Chapter 13: Death
~*~*~
The dark storm clouds slowly began to gather in the night sky above as Kagura stumbled through the dense forest while panting heavily as she threw herself at the nearest tree; clinging onto it for dear life.
I can’t die this way…not like this… not from a stupid ambush, Kagura thought determinedly.
However, despite her determination to live, Kagura weakly slumped forward against the tree and tried to support herself up with one hand, as the other hung limply from her side.
The blood from her claw dripped slowly and steadily while it sizzled as it touched the grass blades below; most of the blood was hers, but the others…
Sesshoumaru…Kagura thought worriedly.
Kagura silently hoped that the Taiyoukai was alright, but from the look of things, he wasn’t fairing too well because of his injuries.
Kagura hissed and clenched her teeth in pain as she tried to pull herself up straight against the tree. As soon as she stood in an upright position, she slowly turned and leaned against the tree before she weakly slid down against its large trunk.
Shakily, she reached up to her upper arm and hesitantly looked over at her injury.
It was a large, profusely bleeding gash, but what made it so different this time was not the fact that it was very large and deep; it was the fact that her wound was teeming and oozing with strong poison.
Gingerly, Kagura reached over and touched the large wound, oozing with tar black poison.
As soon as she touched her festered wound, Kagura cried out in agony; watching in horror as her flesh sizzled and released more poisoned blood, before it lightly emitted small streams of smoke from the pink, irritated flesh.
However, her injury was only a minor scratch compared to Sesshoumaru’s own wounds.
~*~*~
“She’s mine,” Sesshoumaru growled menacingly.
He struggled to hang on to Tokijin while holding his sword-wielding arm in pain; his poisoned blood slowly trickling all the way from the gash across shoulder and down to the very tip of his hanging sword at his side.
Normally, poison wouldn’t affect him…but this poison…there was something unusual about it.
Lividly, Sesshoumaru looked up and glared at the large, red-eyed demon that stood proudly on a sturdy tree branch halfway across the clearing.
The heavy breeze of an oncoming storm brushed the strands of his slightly short red hair, as he flexed his sharp, blood covered claws; showing off the powerful muscles of his arm that belong to a strappingly built frame.
The orange-red kimono that flapped majestically in the wind matched almost perfectly with his bright red hair as his dark green eyes sparkled in amusement at the similarly aged Taiyoukai below him.
Loathe wouldn’t even describe the feelings Sesshoumaru felt for the other Taiyoukai that stood arrogantly from across him.
Masanori…Sesshoumaru inwardly snarled.
How dare the Taiyoukai of the Eastern Lands challenge him for his mate?
Sesshoumaru knew that Masanori was also after the Kamiken, so he had to keep Kagome and their pups somewhere safe…but to stoop so low as to ambush him before challenging him for his mate…
Angrily, Sesshoumaru gripped his sword tightly.
Then again, this was the very same demon that had tried to attack and kidnap Kagome over a year ago; he shouldn’t expect anything less from a demon that resorted to low, dirty tricks to get his way.
Masanori smirked as he looked down at the injured inu Taiyoukai.
“Is she now?” Masanori purred.
If his spies didn’t witness it for themselves, then Masanori would’ve been sure that they were lying.
A few small lizards that hung around Sesshoumaru’s castle came back and reported that they had seen the young miko out in the courtyard today.
Of course, Masanori was upset that the enemy had Kagome within the walls of his castle, but what really sent him into a flying rage was that they had reported that the miko was heavily pregnant with the inuyoukai’s pups.
Masanori had just seen the beautiful, young miko not too long ago, travelling with her companions; unmated and definitely not pregnant.
The miko was one of the main keys to obtaining the Kamiken; now she was carrying another male’s offspring and not just any other male…
Sesshoumaru had beaten him to Kagome first, but it didn’t matter anymore.
First, Masanori would kill the other Taiyoukai, before he would kill his little pups and then reclaim the miko for himself, so that she would be carrying his seed instead.
It disgusted Masanori that Sesshoumaru was her first, but very soon he would rid the miko of the inuyoukai’s scent and those brats; even if he had to rip them out from the safety of her womb.
