvenience.” “Oh, don’t trouble yourself,” Kikyo chimed after a purposefully long delay, smirking as Kagome’s bedroom door clicked shut. The ice queen titled her head up at Inuyasha and smiled, “She seems to be adjusting well to the co-habitation.” Inuyasha took a swig of his beer and forced a smile, “Yeah. We gel together pretty well.” “And how did you two come to this agreement?” Kikyo asked slyly, sipping on her red wine. Inuyasha gulped again and looked down at her cold face, unable to read anything behind her eyes. “In a way, we swapped roommates; Miroku will be moving in with Kagome’s girl friend, Sango. So I lost Miroku and gained Kagome. Keh, she’s just as laid back as Miroku was, without all the extra women before he met Sango.” Kikyo narrowed her eyes and faked a small laugh, sipping at the wine. “So Miroku and Sango will live together. Do they plan on getting married?” “Of course they do. Sango wouldn’t have let Miroku move in otherwise,” Inuyasha grumbled, sipping at his beer. “So she has a ring then?” Inuyasha glared and put down his drink, “No, she doesn’t yet. Miroku’s in America studying right now, so I’m sure he’ll wait until he comes back and propose in person.” Kikyo put down her wine and crossed her arms, “Then why doesn’t Kagome just live with Sango now?” “Because she had already moved out her belongings when she lived with someone else. She doesn’t want to unpack and then move out of Sango’s in a few months.” “You make it seem like she’ll be living with you for a while, Inuyasha.” “She signed the lease for the year at least, Kikyo,” Inuyasha explained. He finished his beer and began to rinse it out in the sink. “ “And what about me then, Inuyasha?” Inuyasha turned away from the sink and looked at her, crossing his arms and frowning. “You just came back after disappearing for two years. If I remember, you came back to Japan and not just for me.” “Inuyasha.” Her voice was stern, almost irritated with him, as if his answers seemed entirely childish and out of line with her ways. “I see you once or twice a week and now you’re defensive about who my roommate is? You were the one who dropped out of the sky and into my life.” “And she didn’t do the same to you?” Inuyasha slapped his hand against his forehead, “She’s been my neighbor for years and I just never knew it. At least with her I could take my time to learn about her. She’s a good Friend for kami’s sake. You just vanished on me and we were together. So why don’t you tell me what are we supposed to be anyway?” Kikyo smirked and walked up to him, throwing her arms around his neck. “I can show you better than I can tell you.”Inuyasha gulped slightly and smirked, “Maybe you can, but the bedroom might be a better place for that.” Kikyo laughed and pulled him inside.
Kagome hadn’t stayed in her room long once she knew Kikyo was in the apartment. Obviously this was date time for the two of them and Kagome had absolutely no intention of being around for the nauseating times. She threw open her window and stepped out onto the emergency staircase.
Looking over Japan, Kagome could see the sun setting over the tops of the buildings. There was a slight breeze that lifted her bangs slightly like a Mohawk. She had a lot on her mind and today it just felt like a heavy weight on her shoulders. “You can hear me, right demon…me?” Kagome asked aloud, leaning on the railing of the ladder and looking down at the ground six stories below. There was no response. “You’re supposed to be a strong demon, that’s why you’re always trying to gain control of me and my body,” she continued, climbing back inside to her room, looking at the broken mirror that had yet to be replaced. “Inuyasha said that naturally, my body would be stronger because of his blood and your new presence. Internal changes that I didn’t even have to think about. Like they were second nature.” She slowly packed her sketchpad into a backpack and slowly threw her art supplies inside. Through the broken shards of glass on the mirror Kagome could see a little twinkle of red in her eyes. “I think it’s about time we test that theory out.” Kagome stepped out of the window and threw it shut one last time. She stepped onto the guardrail and looked down. There was a deep inhale and a slow exhales. “Just remember, if you let me die, you’re gonna die too.” She closed her eyes and leapt off the balcony. Something inside of her tingled with anxiety as she watched the six stories fly by her, but a part of her felt like it was soaring with joy. Thankfully no one was at his or her windows to see her fall. The building rushed by, emergency ladder after another, and nothing seemed completely abnormal about it. She even took the time to look up at the sky and watch the clouds shrink farther away from her descending body. For a brief moment she felt the demon inside of her stir, letting out an internal howl as the pair slammed to the city floor completely unscathed. Kagome’s chest heaved and she leaned her hand against the wall for support. “Oh, my god.” She looked around and thankfully saw no one around. If she had been discovered it probably would have caused all types of problems. “Oh my god. That was amazing.” She looked down at her own chest, “You were amazing.” The