Sesshoumaru awoke to the smell of InuYasha filling his nose. He almost choked with the intensity of it after so long of separation. It was in his throat, his lungs…Hell, if felt like it’s somehow crept under his skin. Frowning, he sat up. The past week had been a blur of sex and uncharacteristically caring promises. How many times had he and InuYasha sworn to stay with each other? To treat each other right? How many times had he asked his brother to confirm that as soon as the heat was over, he was going to come home? What happened to me? The heat has always made me a bit more emotional but that…that was excessive. He looked down at the sleeping Hanyou, whose head was in his lap and felt his chest clench.
Yawning, he stretched, every muscle and joint popping from days of staying on the cement floor of the storage unit InuYasha had chosen as his sanctuary. They were never doing that again. Give him his nice, comfy bed any day. He looked down at his own body, wincing. Not only was he covered in bruises and red marks from their rather passionate sex, but his body was covered in dried semen, sweat, and saliva. All in all, he felt absolutely disgusting. He almost got up right there, threw on his clothes, and went home to take a shower, leaving InuYasha to follow whenever he woke up, but then he glanced down at his brother. The half-demon had a small, peaceful smile on his face as he pillowed his head on Sesshoumaru’s right thigh, his arm looped around the elder’s leg securely.
“Ah, screw it…” he muttered, settling back down to wait for the boy to wake up. If I left without him, he probably wouldn’t come back, he rationalized belatedly. I guess I can endure this discomfort for a while, at least. An involuntary smile tugged at his lips as he stared down at the boy – one which he promptly banished. But he couldn’t suppress the warmth in his chest. His brother shifted, rolling off his lap and effectively freeing him to get up and get some clothes on. Once that was done, he half-way dressed InuYasha and picked him up. “Let’s go home,” he murmured, carrying the half-demon off.
InuYasha nuzzled his face into Sesshoumaru’s chest as he let them into their home, kicking the door shut behind them. He hesitated at the top of the stairs before deciding to go to his own room. He gently laid InuYasha on his bed and slipped away to get a rag. When he returned, the boy had smothered himself in his pillow, wrapping his arms around it and hugging it close to bury his face in his brother’s scent. The demon easily undressed his brother and wiped him down with the warm rag, marveling at his ability to stay asleep. Last he remembered, InuYasha was a light sleeper. Guess I really wore him out, he thought with a rueful smile as he tiptoed off to get a shower.
InuYasha awoke to find himself on a bed. He blinked and sat up, rubbing his eyes. He was in Sesshoumaru’s room. Did he bring me here? Where is he? He yawned and stretched as his still-groggy senses registered the sound of the shower running. He felt like he was in a dream. Standing, he looked down at himself and noticed he was mostly clean. Does that mean he wiped me down? He headed towards the bathroom and tapped on the door.
“Come in!” his brother’s rich, silky baritone called. He opened the door and stepped into the steam-filled bathroom, shutting the door quickly behind him to preserve the heat.
“Um…you brought me home while I was sleeping,” he commented.
“Well spotted. It was rather uncomfortable in that storage unit,” Sesshoumaru replied. “And we were disgusting. I needed a shower.”
“Oh. Thank you. Um…” InuYasha shifted from foot to foot nervously. Does he remember all the things we said this past week? Does he blame it on the heat and want to pretend like it never happened? But if he did, then he wouldn’t have brought me here. But then…then what does he expect? I mean, a lot has changed between us so…so what do I do?”
“Stop worrying so much. if you think any harder, you’ll give yourself a headache,” Sesshoumaru spoke up. “Come here.”
“What?”
“You want to shower, right? That’s why you’re in here? Get in the shower, then.” Uncertainly, the half-demon took a half-step forward. Why had he come into the bathroom? Sesshoumaru pushed open the curtain, reached out, and grabbed InuYasha’s arm, pulling him forward. He got into the shower obediently, staring at his toes to avoid looking at Sesshoumaru. This was the first time not during the heat that he’d Seen Sesshoumaru completely naked. “It’s nothing you haven’t already seen,” Sesshoumaru commented.
“B-but…does the heat count…?” InuYasha protested weakly. The older demon frowned, confused. “I mean…a-aren’t we going to pretend like this past week didn’t happen, like we did last time?” he explained. Warm, slender fingers came up under his chin, tilting his face up, forcing him to meet Sesshoumaru’s gaze.
“No, InuYasha. I made some promises to you, and I am a man of word. I promised to treat you well – like a legitimate member of my pack. Like my brother. I don’t intend to go back on that. The fact is that this past week is perfectly normal and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Why should we ignore it?” The older brother sounded confident though in truth he was trying more to convince himself than his brother. He’s a half-demon. He’s the spawn of that bitch that was responsible for father’s death! But…but I was miserable without him. No matter how much I try, I can’t deny the fact that this past year has been the worst of my life.
