Chapter Thirteen:
“The choice is yours.”
The words were left ringing in Kagome’s head while she stared at Sesshoumaru’s turned back. He had walked over to the bank of windows and toward the door leading out onto his very own private patio. What he was looking for out that door, Kagome didn’t know. Her heart gave a painful squeeze in her chest as her eyes greedily drank in his form.
It had been a little more than a week since she had last seen him, since he had put his hands on her body. Her lips were still tingling and throbbing from the force of his kiss, her stomach tied in all sorts of confusing knots. He wanted her to choose. He wanted her to submit to him, his attentions, with an open heart.
This was exactly the opportunity Kagome had been hoping for. How many nights had she lain awake in bed, staring at the ceiling and wishing that she and Sesshoumaru had come together on different terms? Why couldn’t he have just been a normal person, and asked for her phone number instead of blackmailing her to get in her pants?
Standing in his office, well kissed, slightly aroused, and feeling a little dowdy in her clean but well used clothing…Kagome came to one of those rare realizations. She was standing at a precipice in her life, a cross roads. Everything she wanted from him, everything she had cursed fate for denying her, was laid out in front of her. All she had to do was strip down and bend over. Submit.
Or she could walk away.
Souta’s treatments were paid for in full, the shrine was theirs again…she could walk away from the temptation that was Sesshoumaru and never look back. She would never again feel the bite of his hand against her upturned ass, the blistering heat of his kiss. She would never look into his eyes and watch a rare, but captivating, transformation as they went from cold amber to molten gold. She would not have to endure any more of his commands, his forced attentions.
Commands that made her wet, his attentions that a secret part of her so loved. Tentative fingers came up to trace her swollen lips. The taste of him and smell of him, mint and man, was still on her lips. She wanted him, would probably always want him. And why not? He was powerful, an Alpha male in the true sense of the word. But he was also entitled, stubborn, and cold. As far as apologies went…his quite plainly sucked. Yes he had taken the financial burden off of her shoulders, something she would have never dreamed of asking him to do, and yes he had given her an out…
But he wasn’t remorseful. Not in the slightest. He was the same, arrogant, demon demanding things from her as always. There was nothing in this world that Kagome wanted to do more than to capitulate to his demands. To sashay over to that desk, take position, and beg for him to fuck her. Her womanly parts clenched and throbbed at the mere thought of him inside her, filling her. She already knew that the sex between them would be explosive, violent, and raw.
Kagome also knew that she would not be able to hold anything back from Sesshoumaru. Not her inhibitions, and most importantly, not her heart. She was already half in love with the arrogant bastard as it was, and whether that was from sort of twisted Stockholm syndrome type of thing or something else entirely…Kagome didn’t know.
The fact that she wasn’t sure why she loved him…well, that was reason enough to walk away, wasn’t it? What could Sesshoumaru ever offer her except for pain? And not the type of fun, kinky, pull-my-hair-and-slap-my-ass-fun-sex-me pain. But the pain of unrequited love. To him she was little more than a conquest, an object, something to fill his desire. Maybe, on some level, he did actually care for her. But he didn’t love her. There was simply no way. And desire, Kagome knew, faded over time. How long would it take before he tired of her? How long would it be before she was left in the dust? And how much more broken would she be then if she simply walked out that door right now?
Kagome was never one to shy away from a challenge. She was a brave girl who tackled life head on, keeping her chin raised and her heart light. But she knew, simply knew, that this was going to be one challenge that she just had to walk away from.
Choking back on a sob, Kagome spun on her heel and darted out the doors to his office. She stumbled across the oriental carpet as she headed toward the elevator. Daichi was actually standing there, a tentative smile on his face that was wiped clean at the sound of a thunderous roar and the shattering of glass. Flinching, Kagome ran faster. Away from Sesshoumaru and everything he represented. She knew she was making the right decision, knew that walking away (or running) was what was best for her. But if that was the case, why did it feel like someone was tearing her heart from her chest? That jagged shards of glass had taken up residence there? If what she was doing was the right thing…why did she feel so sick to her stomach?
