Kagome wasn’t able to sleep long. Her dreams plagued by images of Sesshoumaru ordering her to bed, of Koga and Inuyasha battered and bleeding. Her mind and heart at war with one another and finally she threw her blankets off and pulled her clothing on. Not the fanciful silks that Sesshoumaru preferred her swathed in. No, she chose her long unworn school uniform. Folded and forgotten in the back of her wardrobe.
It was a little more snug than she recalled but she supposed that was to be expected.
She made her way to the infirmary, taking in the sleeping visages of Koga and Inuyasha. She had just pressed a kiss to Koga’s brow, sweeping the inky fall of his hair from his brow.
“Gome?”
She straightened in surprise to fine a bleary eyed Inuyasha staring across the hall at her. She smiled softly and hurried to his side, “How are you feeling?”
He leaned back against the linens at her insistence. “Keh, this is nothing.”
She fixed him with her large dark eyes and he found himself flushing. “What?”
Kagome watched his golden eyes slide from hers to seek Koga and then they snapped back. “I don’t need to be here.” He said finally.
“Inuyasha you were both torn up when you came back. You need help!”
Inuyasha caught the scent of Sesshoumaru on her again, closer than casual touching. She was all but wrapped, cloaked in the overbearing scent of alpha. Being an alpha himself, this rankled Inuyasha on a primal level.
“I don’t need a damn thing from him.” He growled at her, a low dangerous sound.
Kagome, long used to his tantrums sat still in his storm.
“He is just trying to help Inuyasha.”
“How?” he snapped, “By taking you, by holding up our search while he treats you like property?”
Kagome bristled, “Inuyasha”
“And you…” he went on, “You like it. I can tell. “
“I do not.”
“You can lie to Miroku and Sango but not me. I can smell you.”
She flushed crimson.
“Not that long ago it was my scent all over you. But not how his is. He’s scent marking you, you know that. Your own scent blossoms when he’s near.”
She shook her head, “I don’t… like it” she ground out. It wasn’t a lie, she toppled between fearing and craving it.
He pinned her with a gimlet stare, “You do! You do, or you’d have come back by now.”
“I made a promise!”
“You made one to me too!”
“I know that Inuyasha, I haven’t broken it.”
“Aren’t you though? Come on Kagome. Whose side are you on? Whose side are you at?”
She stood abruptly. “I would have died Inuyasha.” She said in a hard voice that made the soft white triangles of his ears clamp against his skull. “You understand that don’t you? Dead. Not coming back. Not even as a shell. Not like Kikyo. Gone. Forever.”
She turned from him, feeling the hot rush of tears prick her eyes.
“Don’t do that” he rasped, trying to sit up, feeling the pull and burn of wounds still healing, bones still knitting. “I hate it when you cry…”
“Then why make me?” she said.
Inuyasha had the good grace to look uncomfortable, not that Kagome could see. “Because… I feel like.. you …aren’t mine….anymore.”
The words were hard fought to pass his lips, but he managed. Meaning everyone, even as they carved into him deeper than red hot talons.
Kagome stiffened. For so long she wanted such words, had prayed for them. Now… they did not fill her with joy, or euphoria. No, they didn’t even bring warmth. She looked over her shoulder at him then, eyes bright with tears. Droplets glittering on her lashes like tiny gems.
“Because I’m not” she heard herself say. “I’m mine.”
She was gone before Inuyasha could struggled from his bed, her scent, sweet and soft, Sesshoumaru, and tears fading into the crisp scent of night.
Inuyasha had just sank back to sit on his low bed when the doors flew open and an angry Sesshoumaru entered the room.
“What have you done?”
Inuyasha glared up at his half-brother. “Nothing like you have… asshole.”
“Explain.”
“You hate humans. You tried to kill her. You don’t want her. She’s a game to play against me. That’s what you want right? Break her and leave her. Laugh in your castle?”
Sesshoumaru lashed out, his hand grasping Inuyasha’s throat in a powerful fist. “You have no idea what I want.” He growled out. His tone low and rumbling and Inuyasha wondered for a small moment if he had really fucked himself this time.
“I heard most of what you said to her.” Sesshoumaru went on. “The only reason you are still breathing it because she would wish it, and I may have use for you yet. Make no mistake Inuyasha, I fervently wait the day both of those circumstances change.”
“For crying out loud, can’t a demon even heal in peace?” Koga griped from across the all. “Knock it off ladies.”
Both inus turned to glare at him, “Silence wolf.” Sesshoumaru snarled and even locked in his tight grasp Inuyasha nodded.
Koga grunted and forced himself to unsteady feet.
“Hey idiot, lay down before you die.” Inuyasha grumped.
“Well someone has to go after her.” Koga snarked, his face ashen white, his brow dotted with sweat.
Inuyasha furrowed his brow in confusion but Sesshoumaru had released him and was already out the door.
“Hey dick! I thought we were gonna beat the shit out of each other!”
He felt the bowl of herb water from Koga’s bedside connect with his face and scowled. “Shut up Inuyasha, lay down like a good puppy. He will find her.”
“What?”
“Thanks to your big mouth, Kagome has fled the fortress. Not sure how she got past the guard but it’s your fault.”
Inuyasha opened his mouth to retort, but Koga’s blue glare silenced him. “Grow up.”
~~~
Sesshoumaru wondered how the hell she had gotten so far in such a small amount of time. He was gliding over the trees, eyes scanning for her. Nose scenting the wind as it rushed past him. He had been searching for nearly an hour when the scent came.
