With You Chapter Fifteen
The Return Part Two Sesshomaru looked at the little girl in front of him. He didn’t realize just how aroused he had been, how much his instinct had taken over. Otherwise, he would’ve been able to keep himself from doing something as foolish as getting Rin pregnant. But that thought was pushed back to his mind as he tried to fully grasp the sight in front of him. He was trying to understand why his own child perceived him as a possible threat. He glared at her, which only seemed to intensify the stare she was giving him. Rin saw the stare and frowned, wondering why Sesshomaru was giving her a death glare. She then looked down and saw Saiyuki’s stance and gasped. “Saiyuki?! What are you doing?” Her daughter looked up at her and softened the look in her eyes, but kept her claws bared. Rin turned and grabbed her hand. “What are you doing, Saiyuki? Why are you acting like this?” Saiyuki said nothing. She just turned her gaze back to Sesshomaru and began to glare again. Sesshomaru was silent as he returned her gaze. Saiyuki turned back to her mother and leaned to her ear. She put her hand by the side of her mouth and whispered something in her mother’s ear. Rin turned and said, “Saiyuki, I understand, but he’s not going to hurt us. As a matter of fact, he’s-“ “An old friend of your mother’s.” Rin turned and looked at him pleadingly. But Sesshomaru’s look was unrelenting. For some reason, he didn’t want the girl to know who he was. Rin sighed and bowed her head. “Yes. He’s just an old friend.” She placed her hand on her daughter’s shoulder. “So you can relax, okay? He’s not going to hurt us.” Saiyuki was quiet for a moment, and then she smiled at her mother and relaxed her hands at her sides. She looked at Sesshomaru one last time before turning and running down the road. She spread her arms and began to run from side to side, as though she were pretending to fly. Rin and Sesshomaru began to follow, walking side by side, slowly trailing behind her. There was a moment of silence as the two of them watched their daughter run around with her arms spread as though she were some sort of bird. “I’m sorry about what happened back there.” Sesshomaru turned to look at Rin, her words having surprised him a little. “About her…I don’t know, threatening you like that. I apologize.” Sesshoamaru continued to watch as the girl soon got tired of running around and just began to hum quietly to herself. “There’s no need to apologize. I’m actually glad to see that she’s so protective of you.” Rin frowned. “That’s just the thing: she isn’t. She’s never done that before. She’s usually kind to everyone, even strangers. I think she got that from me.” A thoughtful look crossed Sesshomaru’s face as he looked at the girl humming her way down the path. “So I’m the only one that she’s ever threatened like that.” Rin chuckled and placed her hand on her neck. “I don’t know what got into her all of a sudden.” * * * * * * Hitomi made her way down the dirt road, silently humming a song to herself. Beside her, her big sister was silent, carrying the small ball that they had been playing with earlier. As she looked at the sky, she saw the sunset that seemed to decorate the sky with deep red and orange colors. Beautiful, she thought. She turned away just in time to see her sister running ahead of her. Looking ahead, Kaede saw a man and a woman, too far away for her to recognize. She opened her mouth to say something, unsure of what may happen, but then she saw a little child running ahead of the couple in front of them, and she saw the cream and orange squares from in the child’s kimono. She smiled and relaxed. It must be Saiyuki. Saiyuki and HItomi were best friends. Since they were pretty much the same age, the two of them got along together like peas in a pod. One rarely did anything without the other. Kaede smiled as she watched her sister run to her best friend. * * * * * * As they walked, Sesshomaru sensed that they were being followed. The demonic presence was very faint, however, almost non-existent. Just then, a little about the same age as Rin’s daughter came running up to her. She ran up to Saiyuki and embraced her from behind. Turning around to see who it was, Saiyuki squealed and hugged her back. The two of them then began to walk down the road together, chattering excitedly. Sesshomaru looked at the other girl closely. The demonic presence that he sensed wasn’t coming from her. It was still behind him. He leaned over to Rin and said, “Be careful. We’re being followed.” Frowning, Rin turned to look behind her. She laughed and said, “Oh, that’s just Kaede. Inuyasha and Kagome’s daughter.” Sesshomaru looked at the girl in front of them again. “And she is…” “Hitomi. Her little sister. And Saiyuki’s best friend.” Sesshomaru frowned at the thought that a child fathered by him could be best friends with one of Inuyasha’s children. It made him a little nauseous. “She doesn’t appear to be that much older that your daughter.” Rin looked away, embarrassed. “Saiyuki was conceived only a few days after Hitomi was born.” There was a moment of silence between the two of them as the memories of that one night floated into their minds. The scents, the emotions, the passion…it all seemed to sweep over them again in those few moments, before fading away and retreating to the depths of their memory. Sesshomaru broke the silence. “So, they’re about the same age?” Rin nodded. “That’s right. They’ve been close from the very beginning. Hitomi was kind to Saiyuki when everyone else wasn’t.” Sesshomaru frowned. “What do you mean?” Rin looked at