Sesshoumaru left his bedchambers in a mad dash; his mind was whirling, his emotions strewn all over. What on earth was wrong with him?! Passing Mai in the hallway, he paused only to gesture distractedly in the direction of his chambers; surely the girl was bright enough to figure out what he wanted.
Upon reaching his study, Sesshoumaru sat at his desk in an attempt to cool down and recollect his thoughts. When this failed, however, the demon rose in agitation and began pacing back and forth, his frustration--and deep grooves in the floor--growing with every turn. He had an awful growing suspicion that his confused feelings had something to do with the memories he had sealed away decades ago. Sesshoumaru thought back to the first day he remembered being someone different.
**
He had groggily awoken and been understandably confused. He was lying on a slightly raised futon, gazing up at a low, dark ceiling. The only light in the room came from a tall wax candle sitting in one damp corner, next to which dozed a squat little demon. Drops of blood-red wax had slowly accumulated to form a small, rounded pyramid on the imp’s shoulder. Sesshoumaru let his arm drop gracefully to the floor, picking up a pebble from the ground and tossing it unerringly at the kappa’s oversized head.
The imp had jumped up, bowing and stuttering, and when Sesshoumaru frowned and asked where Jaken was, the small demon had practically had a heart attack.
“Jaken was my father,” Kiken managed to squeak out, looking as though he expected death for his straightforwardness. “He’s been dead for over two hundred years!”
Sesshoumaru had slowly nodded to himself; perhaps this would make sense once he’d pieced himself back together. But he would need to study for days in order to catch up to the current time--he wondered what else he might be forgetting. The lord now remembered feeling very unsure of himself, and having to keep telling himself over and over that he had done this for a good reason, and would regain his whole self once his task was complete.
**
In the present time, however, Sesshoumaru was growing exceedingly upset. He knew exactly what he was supposed to do, but he simply couldn’t remember why! Sesshoumaru growled darkly. He was tired of being lost and confused, unaware of what to do with this ridiculous human girl. He stopped his pacing and headed with purpose toward the dungeons.

Kagome gasped as she was led into the bathing chambers. Her first sensation was thick, roiling steam pushing past her in its effort to escape through the opening doorway. Her hair and body became noticeably wetted, drops of the moisture accumulating on her hands as she attempted to clear the air before her.
Stepping farther into the first chamber, Kagome could make out the large brazier, furiously glowing coals steaming as copious amounts of water were allowed to meet the fire. The oppressive heat coming from that direction was almost overwhelming. Kagome took shallow breaths, letting her lungs grow used to allowing in the vapor.
Mai reached for Kagome’s hand, leading Kagome deep within the shadows, passing through a gaping mouth into a smaller chamber. The two of them had descended several flights of stairs to reach this sacred place within the ground: the demon lord’s jealously-guarded hot springs.
The taller girl brushed a rebellious strand of moist hair out of her eyes. She blinked several times and shook her head to assure herself that what she was seeing was reality and not some vivid, exotic dream. Laid out before her was a vast pool of water, almost foaming with heat and energy. Through her powers, Kagome could feel the force of the pool, and she couldn’t help but wonder whether the water had a life of it’s own. Tearing her gaze away from the swirling depths, the miko let her eyes meet those of several female spirits lounging carelessly on the other side of the pool, a few of whom were immersed in a smaller, likely somewhat cooler pool nearby.
One demoness, with eyes of ruby red and hair the color of the sky on a moonless night, stood up lazily as if she hadn’t a care in the world, and sauntered over to Kagome. The miko felt herself stiffen as the demoness stepped within a foot of her person. Her powers flared in response to the invasion of space, but her gaze was quickly riveted to the spirit’s clawed hand. The demoness raised it slowly, sweeping it in a wide circle about her person, then closing it with force.
