The best is yet to come…
With You Chapter Fourteen The Return The sun rose on another day. The sun’s rays shone in the young woman’s face, rousing her from her sleep. She sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes and stretching her arms. She then pulled herself to her feet and yawned. Today’s a new day. * * * * * * Kohaku moaned as he thrust into the young girl beneath him. She was tight, squeezing his manhood with each new thrust. Her fingers dug into his back and his neck as their lovemaking began to reach the boiling point. Kohaku let out a cry as he emptied his seed into her, panting and breathing heavily. She was also panting as she hugged him close and smiled against his cheek. “I love you, Kohaku.” He smiled as well. “I love you, too, Koharu.” * * * * * * Kohaku walked out of his hut, after letting his new wife fall asleep. He raised a hand to his eyes, looking at the villagers as they began to prepare for their morning chores. He saw his sister as she walked with her children to the hut where the weapons were forged. Smiling, he began to walk toward the hut. He stopped outside the door, leaning against it, and watched as his sister showed one of her daughters how to properly hold a scythe. She then turned and saw him standing there. Smiling, she said, “Ah, Kohaku. This is your area of expertise. Would you like to give me a hand?” “Sure.” Kohaku walked over to where they were standing and took the scythe in his hand. Later that day, as the children were allowed to go and play, Kohaku sat outside of his home with Koharu and watched the children as they played. As he sat, Koharu leaned against his arm. He put his arm around her shoulder and hugged her close as they listened to the sounds of the laughter coming from the children. “Someday, that’ll be our children,” he said. She smiled. “Maybe sooner than later,” she replied. The two of them chuckled as they remembered their little adventure from the night before, and then Koharu pulled Kohaku’s face toward hers and laid a passionate kiss on his lips. As they broke apart, Kohaku noticed his sister coming toward him. She had a serious look on her face, which prompted Kohaku to stand as she came to where they were sitting. “What’s wrong, Sango?” “We just received a message from a nearby village. They say that there’s a demon in the forest nearby and they’re asking someone to come and exterminate it.” Kohaku looked away. “I see.” He was quiet as he let his mind wander for a moment and then he said, “Okay. Tell the twins to get ready. We’re going to leave right away.” Sango looked worried for a moment. Kohaku saw this and quickly tried to ease his sister’s mind. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it myself, I just want them to come along so they can observe.” His sister let out a sigh of relief and turned away. Koharu stood and asked her husband what was wrong with his sister. Kohaku sighed. “She’s been that way ever since Miroku passed away. She’s just worried that something might happen to me, or her children, and that she’ll be left alone.” Koharu bowed her head. “I was surprised when I heard he passed away. How-“ Kohaku shook his head. “It’s not something that we talk about. It’s too hard on Sango, and on the children.” He then turned away and left her standing there, making his way into the hut to prepare for his new mission. * * * * * * The forest leading to the village was thick with underbrush, which made Kohaku happy he wore shin guards. He hated thorns. He looked above and saw the girls on Kirara’s back, holding on for dear life. The oldest was sitting in front, while her sister sat behind her with her arms wrapped around her waist. Kirara flew slowly, trying to remain steady so that she wouldn’t drop her precious cargo that was clutching at her back and her neck. Kirara had been there when Miroku had met with his accident, and years of friendship and companionship had given her a connection to Sango that was rare between humans and demons, and she had felt the anguish that overtook her friend when she lost her husband. So she knew she had to protect the girls and keep them safe. No telling what Sango would do if she lost them too. Kohaku watched the twin-tail as she glided through the air, never once picking up too much speed. He smiled. The girls were in good hands. He began to pick up speed, then jumped and grabbed a branch of a nearby tree. The momentum carried him forward, which allowed him to land on the next branch with relative ease. He began to leap through the branches, silent as a cat. * * * * * * It was dusk by the time they reached the village. The villagers were all gathered in a circle, waiting for their arrival. Kohaku walked toward the group and addressed the old man in front. Behind him, Kirara