Well, I hope you’re
all happy. I’ve given what you were all waiting for and now it’s time to see
what the aftermath will bring.
The Mistake
The sun’s rays shone brightly
as it began to make its way over the mountains. The sunlight peeked its way
through the door, slowly but surely. As the rays began to shine on the young
woman’s eyes, the light began to rouse her. She sat up, the layers of her
kimono falling from in front of her. As she rubbed the sleep from her eyes, the
memories of what had happened the night before began to invade her mind. It was
then that she realized that she was naked and quickly pulled the kimono she was
lying on up in front of her.
She felt a set of
eyes of staring at her, sending a shiver down her spine. She turned and saw
Sesshomaru sitting on the floor, staring at her intensely. It was almost like
the first time she had met him, except that time, he had seemed so vulnerable.
Now, he was just…scary.
“Rin.” His voice
was…unnerving, almost as though he were angry about something.
She swallowed. “Yes,
m’lord?”
“I want you to forget
about what happened last night.”
She whirled around to
face him. “Why?”
He turned his head,
unable to look at her directly. “What happened between us last night was a
mistake. Plain and simple.”
She shook her head.
“You can’t be serious, Lord Sesshomaru. I thought that-“
“You thought what?”
Her heart ached as
she let the words escape her mouth. “I thought you loved me. I thought you were
finally going to acknowledge my feelings for you.”
Sesshomaru scoffed.
“Ridiculous.” He stood up and began to walk outside.
She pulled her kimono
on around her and began to follow him. She grabbed his arm and tried to hold
him back. He stopped and turned to face her, and when she saw his face, there
was a look in his eyes, as though he were beginning to become aggravated with
her.
She felt a surging
anger rise up in her. “Don’t you dare look at me like that. Like this is my
fault.”
His eyes narrowed.
The anger she was feeling began to boil.
“You bastard! This is
YOUR fault. If it hadn’t been for you, I would be…” She stopped, remembering
all of the times that he had saved her. She bowed her head. “Tell me this. If
you didn’t love me or care about me, why did you rescue me? Why did you save me
all those times?”
His voice was cold,
devoid of any emotion. “I had nothing better to do.”
She knew he was
lying. But that didn’t make his words hurt any less. She felt her heart break
in her chest. The anger turned to anguish, and she could think of nothing else
to do but raise her hand and slap him in the face. The sound of her hand on his
cheek echoed throughout the forest. She went to slap him again, but this time
he grabbed her hand and shoved it away roughly, causing her to fall to the
ground.
She looked at him,
pleading him to reconsider his thoughts with her eyes, but in his, she saw the
same unnerving, unflinching stare that he gave to everyone else. She got to her
feet, heartbroken, then turned away from him and ran away in the direction of
the village.

Sesshomaru watched
her run. He felt strange, like he regretting having to say those things to her.
But it was necessary. He couldn’t let her think that he was really in love with
her. What had happened was a mistake. It wasn’t even him, it was his inner
demon, his basic instinct that had taken hold of his mind and taken things that
far. It wasn’t anything more than a need that…had to be fulfilled.
He turned and walked
away, angry with himself for losing control. He didn’t know what it was about
that girl that brought out those feelings in him, but it was becoming a
nuisance.
Maybe it’s not even her fault you do these things. Maybe it’s just
because you’re your father’s son.
Sesshomaru frowned as
he began to walk into the forest. “That’s no excuse.”

As she ran away from
the hut, Rin cried. She couldn’t do anything else. Everything that he had done,
all of her memories of him valiantly rescuing her and caring for her, keeping
her out of harm’s way, they’d been corrupted. It didn’t matter that he was
lying. It still hurt.
She began to wish that
he had never brought her back to life. Then she wouldn’t be able to feel the
anguish, the disappointment that was overtaking her.

