Disclaimer: I don't own or profit from Inuyasha. This story is just for fun! |
The next day, we all woke up before the sun; getting into the air just as it was beginning to rise. Glancing over Shippo, I fought my urge to dig my hands into him as I watched the land below. Knowing what I was looking for, the kitsune cleared his throat to get my attention. Looking down, I noticed his bulbous eyes staring up at me. “Just don’t go overboard today,” reminded his childish, scratchy voice, making me smile slightly.
“I’ll try but its so hard to say no to those who need it,” I sighed, blinking when I saw smoke rising out of the forest.
Already knowing what I was going to ask, the kitsune turned toward the column; the others catching on to what was happening fairly quickly. Coming up beside them on Kilala, Sango and Miroku gave me matching concerned glances. “Are you sure this is a good idea? You were pretty exhausted yesterday,” the monk protested.
“I know but those people still need help. I will do my best to make sure I don't hurt myself again,” I responded.
“Rin does not think that is good enough,” came an admonishment to my right, drawing my attention to the small child sitting on Ah-Un.
“Neither does Kagome and Inuyasha,” Shippo informed, drawing a groan from me.
“This Sesshomaru will observe to make sure she does not over-exert herself,” came an assurance that shocked all of them. All except Sango.
“Its the alpha’s job to ensure the safety of the pack,” she explained, helping to set the others more at ease. Though, it did cause a faint yell from the hanyou on the ground.
While Sango’s explanation made sense, I desperately wanted it to mean more. Especially after last night. While nothing had happened, it had been fun to pretend he was protecting me for other reasons. Then again, the youkai barely knew me. There was also the little fact about how he felt toward my species. Not to mention all I knew about him was from an anime that was likely inaccurate in parts. All in all, I really should try to keep my feelings more in check when it came to the Taiyoukai.
Cursing myself internally, I kept my gaze firmly on the burning village we were approaching. As we got closer, I felt my heart drop when I saw the raid still in progress. Frowning, I looked over toward Rin with deep concern. “Ah-Un, set down somewhere safe and far away. Inuyasha and Kagome should go with you to keep you safe,” I ordered, not caring that I was stepping on Sesshomaru’s toes.
“Oi! Who gave you the right to order me!” came a protest that had me glaring down at the half demon as he jumped up to glower at me.
“Inuyasha, let’s do as she says. Rin doesn’t need to be here and she needs more protection than a dragon and a toad,” Kagome soothed, earning a ‘keh’ as they went back down. Thankfully, Ah-Un was already heading toward a meadow far from the action.
Nodding slightly, I directed Shippo to land a ways from the village; sliding off him to prepare my weapon. “Go join Kagome and Inuyasha,” I hissed out, keeping an eye out for any approaching marauders.
“But, I can help!” he protested, swirling his fox fire around himself as if to prove his point.
Closing my eyes, I took a moment to remind myself he was a child. So, with as much patience as I could muster, I knelt to meet his green eyes. “I know and we would be lucky to have you but the others need you more,” I tried, hoping he would buy it. Thankfully a smile spread over his freckled face and his tiny chest puffed out with self importance.
“Alright! I’ll go protect mama!” he declared before scampering off into the forest, Kilala on his heels.
Once he was gone, I turned to the others to see they were all ready for combat. The only exception being Sesshomaru. His posture was almost bored, his expressionless eyes meeting mine neutrally. Then he was simply turning on his heel and walking toward the beleaguered village. Blinking, I followed close behind him with the others. As we broke through the trees, the scent of blood and smoke assaulted us. Before us, bodies of the villagers littered the vermillion soaked ground. Sitting on top of a pile of them was a bearded man drinking something out of a fresh skull.
Before any of us could move, Sesshomaru was gone; reappearing with the man held up in his one hand. The other men never even had a chance to stop him before he was relieving the leader of his head. Crimson soaked the white of his kimono as he dropped the body to turn to the rest of the gang. With weapons drawn, they surrounded him. With a flick of his wrist, the Killing Perfection summoned his poison whip, easily cutting the group in half. Once finished, he turned back to us with the same, bored expression.
Honestly impressed by how quickly he dispatched them, I bowed. “Thank you for your assistance Lord Sesshomaru,” I thanked before striding in among the still panicked villagers. After a few hours, and with the help of those who weren’t too wounded, we put out the fires and gathered those that needed the most help. Kagome and Sango gathered herbs while I focused on healing those that were nearly dead. However, it wasn’t too long before I started to get fatigued. A fact the youkai next to me seemed to sense
While I was leaning over a mother that had a deep stomach wound, I felt a clawed hand on my shoulder. Craning my head to meet his gaze, my heart sank when he gave a firm shake of his head. “But, she could be a mother. She could have a child like Rin or even Shippo. If I can help her,” I protested, only to have him shake his head again. Behind me, I could hear her breathing getting more shallow and panic filled me. Trying to shrug off his grip, I found myself spun to face him.