landed gently on the ground. Once the girls had jumped off, she transformed and jumped into the youngest one’s arms. “Are you the village elder?” The old man nodded. “You must be the demon exterminators.” Kohaku nodded. The old man looked at the twins. “They look a little young to be exterminators.” “They’re in training. I’ll be the one who will face the demon. Can you describe it for me?” The old man stepped aside. “I wasn’t the one who saw it. It was the children. They can tell you.” A few children stepped to the front of the group and began to frantically speak all at once. Kohaku tried to calm them down, but to no avail. All he could get out of them at first was that the demon was tall, walked like a human, and had some sort of shell like armor. Then one child stepped forward and began to speak. “Uh, exterminator man?” Kohaku looked at the little boy with an exasperated look on his face. “Yes.” “I can tell you about him.” Kohaku raised an eyebrow. “Well, go on.” The boy put his hand under his chin. “Well, he looked like a man. He was tall and had long white hair. He was dressed in a kimono and he wore some sort of armor. He had two swords, too: one with a black sheath and the other had all sorts of markings on the handle.” Long white hair? A sword with markings on the handle? It can’t be… Kohaku looked at the boy with intense concentration. “Are you sure about this?” The boy nodded. “I thought he was a man at first, but then he saw us and he tried to scare us away by turning his eyes red. That’s how we knew he was a demon.” Kohaku nodded. “Okay.” He turned to the twins and said, “I want you two to stay here and watch over the villagers.” The girls nodded. Kirara sat up and mewed. Kohaku shook his head. “I want you to stay here and help the twins, Kirara. I think this is something I can handle on my own.” Kirara mewed and relaxed. Kohaku turned to the little boy. “Can you show me where you saw the demon?” The boy pointed in the direction of the forest. “He was somewhere in there.” “Okay.” Kohaku began to walk in the direction of the forest. * * * * * * He had been in the forest for quite a while when he saw a flash of white out of the corner of his eye. He immediately took off in that direction and sure enough, in a matter of minutes, he ran into Sesshomaru. When Sesshomaru felt Kohaku’s presence behind him, he stopped. Kohaku followed suit. “What do you want?” Sesshomaru said. It seemed that after all that time, the demon lord still remembered his scent. “The villagers nearby said that there was a demon in their forest. They hired me to slay it.” Sesshomaru turned to look at him. “So…you’re here to slay me?” Kohaku chuckled. “No…when I realized it was you, I wanted to talk to you, so that there was no misunderstanding.” “I see.” Sesshomaru’s eyes narrowed. Kohaku could tell that he was still on guard, so he pulled his weapon from his shoulder and stuck it in the ground. He then raised his hands in front of him and began to approach Sesshomaru, who stood quietly and did not move. “Listen, Lord Sesshomaru. The villagers are uncomfortable. They think you’re going to attack their village and kill them at any moment.” Sesshomaru scoffed. “You know that I would rather not waste my time.” Kohaku nodded. “I know that, but they don’t. I’m not going to try anything. But I would appreciate it if you would leave. Maybe just go somewhere else. Please.” Sesshomaru was quiet for a moment. Then he replied, “Very well.” He turned to leave, but Kohaku’s voice delayed his departure. “By the way, how is Rin? I haven’t seen her for quite some time.” Sesshomaru stood quietly. “I wouldn’t know. It’s been a while since I’ve seen her as well.” Kohaku frowned. “How long has it been since you’ve seen her?” “A long time. Not since she helped me regain my strength.” Kohaku’s eyes widened. “You mean when that demon attacked you? But that was-” “A long time ago.” Sesshomaru turned to walk away, but once again, Kohaku’s voice stopped him. “So, you haven’t gone back to see her since then?” “No.” Kohaku let out a sigh. “Well, with all due respect, Lord Sesshomaru, I think it would be in your best interest if you were to go back. To see Rin, I mean.” Sesshomaru turned to look at him. “And just why would I do that?” * * * * * * Kohaku emerged from the forest, brushing the branches and leaves from his arms. He began to walk toward the village elder, who approached him and said, “Is the demon taken care of? Were you able to slay it?” Kohaku answered, “Well, sir, the good news is that the demon is gone and he won’t bother you again.” As he expected, the old man didn’t hear the part about that being the good news, which meant that Kohaku didn’t have to tell him that he didn’t actually slay the demon, a demon for whom he had not brought