When she opened her hand again, Kagome felt her powers slip--her barrier crashed down around her as the energy surrounding her body dissipated entirely. The miko stepped back in alarm, sinking to the ground to stare at the demon in bemusement. How had her energy disappeared so quickly? Never before had Kagome’s walls fallen so easily.
The demoness sighed, not looking at all interested in the miko who lay a hair from helpless before her. She crouched down in front of Kagome, ignoring the way Mai tried to shield the older girl with her own small body.
“Miko.” Kagome held her gaze level with that of the demoness, unwilling to show further weakness. She didn’t flinch as a smirk suddenly cracked the demon’s face.
“Just as weak as you were rumored to be. How unsurprising.” The spirit peered into Kagome’s eyes as though searching for something deep within. The miko narrowed her eyes to glittering slits, warning the demon that she wasn’t quite as helpless as she looked.
The demoness laughed. The sound was cold and heartless, and Kagome’s blood ran cold as the echoes rushed through her bones.
“Don’t get too comfortable in this place. You won’t be staying long.” The demoness allowed one sweet smile to grace her face at the thought of Kagome-no-more. She rose again to her feet and beckoned almost imperceptibly to her fellow demons. They rose as one, slinking gracefully, like Satan’s own minions, to stand around their apparent leader.
“Who are you?” Kagome asked, her fiery voice not betraying the anxiety she felt. Six to one were never good odds, and when the other team was composed entirely of demons…Kagome glanced to Mai, who appeared to have become a neutral party in this matter. The fact that the child did not appear to be unduly alarmed kept the miko from losing her head. She returned her attention to the posse in front of her.
The lead demoness shrugged, her shoulder rising and falling in what could only be a much-practiced gesture. Her silky ebony hair shimmered as her eyes flashed over Kagome’s prone form.
“I am Mirai Shiranai. The dark future,” she replied, her voice a velvety whisper. “Princess of the Realm of Darkness.” She leaned closer to Kagome, lifting a deadly claw-tipped hand to gently trace the miko’s jaw line. “You seem to have acquired some favor with Sesshoumaru. But do not be fooled.” Her crimson eyes burned into Kagome’s own, and the human woman felt as though she might burst into flames from the fury that this demon wrought within her.
As though her thoughts had been heard, Mirai smiled once more. “If you value your life,” she warned, her voice laced with poison, “you would do better than to cross me.” At this the demon rose, strolling back to the steaming waters.
“I’m finished with you…For now. Go find some other place to desecrate.” To her followers, she added, “Get rid of her. She stinks. How I hate humans.” She stretched herself out alongside the pool, seemingly unaware of anything else occurring within the chamber.
The tallest out of the group stepped forward with every intention of “shooing” the humans out of the chamber. But Mai brought herself out of the shadows.
“We both have every right to be here,” she pointed out, her hair bouncing as she shook her head, her eyes blazing with young authority. “We have express permission.”
The large demon scoffed, grabbing the little girl around the middle and practically tossing her out of the room. The she turned her attention to Kagome.

Sesshoumaru stalked down the hallway to the long stairway, but when he caught a glance down those great lengths, he changed his mind. Powerful demon though he may be, hundreds of steps were still hundreds of steps. Instead, he turned and glided silently down a second hallway, stopping only when he reached a seemingly innocuous door to his right.
The demon lord reached a claw out and traced a complicated pattern over the door. He moved gracefully out of the way when he had finished, as the door shook and rattled then slid itself smoothly from the wall to the floor. Sesshoumaru flicked his wrist and the trap-door flew open. He let his full lips turn at the corners to form the slightest grin as he leapt into the hole and allowed gravity to carry him where he wished to go.
**
The lord was still exuberant several seconds later as he landed lightly upon the lowest floor. His feelings were marred only by a sense of discordance that hit him soon after he alighted. He cocked his head to the side; he was curious, and not far from displeased--no one should be fighting inside his home.
