Chapter 14- Ayame On a Mission
The palace smelled of Ayame, or better known as iris. Every dog-demon that worked in the palace carried a very foul look on their face. Even Satoru, who always had a smile on his face. Ayame, being the rising villain that she was, felt overjoyed at the revenge. Sesshomaru had stopped her flower orders, but the perfume's scent was far stronger than the flowers. It was brilliant, if only the other demons didn't have to suffer. Maybe she'd buy more perfume and spill it in Sesshomaru's office...
Ayame was perfecting her evil snicker, 'I hate Sesshomaru for turning me into such a devious demon. But, I can't help but like it.' She thought to herself.
She had retreated to the library, at least it smelt like books instead of the strong perfume in the hall. Her nose was definitely not as strong as the dog-demons, but it was still strong. Besides, she had research to do. Not that the research she had done was going anywhere. Ayame had torn the library apart trying to find something, anything to save her from the mark. But the only thing she found was death. The only way to end a mark was if the other mate died. Which was impossible, there was no way Ayame was going to kill such a strong demon like Sesshomaru. She also didn't feel that her life was so terrible that she had to end it.
Letting out a deep sigh, she closed another book, nothing. Leaning on her hand she debated silently, 'Maybe I could discreetly ask Satoru?'
She thought about how that conversation would go. 'So. Satoru. My friend has a cousin, with a friend who also has another friend, with a sister, who has this issue. She happens to be mated with this over arrogant asshole, and she wants to remove the mark. Do you know how?'
The wolf-demon snorted. Satoru would give her a huge lecture about how she shouldn't take her mate for granted and blah, blah, blaaaah.
Shoving the book back into its spot, she left the library and walked towards her room. Kilana's new pups would cheer her up. She smiled at the thought. They had already named them all. Akira for the only girl, already turning out just like her mother. Daiki and Kei were just like their uncles, and then there was Raiden Jr. All the pups had a snow white coat except for Raiden, his coat was a rich chestnut, just like his deceased father. Which was why Ayame and Kilana decided to name him Raiden, after his brave father.
Wrinkling her nose, she walked through the heavy smell of iris perfume and opened the door to her room. All the pups came running to her, Kei tripped over himself and face planted. Giggling she swept them all up in her arms and gave them kisses. Ayame played with the pups for awhile, but her eyes soon became heavy. Yawning, she laid down with her pack of seven surrounding her.
She was running from something that was behind her. Her legs weighed more than they usually did. Gasping for breath, Ayame leaned against a tree in the forest. She frowned, the forest? A roar behind Ayame startled her out of the confusing thoughts. Spinning, she saw what she was running from. 'A rock demon? Just great, they're getting revenge.'
"It's Sesshomaru you want! Not me!" Ayame yelled at the beast.
The rock demon roared again, ignoring her yelling, he charged. "Well.. fuck."
Ayame tried to jump up into the tree behind her, but her legs refused to move. The realization hit her that she was dreaming, but the rock demon that was charging her was still scaring the shit out of her. Ayame backed up against the tree, closed her eyes tight, and waited for the quick end of her dream. The rock demon grabbed her around the waist and lifted her up. She screamed, even though she knew it was just a dream.
(Authors Note: At this point I was faced with letting the reader imagine the music or give you something to listen to. I'm going to give you the song I listened to while writing this scene, but if you don't want to go to the trouble, just know its a very soft piano with some violin. Here it is: Any Other Name by Thomas Newman - Also, I don't own this song or make money by putting it in this story.)
"You play the damsel in distress very well." said a deep male voice.
'This rock demon has a very sexy voice,' Ayame thought to herself.
"Open your eyes, my flower."
Ayame's eyes fluttered open to see piercing, turquoise eyes looking down at her. They were so un-naturally bright, she was sure that the stone it self envied them. She was positive those eyes could see inside her, right down to her soul. Her savior wore a black mask on his face which made his eyes pop even more so. Ayame blinked a few times, noticing that she was in this mans arms. Her hands were wrapped around his neck, fingers tangled in his long raven-black hair. Then she saw that they were flying through the air, over the forest. "Oh", was all she could manage to say.
A chuckle rumbled in his chest, "Oh indeed."
Instead of shoving out of his arms, like she normally would, Ayame pressed in closer to him. It was nice to have a dream about someone other than Sesshomaru. Ayame stared up at the mysterious man, she wanted to run her fingers along his jaw line and maybe kiss him? 'This is my dream... so why don't I kiss him?'