The flight down the elevator and out of the building passed in a daze, as did the long trek back to her run-down apartment across town. When she finally arrived home, it was to find her mother and grandfather chatting merrily, broad smiles on their faces as they packed away what few belonging they had left. Everything of value had long ago been sold, and all that was left were inexpensive but sentimental pieces.
“Hi Kagome! Can you believe-“ Her mother paused, took one good look at her daughter, and rose to her feet. In a heartbeat Kagome was wrapped in warm, gentle, arms. The sweet scent of her mother’s perfume and the soft press of a kiss to her forehead broke down the last of Kagome’s barriers. Great, gulping, sobs racked her body as she wrapped her arms around her mother and buried her face in the crook of Mama’s neck.
“Oh, my sweet, sweet, girl.” Mama crooned softly, simply holding Kagome close to her and rocking back and forth as she did when Kagome was just a baby. She didn’t demand answers, didn’t try to tell Kagome that everything was going to be alright, she simply offered comfort and love. Kagome fell apart in her arms, absorbing her mother’s strength and love as she cried out the pieces of her broken heart. Walking away had been the right decision, even if it did hurt like hell.
Little did Kagome know that it was a decision whose resolve would be tested.
//////////////////////////////////////////////Months Later
\\\
Inuyasha had finally had enough. It had been months since he had seen Kagome, and he knew there was something going on that his practically life-long friend was hiding from him. It was only a few months ago that he had found out about Souta, Kagome’s little brother, and the cancer the boy had very narrowly beaten. Much to everyone’s delight and surprise, Souta was in remission. He had gone home for the first time only a couple of months ago…around the time that they had graduated.
Inuyasha hadn’t seen Kagome since then. It was like his friend had dropped off the face of the planet. She wasn’t returning his calls, emails, or chats. She hadn’t been talking to any of their mutual friends either. Everyone was growing concerned. The few times they had shown up at the shrine looking for her, Kagome’s stern faced grandfather had shooed them away.
“She’s got meningitis! An infection of the little toe! Covered in adult chicken-pox, very contagious!”
After the third time, when Kagome supposedly had “Aching corns and odd growths on her face” Inuyasha was beginning to doubt the sincerity of Kagome’s hoary, wily, grandfather. The old geezer had never liked Inuyasha very much, and Inuyasha wasn’t blind to the fact that the old man’s fingers twitched towards his crappy sutras every time he came to visit the shrine.
Inuyasha might’ve been capable of letting it go. He knew that Kagome was a steady friend, and if she wanted to hang out or pick up where they left off, she would and could do it at any point. He might’ve been able to just let it go…if not for the way she had looked at him the last time they saw each other.
It was right after graduation, everyone was cheering and snapping pictures, someone had actually set off fireworks (illegal ones, which had garnered the attention of the police) and everyone was shouting out congratulations and giving hugs. He remembered seeing Kagome start to walk towards her Mom and Grandfather, a hint of a smile curling at the corners of her lips. Without thinking he grabbed her arm and pulled her into a deep hug. When he pulled back and looked down at her upturned face, the look of pain that colored her chocolate eyes was so acute it was startling. There was a depth to that pain, as if it had been sitting there, festering, for some time. The way she looked up at him, with her heart in her eyes, it was as if she were looking at someone else. As if she didn’t see him at all.
“Congratulations, Inuyasha!” the false cheer in her voice, so at odds with the pain in her eyes, still set the hair at the nape of his neck to rising. “We finally made it, huh? I’m just gonna go say hi to my Mom. I’ll see you at the after party, eh?” And with a jaunty wave she jogged over to her family.
She hadn’t shown up at the after party. No one, himself included, had seen her since. Kagome had withdrawn from her friends and Inuyasha wanted to know why. If he had been a better friend, maybe he would have seen that Kagome was hurting long before their graduation. Guilt and frustration gnawed at Inuyasha. Kagome had been his best friend since kindergarten. She was the one who was always there to lend a helping hand when it was needed, a shoulder for all the girls to cry on. Inuyasha didn’t know how many times over the course of their friendship he had vented to Kagome. She always knew when something was bothering him, could see through his bluster, and was always there with a smile and a hug. Kagome was one of the kindest, most genuine people he knew. It shocked and irritated him to find out that Kagome’s brother had had cancer, and she hadn’t told him about it. He had been so distracted with Kikyo (his girlfriend) and all the drama that went with dating one of your oldest friends, that he hadn’t really given Kagome a spare thought. Shame wormed inside of him, making him uncomfortable.
