“What’s wrong, dear?” Asami asked as Kagome pushed her food around rather than eating it.
She shrugged. “I guess I’m just not really hungry, Mama. I think, I think I’m going to get some fresh air.”
She pushed away from the table and headed for the door. InuYasha watched her go, sensing that she needed a little time to herself. Her mother looked at him in askance. He laid his chopsticks down across his bowl and sat back. The truth was that he wasn’t very hungry either. No matter what he had said to her he still felt that faint sense of resignation coming from her and he didn’t like it, not one fucking bit.
“Today, it was bad,” he said quietly. “Definitely one of the worst things either one of us has ever seen. A lot of people had been killed and that bastard trapped their souls too. Kagome, she freed them, but a part of her feels like it’s her fault.”
Asami frowned. She knew that it must have been truly awful, especially since she was certain that InuYasha was censoring himself due to the presence of Souta and Jii-chan. “How terrible. I wish there was something we could do.”
“Naraku left her a message,” he continued. “He wants the jewel and her. He wants her to become Kikyou and then for me to watch while he severs the mating bond with her. If she doesn’t then he’s going to keep killing people.”
Everyone at the table stared at him with wide eyes and Asami grabbed his hand. “You can’t be considering it, letting my baby go to that monster?”
“Keh, hell no, I ain’t considering,” he told her. “But she is and that’s the real problem. Maybe I’m a terrible person, but I don’t give a shit how many people he kills. He’s not getting her, not ever, but that’s not the kind of guilt she can live with.”
“I see,” Asami said quietly. “Her empathy is such a heavy burden at times, isn’t it?”
“I’d carry the guilt for her if she’d let me,” he said. “I’ll force her to, if I have to, even if she hates me for it. You want to help then you can help me keep an eye on her so that she can’t run off and do something stupid.”
“What if she’s gone right now?” Souta asked.
“Don’t worry kid, she’s not far,” he replied. “I can feel her.” His brow furrowed. “She’s in the Haiden, I think.”
“Kagome in the Haiden?” jii-chan questioned. “I don’t think she’s gone in there since Dai was killed.”
~ * ~
Kagome walked around the inside of the Haiden, letting herself think about the last time she had stepped foot inside. She had never prayed as hard for anything in her life as she had that day for her Daddy to live. She had even dumped all the money from her piggy bank into the offering box, but her father had still died. Of course, she had prayed since then, many times, and most of those had been for InuYasha to live, to be happy, but never again in the Haiden.
It wasn’t like she blamed the Kami-sama of anyone else for the death of her father. It had been an accident, just one of those things, but some part of her hadn’t been able to stomach the thought of going into the building, not during any of the festivals or holidays, or even on the New Year. She had instead turned to the sacred tree that their shrine was built around to focus her hopes and her prayers.
Now, she wondered if she hadn’t been drawn to The Goshinboku because it was the link between her world and InuYasha’s. Maybe even back then her destiny had been calling to her across the ages, or maybe the peace she had felt under the great tree had really been his soul connecting with hers.
She pulled the sacred jewel out of her shirt and held in her hand as she moved around the room. She wondered what her father would say if she had been able to tell him about Naraku and the jewel and everything else. Would be proud of her for not giving in to Naraku or would he be disappointed that she wasn’t more selfless?
If only she could figure out how to purify the jewel then everything would be so much easier. She couldn’t give Naraku what she didn’t have and the choice would be out of her hands. She sighed. Did wishing for that make her a coward?
InuYasha would never agree to let her give herself to Naraku, not even if the whole world was falling to pieces around them. She had no illusions about the value he placed on her life. She was the most important thing in his world. He would rather be dead than see her in the hands of their greatest enemy, and the truth was that she would rather be dead than end up controlled by Naraku, but could she really be that selfish with her life?
She grabbed one of the folding chairs and placed it in the middle of the room. She sat down with the jewel in her hands and closed her eyes, praying for guidance, for courage, and for hope.