“What made you change your mind about me?” the half-demon asked softly. “Did you miss me or something?” The older brother stared at him, trying to figure out how to reply. The longer he waited, it seemed, the more confidence InuYasha got. “You know, right there is your problem, Aniki.” Sesshoumaru frowned.
“What?”
“You’re so worried about being vulnerable. You’re so intent on being strong an impenetrable that you can’t even be honest with yourself about how you feel or what you think. You’re so set on the idea that caring is weakness that you won’t allow yourself to feel anything. Not even demons believe that anymore. And you’ve spent so long avoiding the truth that you can’t even tell how you really feel!”
“Inu-”
“And I know that you got hurt badly when our father died. I know it must’ve been extremely painful, but can’t you see that all you’re doing now is hurting yourself and the people around you? You’ve been trying so hard to protect yourself that you’ve turned yourself into an ass, and you’re driving everyone away from you.”
“InuYa-”
“Can’t you see that being alone is painful no matter what, even if it’s on your own terms? Instead of blocking everyone out, give yourself a chance to trust, again. And maybe it will mess up and maybe it will hurt in the end, but isn’t it better to have a chance than guaranteeing your own misery? Our kind aren’t made to be alone. You aren’t made to be alone!”
“InuYasha!” Sesshoumaru cut him off. The younger brother shut his mouth abruptly. “You’ve…made your point. The truth is…that you’re right. I have no idea what I’m feeling. Not on a deeper level anyways. I’m limited to knowing what I want and what I don’t. What feels good and what doesn’t. So all I can tell you is that I want you here and this past year has hurt to the point of physical pain at times.” He exhaled forcefully. “I know I promised things would change, Yasha, but it’s going to take time to figure out how to handle this.”
“H-how to handle what?”
“How to handle how I feel…how to figure out what I feel. And how to properly convey that feeling to you. Just don’t…rush me.”
“O-oh. Okay. Thank you for bringing me back and not waking me up.”
“I wasn’t sure you’d come back, if I just left you.”
“You could’ve woken me up.”
“You looked tired. I didn’t want to wake you up.”
“May I…um…touch you?”
“What?” InuYasha leaned in on him, resting his head on the older brother’s chest, his eyes fluttering shut.
“Just like this.”
“S-sure. Why?”
“I missed being with people, Sessh. I’ve always been an outsider, but that doesn’t mean I can’t feel alone when I’ve lost the one person that really…had a connection with me. We’re brothers…part of the same pack…whether either of us likes it or not. Even being with Bankotsu and them…there was no connection like there was with you, even if they liked me more and wanted me around more. Call it instinct or whatever you want to dismiss it, but despite all that’s happened between us, being with you is comforting. Touching you, feeling your aura, hearing your voice…when you’re not trying to rip my throat out, it’s really…soothing.”
“I have never tried to rip your throat out, InuYasha,” Sesshoumaru mumbled. Even he wasn’t that bad. Sure, he’d been tempted to beat him to a bloody pulp on numerous, and he actually had knocked him unconscious a handful of times, he had never really considered actually killing his brother.
“You get the idea.”
“Perhaps, but legally that could be a very misconstruing comment.”
“Sessh…no one’s charging anyone with anything. We’re not in front of a court. Hell, we don’t even have clothes on. I was—oh never mind.” The two of them lapsed into silence, each listening to the rhythm of water hitting skin and trying to find some way to ease the awkwardness between them. “Um…I’m sorry too, you know?”
“Why?”
“Well, I mean, it wasn’t all the time, but I did things that I knew upset you. I mean…I didn’t ever do anything…to make the situation worse. And running away…probably wasn’t a good idea,” he explained, though he wasn’t sure what other options he’d had. I could’ve just put up with him longer…
“InuYasha. I was cruel, abusive, and all together an unfit guardian. I’m lucky you didn’t call the police. I didn’t give you many options but to leave.” InuYasha was stunned. Sesshoumaru was admitting he was in the wrong? This was a moment to be remembered for sure. Abruptly, the older brother turned off the water. “Okay, shower’s done.” He got out and grabbed a towel from the linen closet, drying off as he headed back to his room. InuYasha got out much more slowly, still trying to process everything that had happened. He’d been certain that when he woke up, he was going to be alone in that storage unit, cold and lonely. What does this mean? I mean…we’re brothers…who screw each other once a year. He bit his lip. How do I act with him now? I mean, is he going to be all warm and family-like…I seriously doubt it. It’s unlikely he’ll want to have breakfast together every morning or spend a lot of time together, but when we are together, what should I say, how should I act? I mean we’re not going to avoid each other are we? He grabbed a towel, rubbing himself down.