As if he heard her thoughts, he looked down at her, the wind blowing stray hairs across his face. He smiled at her, making her heart beat faster. Ayame pulled him closer, she would get her kiss.
Then he dropped her.
Ayame sat up on her bed and stared around her room. "Whaaa?" She muttered rubbing her eyes.
"Humpf! Even the men in my dreams are unpredictable and rough with me!"
Grumbling, she crawled out of bed. Since she didn't have to go her morning meetings with Sesshomaru, Ayame skipped down to the kitchen. She could already taste the delicious dumplings that Satoru had an talent for making. She skipped into the steam filled room with a bright smile, but it quickly died when she saw Jaken was waiting for her. "Ugh. What do you want?"
Jaken crossed his arms and turned up his nose. "Lord Sesshomaru has requested that you dine with young Rin today, sin-"
"He can shove his request up his as--"
Jaken cleared his throat and continued his message, "SINCE he will be unable to dine with Rin himself."
Ayame rolled her eyes at the kappa. "So it'll just be Rin and I?"
The imp nodded, obviously trying to keep his temper under control.
"Alright. Fine." Ayame figured having breakfast with some young teenager couldn't be so bad.
"Follow me then!" Ayame glared and the imp coughed, "Ahem. Please follow, m'lady."
Ayame nodded and allowed the imp to escort her into the large dining room. She had never eaten in the dinning room. Since she was considered part of the palace staff, she always ate in the kitchen. In the dining room, two places were set up with cushions, Rin already sitting on one. Ayame joined her, trying to sit as lady like as possible. The young teenage girl was wearing a lavish silk kimono, which looked to have been ironed on her because it looked far too perfect. A sparkling hair pin stuck out of her carefully placed hair. 'Pretty fancy for just breakfast,' Ayame reckoned.
Rin pouted at the kappa, "Master Jaken, where is Lord Sesshomaru?"
"Lord Sesshomaru has business that he must see to. His mate, Ayame, has agreed to dine with you in his place." He responded.
Rin's face fell as she stared down at her food. "Oh..."
'Her love for him is so wrong', Ayame thought to herself. But she shrugged and began to eat. She was starving!
Jaken left them, giving Ayame his normal disgusted look. She really could care less, but what really bugged her was the matching disgusted look on Rin's face. "Um..." Ayame started, "Is there something wrong?"
Rin turned her face away, crossing her arms. "Yes."
Ayame put down her chop sticks. "Alright, I'm sorry Lord Sesshomaru couldn't eat with you. But that's not my fault."
Rin gave a haughty sniff. Clearly Sesshomaru's arrogant ways were rubbing off on this poor girl. "You can't have Lord Sesshomaru. He's mine."
Ayame stared at Rin, not even bothering to hide her shock. "B-but.. you, wait, what?"
The human girl turned back to face her, "I'm going to marry Lord Sesshomaru! Not you!"
Ayame snorted, then laughed so hard her food almost came back up. Rin kept a constant look of distaste on her face. The wolf-demon wiped tears from her eyes, "I'm sorry. It's just. You really think high and mighty Lord Sesshomaru would lower himself to marry a human?"
Rin's face flushed red with anger, "How could you say such rude things about Lord Sesshomaru??"
Ayame shrugged as she thought about it. 'Doesn't surprise me she'd feel this way about him. But Sesshomaru must view her as a daughter, not a considered mate...'
"I don't know why you like him so much. From what I've heard, he thinks humans are the scum that walks the earth. Much like most demons."
Tears began to trickle down her face as she glared at the wolf-demon. Ayame sighed, "Here we go with a teenage, emotional breakdown."
Rin stood suddenly, knocking over her food. "You're a liar, how could you say such hateful things!"
Ayame peered at the raging teenager while trying to protect her dumplings. "Whatever helps you sleep at night, princess." The last word was filled with so much venom, she surprised even herself.
Rin burst into full blown sobs, stomping her foot like a spoiled toddler. She leaned down pointing a finger at Ayame. "I don't care if-M-master Jaken says you're hi-is m-mate, you stay away from M-my Lord Sesshomaru!"
Jaken came flying in at that moment, "Ayame!! What have you done this time?!"
Ayame glared at Jaken. "This was all your idea. Make her leave before she hurts my precious dumplings."
Jaken huffed and took Rin's hand. "Come along, Rin. Lord Sesshomaru has a gift waiting for you in the stable."