“I wish, I just wish that the shikon no tama would disappear from this world forever,” she said quietly.
~ * ~
InuYasha jumped up from the table and ran towards the Haiden. He could feel the power of the Shikon no Tama, pulsing and prayed that Kagome was okay, that she hadn’t made some stupid, selfless wish in hopes of protecting him and everyone else.
He used one hand to shield his eyes from the light shining in the center of the room. He could just make out Kagome sitting there, the source of the light in her hands. As he approached the jewel in her hands burst into a cloud of dust and the light faded.
He raced to her side. “Kagome, are you okay?”
She looked at him and then back at her hands. “It’s gone. It’s really gone. Midoriko, she thanked me for setting her free.”
“How?” he questioned as he ran his hands down her arms reassuring himself that she hadn’t been harmed.
“I don’t know, really,” she replied. “I just wished for the jewel to disappear forever and then it did. I didn’t mean for it to happen, not really, though I hoped. Does that make me a coward, for not wanting to have face making the decision about Naraku and the jewel?”
He snorted. “There ain’t a cowardly bone in your body, Kagome. All that makes you is smart enough to realize that no good could ever come from the Shikon no Tama. I’m glad you found a way to destroy it.”
She relaxed as he wrapped his arms around her. “Me too.”
InuYasha released her as someone cleared their throat from the entrance to the Haiden. He stood and offered Kagome his hand to help her to her feet. Her whole family was standing there, having followed him out after his hasty departure.
“So the Shikon no Tama was purified by the correct wish, just as the legend foretold,” Jii-chan said.
Kagome nodded. “It’s definitely gone for good.”
“At least that’s one less thing for you to have to worry about,” Souta offered.
“Let’s go back in and finish dinner,” Asami said. Souta and Jii-chan nodded and headed back towards the house. Asami followed but stopped and glanced back at her daughter. “And, dear, don’t even think about giving yourself to that monster. You are not responsible for his actions no matter what he may be trying to imply with his blackmail.”
Kagome just blinked at her mother’s retreating back. “You told her about today?” She turned to him, her temper up. “How could you tell her about that? You think I want her knowing something to horrible?”
“Calm down, woman,” he told her. “I didn’t give her any details. I just told her it was bad and about the trapped souls and what Naraku wanted. They were worried about you.”
She took a slow breath and wrapped her arms around his middle. “I’m sorry. I guess everything that has happened just has me a little on edge. I shouldn’t take that out on you, not when you’ve been so wonderful.”
“Keh, I figure you owe me a few for all the times I took shit out on you that wasn’t your fault,” he said. “Now, you ready to go in a eat something?”
She nodded and then squealed as he lifted her from her feet. “I can walk, you know.”
“Maybe I like carrying you. Did you ever think of that?” he asked. “But if you really want me to put you down I will.”
She shook her head and then rested it on his shoulder. “That’s okay. I like it when you carry me too.”

Once dinner was finished and the dishes done, Kagome went to rescue InuYasha from Souta. Though, perhaps rescue wasn’t the right word, since she could feel that her hanyou was enjoying playing games with her brother in his room. She knew it was less the video games and more being a part of a family that he liked, but why he was happy didn’t matter; only that he was.
She peeked her head in the door and watched them for a few minutes. “Hey, can I have my husband back now?”
She was delighted as InuYasha blushed and she had to admit her own face felt a little warm. It was strange and wonderful to call him that. She let him feel all the emotions that one word brought to life within her and his embarrassment disappeared, only to be replaced with another emotion entirely. He definitely liked being her husband.
InuYasha stood up and handed the controller to Souta. “Sorry kid.”
“Can’t you just tell sis to wait?” Souta asked with a whine. “You’re the man. She should do what you want.”
“Souta!” Kagome cried. “What kind of thing is that to say?”