Kagome was his from the very start; that was until Sesshoumaru discovered the miko’s secret…
Masanori straightened himself as he glared down at Sesshoumaru in contempt and nearly smirked when he noticed that the inuyoukai had winced in pain.
“Ah yes, it seems that you are unfamiliar with the poison of a Komodo dragon demon. I’m not surprised…it is such a deadly rarity,” Masanori stated.
Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes at the smug youkai Lord.
Komodo dragon poison was a rare, yet hot commodity amongst travelling youkai merchants, as it could easily kill another’s foe within as little as a few minutes or for stronger opponents; a mere few hours.
Poisonous attacks usually didn’t affect him, but then again, Sesshoumaru hadn’t encountered every type of poison out there.
A haze of fatigue was beginning to set in, but no matter what Sesshoumaru tried to do, he couldn’t shake it off.
Perhaps the poison was too strong, but then again, this fatigue wasn’t coming from him or the poison…
Kagome.
No, he couldn’t allow himself to be defeated…not with his family’s lives at stake tonight.
His mate had gone into labor, but she was a human giving birth to two full-fledged youkai; there was no way Kagome could deliver them safely if she was weakened.
Sesshoumaru just had to hang in there long enough for her to give birth to them; then he could die without regret.
“What’s the matter, Sesshoumaru? Don’t tell me that you’re too weak to fight me. That’s not much of a challenge,” Masanori taunted.
Sesshoumaru said nothing as he ignored the burning, blistering pain of his wounds and raised a glowing, electrified Tokijin towards Masanori; unleashing his attack.
He had no time to waste; although Masanori had been pushed back on his list of priorities recently, the bear youkai seemed to have quickly pushed his back to number one.
Masanori needed to be dealt with now.
Although Naraku was out there, weakened somewhere; Kagome was also weakened too.
Instantly, Masanori disappeared just before the lightning strikes of Tokijin’s attack completely obliterated the tree he stood on.
Suddenly, Masanori reappeared in front of Sesshoumaru, but the inuyoukai was already prepared for him, as he swiftly slashed his sword across the air; causing the bear youkai to jump back to evade him.
Masanori knew that Sesshoumaru wasn’t going to give up without a fight, but neither was he.
Sesshoumaru was so distracted by Kagome’s weakening bond as well as his own pain that he barely detected and dodged a sharp tentacle that had unexpectedly struck out at him from the forest behind.
“Did you think I was going to miss out on your death, Lord Sesshoumaru?” Naraku sneered as he emerged from the dark forest.
This wasn’t the baboon pelt-clad Naraku, but instead, this was the same Naraku that Sesshoumaru had fought not too long ago.
The fact that Naraku was working alongside with Masanori, let Sesshoumaru know how far the bear youkai was willing to go with his filthy tricks.
Disgraceful.
Naraku chuckled.
“It was so kind of you to weaken my opponents for me,” Naraku smirked as he slowly stepped closer to the forest clearing.
When Naraku finally stepped out far enough into the clearing, he tugged at his haori collar and it pulled down to reveal his shoulder.
In an instant, his flesh began to morph and bubble underneath the surface of his shoulder’s skin. The flesh of his whole left arm growing larger and larger, until two of the large vein-covered flesh bubbles, began to take shape.
Sesshoumaru didn’t flinch at all at the sight of his dead half-brother’s face as the inu hanyou’s head, along with Koga’s slumped lifelessly from the side of Naraku’s shoulder.
“They were all too injured to fight me again and I have you to thank for that. It made absorbing them much easier for me and now it’s your turn to join them. I’ll be taking the jewel shards now,” Naraku said.
Quickly, the evil hanyou’s arm turned into another sharp tentacle and swiftly lashed out towards the injured inu Taiyoukai, but once again Sesshoumaru proved to be faster as he dodged the new assault.
Sesshoumaru barely glanced over in time to see one of Masanori’s flame engulfed daggers heading towards him. Swiftly, the Taiyoukai jumped out of the daggers’ path, instead of deflecting it with his sword.
It was no ordinary fire he was dealing with.
