Kagome and InuYasha headed down the shrine steps to find a car waiting for them. She briefly wondered why Sesshomaru would have given her the directions, but in the end she decided it was probably so that they would know they were being taken to the correct location, or so that she could let her family know where she was going to be.
She climbed in first, and InuYasha slipped in behind her. As they drove through the city she tried her hardest not to think about what awaited them. There was a part of her that wanted them to have found Naraku so that they could finish him off once and for all, but another part was terrified of the possibility that something might happen to InuYasha, that she might lose him.
He slipped his hand into hers and she knew that he had likely sensed some of her emotions. She offered him a smile though she was fairly certain that he saw right through it. What little fear he was feeling was far eclipsed by his eagerness for battle and a steady confidence that she was almost jealous of.
The made their way through the city and eventually stopped at what looked like a cargo terminal at the Port of Tokyo. The whole area was empty and she wondered just what connections Sesshomaru had to have a place that was usually filled with workers completely empty.
As soon as she stepped out of the car she knew that Naraku had been in this place. She rubbed her upper arms with her hands as her skin started to crawl. She would never mistake the feeling that the evil hanyou’s youki.
“Well, that bastard’s stench is everywhere so he’s definitely been here before,” InuYasha said.
Kagome nodded. “I can’t sense him here now, but there is enough of his residual energy that I think he has spent a lot of time here.”
“Keh, this way,” InuYasha told her as he headed for one of the buildings. “Sesshomaru wants us to hurry up.”
They walked over to a large warehouse type building which had been marked as unsafe and had been closed until it could be brought up to standards. InuYasha opened the door for her and her stomach turned as the foul air inside rushed outwards. As they stepped inside she immediately covered her nose with her hand and took shallow breaths.
“Oh, Gods, how can the two of you stand it?” she asked between shallow breaths. “I think I’m going to be sick. What is it?”
InuYasha pulled her against him, and she pressed her face to his chest. “Death.”
“Perhaps she should wait outside,” Sesshomaru said.
Kagome shook her head. She reached up and pulled off the bandana InuYasha had used to cover his ears. She tied it around her neck and then pulled it up over her nose and mouth. It didn’t block out the putrid stench entirely but it was enough to make it bearable.
“I can do this,” she told them.
She turned towards the door and then reached out flipped on what she hoped was the light switch. As it would turn out most of the overhead lights were broken but a few flickered to life here and there giving her enough light to see that it would have been better not to have turned them on at all. She had a terrible feeling that the nearly black stains on the floor and the sticky looking puddles hadn’t been caused by a spilled container or something equally as innocuous.
“I will take the right,” Sesshomaru told them.
InuYasha nodded. “We’ll go left. Kagome stay close and stay behind me.”
He didn’t draw his sword but his hand hovered near his hip as they headed down the left side of the building, looking between the rows of shelves. Kagome tried to ignore the squelching sound under her feet as she walked and the way her shoes tried to stick to the floor. She glanced down and shuddered as she realized that InuYasha was walking through this nightmare in bare feet.
The further back they went the thicker the layer of blood became and soon after it wasn’t just blood anymore. Kagome swallowed back the urge to vomit as carefully stepped around chunks of something she knew that she was better off not trying to identify. InuYasha was growling quietly and she knew that he must be able to tell better than she could exactly what horror had gone on here.
She stumbled into him and fisted her hands in the back of his fire rat to catch herself. She looked back and realized that what she had tripped over had been a leg, from the knee down. She bit down on her lip to keep from screaming. What could the purpose of this slaughter have possibly been? She released him as she regained her balance.
InuYasha turned and put his hands on her shoulders. “You okay?”
She forced herself to nod. “I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful.”
He took her hands and frowned as he noticed the way they trembled. He wrapped his arms around her. “We’re going to get this bastard, Kagome.”
She nodded against him. “We have to keep going.”