InuYasha chuckled. “You’ll understand one day that it’s never a good idea to keep your wife waiting when she wants your attention, and that saying stuff like she should do what I want because I’m the man is hazardous to your health,” InuYasha told him. “We’ll do this again soon.”
He guided Kagome out of the doorway with a hand on her back, mostly to say her little brother from her ire. He knew he had been as clueless as the kid was about women not too long ago. He was still pretty clueless but at least he knew better than to say being the man meant Kagome should obey him. He might never recover from what she would do to him for saying something like that.
“Gah, I can’t believe he said that,” she muttered. “Honestly. I should tell, Mama. She’d have him doing the dishes for the rest of his life.”
He pulled her back against him and nuzzled her neck. “Go easy on him, my mate. He’s young and stupid, but he’ll figure it out when some girl takes pity on him and helps him see how it really is. Sound like anyone you know?”
She laughed. “Maybe a little, but you had more of an excuse. You’re from a different time, where women were regarded differently than they are now.”
“Men are men no matter what time they live in,” he replied. “Cut him some slack, for me?”
“Okay, for you,” she agreed as she leaned back into him. “But he’d better learn quickly or I won’t be held responsible. Now, I was hoping you’d take a bath with me. Mama is going to change the water tomorrow and I won’t make it too hot.”
He frowned. “I’m all for bathing with you, but you sure your bath is big enough?”
“Not the one up stairs, the family bath downstairs,” she told him taking his hand and leading him down the hall. She opened the door and pulled him inside. “See. Have you really never been in here before?”
“It’s not like I went snooping through your house when I was here,” he told her. “I never had a reason to look in this room before.”
“Well, it’s your house now too,” she said as she went over to the tub and turned on the hot water to heat the bath.
She stood back up and went back over to him to help him out of his clothes and to let him help her out of hers. By the time they had both rinsed off in the shower area the water was well heated. She turned off the faucet and he held her hand as she stepped over the side to enter the water and then he joined her.
“It’s not too hot?” she asked.
He shook his head, and then reached for her. She blushed but moved to straddle his lap. He slipped his hand behind her neck and drew her into a kiss. Her hands gripped his shoulders as she let her love for him fill her heart and spill over into him through their bond. Now that the Shikon no Tama was gone, the weight of it lifted from her shoulders she was somehow less afraid of what was to come. As long as she and InuYasha were together she had nothing to fear.
“There you are,” he breathed as he felt the change in her thoughts through the bond between them. “I missed you, my Kagome.”
She didn’t have to ask what he meant. “Can you forgive me for forgetting?”
“I could forgive you for anything,” he told her. “But I’m glad you’re back.”
“Me too,” she admitted with a blush as she captured her lower lip between her teeth. “Now, how about you show me just how glad you really are.”
He smirked at her. “I can definitely do that, woman.”
~ * ~
By the time they got out the water was cool and much of it was on the floor, but she couldn’t seem to make herself care as she mopped it up with a towel while InuYasha got dressed. She stood up pleased to find that he had put on the modern clothes she had laid out for him rather than his fire rat. She put a hand on his chest and leaned up to kiss him before putting on her own clothes.
“Don’t get me wrong, you look great, but I don’t get why we’re wearing this stuff when we are just going to go to bed,” he told her as she looked at herself in the mirror.
“I was hoping that we could go out,” she told him. “Anything could happen with Naraku and with the jewel gone I just feel like celebrating a little before we have to try and decide how to deal with him. If you’d rather not, I’ll understand.”
“I’m already dressed, so we might as well,” he said offhandedly.
She let out a happy sound and threw her arms around his neck, kissing him soundly. “I have the best husband, the best mate, ever.”
“Keh, ‘bout time you realized that,” he teased.
“Jerk,” she said, slapping his arm playfully.
“Oi, woman, it’s only fitting since I have the best mate, the best wife, ever,” he told her.
She hugged him tightly. “You really have gotten good at saying the right thing, haven’t you? I guess we’ll have to find a ramen stand. I don’t think you’ve ever had it fresh.”