Anything that the flames touched, even just a little, would be controlled by the bear youkai and the flames were rumored to be hotter than Hell’s flames itself.
This was no time to find out if the rumors were really true.
As soon as the daggers’ blade tips touched the ground, the grass was immediately set ablaze in a massive line of fire that separated the pair of Taiyoukai.
Masanori smiled darkly as he watched the injured Taiyoukai below. Sesshoumaru had made a fatal mistake allowing the blades to touch the grass and now the inu youkai would discover what true pain would feel like while dying an agonizing death.
Kagome was going to be his now and Masanori couldn’t wait for this victory.
Gracefully, the bear youkai outstretched his clawed hand, as his eyes twinkled in delight at the fire that was growing larger and fiercer under his command.
He pointed his index finger and as he did, a long whip made entirely of bright red fire manifested from his clawed fingertip.
If Sesshoumaru thought he would be able to dodge the fire on the ground, then he was surely mistaken…
Masanori smirked deviously.
“Burn.”
~*~*~
Kagome gave an agonizing cry as she arched her back from the makeshift futon underneath her on the floor. The pain was far from unbearable and it was so excruciating that she found it hard to concentrate on anything.
Kagome didn’t even notice when Atsuko changed the warm, wet towel on her forehead for a much cooler one, nor did she pay attention to warm, comforting words the older hawk youkai were saying to her.
All Kagome could think about was the lingering question in her mind: why did she deserve this?
She was kind to everyone she met; she often stayed out of trouble whenever she could and she stayed pure in the hopes that someday her love, Inuyasha, would choose to be with her.
Kagome had never did anything wrong to deserve this kind of karma.
She was the one who was kidnapped and raped; now she had to be the one to suffer…suffer from something she didn’t want in the first place.
Granted, she will always love her children, no matter what circumstances they were born under, but still, Kagome had her whole life planned out.
Now she could never be with Inuyasha or have his children, or grow old with him and the rest of her friends…
Kagome gripped the sheets at her sides tightly as she cried out again from another wave of pain, but this time as the pain started to recede a little, the young miko exhaustedly fell back on the pillows behind her and began to sob uncontrollably at her predicament.
“…why me?” Kagome managed to choke out in between sobs, as hot tears started to stream down her cheeks.
Quietly, Atsuko knelt by her side and gently patted on the top of her Lady’s small balled fist.
“There, there, my Lady. Everything is going to be alright, you’ll see,” Atsuko said soothingly.
The older hawk youkai glanced over at her daughter and Naoki. They all exchanged worried looks and knew that the words Atsuko spoke were a lie.
Everything wasn’t going to be alright.
In the past hour, the young miko had started to pale and was growing weaker by the moment.
Even though the miko was completely unaware of her situation, the pups inside of her seemed to have sensed it and have gone in distress; unintentionally causing their mother more pain.
Luckily, Naoki was there to help soothe the pups with her aura, but every once in a while, the pups would go in distress again.
“It’s almost time,” Naoki informed as she lowered the raised sheet, to cover their Lady’s exposed lower half.
“How much longer does she have to go?” Sachiko asked with concern as knelt beside the old owl youkai.
“Very soon...she would most likely give birth within this hour,” Naoki said as she stared warily at the miko’s swollen belly.
Kagome groaned softly and sat up a little as a lighter wave of pain rushed through her petite body, before she settled back down on the pile of soft pillows behind her; resuming her silent crying as the female youkai in the room moved to soothe her.
“Do you think Katsutoshi found him yet?” Sachiko asked as her mother quietly before the older hawk youkai shook her; silently gesturing at their Lady’s fading mating mark.
Atsuko was scared and so was Naoki, but they had to keep pressing on.
When they had first saw the mark fading, neither of the women had any idea what to do, even now, they still had no idea what to do, because if Katsutoshi was unable to find and rescue their Lord in time, then the inevitable was going to happen to their Lady.
And from the look of things, the inevitable was currently taking place now and there was no use of lying to themselves about it.
Kagome was dying.
The smell of imminent death was in the air and with each wave of pain that came over the miko, she weakened drastically because of the stress of it on her tiny body.
