A/N: Sorry to keep you waiting~
Sesshoumaru entered the courtyard, his pristine white silks billowing around him. The soldiers and servants parted well ahead of him and Kagome followed through the clearing.
She bolted towards Inuyasha then, “Oh my god! What happened?” She cried out, lifting her hands to push the dark fall of Koga’s hair from his face. The side of his face that she could see was sticky and wet with blood. “Inuyasha?”
White ears clapped to his skull tightly and she saw his eyes darken. “He needs help. Now.” He gritted out.
With an imperious gesture, kitsune healers rushed forward to take the broken form of the wolf prince from the hanyou. As soon as he was off Inuyasha, Kagome ran her hands over the half dog. Brown eyes wide and tear filled. When she brushed against his side, he hissed.
Kagome’s fingers tore at the ties of his fire rat robe until he stopped her. “Can you not strip me in public?” he griped, but his eyes were tired and his voice even more so. She nodded, wrapped an arm around him carefully and followed in the direction the healers had gone.
Sesshoumaru was right on her heels.
The healer’s ward was clean and warm. Softly scented of healing herbs and the oil of the many lamps. Kagome pushed Inuyasha to sit on a low platform, and thanked one of the foxes who brought her a deep basin of water and clean cloth. Sesshoumaru watched as Kagome slid the red robe from the muscled form of his sibling. She kneeled as she did so, bringing her face closer to the wounds she would tend. She eyed them with shame and hurt.
He wanted to order her away, rather than see those soft hands trace over bare flesh. He stamped down the instinct. “What happened?” he demanded instead.
Over her shoulder, Kagome met his eyes, “Can’t that wait? He’s hurt?”
Those golden eyes narrowed slightly at the challenge in her voice.
Inuyasha sucked in a breath as the wet cloth moved over his skin, the cleansing herbs stinging a bit. “It’s fine Kagome.”
She blinked up at him from her kneeling position before him, hands stilling momentarily.
“It’s fine” he repeated softly, laying his palm against her cheek.
She sniffed, nodded and ignored the low growl from the door.
Kagome listened carefully as she cleaned his injuries.
“There were two shards” Inuyasha said then, “They set a trap and we fell for it. They kept them together, we thought there was only one enemy to fight, they ambushed us and then split. Koga went after one and I took the other.”
“Did you kill your opponent?”
“Keh. I’m not a weakling. Of course I did. Got the shard too.” He reached into his robes and pulled forth a darkened shard. He was careful to touch it with the cloth and not his skin. “It’s bad though.”
He dropped his eyes from Sesshoumaru to meet Kagome’s eyes. “This shard is venemous.”
She blinked, “Like poisoned?”
“Like so defiled that touching it can infect others with the same malice.”
She reached for it, but Inuyasha pulled it back. “Inuyasha?”
He shook his head, “Last time you purified shards like this, it hurt you.”
She swallowed and licked her lips, “Yeah, but we can’t leave it like that.”
Sesshoumaru stepped forward, his palm turned up, “Give it over.”
Inuyasha tore his eyes from Kagome to look up at his brother, “Huh?”
“The shard.” Sesshoumaru repeated, “Or have all of your senses dulled to include your hearing?”
Inuyasha grunted and dropped the shard into the demon lord’s waiting palm. The result was instant. The shard glittered darkly and the power leapt from it as it fought to overwhelm and control Sesshoumaru.
The demon lord merely tightened his fist around the shard, his youkai effectively subduing the evil of the shard. “See to him Kagome and then come to my office. We will deal with the shard then,”
She nodded, watching him go. “I wonder how he is able to do that?”
Inuyasha huffed, “Evil is subdued by greater evil.” He said simply.
Kagome glowered at him, “Your brother isn’t evil.”
Golden eyes locked on her unblinking, “He is the greatest demon in the lands since my father. He nearly killed you. He is evil Kagome.”
Kagome glared at him, “And he saved Tanta’s father, and Rin, and all of us. The Tenseiga would not obey him if was evil.”
Inuyasha stared at her for a long time. “You changed.”
She blinked, ‘What?”
“You. You changed. Since being here.”
“I have not Inuyasha, you are just being stubborn about him.”
The hanyou shook his head, and slowly reached a clawed hand to cup her cheek, slowly he drew closer. His lips nearly touching hers, “His scent is on you. It’s here on your mouth, in your mouth.”
Her cheeks went crimson and she tried to pull back but Inuyasha was unyielding. His golden eyes searched hers for a moment. “No one knows why he does the things he does, but watch yourself Kagome. He is evil and ice and nothing more. And he will let you shred yourself on him.”