Sharp, yet sweet, cloying. Metallic.
Blood. Kagome’s blood. Priestess powers.
With a snarl, Sesshoumaru allowed himself to curl into his sphere and accelerate.
~~~
Kagome panted as she ran. This was the most epically stupid idea she had ever had. She had no idea where she was. She remembered approaching the gate of the fortress and looking up at the stars. Willing herself to be anywhere but here. Her emotions were roiling and she wanted to scream, cry, vomit, punch something. Maybe a specific someone. Maybe two specific someones for putting her in this mess.
There had been a great flash of pink light as her miko powers rose up and engulfed her. She had shouted warnings to the demon guards but then the light was gone and she was in the forest.
“Hello!?” she called.
It was silent. Not even insects sang.
And Kagome knew, that was not a good thing.
She took a moment to look around her, tried to gain her bearings. It did no good.
She closed her eyes and tried willing herself back to the fortress. Maybe that would work.
She felt a prickle of awareness along her spine and opened her eyes and she held her breath.
Movement. She heard movement. Something big was making its way toward her. Kagome didn’t want to find out what it was. She listened again. Faintly, she heard water.
She spun and raced towards it. She had no bow, no weapon. But in the water, she might be able to hide. Mask her scent. Inuyasha had once told her he used that trick as a child. She’d take what she could get.
She ran through the trees, uncaring of the tearing branches that snapped and whipped at her arms and legs, that tore her hair and scratched her face. She promised herself that she would care later. And she would verbally berate herself thoroughly then. For now, she had only one priority.
To escape.
She ran until her side ached and her breath wouldn’t come. And still she ran. She resisted the urge to look behind her. She’d seen American horror flicks she knew how it worked. You looked, you tripped, you fell and the killer caught you.
But what if it was right behind her? She was so tired?
She dared looking back a moment later, seeing nothing.
Then she slammed into something large and hard and fell backwards, tasting blood in her mouth.
“Ow.”
She blinked up to see a tall demon. He had to be, for he was terrifyingly beautiful, and radiated malicious power.
“I’m sorry” she blurted out, “I wasn’t looking where I was going.” Perhaps she could reason with him.
His ruby hued eyes locked on her then, “Of course you weren’t” he said pleasantly, extending his hand to her, “You were clearly running for safety.”
Kagome blinked and pushed herself to her feet, ignoring his hand. Maybe he wasn’t so bad.
“You don’t have to run anymore” he assured her in a gentle voice.
“I don’t?” Kagome asked.
He shook his head, his smooth golden hair falling back into perfect place. “Not at all. You see what you were running from was never really following behind you.”
Unease crept into her. “It wasn’t?” she whispered.
He smiled then, and it wasn’t a nice smile at all. “No. It’s been ahead of you, waiting for you to bolt.”
She backed up a step from him and he followed suit.
“And now I have you. Shikon Miko.”
She narrowed her eyes bravely, “I won’t help you find jewel shards mister.”
He chuckled at that, “I don’t need you for that.”
“Wh..what then?”
He leaned closer, “I want to kill the house of the west.”
Sesshoumaru. Inuyasha. Enoa.
“Then what do you need me for?”
He pressed his nose to her hair and inhaled deeply. “You smell of them. The eldest is stronger. Scent marking you. Archaic. And completely disgusting in that you are a human.”
Kagome glowered at the demon before her.
“Again.” She growled, “Why do you need a disgusting human then?”
He affectionately cupped her cheek. “Oh don’t mistake me. Humans are fine as toys and pets and food. But you are…different. You are special to him. I know that his heat nears, already he fights against it. The forests of the west bear the marks of rage and failing control. Demons are dangerous at this time, but also vulnerable. Even the great Sesshoumaru will be mindless to his biological imperative.”
Kagome choked on air, “You wanna kill him while he’s…erm…well”
The demon waved her words away. “No. He can rut until his heart is content, then when he is physically exhausted. Then, and only then, will I kill him.”
“You’re sick”
“I’m smart” he argued, “He is far too dangerous to challenge at any other time.”
“You aren’t powerful enough you mean.”
He eyed her for a moment, “There are few who could challenge him at all, I am among that number but I would prefer to not be…damaged… by him again.”
“You fought him before?”
“Ages ago”
“And?”
‘That’s enough” he commanded, “I’ve need to bring him here.”
“He’s in the fortress.”
Those glittering eyes traced her features. “He is not. My apologies little miko. None of what I do is personal against you. Though it may feel that way.” Then he chuckled softly.
Kagome blinked as his hand raised and his claws sliced her from shoulder to hip. She cried out then and he released her. Pointing over her shoulder he stated, ‘The river lies that direction. Run.”
And she did. But the hot blood from her wound was sliding against her flesh, making her clothing wet and heavy. Her body ached and she was afraid. Afraid that she was dying. Afraid this strange demon would succeed.
Her run was now a stumbling staggering walk. She’d barely made it 300 meters. Her wounds were going numb, but moving was difficult. Her vision was spotting. She glimpsed the river just ahead and made it to the water’s edge. She collapsed face down, the world narrowing to a pinpoint of light. With her last vestiges of strength, she thought of how sorry she was, and how twisted the demon’s plan was.
She wished she could warn Sesshoumaru.
Wondered if he really was coming for her.
Didn’t matter did it?
Yes, she told herself it mattered.
This was death she decided, dark and cool and calm. But death was getting loud she thought. Was it roaring?
Then slowly, the pinpoint tightened and vanished.