the ground. “Well, you know. They treated her differently because she was a half-demon.” “They don’t do the same to Inuyasha’s children?” Rin shook her head. “Kaede, she’s more human than demon. And Hitomi was conceived during the period of time when Inuyasha loses his demonic power.” Sesshomaru’s head whirled around. “What did you just say?” Rin thought for a moment, then gasped and looked at Sesshomaru with a worried look on her face. “I wasn’t supposed to tell you that.” “What do you mean, Inuyasha loses his demonic power? Tell me, Rin!” Rin gulped. “I can’t tell you that. I promised him I wouldn’t.” “What’s going on?” Kaede’s voice startled Rin, who jumped at the sound of the foreign voice entering the conversation. Sesshomaru turned to her and spoke to her with a hurried tone. “What do you know about your father’s transformations? Kaede gave him a sideways look. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Sesshomaru glared at her. “Is that so?” She shook her head. “Who are you, anyway?” Rin chuckled nervously. “This is Lord Sesshomaru.” Kaede’s eyes widened at the sound of the name. “I remember you; you’re the demon that was injured.” She looked up at the sky for a moment. “I think there’s something I’m forgetting, aren’t I?” Her finger rubbed at her chin as she was deep in thought, and then she snapped her fingers. “Oh, yeah, now I remember. You’re my dad’s big brother, right?” She pointed at him excitedly. Sesshomaru glared at her. He turned and looked at Rin’s daughter, but she was too far up the path to have heard anything that was said. He turned back to Kaede and said, “Don’t you ever say that again, understand?” Kaede frowned. “Why not, it’s the truth.” “Never again,” Sesshomaru growled. He took a step forward. “Okay, okay.” She raised her hand in front of her. Rin watched their interaction quietly. She was hoping that they would change the subject. She knew that she didn’t want to keep talking about Inuyasha’s transformations. She was already in trouble for mentioning it in the first place, because she just knew Kaede was going to tell her parents. She was going to hear it from Inuyasha, that was for sure. “So, why are you here?” The question was just what she had hoped for. Rin turned to look at Sesshomaru, who had turned away and begun to look at the forest. “I was…advised to come here. I was told that there was something that I needed to see.” Kaede thought for a moment. Then she happened to look up the path at the two girls, who were still heading up the path toward the village. At first she frowned, and then slowly, a look of realization came over her face. “Oh, I get it. I always wondered why my parents would never tell me about Saiyuki’s father. But now I see.” Sesshonmaru looked at her. “What do you mean?” “Well, it’s obvious to anyone with a brain that you’re Saiyuki’s father. I mean, she looks just like you.” Rin immediately began praying for another change of subject. Kaede turned to Rin and said, “I’m right, aren’t I?” Rin nodded. Kaede looked at Sesshomaru. “See? So what’s the problem?” Rin decided to speak up. “Sesshomaru doesn’t want her to know that he’s her father.” Kaede raised an eyebrow. “Really, how come?” “I have my reasons.” Kaede shrugged. “Whatever.” She turned away and began to follow her sister. Rin and Sesshomaru stood there for a while before following suit. “Lord Sesshomaru?” “Yes, Rin?” “Why don’t you want Saiyuki to know you’re her father?” Sesshomaru sighed. “I have my reasons.” * * * * * * “YOU TOLD HIM WHAT?!” Inuyasha’s voice shook the roof of the hut. Hitomi ran to her mother and covered her face in her arms. Inuyasha looked at Rin with a look of pure rage. Rin stood there quietly, although she was deathly afraid of what he might do. But she knew that telling him was the right thing; as much as she loved Sesshomaru, she knew that he could be downright ruthless when it came to his enemies. And he did consider Inuyasha one of his enemies. “I’m sorry; it just slipped out in the conversation. I didn’t mean to tell him…” “DIDN’T MEAN TO TELL HIM? What the hell am I supposed to think about that, huh? JUST WHERE THE FUCK DOES THAT LEAVE ME, RIN? HUH?” Rin cowered at the sound of his voice. “I’m sorry.” Just as Inuyasha was about to open his mouth again, Kaede, who had been sitting next to her mother, stood up and spoke. “Uh, Daddy, before you go on, I think you should know that she didn’t actually tell him when it was.” Inuyasha’s head whirled around and gave her a fierce look. “What?” “He didn’t know when it was. All he knew was something about you transforming and losing your powers.” Inuyasha glared. “That’s all he knows?” Kaede nodded. Inuyasha sighed and looked back at Rin. “I’m sorry that I yelled at you, Rin. But you should understand by now, Sesshomaru and I are mortal enemies. If he could’ve had his way, I’d be dead and rotting ten times over by now.” Rin nodded. “I understand.” “No, I don’t think you do. If you did, you would take better care of keeping my secrets, like I told you to in the first place.” “Inuyasha.” Kagome’s voice was firm. “That’s enough.” “No, Kagome, she’s got to understand-“ “Inuyasha, I said that’s enough.” Inuyasha opened his mouth to speak again, but closed it. The last time he had ignored her when she spoke to him in that tone, she made him sleep in a tree for almost a month. “Fine.” Inuyasha turned back to Rin. “Just…just be careful what you say to him, okay Rin?” The young woman nodded. Inuyasha turned away from her and walked toward his family. He picked up Hitomi, who looked like she was going to cry, and tried to comfort her. Rin