“This Sesshomaru keeps his promises,” he stated, his words stabbing right through my heart.
The faces of my companions flashed through my mind, the worry clear in their expressions. Especially Rin. Yet, that didn’t make it easier for me to just allow someone to die when I could help. However, I knew all too well that if I kept going like this I would perish. Sighing, I reluctantly nodded; simply doing my best to take care of the wounds with my hands alone. Despite my best efforts, the fight had been long ago lost. The woman gasped her last, her eyes begging me to save her to the last. Uttering a sob, I shook my head as I took a step back. That was when Sesshomaru stepped forward.
Drawing his Tenseiga, he slashed down at the imps only he could see. The body regained its rosy hue, breathing in deeply while her wounds healed instantly. Thanking us both, the woman got to her feet and exited; leaving me alone with the Taiyoukai. Despite knowing so much about him, I had forgotten about his sword. “Thank you,” I whispered with a bow, meaning every word. I knew his distaste for the weapon’s life giving properties and knew full well what it meant for him to use it.
“This Sesshomaru is merely fulfilling his duty,” he responded simply before exiting the hut to head to the next one.
Between all of us, we had most of the villagers taken care of by the time it was midnight. By that time, every bone in my body ached. Yet, I felt satisfied. I had learned more about first aid today than I had in a lifetime. All skills I would need once I was too tired to heal my friends. Yet, none had helped as much as the Killing Perfection. He had brought so many back to life, acting as if the act was nothing to him. The entire Inu-tachi knew better, however. While most of them accepted it, Inuyasha was suspicious.
Swatting the hanyou lightly, Kagome rolled her eyes at his nervousness. “Don't look a gift horse in the mouth Inuyasha. Without him, so many more would be dead,” she chastised, placing her hands on her hips.
“I ain’t sayin’ he’s doin’ somethin’ bad, I just don’t think he’s doin’ it outta the goodness of his heart,” he protested heatedly as we headed back into the forest to meet up with Kouga and his crew.
“I have to agree. Sesshomaru hates bringing anyone back to life. Why was he doing it so easily back there?” I pondered out loud, glancing behind us at the stoic male following a good distance behind.
He was no doubt able to hear us speaking but he showed no sign of it, his face as blank as ever. Getting back onto Shippo after he transformed, we rose into the air; a whimper coming out of me as I forced my eyes to stay open. “Is Jade afraid of heights?” asked a small voice to my right, drawing my attention to a concerned Rin.
“Yeah, a little bit,” I confessed with a smile, watching as she seemed to be considering something.
Then she was bending forward to whisper something in Ah-Un’s ear, resulting in the dragon veering close to Shippo. Before I could stop, her, she was jumping; my heart leaping in my throat as I scrambled to catch her. Thankfully, she managed to end up in my arms, my back pressing against the kitsune under me as she giggled. Setting her carefully beside me, I sat up and tried to calm my racing heart. “Please don’t do anything like that again. Its dangerous,” I pleaded gently, doing my best to slow my breathing as well.
Pouting, she nodded before simply walking over to the edge of Shippo’s balloon body to glance down. Before I could ask her to come back, she was motioning me to her. Moving close enough to grab her just in case, I peered down at the myriad of forest and meadows passing below us. A sight many modern people wouldn’t see in a hundred years. Despite my deep terror, it was gorgeous and I took a few moments to appreciate it. “While being up high may be scary, you are safe with Shippo,” she declared sweetly, wiggling out of my arms to sit next to me.
Wrapping an arm around her shoulders, we watched the scenery pass until sunset. While the ride had been nice, I couldn’t help but feel happy we were setting down for the night. As soon as we were close enough, I was slipping off the transformed kitsune; turning to help Rin off next. The moment she was on the ground, the child was heading off toward a meadow we had spotted on our way down. Sighing, I followed close behind, figuring there was no harm in me taking babysitting duties for a bit.
Reaching the clearing in no time, I took a seat among the flowers; grateful for the brief moment to relax after the day. Of course, Rin was already at work making wreaths and crowns for the entire group. “Don’t go too far now,” I called, Watching as she managed to get a few feet away from me. Thankfully, she waved in understanding and went no further. Picking a flower for myself, I inhaled the scent deeply. I didn’t notice the young girl in front of me looking at me with complete terror on her face.
Next thing I knew, I was knocked away like a rag doll; something inside me breaking as blood spurted from my mouth. Fighting to catch my breath around likely busted ribs, I pushed myself up to see a massive tiger youkai stalking toward young Rin. Narrowing my eyes, I drew my weapon and charged forward, not caring for the pain lancing through me. All that mattered was stopping this beast from killing an innocent child. Letting out a war cry and pouring what energy I had left into my sword, I surrounded it with flames before slashing at the huge feline.
