Rin watched as Morgan packed her things in a small bag. The few dresses she had brought with her when she had first arrived at the castle were neatly folded on a bench, waiting as Morgan forced her bone tooth comb and shoes at the bottom of the pack before reaching for the first dress. She was wearing her strange hakama and short kimono instead of one of the kimonos that Lord Sesshoumaru had made for her and by the look of things, they were going to remain in the cabinet that the servant had put them in, ignored and eventually forgotten.
Rin didn’t know what had happened between her lord and her friend but she knew that it was more serious than their usual arguments. Whatever had happened had left Morgan depressed and withdrawn and even Sesshoumaru was acting different. He still remained as static as ever but Rin would notice him watching Morgan with guilt and pain in his eyes. Something had to have happened at the party. That was the only thing that Rin could think off. They had acted normally then but something had been off. Morgan hadn’t been as aggressive and Sesshoumaru had seemed more intone to the redhead’s needs. But any gift or action of comfort was always rebuffed and Morgan had spent most of her time with Rin and if given the option, would refuse to be by Sesshoumaru’s side.
Rin never voiced her worries though. As young and as headstrong as she was, she known that this was one thing she couldn’t fix and if she tried, she would only cause more problems. Still, she was worried and wanting to help and knowing she couldn’t was angering her. She may not known what had happened but she did know who was to blame and she was doing whatever she could not to yell at him.
Morgan finished backing her things, her eyes down cast as she closed the bag. Her movements were slow and hesitant, as if waiting for someone to stop her. Rin watched as Morgan clenched the flap hard enough for her knuckles to turn white before releasing the fabric and picking up the strap.
“You forgot the kimonos,” Rin flinched at how desperate her voice seemed but watching Morgan toss the bag over her shoulder had been the breaking point. She knew that Sesshoumaru and Morgan had a fight but now she knew that Morgan wasn’t coming back and her heart began to beat in panic.
Morgan paused, her shoulder still in the motion of adjusting the light but awkward object and she met Rin’s eyes. Rin swallowed hard. Morgan may be putting up a strong front but her eyes were full of pain, sorrow, and unshed tears.
“Such fine things are not meant for the life I live,” Morgan explained with a small, forced smile. “You should be able to fit into them before long. They’re yours now.”
Rin felt her own eyes fill with tears but unlike Morgan, she let them fall and ran into the older woman’s arms. Morgan braced herself for the impacted and folded the girl into her arms.
“I can still come visit, can’t I?” Rin begged into her shoulder.
She felt Morgan nodded.
“Of course, you’re always welcome, never forget that.”
“I won’t.”
Without another word, Morgan stepped away from Rin and made her way out of the room, leaving the girl to deal with her own grief. Her heart tightened at the sound of the girl’s sobs but there was comfort in knowing that she would see her again and that Rin cared for her enough to show it, unlike someone else.
Her steps where slow as she made her way through the castle. She gave no acknowledgement to the servants that crossed her path and Jaken’s farewell received nothing more than a nod. The aching in her heart got worse the closer she made it to the door and when she stepped into the evening sun, the tears she fought so hard to hold back began to fall over her cheeks.
She paused at the entryway and breathed in the evening hair. The air was moist with the previous rain that she had missed. It was suppose to be the last of the season but she wished that it had delayed. The weather should be gloomy, a downpour of restless energy. It would suit her mood.
Morgan tightened her grip on the strap of her bag and stepped out into the garden. Her ears strained to hear everything around her but she knew that her search was in vain. She couldn’t even smell him. Sesshoumaru had left, never saying goodbye. She had at least hoped for that. Choking on a sob, Morgan made her way to the gate, her feet getting heavier with each step and her body shaking with grief. It seemed to take her forever to reach the gate but when she managed to reach the edge of the forest, the sun had not lowered much more. She wished it would sink into the earth and cast the world in darkness so no one could see her pain but feel it in the mournful silence of night. At the edge of the tree line, she paused and looked back at the castle. Most of it was cast in shadows but the light still gave it a welcoming look.
Morgan bit her lip hard enough to draw blood and looked at her feet. There was no use in denying it now. He wasn’t going to stop her. He had decided to disappear instead. Chocking back a sob, Morgan began making her way to the trees, returning to the world she was familiar with. Her steps became faster now as she made her way down the path Rin’s many visits had created. No longer wishing for Sesshoumaru, she longed for home. She wanted to bury herself in the arms of her sister and aunt and listen to the soothing voice of her father. She wanted her brother to joke like everything was okay. She needed her family. Her steps became a trot but when she came within smelling distance of the pack, she dropped her pack and ran. There was a new scent among the pack but it was very familiar.