the necessary force to deal with, had he been a real threat. The villagers began to celebrate and pulled the young man into the crowd, congratulating and thanking him. It took a while for Kohaku to push himself away from the crowd and make his way toward the twins. The trio of demon slayers made their goodbyes and began to walk back towards the forest to make their way home. As they began their long journey home, the youngest asked, “Uncle Kohaku, why didn’t you take any payment?” Kohaku looked at the trees in front of him as he dipped and dodged through the branches. “There was no need. It turns out that the demon wasn’t anything to worry about.” The twins frowned as they tried to figure out what their uncle meant. * * * * * * As he made his way up the path, Sesshomaru saw Jaken and Ah-Un ahead. He began to walk ahead, knowing that they would follow. As their presence got closer to his, he could hear Jaken’s voice, “Lord Sesshomaru, where are we headed this time?” Sesshomaru was silent as he began to head down the dirt road. * * * * * * Days passed by, and just as Jaken came to the realization that this was just going to be another one of those endless journeys to nowhere, Sesshomaru suddenly stopped in his tracks. Jaken stopped to survey their surroundings, but his attention was diverted by his master’s voice. He spoke with a voice that was stern and eyes that were narrowed fiercely. “Stay here.” Jaken jumped at the look of ferocity in his master’s eyes, nodding his head frantically. “Yes, m’lord.” Sesshomaru turned and walked away. Jaken watched him closely, and he couldn’t help but notice that there was a sense of urgency in his master’s movements as he walked away in the direction of Inuyasha’s village. * * * * * * Rin was quiet as she knelt down in the dirt beneath her, picking up the herbs that were buried beneath the ground. Wiping the sweat from her brow, she turned to look at the field where there were a crowd of children playing. She watched them carefully as they ran around the field, tossing a small ball back and forth. She smiled and returned to her picking herbs. Some time had passed and Rin was picking the last of her herbs when she noticed that there was a commotion near the path leading into the village. There was a crowd forming near the outskirts of the village. Curious, she set her bundle down and began to make her way towards the crowd. As she got closer, she noticed that the group was comprised of only girls. As girls ran past her, she happened to catch a few pieces of conversation. All she heard was “demon lord” and “returned”, but those words alone were enough to make her heart begin to race in her chest. She herself began to run toward the crowd. As she pushed through the gaggle of high pitched voices and colorful kimonos, she could see someone with white hair who stood high above the crowd. Just as she made her way to the front, she pushed her way through the two girls in front of her, but she tripped and fell on her knees just as she managed to get to the front of the crowd. She grunted as her knees hit the dirt, and then looked up at the figure in the center of the crowd. Sure enough, there stood her Lord Sesshomaru, obviously irritated at all of the attention that he was receiving. He looked down and saw her kneeling there, and she could’ve sworn that she saw a small smile cross his face. It was barely there for a second, however, and all she could see was that cold blank stare that seemed to be frozen on his face the majority of the time. She picked herself up from the ground and dusted off her kimono, then began to walk towards him. She looked up at him, right into his eyes. He did the same, that cold stare seeming to freeze her insides and setting her nerves aflame. There the two of them stood, staring at each other with a sort of deepness that only the two of them could feel. Then, without warning, she flung her arms around his waist and hugged him tight, her eyes filling with water as she cried tears of joy at the return of her lord. The group surrounding them was silent, taken aback at the show of affection from the young woman in front of them. Seeshomaru was shocked himself (although he didn’t show it) as he looked at the woman who had clutched him so tightly. He stood there in shock for a while, then he gently laid a hand on Rin’s arm and began to pull it from his waist. Rin noticed, and quickly pulled her arms down and looked away, embarrassed. She began to scold herself in her head. She knew better that to do that. But you haven’t seen him in forever… Just then, she heard him speak her name. “Rin?” She looked at him and nodded, unable to bring herself to speak to him directly. He stepped up to her and looked into her eyes again. “Is that you?” She nodded. “Yes, Lord