Tears flooded her lash line and she blinked them away, confusion roaring to life within her.
Her gaze lowered and Inuyasha saw her catch her lower lip between her teeth to keep it from trembling. He said nothing, just drew her into the warmth of his familiar embrace.
Kagome wept against him for a number of reasons. One, he and Koga were hurt and she should have been there to help. Two, she had no idea how to deal with Sesshoumaru, and three, Inuyasha’s once comforting embrace, somehow felt wrong to her now. What was she doing?
She pulled back and finished tending his wounds in painful silence.
“My lady?”
She turned to see a silver kitsune before her, ‘Y..yes?”
She held out a cup of steaming tea, “This will ease his pains and help him sleep.”
“Thank you.” Kagome managed, taking the brew. “I need you to drink all of this Inuyasha.”
“That stuff tastes like shit.” He griped.
“Lord Inuyasha,” the fox said then in dulcet tones, “Surely you would not be brought so low by something as small as a cup of medicinal tea?”
Kagome almost smiled, almost.
“Keh.” Inuyasha snatched the cup, blew once and downed it. “Your damn tea can’t do anything to meeeeh”.
Kagome watched as he crumpled back to the platform and blinked.
The fox pressed a gentle hand to his brow and then covered him with a blanket, “Out like a light. Sleep well my lord.”
Kagome watched the fox for a moment, “Sesshoumaru’s orders” she quipped. “The wolf is tended, if you care to look?”
Kagome nodded and followed her to the next room.
Koga lay pale and bandaged on the platform. His hair seemed too dark against his pallor and Kagome slid to her knees beside the bed. “Oh Koga…” Her little hands found his larger one in the blankets and she held it for long minutes. He was sleeping peacefully, no doubt well numbed of his pain.
She stroked his dark hair from his brow and suddenly wished he would open those brilliant blue eyes, say something arrogant, and all would be well with the world again.
Only it wouldn’t.
Inuyasha was right. She had changed. The world had been more black and white before, there had been unchanging constants in her world. Until she had made a deal with Sesshoumaru. Now there was no black and white, only infinite shades of gray.
Her grip on Koga’s hand tightened and she watched a fat tear plop into the wolf prince’s fingers. “I…” she swallowed and tried again, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. It’s always been Inuyasha… always. Chasing after him, caring even when he went.. to Kikyo. Saving her even when it made me want to die inside….because I knew it was what he would want…. And I was ok with that, I was really….but now…I….d-don’t know…..and if I had been there… maybe I could have helped…”
She bowed her dark head and sat silently for a long time, lost in her chaotic thoughts, her only anchor, the unmoving, silent prince she clung to.Sesshoumaru sat in his office for over an hour but the miko did not come. Irritated, he rose from his seat and made his way to the healer’s ward. The stinging scent of her tears reached him as soon as he reached the door. The scent of her stress, fear, sadness, creeping into the calming herbs to abrade his nose. This, was a scent he had rarely caught from her and one he did not like in the least.
He made his way to Inuyasha’s room but saw that his brother was alone, and asleep as ordered. Turning on his heel, he went to Koga.
The sight made him stop.
Koga was lying on his back, having not moved at all since being brought it. Kagome was kneeling beside the low bed, her fingers locked with Koga’s and her head was pillowed on her arm beside him.. The scent of grief here was palpable.
“Kagome” he called.
She didn’t move and he crossed the floor to her. “Kagome?”
She slowly stirred, lifting her head to look around the room before those red, bleary eyes locked on him.
“The office.” She said in small tones, “I’m sorry.”
Sesshoumaru felt a strange pull in his chest and shook his head. He offered his hand to her to help her up but she pushed herself to wobbly feet without his assistance. “I’m ready”.
Sesshoumaru refrained from snorting. She was pale, unsteady and this evening had brought her more upset than she had been ready for apparently. He also disliked the way she kept herself rigid. Away from him.
“Kagome. Come here.”
She shook her head, “I…can’t”
He blinked slowly. “Defying me is not wise.”
She held her hand up between them, “I can’t..” she said again, “I have to be strong on my own right now.”
Ah… here was the crux.
“Kagome meet me in my chambers in ten minutes. We must discuss the shard.”
She nodded and he turned in a whirl of white, leaving her there.Ten minutes later he smelled her at his door, warm woman, and sorrow. ”Enter Kagome.”She pushed the door open enough to slip inside, the heavy panel thudding closed behind her.
Sesshoumaru was standing before the wall of windows near his large bed.
