Chapter Fourteen: Enemy Territory
For weeks we had been travelling. Along the way, I took what opportunities to ready myself. Yet, I was still nervous. I could heal a pretty wide range of injuries without getting tired but I still had physical limits. Not to mention something had to be done with the children. Though, separating Rin from Sesshomaru would be a prickly prospect. Sighing as I sat up from my sleeping bag, I looked over at said youkai.
He wore his normal, neutral expression, gold eyes meeting her own steadily. As if sensing I wished to speak to him, he gestured for me to come to him. Getting to my feet, I prepared myself for what might be a nasty confrontation. After what happened in the cave, I had doubt he would kill me but he wouldn’t take kindly to what I was going to propose. In the past, he had merely trusted Jaken and Ah-Un with Rin’s safety. Now, that just wouldn’t be enough.
Her and Shippo had to be relocated back to Kaede’s village. It was the only place safe enough for them. “My Lord, may I offer a suggestion?” I tried, bowing as I got closer. He did not respond, simply waited; as if his silence were permission to continue.
“Soon, we will be reaching an area far too dangerous for the young ones. I propose we send them with Ah-Un and Jaken back to Kaede’s village,” I continued, meeting his eyes. Even as he got to his feet, I met his gaze. Whatever he did to punish me, I would take with honor.
To my surprise, he gave me a barest hint of a smile. More of a quick twitch of his lips than anything. Just as rapidly as it was there, it was gone and he was calling his ward to his side. “Rin, this one would like you to go with Shippo to a safe village,” he explained simply. With a wide grin, the young girl nodded and ran off to tell the young fox. Meanwhile, Jaken got a sour but resigned expression.
“I will prepare Ah-Un for the journey,” he grumbled, waddling toward the two-headed dragon.
Blinking, I turned to the others to see them as non-plussed as I was. All except Kouga. The Wolf Prince wore a thoughtful expression, gaze moving from me to Sesshomaru. An action the Western Lord seemed to take offence toward. Narrowing his eyes, the inu moved closer to me; almost as if he was staking some sort of claim. A notion that would have normally been ridiculous if it weren’t for the odd expression on his face. His normally neutral expression had grown serious, a light frown on his pristine brow.
Immediately, Kouga was holding up his hands; bending his neck to one side in a show of submission. Letting out a huff through his nose, the youkai next to me simply went back to what he was doing; leaving me feeling more than a bit mystified. With what I was seeing, it was almost as if Sesshomaru was courting me. The looks my original group were giving me didn’t help this assumption. Yet, there was nothing I could do with this information without solid proof. Not to mention now was not the time.
With a battle upcoming, I had to keep my mind on the enemy and not a possible romance. Besides, it was possible I wasn’t reading the signals right. I wasn’t exactly an expert in youkai behavior. This could just be how an alpha acts around a pack member. Pushing my confusing thoughts to the back of my head, I turned my attention to Shippo and Rin. Whatever the young girl had told him had the young kitsune puffing with pride. Giggling slightly, Kagome and I walked toward them to say goodbye.
Seeing us approach, the young girl ran forward to hug us both. “Rin will miss you,” she whispered, the young boy behind her scuffing his hind paws shyly. The moment the child was releasing us, Shippo was coming forward. With a sniffle, he pounced onto his adoptive mother and clung to her neck. Nuzzling into her for a few moments, he turned to look at me. A sly expression was in his eyes before he was hugging me as well.
“Watch out for my mama and Rin’s dad,” he whispered in my ear before he was releasing me to scamper back to his small friend.
Frowning slightly, I met his gaze only to have him point to my right. Turning my head, I saw Sesshomaru was observing my every move. Blushing, I spun back to Shippo; only to see him getting on Ah-Un with Rin. Grumbling, Jaken got onto the back. Then they were in the sky, soon disappearing into the distance. As I watched them disappear, I had to wonder just what the young fox knew.
Once the children were gone, it became clear we were now much shorter on transportation. While Kagome could ride on Inuyasha and Kouga had his speed, I could only travel on foot. A fact that would slow us down significantly. This, of course, wasn’t unnoticed by the others. “We could just walk,” Miroku suggested with a reassuring smile despite the fact he had the most to lose by their delay.
“I can’t do that to you guys after so long,” I sighed, guilt filling me at the suggestion. I knew as well as anyone here how much Naraku’s defeat met. I refused to stand in the way of that for any reason.
