Of course, she was worried for her friend, but there was no law against a girl trying to get lucky was there? She frowned at her reflection, deciding against the hoop earrings. Pearls. Yes they would do nicely. Look more elegant, more refined. Odd that she had to worry about such things. Lilian could look elegant in jeans and a t-shirt. There was something about her, some inner confidence that radiated from her. Esbet had always chalked it up to the fact that Lilian had been in the military and seen some terrible things. She’d learned to live under fire and move through it with grace. One of the things Esbet had always envied. Lilian cried as if her heart was breaking. Just when she thought nothing could get any more complicated, it did. Her hands were fisted in the silk covering Sesshoumaru’s broad chest. “I…I’m sorry” she whispered into his warmth. His clawed hand stroked over her hair soothingly and he began to growl. The soft growl used for fretful pups. She pressed closer, feeling the world falling away and he was all that remained. Floating above the chaos, rising above the rubble of her psyche. “Why do you apologize?” he asked in a soft voice. She sniffed loudly, “Because I am not as strong as I should be” she wailed, “And I’m confused and afraid……and I’m ruining your shirt”. “You are only human, and you are facing inhuman odds. Fear is natural, as is doubt. You must move past them, move through them, or they will conquer you. Devour you”. His words filled her with so many conflicting feelings. “I saw her” she admitted in a nearly inaudible voice, “The previous Mekharat”. Sesshoumaru sighed, “It was inevitable. It will become more difficult for you now”. She blinked, and pulled back to meet his gaze, “What?” she asked. Hooking his thumb in the edge of his flowing sleeve, he gently wiped away the tears that clung to her lashes and coursed down her cheeks. “The visions of the Mekharat” he replied, “In time, without your powers, they will drive you mad”. Lilian looked stricken. Mad? She’d go mad? Well wasn’t that just peachy? “Great” she replied sarcastically, ‘Just what I need’. Sesshoumaru curled his finger under her chin, lifting her face back to his. “I will not allow that to happen” he told her. Violet eyes went wide, “How can you stop that?” she asked, “Why do I have to do this?”. “Because you are the Mekharat” he growled out, “This is your fate, your destiny, daunting as it may be. We cannot do this for you, but we will stand beside you”. Lilian studied his face through her tears, lifting her hand slowly, half afraid that he might bite it off. She laid trembling fingers against the pale perfection of his cheek. Something in his eyes, something in his voice eased her. Oh, she’d be upset about this later, but somehow, at this moment, it seemed ok to let him shoulder the weight of her uncertain fate. “You are not what you seem” she whispered to him, and his brow arched slightly, “Youkai never are” he replied. He rose to his feet taking her with him, “Come then”. She curled her hands at his nape, “Where are we going?” she asked him. A strange lethargy was sweeping over her. He smirked, knowing his youki was lulling her. “Bed” he told her simply, “You need to rest”. She wanted to protest, “But….”. He shifted her closer to him, and she pressed her face against the base of his throat, feeling that fuzzy, warm blackness rise up to claim her. “All is well Mekharat”. She was out like a light a moment later, her grip on him slackening only slightly. Youko came around the corner, catching sight of them. “How is she?” he asked. Sesshoumaru moved to match his pace in the corridor, “The visions will take a toll. As they always do” he replied quietly. Youko glanced over to see the lingering wetness of her tears against her cheek. Reaching out with a clawed finger, he wiped it away. “She understands that her powers will help ease them?” he asked. Sesshoumaru shrugged, “It was mentioned, briefly”. Youko nodded, “Things are progressing quickly for her” he pointed out, “The previous Mekharat had half a year of training before the visions came to her”. Sesshouamaru had considered that. It was true, and could only mean one thing. Lilian would likely be the last Mekharat. This would be a war to end it all. Shiziru was not well. That much was clear. Inuyasha didn’t need his nose to see it. Her flesh was sallow looking and her eyes unclear. The scent of illness wafted off her, stinging his nose. This was not a natural illness, of that he was certain. Kagome had settled the old woman in a guest chamber, and was currently tucking the blanket around her. “You have a fever” Kagome scolded her, “You need to rest”. Shiziru waved her away but Kagome merely turned and picked up a bowl of steaming soup from the bedside table. “You are going to eat all of this and then we’ll talk”. She was just sitting down in the bedside chair when the door opened, “Kagome, why don’t you take a break?” Inuyasha asked, “I can feed the old bat”. “Inuyasha!” Kagome snapped, “That wasn’t very nice. Apologize!”. He grunted, “I made my apologies already” he grumbled, taking the deep bowl from his wife’s hands. “I ran a bath for you”. Her face brightened, “Really? You are so good to me” . He ‘keh’d’ and sat down in the chair. He waited until Kagome had moved down the hallway, to scoop up a spoon full of the savory soup, “We gotta talk” he told her. Shiziru was cooperative as the hanyou blew on the soup and carefully spooned it into her mouth. Her pride was in tatters, “I’m tired of being treated like a little old lady” she groused as he shoved the spoon at her once more. He arched his brow at her, “Well you are a little old lady so deal with it” he told her. He waited until the soup was gone and then met her eyes with a steady gaze of his own. “You’re very sick” he told her. She nodded tiredly, “I know this”. He shook his head, “Stupid. You reek of poison”. Again she nodded, “Ah, that” she said rather calmly, “I have had my suspicions”. Inuyasha growled, “And you did nothing?” he demanded, “You are the head miko of the Alliance! What happens if you fall?”. She raised her hand, “Silence hanyou” she growled out, “Would you have me be some paranoid old woman, refusing to eat or drink without cause? Such a thing would have given my assassin time to escape. I had to ferret them out”. Inuyasha sighed, “I see the point old woman” he said quietly, “But you waited too long. Your body is out of time”. She nodded, “That is it” she agreed, “But the traitor is known to me and so must be known to you. They are your enemy too, and very soon they will come for you. You and your Kagome”. His ears flickered, “What’s that?”. She heaved a heavy sigh, “Kagome must be groomed to follow me. Her heart is good, her powers are great. She does not see the division of the people. She sees only the division of good and evil. She will follow me to office”. Inuyasha went very still, “But your second has already been chosen” he whispered. Shiziru chuckled, and patted his hand, “That was never official. She assumed. And you know what assuming does Inuyasha”. He nodded, “Makes an ass of me and you” he replied. She chuckled again, “No Inuyasha, just you”. He frowned at her, “Watch it ya old windbag” he snapped. Shiziru gripped the bedding tightly, sweat beading on her brow. “Tell me Shiziru” he pressed, “Who is the traitor?”. Shiziru panted for air, feeling her insides cramp painfully, her expression gray against the warm cream of the linens. “Inu…..yas…sha…..The….. se….cond” she whispered. Inuyasha growled softly to her, soothing her to sleep until Kagome returned with pain reducers. Her words sank into his mind like icy needles. The second. “Oh shit”.