Sesshoumaru unhurriedly meandered toward the disturbance. He wasn’t worried about anything serious happening--mostly he was annoyed that he had to put off his mission long enough to deal with some squabble.
He couldn’t stop the sigh that escaped his lips as the negative energies drew him to the bathing chambers. Of course it would be women fighting--fights between female demons were the worst kind.
~*~*~
Kagome and the towering demoness stood across from each other, each glaring daggers in the others’ direction. The demon had attempted to grab Kagome by the arm to drag her from the room, but the miko had put up an unexpected amount of resistance, burning the demoness’ hand extensively in the process.
The women were in no small way surprised when they heard the door to the hall open wide, and Sesshoumaru stepped into the chamber. Each demon immediately bowed deeply, and none but Mirai raised their head until he growled his satisfaction.
Now, however, came the settling of this dispute. Looking from an irate Kagome, to the shaken Mai, to an oblivious Mirai, it wasn’t hard to guess what had happened. Sesshoumaru stifled a groan. These women were no end of trouble to him.
“All of you. Out, now.”
Four of the six glided swiftly past him, not willing to be involved in this conflict. When the tallest continued to glare at the young miko, Sesshoumaru hardened his voice further.
“Shi. Out.”
Shi flicked her ears in his direction, and after a moment of obvious internal debate she turned on her heel and marched indignantly out of the room.
Sesshoumaru turned to the remaining demon in the room.
“Mirai. How good of you to entertain our guest.”
The demoness rolled her eyes, finally coming to a stand and meeting the lord’s eyes with her own.
“You should know better,” she growled at him, “but you want it to be her, don’t you?” She shook her head in disgust, her dark tresses spilling over her shoulders and catching the glint of the fiery coals in the corner.
The demon drew close to her lord and put her mouth to his ear.
“Your scheme does not bode well for our family. In this matter, take care.”
Then the demoness swept out of the room, her soft padded feet making no sound in the corridor beyond.
Kagome stood in the corner of the room with Mai, wondering that the demoness had been allowed to just walk away after obviously defying Lord Sesshoumaru. She trembled at the thought of what he could do to her if she were to defy him. Mai, interpreting her shivers as fear alone, took her hand to comfort her.
Immediately Sesshoumaru’s eyes flashed to their corner, meeting with Kagome’s own--neither one allowed their emotions to show, though Sesshoumaru could feel a strong energy building up within the miko.
“Mai,” he grunted. “Leave us for now.”
The girl seemed reluctant to part with Kagome, but soon enough she had let go and was out into the hall, making sure to close the door behind her.
Sesshoumaru held out a hand, inviting Kagome closer to him. Hesitantly, the miko took a step, and then another, and soon was almost in the arms of a very warm demon lord.
She yelped as he sharply pulled her into him, lowering his head to hers and pressing his lips against her own. Ordinarily Kagome might have protested, but she was still bewildered from her encounter with several upper-class demons, and anyway the way the demon was kissing her was just so damned sexy…
Kagome found that she couldn’t resist reaching a hand up for a touch of long, soft, silvery hair. She pulled her fingers through the locks, pleased that they did not tangle, even in this ridiculous humidity.
A touch was all it took to convince Sesshoumaru that he had a very tough decision to make, and soon. But as he deepened his kiss and his hold on the woman, she moaned, pulling his mouth tighter against her own, and consequences be damned--Sesshoumaru knew he must have her tonight.
He continued his exploration of her mouth while his hands slid about Kagome’s body, tugging on a sash here, pulling on some cloth there, until the loose robe fell right off. If Kagome noticed she was quite suddenly without clothes, she made no mention of it. Instead, she pulled herself closer to the demon, the aches he was creating within her forcing her to search for…something.
The lord lifted Kagome, settling her legs about his waist, then waded into the swirling pool before them. His own clothing slid away with only a thought, and soon the demon and miko were deep within the thundering waters, bodies pressed tightly together, no sounds heard but the rushing of foaming waves past their ears.