Looking over at Kouga, I pursed my lips. As much as I hated it, he would be my best bet. Before I could walk toward him to ask, I was halted by an unexpected proposal. “This one will take the human wench,” he offered, the words he used taking any romance out of the gesture. Something I found a bit disappointing despite myself.
“My name is Jade, my Lord,” I corrected before a bristling Inuyasha could.
It was likely because he considered me pack but he was more offended than I was. His nostrils were flared and his jaw was tensed, as if he was ready to fight. Needless to say, I found this ironic given how he had treated Kagome in the beginning. Ignoring him for the time being, I kept my attention on the enigmatic taiyoukai. Rather than correct himself or apologize, he merely gestured for me to come to him.
Not offended, I simply did as he requested; jumping slightly when he wrapped his one arm around me. Then we were rising into the air and I was clinging to him with a gasp. The only thing holding me aloft was now a cloud made of youki and my fear of heights came roaring back tenfold. Letting out a stressed sound, I hid my face in the only place I could; Sesshomaru’s right side. Instantly, his scent surrounded me; wild, tangy and almost like a frozen pine forest. For a second, I could have sworn I heard a very faint chuckle.
Keeping my eyes shut, I fought to keep my breathing regular as I felt us climbing higher. Thankfully, the male holding me kept me steady; preventing me from swaying even slightly. Keeping my face buried, I let out a whine as I felt a breeze whip past me. This seemed to cause Sesshomaru to tighten his grip slightly. Almost as if he was trying to reassure me that I was safe. Daring to open my eyes and look up, I saw him glancing down at me with oddly warm, honey colored eyes.
Then he was switching his focus back to the front, prompting me to do the same despite my fear. What I saw was breathtaking as well as terrifying. With just the cloud holding me up, it was almost as if I was travelling on nothing at all. Clinging tighter to the taiyoukai, I could feel my knees starting to grow weak. “This one will keep you safe,” rumbled an assurance in my ear, making my eyes go wide while my body flashed with heat. Yet, some part of me reminded me it was his duty to protect his pack as alpha.
Despite that, I took comfort from his words. He wasn’t one to make promises lightly. “Thank you, my Lord,” I responded before turning my face back to his side and closing my eyes once more. No amount of assurance took away this kind of fear. Something he seemed to sense.
“This one wonders what happened to make you fear the sky so,” murmured from above me, the oddly phrased question taking me a bit off guard.
I could lie but he was likely to smell it or just hear it in the tone of my voice. Not to mention the fact, I really didn’t want to. I felt faintly sick at just the idea. Nibbling my lower lip, I decided I gained nothing by hiding this from him. After all, I didn’t have a well to protect like Kagome. I had ended up here through no real fault of my own and I had doubt I could go back to my own reality. So, with a deep breath, I looked up at him and told him my story.
While it only took a few minutes, it had felt like hours. Just reliving it had been enough to make the old panic rise to the surface. By the time I was finished speaking, I had tears streaming down my cheeks. Beside me, the male let out a quiet huff before bending. Before I could apologize, I found my chin taken in a gentle hold before a warm tongue laved along my cheeks. Staring at him with wide eyes, I felt my heart lurch in my stomach.
Once my cheeks were dry, he pulled back; facing the front yet again. Blushing and more than a little confused, I cleared my throat and tried to push away my intrusive thoughts. Thoughts of whether or not he really was courting me. “Y-you don’t have any questions?” I fished, desperate for anything that would distract me.
“This one believes your words,” he stated, not even blinking.
I could only stare up at him, wondering vaguely when and how I had earned this much trust with this male. “Though, this one is curious about your time. This one wonders how much has changed. If there are still youkai,” he continued, as if sensing I needed something to talk about. Yet, a few of his inquiries were not easily answered. My time was different than Kagome’s and it was doubtful youkai like him had ever existed. I hadn’t told him that I was from a different reality all together and I found myself wondering if I really should.
Sighing, I nibbled my lower lip as I tried to decide what to do. After a few seconds, I made my decision. “I... did not come from the same reality as you...,” I ventured, meeting his eyes when he turned his head to look at me.
“Though, the one I come from is very similar. Its just... in my world, all of this is a story,” I managed, waiting for his reaction.
Brow furrowing, he tilted his head to one side as my words sank in. “This one is naught but a fairytale in your world?” he murmured, a faint frown marring his otherwise perfect features.
“I-I’m afraid so. As far as I know, youkai never existed either,” I responded nervously.
Pursing his lips, the taiyoukai tightened his grip on me until his claws lightly pricked at me through my clothes. “That is why you knew how to act around this one. You have heard about this one before,” he mused, still frowning ever so slightly.
