Chapter 13: Past of Little Importance
Maeko stared around her sparkling cabin with a small smile on her lips. She rested a hand on her chin as she walked around the cabin. Her eyes searched the scoured oak floorboards, and the newly laundered sheets that lay on the futon. "Well, this seems sufficient," she said with a smirk as she stared at Sesshoumaru's dark expression.
"Remove these beads, Maeko," Sesshoumaru said angrily as he tugged the beads around his neck.
"And if I were to remove them," she said walking closer to him a small smile playing across her features, "What would you do once you're free, I wonder?" She gazed at him intently, her eyes seeming to stare right through him. She flinched and turned away. "I thought as much. You are that callous, Sesshoumaru. Your mind only reveals hatred. Why do you choose to wallow in this emotion?"
"You haven't the privilege to question my thoughts. My mind is my own. It is not for you to invade on a whim," he said menacingly," Do not test my benevolence, Maeko."
"It is not for you to dictate how I use my power, Nephew. This power belongs to me, and me alone. You do not own me."
Sesshoumaru's lips turned up slightly into a bitter smile as he stared at her. "Of course, I suppose you're right. I don't own you, at least, not in the way you own people, right Maeko."
"Sess...,"Maeko's voice froze as Inuyasha's voice cut into the room. "What is he talking about," Inuyasha asked as he walked into the hut and stood beside Maeko, who wouldn't meet his gaze.
"Do not meddle in things that don't concern you, Hanyou. Whatever my past, it will never have anything to do with you. You'll never have the luxury of being important enough for me to waste my time on." He glared at Inuyasha as he pushed past him out of the hut.
Inuyasha's hand clenched into fist as he stared after Sesshoumaru. "Maeko," he said, his voice shaking slightly with emotion. She didn't meet his gaze, her olivine eyes stared blankly at the roughly planked floorboards. "Maeko," he said again, his voice louder this time. She blinked and slowly raised her eyes to his. There was a new type of fire in the honeyed eyes that stared into her own.
"Show me."
"Are you sure about this, Inuyasha?" Maeko asked as she sat next to the stream, " I want you to know that once you start this, there is no going back or stopping. You will see this through to the end."
Inuyasha's eyes drifted to the tree's they just walked through as he thought of his brother's arrogance and dismissal. He thought it was high time he knew what made Sesshoumaru think he was so special. Maeko could see the determination in the honeyed eyes that met hers. "I won't run away, Maeko." He sat next to her, his posture rigid. Maeko smiled thoughtfully at the nervous boy at her side. Inuyasha watched as she organized to herbs into neat lines in front of her. She produced a mortar and pestle from the bag at her side. As he watched her Inuyasha began to feel awakenings of apprehension slither into his stomach. "What am I hoping for?" He asked himself, "What will happen after I see it?"
A dull scraping sound woke him from his thoughts. He watched Maeko's smooth fingers maneuver the pestle. "First things first, Inuyasha." She said," how much do you know about Sesshoumaru?"
"Next to nothing," Inuyasha said," I know he's prince of the western lands."
"Hmm, well yes, he is lord of the western lands, anything else?"
"He has a human companion and a slimy toad follower. Other than that, I know nothing about his past." Inuyasha was thoughtful for a moment.
"What is it?" Maeko asked.
"He did tell me that father was at his birthing, but that's everything he's told me."
Maeko froze in her movements and stared at him in surprise. "It never occurred to me that he would be bothered enough to lie."
"What are you talking about?"
Maeko dipped a ladle into the stream and drained the contents into the mortar. "Inutaisho wasn't at Sesshomaru's birthing." She poured the mixture into a bracken clay cup.
"What," Inuyasha said his eyes widening in shock, "Why would he lie to me?"
"I suppose we should start there." She said handing him the cup,"Drink this, it will make your mind more pliable."
Inuyasha stared at the cup in his fingers. The cold clay felt oddly foreboding on his palm. His fingers trembled slightly as he moved them around the cup.
"We can stop, Inuyasha, if you want to. I won't force you."
Inuyasha shook his head. "I've made up my mind." He thought," No turning back." He lifted the cup to his mouth and drained it in one gulp.
Maeko smirked somewhat impressed by his tenacity. "Try to relax," she said, "The memories will start out chaotic. It will be taxing, but don't try to fight it. Let your mind flow with the thoughts and everything will become clear. If you're ready, let's begin."
She slid her eyes closed. Inuyasha did the same. All he could see was blackness at first, then the blackness began to blur around the edges becoming brighter and brighter until a picture slid into focus.
A silver haired man slammed alabaster fingers against a desk. His honey gold eyes were slitted into a look of fierce animosity. Soft, pert lips were twisted into an angry grimace, but this did little to mar the handsome complexion of his angular face. His chin was sharp, but this was offset by his thin face with high cheekbones. His strong features were imposing, but otherwise handsome.
"Careful, Inutaisho, you wouldn't want people to think you've lost control."
Fiery golden eyes met peridot ones. "Don't try my patience, Maeko. I am in no mood."
Maeko smirked and leaned against his desk. "Does it really bother you so much?"
"It doesn't bother me. It maddens me that I should be forced to marry her."
Maeko chuckled, "be it her or anyone else, does it really make a difference? You need to marry to appease your family. Marrying her accomplishes that goal, doesn't it?"
Inutaisho sighed, "Why couldn't you agree to marry me?"