Even if the twins were to survive the birth, without Kagome, they would still die because inuyoukai pups needed their birth mother to feed properly. They would not accept any milk from another, as it was against their nature; no matter how starved they’ve become.
It was one thing for a pup to lose its father, but it was a completely different story for a pup to lose its mother.
Suddenly, Kagome sat up as she began to scream in agony from another wave of pain, but this time the pain was different…it was even more prominent and sharper than before; accompanied with an odd sensation that she should bear down and push.
“I think they’re coming now!” Kagome hissed through clenched teeth.
~*~*~
“You can’t evade us for long, Sesshoumaru! Hell awaits your immediate arrival,” Masanori sneered as he lashed out his whip once again at the profusely bleeding Taiyoukai.
Sesshoumaru could feel himself slowing down from the combination of his and Kagome’s pain as he gracefully dodged another onslaught of tentacles and fire daggers.
It was increasingly becoming difficult because the flames were constantly closing in on him, while Naraku and Masanori continued their heavy assault.
Even if he were to die tonight, he needed to stay alive long enough for Kagome to give birth.
He wasn’t going to lose her this way, after all he had done to protect her; Sesshoumaru didn’t want to be the reason why she died, not if he could prevent it.
Kagome…just a while longer…
Angry red glowing eyes glared at the pair of opponents that stood before him as his sword began to spark with ice-blue lightning; a new feeling of determination washed over him despite his and his mate’s pain.
If he was going to Hell tonight, then he was dragging these two bastards with him.
There was no way that he was going to leave this world behind with his family while these two were still breathing.
Just then, Sesshoumaru felt Tokijin pulsate in his hand before the Tenseiga at his side pulsated in response.
Suddenly, the two swords’ blades glowed softly in a pure white glow as Sesshoumaru could feel the Tokijin unexpectedly surged with more power.
Tenseiga…
Was a sword so pure like Tenseiga trying to help a corrupt sword like Tokijin? Was because of the will to protect his family?
Masanori narrowed his dark green eyes from his position in another tree as he watched the two swords glow, before a red fiery sword manifested in one of his hands.
He felt the surge of power in the swords too, but he wouldn’t let Sesshoumaru have his chance to strike him with it.
It was time to end this tiresome battle.
Instantly, Masanori hopped down from his tree and landed next to Naraku, who was already prepared to strike again with his sharp tentacles.
As soon as the bear youkai landed on the grass, he began to charge towards the other Taiyoukai with his flaming sword.
Sesshoumaru stood silently as he watched Masanori rapidly head straight towards him. As soon as the bear youkai was in close range, Sesshoumaru feigned a slash towards Masanori, causing him to dodge in another direction.
Sesshoumaru inwardly smirked; knowing that was the direction that other youkai was going to move in.
With deadly precision, Sesshoumaru threw his electrified sword at the bear youkai just as he came within inches of him.
Suddenly, lightning struck across the darkened skies.
“You!” Masanori growled menacingly as he knelt to the ground, clutching at the slightly electrified, large hole in his chest.
Sesshoumaru glanced over and saw that his sword had also struck Naraku through his chest; piercing the evil hanyou through the heart in back and against the lower trunk of the tree.
It was just as he had planned.
He knew that once he had Masanori to move over just a little bit to the side, he would be lined up perfectly with Naraku’s body and then that would be the perfect time to strike them both.
But his own planned caused him to make a sacrifice, but it was just in time…
Despite his circumstances, Sesshoumaru felt relieved as he felt his mate’s pain begin to ebb; the heavy drops of rain slowly started to fall from the skies.
He could die in peace now.
Abruptly, Sesshoumaru knelt to the ground as Masanori pulled his flaming sword from the inuyoukai’s abdomen and as he did, Masanori and Naraku were engulfed in bright, electrified light before the whole forest around them engulfed in the bear youkai’s flames; consuming all of their bodies.
Even though the massive, out of control fire was consuming everything in sight, Tenseiga began to emit a much larger and brighter glow at its dead master’s side.
~*~*~
Kagome smiled weakly as she fell back onto the pillows in relief; closing her eyes to listen to the two strong and healthy cries of her newborn babies.
Her healthy sons, she reminded herself with another small smile.