“Tell me about this world of yours. Of the stories your people have told about this one,” came a request that bordered on a demand.
Blinking, I felt myself balk a little. Was telling him any more than I had a good idea? “I... I’m not sure I can. It could change the past,” I whispered, a horrible realization dawning on me. Just my presence was enough to throw things off. Not to mention me helping them with fights. Even now, I was intending to intervene in something I had not originally been a part of. Did I really have a right to say such a thing?
Even Sesshomaru raised a brow, staring down at me as I cleared my throat nervously. “You have already made changes and will continue to do so. What is the harm of a little information,” he countered easily, cornering me like a cat would a mouse with logic alone. Knowing he had me, I licked my lips before giving a small nod.
“A-alright but don’t blame me if you hate what you hear,” I conceded before reluctantly telling him the story of the anime.
By the time I had finished, the sun was setting and we were going down for the night. As we headed down through the canopy of trees, I caught a brief glimpse of what looked to be a dome made of purple gas. Looking up at my companion, I saw a small nod to acknowledge he had noticed it as well. As we grew closer to the ground, he gazed down at me; confusion and an odd emotion shining in his amber gaze. “You have only heard stories about the half-breed, how is it you know this one so well,” he rumbled softly as his cloud touched the grass and disappeared.
Eyes widening at the question, I squirmed out of his grasp to begin gathering material for a fire. After all, how was I supposed to tell him most of my knowledge came from heavily adult stories? Most of them fans of the so-called fairytale? Thankfully, Kilala landing interrupted the conversation. Yet, as Sango and Miroku slid off the fire cat, they were giving me odd looks. It was the same with all the others, the only exception being a certain taiyoukai.
Feeling a touch insecure, I walked toward my friends with confusion on my face. “Why are you all looking at me like that?” I asked, wondering if I had done something wrong by riding with Sesshomaru.
“Oh! Oh, you’ve done nothing wrong, don’t worry,” Kagome assured, immediately running forward to sweep me into a hug.
“That bastard is only nice to Rin, though. Why is he actin’ so weird around you?” Inuyasha piped up, sounding more confused than accusatory.
Kouga let out a bark of laughter, drawing attention to the Wolf Prince. Tail wagging, the royal smirked at them while he crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m not surprised a half-beed and a bunch of humans have no idea what’s going on,” he provoked, raising a brow when Inuyasha drew a transformed Tetsusaiga with a snarl.
“Watch your tongue, wolf,” hissed out a warning while the other male simply chuckled and shook his head.
“Its not my fault you're too blind or stupid to figure out something this obvious. Even the kit knew what was going on,” he continued, his words making me nervous.
What he was implying simply couldn’t be possible. Turning my head to look for Sesshomaru, I saw he had taken a seat at the far end of the clearing. His expression remained neutral despite the fact he could hear every word they said. “What yer sayin’ just doesn’t make any sense! The bastard hates humans! Why the fuck would he court one?!” Inuyasha spat. Kouga simply shook his head in response, refusing to speak anymore on the subject. Of course, this cause the short tempered hanyou to begin yelling. Rolling my eyes, I moved off into the forest to gather firewood as well as think.
There was no possible way the Wolf Prince could be right. Yet, my mind latched onto his words and the strange actions of the Taiyoukai. It was true he had been acting rather odd around me. He really didn’t have to allow me to ride on his youki cloud. Nor did he have to try to comfort me while I was afraid. Not to mention how protective he seemed to be.
Nibbling my lower lip, I fished around for other reasons. There had to be a more reasonable explanation. Maybe this was just how an alpha inu acted with his pack. Still, that didn’t make sense either. He didn’t treat any of the others like me. Only Rin. Frowning, I bent to pick up a stick when I felt like I was being watched. Straightening, I began to look around me; only to find Sesshomaru mere feet behind me.
Nearly jumping out of my skin, I took several steps back while my eyes locked onto his. “What are... Why are..?” I stammered out, his expression as blank as ever.
“This one wanted to ensure your safety,” he stated simply, his words only deepening the strange feelings whirling inside me.
Nodding while a blush colored my cheeks, I went back to my gathering. The entire time, I felt his eyes on me and I couldn’t help but feel more flustered. “I was fine alone. I wasn’t even far from the camp,” I pointed out, hoping to break the odd, tension filled silence between us. Unfortunately, he did not respond. He simply stared, his eyes a deep, warm honey color. It was as if he was trying to tell me something through body language alone. Something I couldn’t or didn’t want to understand.