Crying in both pain and relief, Morgan broke into the clearing, scaring some of the pups that were playing nearby. The figure she aimed for had barely managed to rise to her feet before Morgan dived into her arms and began sobbing her broken heart out.
Briana didn’t hesitate, but held her sister close, trying to sooth her with the gentle rumble deep in her throat that had always worked when Morgan was little and telling her everything was fine. Briana may have thought it was her sudden arrival that had brought out this storm of emotion from Morgan, but when Morgan only held tighter and cried harder, she knew it was about something completely different and began to look at her father for help.
All of the pack was confused and stayed their distance because of it but Kallan quickly went over to his daughters and pried his youngest from his oldest. In turn, she clung to him. Holding her tightly, he sat down with her in his lap and rocked her as if she was a pup again and begged to know what was wrong. It took a few minutes of begging but after Morgan calmed enough, she told them what happened. It seemed to ease the burden enough for Morgan to calm completely and leave her drain. She continued to cry into her father’s shoulder but without the choking sobs that forced her entire body to shake.
Holding his baby to him, Kallan looked to his eldest, expecting to have to restrain her from going to do bodily harm to the lord while still comforting Morgan and was surprised to see that Briana was showing restraint. Her jaw was locked in anger and her eyes glowed with her temper but her breathing was deep in an effort to calm herself. Sensing his eyes, Briana looked at him then took an even deeper breath, her body relaxing as her rage was released.
Kallan was thankful and focused his attention back on the woman in his arms.
“Shh,” he soothed. “Don’t cry.”
“He didn’t even stop me, Da.” She cried into his shoulder.
“That only makes him a fool.” He replied and motioned for Katherine and Ena and they quickly went to help. Katherine moved the baby sling onto her back and with Ena’s help; they lifted Morgan to her feet. She leaned heavily on them but allowed them to lead her to the cave. Alban quickly followed, taking the pup from Katherine’s sling and taking the role of babysitter since his father was out with the hunting party.
With Morgan taking care of, Kallan rose to his feet and faced his eldest.
“Briana?”
“I want to rip his throat out, Da” she growled, her anger returning with a vengeance.
“That won’t help anything. It would only make things worse.”
Briana sighed again and lowered her eyes. “I know.” And she did know. Just as she knew that her father’s concern was justified. It wasn’t long ago that Briana would have submitted to her anger and would have killed the lord for making her sister hurt so much. She would even have been enraged at being under the rule of a noble, who she hated almost as much as humans, and would have tried to get the leaders to overthrow him and claim the lands for themselves. But war has a way of making one change, she thought as she looked at the few others that had accompanied her throughout the war. They were sitting apart from the pack, not yet fully welcomed, since they were all unfamiliar faces, and they themselves not yet accepting of the change. Briana was their leader and now she was falling down in rank by submitting to her father and uncle’s dominance. It was better off this way, she knew that now. Kallan and his brother’s wouldn’t lead them to their deaths as she had done.
Briana crossed her arms to keep from fingering the scar the ruined her face and kicked at a rock just hard enough to loosen it from the soil. There were pups around after all and she didn’t need to harm them with propelled objects, though she doubt it would be long before she started throwing things at her brother. She had only been back a few days and already he was starting to annoy her. Briana cracked a smile. She loved him more for that.
“I’m still pissed, though,” Briana admitted before looking at her father. “Something needs to be done.”
Kallan shook his head and sat back on the log, absently thinking he should get those with too much energy to turn it into a suitable bench before responding. “It is best not to get involve in other people’s relationships. It only causes more problems.”
“She’s my sister. I should do something.”
“Morgan is a grown woman now. She should handle this on her own. Once she calms down and starts thinking things clearly, she’ll know what needs to be done.”
Wanting to argue but knowing her father was right, she bit her lip and nodded. Kallan smiled in victory but hid it from his daughter as he slapped his hands down on the log and stood.
“Now tell me, how good are those friends of yours at carving?”
Morgan curled on her blankets, staring blankly at the half empty cup of tea in her hands. With Ena’s coaxing, she had drunk it and it had calmed her nerves but now she felt this vague emptiness and all she wanted to do was sleep. Ena was sitting by her head, stroking her hair while Katherine sat beside her, her hand on her calf and her fingers moving in comforting motions. Morgan absently remembered them doing this when she was very small and had gotten sick, not common for demons but not impossible. They had stayed with her until her fever broke while Briana and Alban went back and forth with water and broth. Briana could never sit still when any of her family was hurting. Knowing that made her wonder what Briana was going to do now that she knew what had hurt her but pushed it aside as she rolled over and put her head in Ena’s lap and closed her eyes.