Ayame stared after them with a raised eyebrow, 'Did Sesshomaru seriously get the spoiled brat a pony?'
She scratched her nose then gave a nonchalant shrug. "Who cares?"
She then blissfully admired her dumplings that she had protected with her life. "There, there my lovely's," she cooed, "You're safe now."
Then she shoved them in her mouth.
After breakfast she made her way to the library. Ayame refused to give up on finding a way to remove this godforsaken mark on her neck. If she figured out a way, then she'd also be doing Rin a huge favor apparently. Rin's sudden declaration of love for Sesshomaru surprised her, but really, she should have seen it coming. Tapping her chin thoughtfully, Ayame looked around the library. She'd read a lot of books in here, but there were still so many. Ayame was just thankful that she could read.
About six years back, Ayame had gone to Kagome and demanded she teach her how to find sacred jewel shards. Kagome had made it very clear that it was gift she was born with. Ayame stuck around, bugging Kagome constantly to teach her. Somehow Kagome discovered that Ayame couldn't read and offered to teach her that instead. At first Ayame was hesitant, she had no use for reading in the forest. But Kagome insisted, so here Ayame was, very thankful for Kagome's pushy ways.
A flicker of light caught Ayame's attention. A leather bound book, with what looked like diamonds pressed into it, sat up high on a book shelf. "Ooo... shiny, " Ayame whispered with awe. Books like that must contain information that Ayame would need. Mostly she just wanted to see if there were actually diamonds pressed into the spine.
Ayame tilted her head all the way back, looking up the bookshelf. 'That's really high.'
Instead of being smart and getting the step ladder, she began to climb up the shelves. She didn't worry about the shelf falling, it was carved out of the wall. She grunted as she climbed the tall shelf, somehow she didn't realize the book was this far up. She looked up at the sparkling book. "You will be mine!" She declared to the book. Her words reminded her of how Sesshomaru used the word 'mine' a lot to describe her.
Ayame growled at the thought, climbing the last few shelves. Satisfied with her successful climb, she exhaled with a triumphant nod. Ayame grabbed the book and pulled. The book was much larger than she thought it would be. From down on the ground it seemed much easier to carry. Frowning, Ayame pulled again. She eeped when she realized that the book was not only huge, but also very heavy. The huge book smashed against her chest, pushing her backwards. With a loud scream and flailing arms, she fell to her doom. As she fell, Ayame absently thought about the mysterious masked man from her dream. Too bad he was only in her dreams, not here with her in the library.
Instead of falling against the hard wooden floor of the library, she fell right into strong waiting arms. Gasping, she opened her eyes, expecting to see those turquoise eyes. Instead, her gaze met apathetic golden eyes. Ayame felt like she'd just wrapped herself up and delivered the Ayame package to Sesshomaru.
"There is a step ladder better suited for retrieving books on high shelves." He stated simply.
Ayame crossed her arms, not even attempting to struggle out of his arms. She didn't feel like a repeat of the time at the bath. "Thank you, Lord Sesshomaru. Could you please put me down?"
Sesshomaru's face could have been made of stone. 'He's obviously still pissed about the last time we saw each other,' Ayame figured. He set her down gently, then picked up the book on the floor. Golden curling letters made it very clear that this book contained information about Sesshomaru's family. It did definitely not have the answers to Ayame's questions. Sesshomaru set the book on a table, "Why do you want this book?"
Ayame stared at the book. She didn't want it. It was just sparkling at her and she had to have it. Ayame shrugged and looked away from his questioning stare. "I don't care. I'm just curious." He said.
"Researching."
He raised a brow at her. "Researching what?"
"Trying to figure out why you're such an arrogant bastard." She muttered.
"I assure you, my parents were mated and wed well before I was conceived."
Ayame shrugged again, staying silent.
Sesshomaru gazed at her thoughtfully, "Actually, I'm impressed you can even read. Considering how feral you are."
Ayame snarled at him, "I resent that!"
Sesshomaru continued to stare, calculating her carefully. "Fine then. I'll leave you to it."
He turned and left without another word. Ayame stared after him with her mouth open. 'What? No fight? No trying to molest me or reminding me that I belong to him? That's new...'
She hummed out loud as she glanced over at the book on the table. She had risked her life to get the book. Well, she wouldn't have died, she was a full blooded demon. But it would have hurt like hell if Sesshomaru hadn't caught her. She sat down and began to flick through the pages, anything she wanted to know about his family was in these pages. She grinned to herself. Hooray for stalking!