After getting her hanyou some fresh ramen, which he declared his new favorite food, they headed for the movie theater. She was smiling as they walking having what amounted to her first real date with InuYasha. She was a little concerned that it would be too loud for him, but hoped the bandana over his ears would help with that. Her fingers brushed his and he glanced at her hooking them together briefly before releasing them.
“Stay here and I’ll get the tickets,” she told him as they reached their destination.
She didn’t want to drag him over into the heart of the crowd when it wasn’t necessary. She looked at the time and then which films were going to be starting soon and ended up picking an action movie, she figured InuYasha wouldn’t be too bored with. It wouldn’t have been her first choice but she cared more about just being out with him than she did about the movie. She turned from the counter and bumped right into someone, hard.
“I’m so sorry.” “Please excuse me.”
She lifted her head and found herself looking into such familiar eyes that she was momentarily unable to speak. They were the wrong color and surely it was impossible but she would have sworn that it was Miroku’s soul behind those eyes looking back at her.
“You are so familiar,” he said. “Have we perhaps met before?”
“Kouta, how many times have I told you to quit saying stuff like that to unsuspecting girls,” a young woman said as she approached. “She doesn’t have any idea that you are just teasing her.”
“I assure you, Ayako, that isn’t the case this time,” he replied. “Besides the rather intimidating gentleman behind her most likely wouldn’t appreciate any jokes of that nature directed at her.”
“Keh, damn right I wouldn’t,” InuYasha said with a snort.
“Can you feel it?” Kagome asked quietly discreetly slipping her hand into his.
“Yeah,” he replied, giving her hand a squeeze.
“Allow me to introduce myself,” the man said. “My name is Saisaki Kouta and this lovely lady beside me is my fiancé Yoshida Ayako.”
“For the last time, I haven’t said yes yet,” Ayako snapped, but her cheeks were pink and she was smiling.
“But you will,” Kouta said offhandedly.
Kagome gave a short bow. “I’m Kagome, and this is my husband Inoue InuYasha.”
“See, Aya-chan, we aren’t the only ones who are considering such a thing so young,” Kouta said. “Perhaps it was fate our meeting tonight. She is rather reluctant to accept my proposal since we’ve only just finished our first year at University. What movie are you seeing? If our showtimes match up then maybe after we could all go for desert and you can help me convince her that it is possible to have found the person you are meant to spend your life with at our age.”
“What kind of thing is that to say to total strangers,” Ayako asked. “They probably think you’re some kind of weirdo now.”
“It’s okay Yoshida-san, it would actually be nice to spend time with another young couple,” Kagome said. “Besides Saisaki-san is right, it does feel like we’ve met before, even though I am certain we haven’t. Maybe it was meant to happen.”
Ayako rolled her eyes and sighed in a long suffering way. She looked to InuYasha. “I suppose it would just be easier to go along with these two than try to fight it. At least that has been my experience when Kouta gets an idea in his head.”
InuYasha chuckled. “That has been my experience with Kagome too.”
Kagome smiled at Kouta who winked at her. “It’s settled then. We’ll meet right here when our movies are over.”
They left each other headed into their respective movies and Kagome couldn’t help but feel like everything was going to be okay. Surely finding the reincarnations of their best friends was a good omen for their future. She took a seat near the middle of the back row of the theater and InuYasha sat down beside her. She held pushed up the arm rest between them and held his hand.
Kagome leaned towards her hand, her head resting on his shoulder. “He found her, just like he said he would. You don’t mind do you, that I said we would meet them after?”
“No. I know they aren’t Sango and Miroku, any more than you’re Kikyou, but it felt good to be near them,” he admitted. “With a life like mine has been it’s hard not to believe in fate and I like knowing that if the worst happens with Naraku that it will be possible for me to find you again.” He looked at her and their eyes met. “I’ll definitely find you, Kagome.”
“We’ll find each other,” she said. “Always.”