It felt good being cared for but she hated herself for being weak. She wondered if that was one of the things that Sesshoumaru had hated about her. She never could hide her emotions, choosing instead to be an open book and voice them if there was any confusion. It could be a weakness. She had seen that when she was at the party. Even the two tigers had kept calm expressions when conversing with the other lords. It was only to Sesshoumaru and her that they showed anything.
Morgan’s gripped Ena’s skirt. Still, the other lords seemed to have liked her. Lord Kaemon had complemented her before their departure, saying that Sesshoumaru was wise in choosing her while his son had even kissed her cheek before wising her good luck and congratulations. Even Michio had offered his apologizes, stating she was worthy of any lord. He may have been talking about her abilities but he had also said that he hoped he hadn’t caused any problems between her and Sesshoumaru. Another tear escaped her tightly closed eyes and dropped onto her hand. They liked her, why couldn’t Sesshoumaru.
Morgan sensed movement behind her and felt the tiny foot of Katherine’s pup kick her in the knee when placed into his mother’s lap before she felt Alban lay down next to her and wrap an arm around her shoulder.
“It’ll be alright, Morgan. Just wait and see.”
For some reason, that comforted her more than her sisters, father, and aunt. Everything wasn’t okay now and she doubted it would be for awhile but she had her family and at the moment, that was all she needed. Sighing, the last of the tension left her body and she fell asleep in her aunt’s lap, feeling hurt but protected.

The moment she heard that he had returned home, Rin went on a hunt. She didn’t care if he wanted to be alone or if she would end up in boiling water but something had to be said. She had seen Morgan look back at the castle and though she hadn’t seen her face, she knew what Morgan was looking for and he had decided to stay away until she left.
Rin stormed down the hallways, pushing any servant that got out of her way, barely noticing how for the first time, they looked at her in fear and how most quickly moved before she reached them. Her fists were clenched at her side and few times she had to stretch out her fingers when they began to ache. So far, she had searched the study, the library, the dojo, the garden, and the kitchen. There was only on thing left to search and she was even angrier when realizing this. Anywhere else at least meant he was feeling something but only being in his room meant nothing. He always went to the other rooms when he was feeling so sort of emotional distress but he only went to his room when he was tired, nothing more.
Growling under her breath, she barely noticed Jaken come around the corner that lead to Sesshoumaru’s room and almost ran over him as she moved past. Seeing her intent, Jaken squawked in panic and ran to stop her.
“Rin! What are you doing?” he yelled as he tried to move in front of her but the young woman’s legs were much longer now and could easily out distance him. “The master doesn’t wish to be disturbed.”
“I don’t give a fuck what he wants,” Rin growled back. “It’s time he starts thinking about other people instead of just himself.”
Before Jaken could move in her way, Rin made it to Lord Sesshoumaru’s room and threw open the screen without announcement.
Sesshoumaru was starting to get undress when Rin made her appearance and he looked over his bare shoulder, his hands pausing from removing his hoari. He narrowed his eyes when he saw her and refastened the garment.
“I told you a few years back that you were forbidden from entering this room without knocking,” he reminded her as he turned to face her.
Rin ignored him and stepped into the room.
“What were you thinking?” She yelled at him. “How could you let her go?”
Sesshoumaru’s eyes narrowed even more, forming dangerous slits and his shoulders squared in preparation for the on coming battle.
“That is none of your business, Rin.”
“I’m making it my business. I’ve kept quite on the flight home and even while she packed but I can’t any more.”
“Rin-“
“You didn’t see her leave,” she pointed accusingly at him. “You didn’t see the tears in her eyes.”
“Rin!”
Rin stepped back from the hostility in his voice and lowered her hand but kept herself from lowering her eyes like she normally would.
“I am only going to tell you once, leave my room and keep out of my business.”
Pain replaced the anger in a heartbeat and tears filled Rin’s eyes as she stared up at him. She held them back as she slowly backed away, staring at him the entire time with accusing eyes.
“You’re wrong about this,” was the last thing she said before disappearing down the hall, leaving a worried Jaken to tend to the screen. The loyal servant kept his head respectfully low but was shaking in fear from the wrath of both the youkai and the human child as he slid the screen closed and quickly left.
Sesshoumaru stared at the door, not sure about what to feel but knowing what the girl said was true. Backing against the wall, Sesshoumaru slid to the floor and closed his eyes, trying to fight the rise of emotion inside him. Rin was right. He had been wrong in letting Morgan go. He should have tried harder to make her see that he did care for her and he should have kept her from leaving. She would have stayed if he did. He hadn’t thought that such a simple action would correct the mistakes he had made and he had made plenty of them and he had no idea on how to make them right. For the first time since he could remember, Sesshoumaru, Lord of the Western Lands was at a lost on what to do.