Licking my suddenly dry lips, I finished gathering what I could to at least start the fire. I would have to come back for fuel. Hefting my light load, I started to head back to camp. To my shock, I found the bundle of kindling and tinder taken out of my arms. It had happened far too fast to see and my gaze moved to the unapologetic culprit. With that maddeningly neutral expression, he held the bundle in his lone arm.
Frowning slightly, the thoughts of him courting me came forward in a rush. Flushing crimson, I shook my head. ‘No, its just not possible! It can’t be!’ she thought to herself in a panic. Trying to distract herself, she began to grab large branches for fuel. A task the Taiyoukai also helped her with, hefting each one over his shoulder. Of course, none of this helped the odd mess of emotions whirling inside me like a tornado.
Hope, fear, disbelief; all of them mixed together. All I wanted to do was just ignore all of this. To just head back to camp and pretend none of this was happening. Falling for him was taboo in his society, not to mention dangerous for my heart. Shaking myself, I pushed all my feelings to the back of my mind. With determination, I began to head back to camp. “Jade,” rumbled from behind me, stopping me in my tracks immediately.
Heart leaping into my throat, the dam around my emotions broke like tissue paper. Shaking, I turned slowly to face him; almost afraid of what was about to happen. “This one requests your presence. Follow this one into the forest later,” purred out of him, his tone oddly gruff despite his blank mask. Legs going weak, it took everything I had to remain standing. Unable to speak, I simply nodded.
Satisfied, he simply waited for me to recover from the shock. Eyes wide, I stiffly turned and made my way back like a zombie. Setting down my buden, I began to start the fire while the others simply stared. None of this was going missed by them. And all of them had varying reactions. Ranging from angry to slightly devious. So, once I got the fire started, I took a seat a bit further away from the group. I was already confused, I didn’t need their questions and assumptions to make it worse.
Sighing, I forced all those thoughts away as I looked up at the stars above me. No matter what happened, we all would be facing Naraku soon enough. Already, there was a faint stink in the air due to getting closer to his territory. This also meant there could be copies watching us. Or his Saimyosho. Even now, they could be hiding in the trees. A presence to my left caught me off guard and I jumped out of my skin before looking up at the blank face of Sesshomaru.
Without warning, he turned on his heel and made his way into the forest. Stunned, I slowly got to my feet before grabbing my weapon. While I doubted Sesshomaru had been manipulated or even replaced, his behavior was very strange. It was better to be safe. With a glance back at the group around the fire, I followed the taiyoukai into the forest. Thankfully, he didn’t lead me far enough away to be suspicious. Just enough to not be easily sighted or stumbled across.
Glancing around the tiny opening in the trees, I could only tilt my head in confusion as he simply took a seat and looked at the sky. Frowning, I hesitantly walked toward him. “Why did you bring me out here?” I asked, curiosity mixing with confusion. I wasn’t too shocked when he did not respond. Instead, he lifted his right leg to make a platform for his only arm to rest on as he kept his eyes skyward.
Huffing out, I turned to go back to camp. “Do not,” came from behind me, the order in the tone unmistakeable. Spinning to face him, I found his animal-like eyes fixed on me. They were a warm, honey color despite his face holding no emotion. Frowning slightly, I watched as he leaned back and began to star watch yet again. Shaking my head, I decided to just go with it. Finding my own tree, I stared up at the twinkled lights above.
Soon, I was so enthralled that I didn’t even notice when he had moved. It was only when I felt a warmth to my left that I figured out he had joined me in my spot. Blushing, I desperately kept my gaze pointed upward. It was safer than thinking about what was happening. About how this was all too much like a date. Heart lodgin in my throat I felt my feelings begin to surge forward.
Hope, fear and my budding love. Overwhelmed, I felt tears slip down my cheeks. A gruff rumble sound before a tongue lapped up the moisture for the second time that day. Then a clawed hand was turning my head so my eyes were meeting his. In the honey colored orbs, their was faint concern as he leaned slowly forward. Then he was pressing his mouth into the corner of my own. Not in a kiss but more of a touch. Almost as if he was trying to tell me something with this gesture.
Unsure of how to respond, I simply sat there as he moved back to meet my gaze steadily. Then, just like that, he was back to the stars. Chuckling at the enigmatic male, I shook my head before gazing upward yet again. For hours, we just sat like that. SImply enjoying nature as well as the other’s company.