Kagome didn’t have a chance to see them well, but she caught glimpses of them as Naoki and Sachiko helped pull them out. One had a head of pretty, curly dark hair and the other…
White hair…?
The other seemed to have nagged at her for the longest, but Kagome was too exhausted to know why.
The servants were busy trying to clean them off, so that they could present them to her properly, but while Kagome was waiting, she decided to close her eyes to get a little rest.
At first, she focused on the sounds of the women gushing over the two little bundles of joy as they were cleaning them off with warm water, but it seemed as though the more she focused, the further away they’ve sounded.
Perhaps, it was sleep beckoning her to join it and as much as Kagome wanted to hold her precious sons in her arms right now, sleep was calling for her and she could no longer ignore it.
“…I’m so…glad…” Kagome whispered tiredly as she drew her last breath; a lone tear of joy managed to roll down her porcelain cheek.
Instantly, Sachiko broke away from the small group and frantically ran over to the cold, pale miko on the futon and knelt beside her on the floor; shaking the now dead young woman’s small shoulders in an effort to wake her up.
“My Lady! My Lady! Please, please wake up! Don’t fall asleep, please! ” Sachiko shrieked frantically as tears started to form in her eyes; the sounds of the twins crying were no longer loud in the young youkai’s ears.
It was only a moment…only a moment that they were away from their Lady.
She had done well during the birth that they were positive that she was going to live after it, as long as they kept a constant watch on her and gave her medicine to ease her pain.
Sachiko’s chest filled with dread as she watched her Lady’s head lifelessly slumped over to the side; her long, dark curls cascaded around her peacefully sleeping face as the scent of death permeated throughout the room.
Slowly and numbly, Sachiko reluctantly laid the young miko back down on the soft futon.
They had failed, despite the fact that Kagome had survived the birthing.
Now, the twins were going to die too.
Without their mother how were they supposed to survive? How long could they survive?
A few days, a couple of weeks?
Now that their mother was dead, along with their father, their days were surely numbered.
Sachiko had hoped that one day, she and Kagome could become good friends with each other. There was so much that Sachiko had looked forward to by working for the young miko, but now…
“My Lady…” Sachiko whispered apologetically as she quietly pulled the white sheet that was covering her during the birthing over the miko’s head.
At least now, she was in a much happier place.
~*~*~
The crickets were chirping loudly along with a few remaining cicadas under the brightly lit summer moon and it signaled to the world that it was night time, once again.
In the quiet, large empty room a sleepy moan could be heard as the room’s lone inhabitant shifted underneath a pile of heavy, yet comfortable covers.
But eventually, those covers were getting a little too warm during the hot, summer night.
A pair of eyebrows knitted together out of frustration as the covers were rapidly becoming too warm to sleep under.
Kagome tossed once again in her futon, before she registered the fact that it was still night time and that there was a sharp pain in the lower half of her body.
Immediately, Kagome’s eyes snapped open as she realized that she just given birth.
Sons, she recalled as she stared up at the ceiling.
But then she fell asleep for a moment…or was it really a moment?
Kagome began to wonder why the room was so silent and before she could begin to figure out why, she heard a soft cooing sound in front of her.
Instinctively and with a small smile, Kagome slowly sat up; ignoring the sharp pain coming from her protesting body.
Although she was expecting her babies to be around, what she did not expect was that there was someone else in the room with her.
Kagome’s heart sank down into her stomach and the smile on her face quickly disappeared as she looked at the scene in front of her; trying to register what was going on.
At first, Kagome thought she was in a bad dream or that someone was pulling a bad prank on her, but then everything slowly started to make sense.
White.
The color white was constantly nagging at her and now she knew why.
The thought had crossed her mind once, but she still would have never thought he was the one who did this to her.
He hated humans, so taking a human mate was beyond out of the question.
Yet, there he was.
Sitting across from her regally in front of the slightly opened courtyard’s shoji doors, was the last man on earth that she thought would be cradling her two sons in his own arms.
Silently, startled and confused blue-grey eyes met with a warm, loving gaze of a pair of golden orbs.
“No…” Kagome breathed.