beast inside purred and didn’t seem to put up a fight. There wasn’t a benefit of taking her over right now. Kagome let out a deep breath and smiled, “Lets see how fast we can go now.” With a light-hearted laugh Kagome took off down the street in a run, surprised at the relative ease of the matter. It was like gliding across the sidewalk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was around closing time when Inuyasha opened the door to the café, out of breath, running to the counter where Nana was with bright red hair cleaning the counter. “What’s the matter, Inuyasha? It’s not payday.” “Is Kagome here?” Nana laughed and pointed to the yellow couch, “See for yourself, Inuyasha.” He whipped his head around and saw the back of Kagome’s head. She had her sketchpad open and didn’t seem to realize Inuyasha had arrived. “She came in a few hours ago. Said she’d gone out running and wanted to get some work done. A lady came in and spoke with her. Hasn’t moved from the spot since.” Inuyasha blinked and looked back at Nana. “You know she can’t be left by herself! Why didn’t you tell me she was here?” “Do I look like her mother, Inuyasha?” Nana raised an eyebrow and smirked. “She’s a grown woman, Inuyasha. If I thought she was in trouble I’d help you, but you can’t keep your precious girl on a leash.” “Have you forgotten what’s happened to her?” Nana laughed, “Have I forgotten? One of my favorite customers almost died in my store. Of course I haven’t forgotten. But what I do realize is time goes by, Inuyasha. She is safe here with me. Give the girl some space.” Inuyasha looked back at Kagome’s frame, watching her smudging some black color over a part of the page. “Take this to her and go talk to her.” Nana slid an iced mocha in front of Inuyasha. “It’s her favorite. Now go.” Inuyasha walked up behind Kagome and covered her eyes, mimicking what she had done weeks before to him. She put down her sketchpad and even with covered eyes looked up at him. “What’s up?” “Why didn’t you tell me you were going out?” Inuyasha asked quietly, trying to mask how pissed off he was at her. Kagome shrugged and pried his arm away, “You were kind of busy, Inuyasha. I didn’t want to bother you.” “Did you even tell Sango where you were going?” “No, I didn’t tell her,” she replied, reaching out for the drink she eyed in his hand, flexing her fingers towards it, “She picked up a double shift. She’s been at work all day. She texted me on her dinner break about it.” Inuyasha relented and handed over the drink as he climbed over the couch, watching her scoop up the loose ends of charcoal before they fell into the depths of the couch. “Why not? No one knew where you were.” Kagome sipped at the drink and looked out the window, “I knew this would be the first place you looked for me anyway.” She tucked her leg in under her, “I was fine, Inuyasha.” “Kagome…I’m glad you’re fine, okay? Just don’t worry me like that.” Kagome smirked and handed over the drink to him, “I really doubt you were that worried until after she left. Then when you came to ask me to make ramen, then you were worried.” Inuyasha sipped at the drink to hide his guilt. Kikyo had only left an hour ago after a mysterious call to work. When Kagome didn’t answer to the knocks at her door that was when he knew she was gone. Kagome smirked, “Gotcha.” Inuyasha punched her lightly and looked down at her pads, “Did you get anything done at least?” Kagome nodded and flipped open a page. It was a finished drawing, not one he’d seen before. It was of the store, of the couch they were on, actually. The only thing that was colored was the couch, its bright yellow popping out on the page. The picture had Kagome’s back in it, but with her long hair, from when they first had met. There were tons of other people walking in and out of the frame too, but no one has defined as the girl on the couch. “Feeling nostalgic?” She flipped the page shut. “I just remembered the first time we met, that’s all. It feels like a long time ago.” “I guess so…” “I had meeting here anyway,” Kagome explained, pulling the drink back from him and pressing it to her neck. “My advisor for my make-up class. I had to show her some of my work.” Now he was intrigued. Kagome didn’t talk about her art too much. What he did see was usually something incomplete. “And? Come on, tell me, damnit.” She sipped through the straw and shrugged. “She says I’m progressing well. One day she’d like to hold an exhibition for my work. Students who finish her course had that option at the end of the semester...I just missed out on my chance that’s all.” “So when do I get to see the next Picaso?” “Ha, I’d rather not be Picaso. Maybe Dali.” Inuyasha rolled his eyes, “Well I have no fucking idea who that is, but you better just be great, and let me see the exhibition when it’s done.” Kagome flicked his forehead and handed him back the drink, “Only if you help me with something.” “Me? Help you with art?” Inuyasha raised an eyebrow, “I can draw a stick figure and that’s basically it, Kagome.” Kagome looked at him seriously for a second and then smiled, “Let me draw you, Inuyasha. Please.” Author’s Note: “Where we belong” Lost ProphetsWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