Letting out a yowl, the thing spun toward me; hate burning in amber eyes as Rin ran off screaming. “You... I have been waiting years for an opportunity like this!” it roared, lunging at me with fangs bared and an intent to kill.
“That girl could be used as a handy bargaining chip and you ruined years of work!” the demon snarled as it pound upon me, pinning me to the ground.
“You will pay for this with your life,” it hissed, opening its mouth to bite off my head.
In one, final act of defiance, I channeled my flames into my palms; touching them to its paws and briefly setting it on fire. Yowling, it leapt off me; allowing me to get to my feet. Getting up once more, I lifted my weapon as I spit out blood to one side. “I would do it again in a fucking heartbeat,” I snarled, gathering what strength I had for a final stand. If I was going to die, I wouldn’t make it easy. Hissing, the tiger sat on its haunches; a red aura swirling around it before it took on the guise of a human male.
Slitted, amber eyes glowered at her; his stark, orange hair standing up from his head like flames. Black stripes colored his cheeks, his youki swirling his clothes around him. Red hakama adorned his legs while a white haori covered his torso. Drawing his own blade, he cracked his neck to one side before smiling. “Months of training to hide my youki. Months of stalking and waiting. Ruined by a single, human,” he spat, rushing forward to meet my blade with his.
Just as he was about to swing at me, there was a blur of white in the way. To my complete shock, Sesshomaru was before me; the attacker’s weapon embedded in his palm. Acidic blood dribbled onto the ground with audible hisses but the Killing Perfection seemed completely unperturbed. The tiger, on the other hand, had gone completely ashen. “L-lord Sesshomaru...,” he sputtered before sheathing his weapon and taking a knee. Glancing down at the other youkai, he cracked his knuckles before hoisting the feline into the air.
“Your Lord has been a problem before and we have given him many chances. If any further action is taken against my pack or ward I will have to interpret it as an act of war,” he informed calmly, dropping the tiger and watching him scamper away.
Chuckling through the pain, I looked up at the taller male. “What took you so long?” I asked sarcastically, too out of it to really think much of the light glare he wore on his face.
“This one did not sense or smell danger. If you had not been with Rin...,” he whispered, reaching out his only hand to steady her.
Gripping my side, I shook my head to clear my vision while I felt my legs beginning to weaken. The severity of my wounds was sending me into shock and I had no more energy left to heal myself. A soft growl came from above me before she was swept into his one arm and carried deeper into the forest. While confused, I couldn’t argue. Instead, I slightly slapped my own cheeks to stay awake. Falling asleep while going into shock was likely not a good idea.
To my shock, he carried me to a nearby cave; unravelling the tail around his shoulder before setting me down in it. Taking a seat across from me, he took off my shirt without warning, growling at what he saw. Looking down, I sucked in a gasp of horror. The skin over my ribs was an ugly mix of purples, reds and yellows. Unfortunately, the rapid inhale had me coughing, blood flying while pain burned through my side. “Hold still,” he commanded, carefully running a claw over my tender skin and drawing blood. Then he was bending down to lick at the area.
All I could do was stare at him, not even daring to breathe while I tried to comprehend what was happening. While fanfics couldn’t really be considered canon, a lot of their concepts made sense. Especially when it came to youkai behaviors. In most, healing wounds with saliva was seen as a highly intimate act. Usually reserved for a mate or a romantic interest. The way he was looking at her certainly wasn’t helping these thoughts.
Golden eyes practically bored into mine while the pain gradually faded. In those enigmatic orbs, an odd light glowed. Then he was pulling away, carefully replacing my shirt before helping me to my feet. Then he was turning and walking away, as if nothing had happened at all. Thoroughly confused, I followed him back to the camp. As soon as I came within sight, I was tackled by two small figures; both calling my name in distress.
Glancing up, I saw the others wearing worried expressions. With the exceptions of Kouga, his guards, Jaken and Ah-Un. “Rin told us what happened but...,” Kagome began to explain, seeming almost confused.
“You don’t even seem hurt,” Inuyasha finished, Sango wearing a thoughtful look behind him.
When it came to demons, the slayer was no fool. Glancing at Sesshomaru and back to me, she raised a brow in inquiry. “Ah, I had a little energy left to heal myself, though it took a moment,” I fibbed, flinching as I felt Shippo look up at me. Even Inuyasha narrowed his eyes before shrugging and wandering back over to a pot boiling over the fire. Heading to the fire, I felt a bit guilty for not telling them. Still, it felt like something I should keep to myself. Especially after the effort the taiyoukai went through to ensure privacy.