Kagome was sitting
outside, holding her baby in her arms as she watched Kaede run around and play
with the other children. She smiled. Children were always entertaining.
Watching her run around with that smile on her face, it made her think of all
the times she had watched Rin play when she was younger.
Her smile faded. She
looked at Hitomi’s sleeping face as she wondered where Rin could be. She hadn’t
seen her since they had been brought in the herbs they had been picking that
day the girl told them Sesshomaru had left the village. She had left in some
sort of…trance, like there was a lot on her mind.
She worried about
Rin. Ever since she had seen Sesshomaru hurt like he was, she had
been…different. She began to wonder what Rin was doing and hoped that it wasn’t
anything that she would regret. Kagome liked helping people, but she wanted to
be there for her children. She was a mother first, after all.
Just then, she saw a
figure running in their direction. She couldn’t tell who it was, but she could
hear them crying. As the figure got closer, she saw a blue kimono that was
flowing in the wind, as though it were a cape.
Rin ran past her, her
arms around her waist, trying to hold her kimono closed. Kagome watched as she
ran into the hut and threw herself down on the floor, crying and sobbing
uncontrollably. She went in and laid the baby down, then walked over to where Rin
was and sat down next to her. “What happened, Rin? Is something wrong?”
Rin was crying too
hard to answer her. She put her hand on Rin’s leg and noticed that it was cold and
clammy, almost as though some sort of liquid had dried over it. She looked
closer and saw that there was dried blood. She couldn’t see any wounds on her,
so she could only think…
She began to shake
Rin, who was just lying there, sobbing softly. As she quieted down, Rin tried
to sit up straight. Kagome tried to wait until speaking to her again. “What happened, Rin? Where have you been?”
Rin waited a moment
before answering. “I was…I was with Lord Sesshomaru.”
Kagome frowned at
her. “Doing what?”
Rin looked away. She
didn’t answer.
“You already know
what she was doing, Kagome.” Inuyasha’s voice came from the door of the hut. “You
can tell from the blood that’s on her leg.”
Rin looked at them,
but still said nothing. She bowed her head, unable to look them in the eyes.
“I want you to know,
I followed you last night. I know everything that happened.” Inuyasha’s voice
was stern. “And even if I hadn’t, you’re covered in his scent. It wouldn’t take
much to figure out what happened.”
Kagome sighed and
turned to Rin. “So, you and Sesshomaru…”
Rin nodded.
“So why were you
crying?”
“Because…because he
told me he didn’t love me.”
Inuyasha scoffed. “I
could’ve told you that.”
Kagome pulled Rin
close. “Rin, listen to me. I think I’m beginning to understand what’s happened
to your feelings for Sesshomaru. He’s been like a father to you, and over time,
those feelings evolved into something more.” She began to rub Rin’s shoulder,
trying to comfort her. “But Sesshomaru is a demon, and demons don’t feel the
way humans do.”
“That’s not true. It
can’t be.” Rin shook her head fiercely.
“Rin, face facts.
That’s the way things are,” said Inuyasha.
“But if that’s true,
then why are you here, hmmm? Can you answer that?” Rin looked at him
expectantly, as though she were actually expecting an answer.
Inuyasha was taken
aback by her directness, and could only close his mouth and turn his face
toward the door.
Kagome placed her
hands on Rin’s shoulders and looked her in the eyes. “Do you really believe
Sesshomaru loves you, Rin?”
Rin looked away for
just a moment, then turned back to Kagome and nodded.
Kagome nodded. “Then
listen to me. However you feel about Sesshomaru is your business. If you
believe that he loves you, then you hold onto that. Believe it, with all your
heart. And maybe one day, he will tell you that he loves you.”
Rin nodded and a
small smile crossed her face. “Thank you, Kagome.”
“Now go take a bath,
that smell is getting real annoying.” Inuyasha turned up his nose.
Rin giggled a little and
flashed her trademark smile. “Okay!”
And with that she was
gone.
Inuyasha lay down on
the floor beside Hitomi. “You don’t really believe that Sesshomaru loves her, do
you?”
Kagome chuckled. “And
what if I do?”
Inuyasha looked at
her. “C’mon, Kagome, you and I both know that the only thing Sesshomaru cares
about is himself.”
“If that were true,
then she wouldn’t be here and we wouldn’t be having this conversation, now would
we?”
“So you really think
Sesshomaru loves that girl?”
Kagome came over and
knelt down beside him. “I think he has feelings for her, he just refuses to
acknowledge them.” She smiled. “He’s kind of like you, when the two of us
started working together.”
Inuyasha frowned.
“Don’t compare him to me. We’re nothing alike.”
“Of course you are.
You both seem to have a weakness for helping human females in need.”
Inuyasha laid a hand
on the rosary on his neck. “I didn’t have much of a choice at first.”
Kagome rolled her
eyes. “The point is, Rin believes that Sesshomaru loves her. And truth be told,
I think he does too. At the very least, he cares for her a great deal. But I
don’t think he understands what’s going on with him, so he tries to ignore it
and be his usual self. But something happened last night that he couldn’t
ignore, and it caused him to act.” She lifted the baby from its bed and cradled
her in her arms. “I think that’s the reason your father gave Sesshomaru the
Tenseiga. He probably figured Sesshomaru would encounter something like this
someday.”
Inuyasha cocked an
eyebrow. “What does Tenseiga have to do with this?”
“Think about it,
Inuyasha. If Sesshomaru had had any other sword with him, when that moment came
for him to decide whether he was going to save Rin or not, he would’ve walked
past her like nothing happened. Your father knew this. It may even be the
reason he had Tenseiga made in the first place.”
Inuyasha pondered her
words for a moment. “So, you think the old man had all of this in mind when he
passed? All the things that’ve happened to me and Sesshomaru were part of some
plan?”
“Maybe not everything that has happened. But it would explain some things,
like how your father knew about your demonic blood before you were even born.”
“He
did know Sesshomaru for a long time before he died. But how did he know
Sesshomaru would make the right choice?”
Kagome
shrugged. “I don’t think he did. But he had faith and believed in Sesshomaru
enough to trust him to make the right choice.”
Inuyasha
looked at the ground. “My old man was weird.”
“Either
way, he’s not here to tell us. But I do believe that Sesshomaru will do the
right thing. Not just for himself, but for Rin as well.”
Inuyasha
scoffed again. “If you say so.”

As
Rin washed away the blood and fluids from the night before from her body, she
thought about everything that happened between her and Sesshomaru, and realized
that Kagome was right. She knew that Sesshomaru was the kind of person to bury
his emotions, as he considered them weakening. But his actions, over time,
became his way of communicating his thoughts and feelings.
She
took comfort in this realization, and smiled. No matter what, her Lord
Sesshomaru would always be with her, to defend her and keep her out of harm.
And no matter what, I will always be with
you, Lord Sesshomaru.