He gave her one more tight squeeze and then released her and they resumed their exploration of the warehouse. This time she made sure to watch where she was stepping. She shivered and rubbed her hands along her arms as the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. It was almost as though she could feel what had happened here and she wondered if the spirits of those who had been so viciously murdered might not be lingering nearby.
She stopped dead as they reached an open area at the very back of the building. Her head shook of its own accord as her mind refused to process what she was seeing. Twin growls reverberated through her in stereo as both InuYasha and Sesshomaru expressed their feelings about what was before them.
Unconsciously she stepped closer to her hanyou as Sesshomaru’s youki flared out from his body, seeking the comfort and protection of InuYasha even as his did the same. They were both as furious as she had ever felt and the pressure of their combined fury was making her claustrophobic. She was unaware as her own aura blossomed around her, fighting back the pressure.
Her heart ached and tears rolled down her cheeks as the warmth and light of her reiki revealed to her the souls Naraku had somehow bound here in an invisible web. She felt InuYasha grab her hand as she stepped forward, intent on freeing them, letting her instinct guide her.
“Kagome?” he said quietly.
She looked back. “I have to help them. They’re trapped here and can’t move on.”
“Kagome, what are you talking about?” InuYasha asked. “I don’t see anything.”
She gently pulled her hand from his and reached out, placing a single finger on one of the strands of the web. Her power flowed out of her and she watched as the web dissolved. Beside her InuYasha let out a long breath as white light swirled around her before disappearing into the air above her. She couldn’t go back and return their lives to them but at least she had been able to give them a chance to be born again.
She turned her back on the carnage laid out before them and said a quiet prayer for the youkai and humans who had been so senselessly murdered by Naraku and then put on display and she vowed to make sure that he paid for what he had done.
“InuYasha, take her out of here and wait for me outside,” Sesshomaru said. “I will make arrangements to have this disgrace taken care of and the bodies properly buried.”
Kagome didn’t protest as InuYasha swept her up into his arms. He would be able to get them outside much and faster and right now even he couldn't be fast enough for her. She couldn't even begin to imagine why Naraku would do such a thing. Yes, he was evil and wanted the jewel but what had been done here was just profane. There could be no purpose for such desecration. InuYasha reached for the door to open it and she stopped him.
“Your ears,” she said.
“Who’s gonna see them?” he asked. “Sesshomaru had this place cleared out and his people are either youkai or know what we are.”
“Even still, someone might have shown up while we were inside,” she replied as she untied the bandanna and tried to hold her breath.
He snorted but set her on her feet and quickly tied the covering over his ears before opening the door and letting her out. The scent of blood and death followed them and he found himself looking forward, for once, to the prospect of a bath and washing away the lingering odor of what was inside that building.
Kagome was relieved to be out in the open air again even if the stench from inside lingered on her clothing and in her hair. She looked down at her shoes and doubted that it would be possible to get them truly clean ever again. The door opened and she looked up just in time to see Sesshomaru step outside. As usual his expression was inscrutable, but she could feel the unrest in his youki and knew he wanted to find and kill Naraku as much as she and InuYasha did.
“We should return to my home to discuss our next move,” Sesshomaru said.
“We have to stop by the shrine first,” InuYahsa told him. “I ain’t going anywhere until I’ve washed the stink of that place off me.”
“I left it unspoken that a room would be made available as well as a change of clothes,” Sesshomaru said. “What you are wearing can be laundered while we discuss the situation before us.”
InuYasha frowned at Kagome who was staring off into the distance. She had closed herself off from him. He touched her shoulder gently to get her attention. “Oi, that work for you?”
She blinked and seemed confused for a second but then nodded. “I probably shouldn’t go home like this anyway.”
InuYasha watched Kagome for almost the entire ride, and he wondered if she even realized that she was shutting him out. He didn’t have to feel her to know that she was shaken up by what they had seen in that building. It was a natural response to that kind of butchery, especially for someone as tenderhearted as Kagome. It had been unnerving even for him and he had seen far more than his fair share of blood and death.