Sesshomaru. It’s me.” She grabbed his hand and began to pull him away from the crowd. He followed her, more than happy to be leaving that annoying group of human girls behind. Some of them were jealous as the demon lord walked away with his former ward. Eventually, Rin let go of Sesshomaru’s hand, and he began to walk alongside her. As they waked, side by side, Sesshomaru looked Rin over. She had grown a little since he had last seen her, and she also seemed to have put on a little weight as well. But she was still stunning. She wore a orange and cream colored yukata that had each color in squares, similar to the one she wore during her travels with him as a child. A cream-colored scarf was tied at her waist, and her hands were folded in front of her. She was looking at the ground. She was like a shy little girl. It was almost as though she were a child again. Sesshomaru watched her closely, but he couldn’t get anything from her except that she seemed completely nervous. Maybe it had something to do with what Kohaku had shared with him. “So how have you been, my lord?” Her voice snapped him out of his thoughts, and he shifted his focus to the matter at hand. “I’ve been…well.” She looked at him. “That’s all?” Sesshomaru quickly changed the subject. “What have you been doing since I’ve been gone, Rin?” Rin looked at him with a surprised look on her face. This was the first time that he had ever asked her something like that. Usually, he was just silent, and if he did say something, it always seemed as though he were thinking out loud. Not only had he initiated a conversation with her, he’d asked her about her well-being. She smiled. There just may be hope after all… “I’ve been doing well, my lord. Times have been a little rough lately, due to…” Her head sprung up, as though she remembered something important. She began to run away from Sesshomaru, in the direction of a field of herbs and vegetables. She then stopped, turned around, grabbed Sesshomaru’s hand again, and began to pull him away with her, quickly muttering something about someone that he needed to meet. Soon, they stopped on the path near the field of crops. Sesshomaru noticed a bundle of herbs nearby, but his attention was called away by Rin’s voice. She was standing at the fence that separated the crops from the meadow, waving her hand frantically and calling out, “Saiyuki! Saiyuki, come here!” Cocking his head to look past her, he could see a group of children playing. One of them broke away from the others and began to run towards the voice that had beckoned them. As the child got closer, Sesshomaru began to frown. He realized that what Kohaku had told him was true: Rin had become a mother in his absence. Then just as the child made it to the fence, Rin grabbed them up in her arms and lifted them over the fence. She then began to walk back toward Sesshomaru, taking care not to step on the plants on the ground. After reaching the road, she set the child down, who took one look at Sesshomaru and promptly turned and ran behind her, clutching at her skirt and staring at Sesshomaru from behind her legs. Sesshomaru looked at her, and sharply inhaled. The little girl was no more than five or six years old, wearing a kimono similar in design to Rin’s. She stared at him with features that reminded him of Rin when she was a child; she even wore her hair the same. But there were some fundamental differences: instead of the deep brown, hazel eyes that her mother had, her eyes bore a golden shine that seemed a little dull in comparison to his, but still shone with a ferocity that was similar to sunlight. And instead of the lengthy, coal black hair that sat atop her mother’s head, she herself had hair that was as white as a freshly fallen snow that flowed in the gentle breeze, similar to his. Instead of the dull fingernails that were customary for humans, she bore a set of sharp claws, and even her fangs were beginning to grow noticeably. But Sesshomaru was not surprised by the fact that she was a half-demon. What made him uncomfortable was how much the girl was like him. Although she was hiding behind her mother’s legs and clutching at her skirt as though she were afraid, her body was tense and her hand that wasn’t in plain view was crooked with her middle and her index fingers extended, similar to how he did when he was forced to use his poison claws. The look in her eyes wasn’t one of fear, but of distrust. He had seen that same look in his own reflection many times. She saw him as a threat and was ready to attack, to defend herself and her mother if need be. Sesshomaru slowly came to the realization that this was no ordinary half-demon. This half-demon is my child. This is my daughter…While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