"That's simple," she said, "You're far too boring for me, Inutaisho." Inutaisho let the faintest of smiles drift across his face. "It won't be so bad, you'll see."
The scene began to fade as another took its place.
"I do not understand you, Inutaisho," a creamy skinned silver haired women with a cerulean crescent mark on her forehead skimmed her lithe fingers along the mahogany writing desk, " You know it is necessary. Why must you struggle in such a useless manner?" The iciness of her voice was almost palpable. Her cold detachment evident on her blank features.
"Necessary for whom, exactly?" Inutaisho asked his stern eyes following the fingers trailing across the desk toward him. "Surely, you don't mean me."
"Of course, Inutaisho, I mean you." Ariadne said, " An heir is an important step in strengthening our power."
"Our power," Inutaisho said with a slight smirk, "Your power is what your worried about. Without a son, your positions not secure. Don't pretend to be worried about my lands, Ariadne. All you ever think of is yourself."
"No, you are the fool who only thinks selfishly. Your rule needs stability. An heir accomplishes this. Don't let foolish emotions cloud your judgment."
"I will have an heir, Ariadne, " he stood and pushed her hands away from him, " just not with you."
The smallest flicker of anger passed across her face as she watched his back disappear through the shoji.
"Having a difficult time, I see."
"What are you doing here, Maeko."
Maeko chuckled as she leaned against the shoji frame. "You don't need to be embarrassed, nee-chan. I'm sure if you threw yourself at anyone else it might have worked."
"If you've only come to insult me, Maeko, you're truly wasting your time. I won't be baited by your foolish actions."
Maeko's sardonic smile softened, "It's really getting to you, isn't it?"
Araidne sighed, "Don't be ridiculous, Maeko. I've not yet..." Araidne's eyes snapped to hers. Maeko recoiled slightly at their intensity. "You could aid me, couldn't you?"
"What are you...."
"Inutaisho trusts you. You could easily give him something that would make my entrance to his bedchamber welcome."
"Why would I ever do such a thing," Maeko asked coldly.
"Because you care about Inutaisho enough to save him. His obstinance is only putting his life at risk. The western lands are already buzzing with treachery and mistrust. No one believes his rule is secure, and they will continue to believe so until he has an heir. We must maintain a semblance of unity. Can't you see our kingdom is slowly dividing? If I am deemed unnecessary," Ariadne's eyes traveled to the ground,"even my life isn't safe."
Maeko's eyes widened, "Are you truly willing to do this? Have you even thought about what Inutaisho will do?"
"I'm aware of what I'm risking," she exclaimed her eyes flooding with determination, "Help me, Maeko."
Maeko's mouth parted in surprise as she met her sisters desperate eyes. She sighed, "This is the first and last time I'll do this task for you, and I make no guarentee's it'll work."
The scene winked out with another taking it's place. "You can't leave," Meako said slamming her fist against the shoji frame barring his exit, "Ariadne has entered her labor. She will have the child any time now. You must be here for the birth."
"That abomination is not my child. I hold no claim to it. You brought about its existence give it your claim."
Maeko's stare hardened, "I did what I thought was necessary to save the people I care about. You have every reason to be angry with me, I deserve it, but the child has done nothing. Don't let your hatred cloud your judgment."
"I will not acknowledge something that was never meant to exist," Inutaisho said as he pushed her aside roughly.
"You know what It'll mean for the child if you leave. Can you still be so willing to cause an innocent life such pain?"
Inutaisho paused in the open doorway to stare at her. His cold, honeyed eyes showed no hint of compassion as he said, "Whatever happens to that parasite growing in her womb is none of my affair. I want the whole of the western lands to know of my disapproval. His weakness will be my testimonial." He smirked at the angry glint in her eyes, then disappeared through the shoji.
The scene slowly faded away. Inuyasha's head swam as he tried to take in all that he saw. "That was my father," he thought as his father's face flashed in his mind. The surroundings seemed to blur as he slowly opened his eyes.
"Are you feeling alright," Maeko asked as she stared at his blank features, "It can be difficult the first time."
"Weakness," Inuyasha mumbled.
"What?" Meako asked concern permeating her voice.
"What did he mean by weakness?"
Maeko looked away,"It is difficult to explain to someone unfamiliar with our customs. A claiming is like taking possession of that life. It's an affirmation of that person's existence. Unclaimed demons are weaker because a claiming bestows your father's strength and lineage of demon power."
"That doesn't make sense," Inuyasha exclaimed in confusion, "Sesshoumaru os stronger that any demon I know."
Maeko nodded, "he is strong, but that is his own strength, his own youki. His family youki gives him no aid in times of danger."
Inuyasha's brow knitted, "I don't understand."
Maeko sighed, "like I said it's hard to explain." She rubbed a finger on the juncture between her neck and her collarbone. "The claim is made here. You should have one too."
Inuyasha slid his fingers across his neck. He could feel the indentations of wounds that had healed long before. There was a slight electric buzz that echoed through his body as he touched the mark. Inuyasha felt calmer and comforted as if there was someone standing beside him.
"Do you kind of understand now," Maeko asked as she shifted to her feet, "There are no such marks on Sesshoumaru's neck. All of Inutaisho's youki was transferred to you upon your birth." She packed her mortar and pestle back into her satchel, and slung in onto her shoulder. "I think that's enough for now, don't you?"