When they reached Sesshomaru’s house InuYasha was surprised to find that someone had set a bowl of warm water just outside the door, along with a towel. It didn’t take him more than a second to realize that it was there for him to get the dried blood off his feet before going inside. While he did that Kagome took off her shoes and socks and to his amusement his brother did the same. It was strange seeing Sesshomaru doing something so mundane, so normal.
They went inside and were shown to a large bedroom with a connected bath. Just like the rest of the house that he had seen it was sparsely decorated and aside from the wooden floors everything else seemed to be in varying shades of white. It was all very cold and clean. It definitely suited his brother perfectly. Laid out on the bed were a pair of yukata.
He placed a gentle hand on Kagome’s back and ushered her towards the bathroom. He closed the door quietly behind them. She went over to the shower and turned on the water, letting it run over hand and adjusting it until she was satisfied with the temperature. He hoped it wouldn’t be too hot, but already resigned himself to not saying anything even if it was.
He reached out for her as she turned taking her face in his hands and kissing her softly. Once he was momentarily satisfied he began to remove her clothing. She stepped out of them and into the shower. Something was definitely bothering her. He quickly removed his own clothes and then gathered both his and hers up and set them outside the bathroom door. When he returned she was standing under the water, but he could tell by set of her shoulders and the trembling of her hands that she was crying. He brushed his hands down her arms and she turned.
She wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed herself against him. She looked up at him. “InuYasha.”
He hated how sad she sounded, how lost and he wasn’t sure what he could do to comfort her. “It’s going to be okay, Kagome.”
“Why would he do that?” she asked. “And then to keep their souls trapped, never able to move on, to be reborn. It’s too horrible to even think about.”
“He’s an evil bastard, Kagome,” InuYasha told her and he held her close. “He’s always been an evil bastard, but we are going to find him and kill him so he can’t hurt anyone else.”
She closed her eyes pressed her face to his chest. “It feels like it’s all my fault. If I had only I had been stronger or less worried about school, maybe we would have completed the jewel sooner or killed him in the past and then he wouldn’t be here now killing innocent people.”
He cupped her cheeks in his palms. “Shit, is that what you’re hiding from me, that you feel like this is your fault?”
She bit her lower lip and a fresh round of tears filled her eyes. “If I let you feel it then maybe you would start to realize that it is my fault, and maybe then you’d feel like you had to leave, to go back through the well and clean up another mess that I made because I was too stupid and too weak to do it myself.”
“Idiot,” he said gently as he crushed her against him. “This is not your fault. It’s not your fault, Kagome, any more than it is mine or Kikyou’s for what was between us making him jealous enough to turn himself into an abomination, or Midoriko’s for making the jewel in the first place. And I told you before; you’re stuck with me now.”
She laughed a little through her tears. “Not stuck.”
“Now, quit hiding from me,” he told her. “We’re in this together. For the good and the bad, and I fucking hate it when I can’t feel you.”
She finally let go and was swept up in the torrent of emotions that flowed into him through their bond. She gasped as he pushed her back up against the wall and pulled one of her legs up over his hip. He kissed her trying to push all of her doubts and fears out of her with the certain and sure force of his love for her.
Her arms wrapped around his neck, hands tangling in his hair as she kissed him desperately. She cried out as he lifted her from her feet and he slipped inside her. He nibbled at her neck as he thrust rapidly, her back sliding against the wall as she slid up and down on his cock. She felt incredible wrapped around him just as she always did and he vowed to never take the gift of her love for granted.
“Harder, faster,” she breathed as she let go of him and pressed her palms against the shower wall, trusting completely that he wouldn’t let her fall.
He growled and gave her exactly what she wanted. Suddenly she tightened around him and cried out his name in release and he joined her with a groan. She giggled as his breath tickled her neck and he knew that they would be okay, she would be okay. She was too strong not to be. He let go of her legs and they slipped down to the floor.