Suddenly, the phone rang. Startled from his thoughts, he wrapped the towel around his waist and jogged down to the hall to answer it. He hesitated with his hand on the phone, wondering who could be calling and why. It was probably a business call for Sesshoumaru, so should he let him get it? No, he used his cell-phone for that. Then it was probably a telemarketer or something. He answered.
“Hello?” There was silence on the other end of the receiver. “Okay, if this is a prank call, I’m hanging up, and for your own sake, don’t do it again.”
“Wait!” Miroku’s voice came through the phone. “I-InuYasha?! Is that you? Where were you? What happened to you?”
“Wh-why are you calling my brother?”
“Looking for you of course! Do you have any idea how worried I was?! Where were you? Wait! I’m coming over right now! And I expect some answers when I get there!” The phone clicked as his friend hung up. InuYasha put the phone down. Of course, he hadn’t really considered his friends’ worry. He’d always just assumed they’d forget about him, if he disappeared. How often does he call? Monthly? Weekly? He wouldn’t call daily, would he? He suddenly felt guilty. I wonder if Sesshoumaru was worried about me, too.
Ten minutes later, there was a knock on the door. Sesshoumaru was already halfway down the stairs to answer it before InuYasha could pull himself out of his thoughts to make his way down the hall. The demon lord opened the door.
“Monk. What are you-?”
“Is InuYasha there?! I know he is! Let me in! Let me talk to him!” Miroku interrupted him, trying to force his way past.
“Calm down, human! InuYasha is here. He’s fine,” Sesshoumaru snapped, stepping out of the way and shutting the door behind the monk. InuYasha found himself toppled to the ground as his friend jumped on him, embracing him.
“I was so scared! You just disappeared! I thought I was never going to see you again! I thought you were kidnapped or dead or something! It was awful! How long have you been back?! Why didn’t you call me?!”
“Slow down,” InuYasha said, sitting up as Sesshoumaru went back upstairs without a word. “I’m fine. Really. I just…needed some time away. I’m sorry for not calling or anything. It was wrong of me to make you worry. And I just got back this morning. I’d just gotten out of the shower when you called. If you haven’t noticed, I’m only wearing a towel.” He stood up, helping Miroku to his feet.
“O-oh. I see. Well…I’m glad you’re okay and back and everything. Where have you been?”
“On the streets.”
“You could’ve come to live with me, you know!”
“Well, I didn’t. And I’m back now. And I don’t plan on leaving again any time soon.”
“Are you sure that maybe you shouldn’t just come live with me and my family? I mean…if Sesshoumaru-”
“It’s fine. I don’t know exactly where he and I stand right now, but…it’s better than before. He’s the one that actually came to get me and bring me home.”
“…Okay. If you say it’s fine…”
“It is. I guess I’ll be a year behind you in school now…I mean, it’s almost the end of the school year, so I probably won’t even bother joining this year.”
“Yeah. Well, at least then I can help you with studying if you need it. You should call Kagome and Kikyo and Sango. They were really worried too.”
“I’ll call them later today.”
“So what have you been doing?”
“I ran with a gang for a while. It’s-”
“A gang?! God, InuYasha that’s…!”
“Calm down. It’s fine. And it’s over. Can we not…talk about me? What about you? I mean, other than worrying, what have you been up to?”
“Well, school…umm…nothing unusual. Oh, Sango and I started dating, but we don’t go out very often.”
“Congrats on finally getting her to agree to go out with you.”
“Why don’t you get dressed. We can go out to eat and catch up over breakfast, if you haven’t had any yet.”
“Um, sure. Let me ask Sesshoumaru.” He went upstairs and tapped on Sesshoumaru’s door. “Um…Nii-san?”
“Yes?”
“Can I go out for breakfast with Miroku?” There was a moment of silence as the demon thought over his answer. Part of him wanted to say no and kick Miroku out before pinning InuYasha down and screwing him senseless, and the other part of him wanted the boy to just leave so he could think in peace.
“Sure. Here…your necklace.” He opened the door and handed the teen his necklace. “Have fun.” His younger brother flashed him a smile though it was clearly a bit forced.
“Thanks. You too.” He went to his room to get changed, Sesshoumaru’s words – or rather his tone – echoing over and over in his head. He’d sounded so…kind, compared to usual. There was no malice or distrust or frustration in his voice. Just a simple “have fun” as if he really meant it. The half-demon couldn’t wrap his head around it. How did Sesshoumaru adjust so fast? He came downstairs. “Okay, let’s go.” Miroku grinned and they left.