“Where is the shard?” Kagome asked. She wanted to fight it and be done with it before her fragile reserves of strength vanished on her.
“Come here”. That voice was like velvet darker than the night beyond.
“Eh?”
“Kagome….”
A sigh, “All right.” The soft slapping of her slippers against stone floors told him her passage to his side.
“Your scent is displeasing.”
He didn’t look at her, didn’t have to. He knew she was outraged.
“I do not stink!”
“Of sadness and fear. You do.”
She bit back her response.
“Have I harmed you?”
“No.”
“Allowed harm to come to you?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“What?”
“Why do you fear me?”
She sighed sadly, “I don’t fear you...”
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I fear how I feel here.” She had meant to measure her words but true to form blurted out her first thought.
“How you feel?”
She blushed like fire in the dim light and shook her head, “Nevermind that, forget it. I babble when I’m sad.”
She turned to go but he was too quick. She found her back pressed to his front, his arms like steel around her.
“What is it you feel Kagome?” he all but purred near her ear, pleased when the warm fig like scent of her arousal reached him.
“Co..confused. I guess that’s a good word.” She breathed.
“Because you think you love him and you desire me.”
She turned in his arms, “I do not….”
He smirked down at her, “You do not smell of warmth and want when you are with him. I know.”
She went red as a beet. “Stop smelling me… Pervert!”
He closed the distance between them, and dropped his lips to her forehead. “You are grieving their injuries. You blame yourself. Do not.”
“I should have been there, I could have helped.”
“Or gotten them injured worse because of worry for you.”
She glowered at him. “You don’t know that.”
He shrugged, “I know them.”
“But, the ones that hurt them are out there.”
“Only one… and not for long.”
“What?”
“Inuyasha killed one and went to help Koga. That threat is being hunted as we speak.”
“By who?”
“The scouts I have sent of course.”
‘When…?”
“While waiting for you to arrive in my office.”
“And the shard?”
“Will be dealt with tomorrow before I depart.”
His words made her eyes go wide, “Depart… you’re leaving?”
He watched her carefully now and gave a single nod.
“Where?”
“To meet the scouts of course.”
“Can I….?”
“No.”
“But..”
“No.”
She huffed at him, “You don’t know what I was going to say.”
“Irrelevant.”
She flushed with indignation, ‘Why you…”
“Get in bed Kagome.”
No longer red, she was white as a sheet. “What?”
“Get in bed, you are exhausted.”
She nodded and made to leave. “Good night then.”
“My bed kagome.”
She stopped and flinched. Slowly craning her neck to look over her shoulder at him. “Are you…”
“My heat is not upon me.”
“Then…”
“Kagome.”
“Yes?” her voice was a tiny squeak.
“Put on my haori and get in bed. If you return to your room you won’t find any rest. Additionally, the shard may destabilize your miko powers. So, you will stay here. Tonight. With me. We will, discuss, this confusion of yours.”
On one hand she was glad for his presence, on the other she was looking at the spare haori on his bed as though it was a dangerous animal.
Sesshoumaru left the room a moment later. Kagome sighed and shrugged from her many layered robes and tied his large haori in place. It was much too large for her but she was glad because it covered her completely. She waited for a long time, but he didn’t come back. She was eager to give him a sound peice of her mind for ordering her into his bed, despite his many valid points.
The stubborn male did not though, and Kagome finally huffed and still wrapped in his clothing, made her way to her own rooms. She collapsed into her bed, face down. Sleep rising up like a might monster to swallow her in sleep's clutches.
Her mind no longer locked in a self made prison of confusion and doubt. The scent of the Taiyoukai lulling her senses. He was safety.
Sesshoumaru returned two hours later to find his rooms empty. With a chuff of annoyance he followed her sweet scent to her rooms. He found her curled atop the becovers. He thought of waking her and snapping at her for her blatant disobedience.
That was until he looked closer. The shadows beneath her eyes were vivid, they looked puffy due to her tears. He said nothing, but lifted her in one arm, as he raised the bedclothes. She whimpered softly in her sleep and clung to him. He was more than a little pleased in a purely male sort of way that she was wrapped head to toe in his clothing and therefore his scent. He rumbled softly to her.
The fact that she didn't wake only supported his opinion of her weariness.
Once he had settled her beneath the warm covers, he stepped back. His clawed fingers brushing the blue back fringe of her bangs from her brow. "Sleep well Kagome."
Then he turned on his heel and marched back to his own rooms. Her scent lingered there, in his own bedclothes from where she had clearly sat. He forced his body to relax and eased into light sleep.