He watched her as she put some soap in her hands. She turned to him and began to spread the lather all over his body. She ran her hands across his abdomen and then circled his dick. He grabbed her hands and held them.
“Careful or we’ll never get out of this shower,” he told her. “Not that I would mind, but Sesshomaru is only gonna wait so long.”
She laughed again and the sound warmed his heart. “I suppose you’re right.”
He turned and after she washed his back and hair, he did the same for her and then they got out. InuYasha noticed that their clothes were gone as they left the bathroom. They went over to the bed and got dressed. He put on the juban and then the dark blue yukata and obi with ease. He felt a little weird swinging free as it were, but it wasn’t that big a difference.
He turned to Kagome who had on her juban and yukata but was struggling to wrap the obi around herself. He snorted and moved her hands out of the way.
“Mama, always helped me before, and I haven’t gotten to wear anything like this in years,” she said quietly.
He frowned and realized that it was his fault that she had missed out on any occasion where she might have worn something traditional. He sure as hell wouldn’t have let her come back for festivals and he had even caused her to miss the New Year with her family. He wrapped it around her and tied the bow, positioning it carefully.
“I used to help my mother,” he told her. “And I’m sorry that I made you miss out on so much here.”
“The jewel and Naraku were more important,” she said.
He shook his head. “You were more important. It wasn’t long before I tried to keep you from leaving for myself, because I missed you too much when you were gone. It didn’t have fuck all to do with Naraku or the jewel.”
She smiled and hugged him until someone knocked on the door. She stepped back and he went over to see who it was. The woman, a youkai, bowed politely and requested they follow her to where Sesshomaru was waiting for them. They followed her through the house until they reached Sesshomaru’s office. The door was open so they didn’t knock before stepping inside. He motioned for them to sit down while he finished his call.
Kagome could tell by the small line that appeared between his brows that whatever the person on the phone was telling him was not something he wanted to hear. He ended the call and set the cell phone down on his desk with what was almost a sigh.
“Do I even want to ask?” InuYasha said.
“It would seem that Naraku left a message on the wall behind his… display,” Sesshomaru replied. “My people discovered it as they recovered the bodies.”
“Why do I get the feeling I’m not going to like what you say next,” InuYasha said.
“It seems he will not be satisfied with only the jewel,” Sesshomaru told them. “He wants her and the jewel and he will continue leaving these ‘gifts’ for her around the city until he gets them. He will also redouble his efforts to take the jewel from her. If she goes to him and volunteers to become the other miko again and agrees to sever her connection to you then he will not kill anyone else.”
“Sever our connection,” Kagome said quietly.
“He wishes InuYasha to bear witness to the act as well,” Sesshomaru said.
“Wait a fucking minute,” InuYasha said with a snarl. “That’s going to happen over my dead body. I don’t give a fuck what he wants. He isn’t getting Kagome and he sure as hell isn’t going to put his filthy hands on her.”
“Three days from now she either meets him in the gym of her old high school or he will leave a scene worse than the one at the port,” Sesshomaru finished.
“I’m going to be sick,” Kagome said diving for the small waste basket beside the desk.
InuYasha went to his knees beside her and held back her hair as she retched into the trash can. He didn’t blame her for being ill. Just thinking about that monster touching her was enough to make his stomach turn and on top of that he could feel all of her emotions. She was scared and sad and full of guilt which he expected, but somewhere around the edges he felt something from her that filled him with dread. Some part of her was resigned and it infuriated him.
“Don’t you even think about it,” he told her. “You are not giving yourself to him.”
She wiped her mouth on the back of her hand and looked at him. “If I don’t who knows how many people he’ll kill.”
“I don’t give a fuck if he kills a hundred people, a thousand, you aren’t doing it,” he said. “We’ll figure something else out.” He grabbed her and pulled her against him. “You promised to always stay by my side.”
“InuYasha is right,” Sesshomaru said. “You cannot give him what he wants. We have three days to plan, to prepare ourselves and he will not live to regret his miserable existence.”