A good friend would have known something was up. Hadn’t Kagome always been able to see through him? So now that her brother was out of the hospital, the cancer was gone, what else could possibly keep Kagome from returning his calls. Was she mad at him?
Inuyasha was determined to find out. This time he didn’t take the usual way up to the shrine. Most times he walked right up the front steps just like everyone else did. But going that way put him in eyesight of the old curmudgeon. That old battle axe would take one look at him and doubtlessly tell him another tall tale about Kagome being too sick to have visitors. For fucks sake, Inuyasha wasn’t an idiot. Brash, a little dense at times admittedly, but no one got that sick. And he was pretty freaking sure that growths and little toe infections weren’t actually contagious. No, Kagome wasn’t sick. She was avoiding him and the rest of her friends. And she had sicced the geezer on them.
If Inuyasha was a normal human, such a tactic might’ve worked. But he was a half demon and a determined one at that. It was easy to hop from tree to tree, overhead and out of sight. He bypassed Kagome’s grandfather who was diligently sweeping the front walkway to the shrine.
“Keh,” Inuyasha chuckled as he leapt from tree to tree. “That old watch dog aint gonna stop me.”
He moved stealthily through the forest surrounding the Higurashi shrine, his form a blur as he darted from tree branch to tree branch, following Kagome’s elusive scent. Sesshoumaru might be a right bastard, but Inuyasha owed him a lot for his ‘training’. Even if the majority of the training consisted of that prick beating a young Inuyasha into the ground. His dick of a half-brother had, after all, taught him how to fight and how to use his demonic abilities and senses. Senses which he was now putting to use as he tracked down Kagome to the very rear of the Higurashi property.
She was tending the family garden, her back turned to him, her long raven hair pulled back into one of those complicated girly braids, the wind teasing the hairs at the nape of her neck. There wasn’t much left in the garden during this time of year, but she had a basket full of herbs and roots hooked onto one arm as the other reached to pluck at some weeds choking what was left of the garden. Her cheeks were flushed from the chill in the air, her hands covered in dirt, and her familiar voice hummed an off key tune.
Inuyasha leapt from his perch, landing silently in the shadows of the trees. It was as he was walking toward his old friend, a smirk stretching across his lips at his ability to thwart the old mam, when he noticed it. It was a combination of things really, that had Inuyasha freezing in place and wiping the smirk from his face.
The wind shifted, bringing Kagome’s scent to him strong and clear. It had changed, just slightly, to become sweeter. Fuller. More. And as the wind shifted, so did Kagome. No longer facing away and looking down, she turned to the side, her face lifted up to the sky overhead and the scraggly gray clouds that chased their way across a murky sky. A worried frown pulled between her eyebrows, her brown eyes full of shadows. Her cheeks were slimmer. Washed out. She had the look of a grieving widow, of someone who had lost much in a short amount of time. There were dark circles under her eyes, and new lines of stress pinching her lips. But the thing that had Inuyasha inhaling a sharp, startled, breath was the unmistakable curve to her stomach.
Kagome was…
Pregnant.
A/N:
I know. You don’t have to tell me. I’ve been gone too long, this chapter was too short, and there was no smut. Where’s the smut? Also, I knocked her up (well, not me, Sesshoumaru and a lack of a condom did that). Why? Whyyyy?
Well, I’ve been gone so long because I have to minions of destruction on my hands. And they are both mobile now. ( O.O ) Terrifying, I know. Kids, work, new house, and a new business (go etsy!) have kept me busy. Sorry!
The chapter was so short because the NEXT chapter is gonna be awesome-sauce. Well, I think it is. It took me a really long time to figure out where the hell I was going to go with this fic. Writing plain old smut is much easier. I had an epiphany, and now you have a chapter. The next one will be created between naps and late nights. And there will most likely be smut.
Thank you guys so much for your continued interest in my fic ^^
