"And why does Tsuyu-hime need rescuing from the Lord of Musashi Province?" Kagome arches a brow with her question and waits for a response from the stranger. She's not convinced that it's a good idea to go rescuing someone from a Lord, let alone at a stranger's behest.
"Because none of the girls taken to the Lord's castle are ever seen again!" That certainly gets Kagome's attention and she glances at Kurama and InuYasha before focusing on the stranger.
"How many girls?" The question comes from Kurama, his voice low and serious, and his expression is dark when Kagome looks his way again.
"I don't know! But he's having girls brought in from all over the country and no one sees them ever again! Please, help me rescue Tsuyu-hime!" The stranger prostrates himself with his plea and Kagome can't help but feel sorry for him.
"We'll help," Kagome decides because this smacks of something darker at its core and she knows that a yōkai might be involved. "Uh, what's your name?"
"You will? Thank you, my lady!" He pops up, tears in his eyes and he cradles his monkey to his chest once more. "I am Nobunaga and this is Hiyoshimaru!"
"N-Nobunaga?" Kagome blinks as the stranger-Nobunaga nods with a tearful smile.
"He's not the one you're thinking of, Kagome-san. Oda Nobunaga hasn't been born yet," Kurama informs her quietly and InuYasha glances at them with a hint of curiosity. "And he was never a vassal to the Takeda."
"Oh." Well, it's a good thing Kurama spoke up because Kagome had been ready to stick her foot in her mouth and make a fool of herself. "Well, Nobunaga-san, I am Higurashi Kagome," she introduces herself with a slight bow as she's been taught in accordance to her position as a miko. "And these are-"
"Yōko Kurama," Kurama says as he remains straight-backed.
"InuYasha," InuYasha says curtly.
Nobunaga gives Kurama and InuYasha a nervous look before he bows deeply to Kagome. "Thank you again, Higurashi-sama!"
Kagome frowns at the sight of all of the girls being lead towards the castle then looks to Kurama who is kneeling beside her. "I know things are different in this time but they're all so young."
"It is unfortunate but this is how things are, for now, Kagome-san." Kurama scans the line of girls and then shifts his attention to the men in charge of escorting them. His ears twitch and he scowls as he listens in on their conversation. "The guards believe that the Lord is possessed by a mononoke and that it is eating the girls."
Kagome frowns in thought as she tries to recall what a mononoke is. She knows that it traditionally refers to a few different types of spirits but with the existence of yōkai the guards could be confusing a yōkai with a spirit. Lifting her gaze to the castle in the distance, she expands her senses and her eyes widen with what she finds. "There's a shard in the castle!"
"Shoulda figured as much," InuYasha grumbles from behind her.
"A what?" Nobunaga asks as he looks away from the girls being escorted to the castle and at Kagome.
"Nothing you need to worry about," Kurama answers before Kagome can respond. "We'll wait until nightfall to breach the castle's walls."
Kagome stares up at the castle for a moment then nods. She can sense more than just the shard but she can't quite make heads or tails of it, and since they have some time… "There's a yōkai up there too but there's something strange… I don't know what it is or how to describe it."
Kurama frowns at her words then looks up at the castle himself. It deepens as he feels for what Kagome is trying to describe and he suppresses the urge to snarl. "We're dealing with a Tsukumo no Gama."
"What's that?" Kagome asks worriedly as she looks at Kurama.
"It's a toad yōkai that feeds on the souls of the prey it captures in its egg-sac prison," Myōga explains from InuYasha's shoulder. "And those girls are its prey."
"Then we must go and rescue Tsuyu-hime right away!" Nobunaga starts to get up from where they are hiding out in the bushes along the side of the road only for InuYasha to force him to stay down.
"We can't go at this recklessly," he hisses out.
"InuYasha is correct. Rushing in will only put Tsuyu-hime in danger," Kurama says with a look of approval to InuYasha. "We need to come up with a plan that will force the Tsukumo no Gama from the Lord's body and destroy it once it's out."
"Fire will force it out," comes Hiei's voice from behind them and they turn to look at the apparition.
"I can finish it off with Tessaiga once Sh-Hiei forces it out," InuYasha offers with a grimace as Hiei gives him a pointed look for his near slip-up.
"Uh," Nobunaga looks between them nervously before he just stares at Hiei. "Who are you?"
Hiei arches a brow in response then vanishes up into the trees.
"So, should we still wait until nightfall?" Kagome asks as Nobunaga stares at the spot where Hiei had been.
"We will wait," Kurama confirms.