stood there and looked at Kagome, who she expected to say something about the situation as well. Instead, Kagome opened her mouth and said, “Well, Rin? Is there anything else?” Rin shook her head. Kagome smiled at her. “Then I think that you and Sesshomaru have some catching up to do, am I right?” Rin smiled and nodded, then turned away and began to run toward her home, where Saiyuki and Sesshomaru were waiting. * * * * * * Sesshomaru stood by the side of the hut quietly, while the little half-demon girl in front of him began to resume her game of running around like she was a giant bird. He watched her as she ran around, enjoying the imaginary world that she seemed to have created for herself, and couldn’t help but feel a little jealousy. It quickly passed over him, but he felt it nonetheless. But that makes no sense. She’s just a child; I’m one of the most powerful demons ever to set foot on this land. What do I need to be jealous of her for? Just then, he saw Rin making her way toward the hut. As she approached, the little girl stopped her game and when her mother made it to their home, she ran to her and held out her arms. Rin smiled and lifted her from the ground and into her arms. She began to walk to the hut, smiling as Saiyuki hugged at her neck. Sesshomaru watched them come closer, feeling a sense of pride. To see his woman carrying his child, it made him… Wait, my woman…what am I thinking? She’s not my woman. She’s not even really my ward, not anymore. Sesshomaru began to feel frustrated. Not towards Rin, but to himself. He didn’t understand why these unnatural feelings, feelings that he had never felt for anyone before, were suddenly coming about. He didn’t understand what they were or why he was even beginning to feel them after all those years of having felt nothing but anger and contempt. Rin stopped in front of him, looking at him quietly. She looked into his eyes as she said, “Is everything okay, Lord Sesshomaru?” Sesshomaru nodded, looking at her closely. As he looked at her, he once again began to feel the feelings that he had felt before: a sense of pride in the child that Rin carried in her arms and a sharp sting in his heart when he returned the deep eyeful look that Rin was giving him just then. Turning away, he said, “So this is where you live?” Rin looked at her hut and nodded. “Uh-huh. It’s a nice little place.” She walked inside and began to get things together to make dinner. As she did so, she tried to spark up a conversation with Sesshomaru. “So, how have you been, Lord Sesshomaru?” Sesshomaru entered the hut and stood near the wall. “I’ve been… I’ve been well.” He watched her as she expertly prepared to fix a dinner for her daughter and herself. She turned to him and said, “Would you like something, Lord Sesshomaru?” Sesshomaru shook his head. “I don’t eat human food.” Rin chuckled. “Oh, that’s right.” She went back to making her dinner. * * * * * * Later on, when Saiyuki had had her dinner and had been put to bed, Rin went outside and looked up at the sky. The moonlight was dim, but the sky still shone bright with the dotted lights of the stars. As she stood there, quietly admiring the sight, Sesshomaru joined her. His voice was barely audible as he said, “So, you like to look at the stars?” Rin nodded. “They shine so brightly, it’s like the sky is decorated with thousands of fireflies. It’s such a beautiful sight.” Sesshomaru was silent. He looked at the stars for a moment as well, and then turned his gaze back towards Rin. She was too taken with the sight in front of her to notice his wandering eye. She had gotten a little taller since he had last seen her. She also seemed to fill out her kimono a little more, although not much. Overall, she still looked the same, just a little older. She turned to see him looking at her and smiled. “Well, it’s nice to see that that much hasn’t changed.” He frowned. “What do you mean?” Rin smiled seductively. “Come on. You’re giving me that same look you gave me all those years ago. You remember, don’t you?” Sesshomaru gasped at the realization that she had been aware of his stares all those years ago. He hadn’t expected that. He turned away, embarrassed, but her hand reached out and turned his face back towards hers. “Why do you do that? Why do you always turn away? You should know by now that I’m not embarrassed by you or anything. Why do you feel the need to hide yourself from me?” “I’m not hiding from you. I just…” “You just what, Lord Sesshomaru?” Sesshomaru turned away. “Never mind.” Rin opened her mouth to protest, but against her better judgment, closed it again. She just hugged his waist and laid her head on the chest of his armor. Together, the two of them stood, quietly, oblivious to the world around them. A feeling swept over Sesshomaru, it was..strange. It felt familiar and not familiar at the same time. It was strange. He felt…content. Like everything in the storm that was his entire life was finally beginning to reach the calm. This beautiful young woman in front of him, a beautiful little girl sleeping in the hut nearby. In that one moment, if he could’ve stopped time, he would have. His mind floated away. He seemed to drift in and out, but he was still fully aware of when he placed his hand under Rin’s chin and pulled her face close to his, capturing her lips in a deep kiss. * * * * * * The smell of the fresh morning dew hit his nose, and somehow, it snapped the daiyoukai awake. As he sat up straight, his breathing was erratic. He looked outside and saw that the sky was still dark, with just a small shade of orange beginning to peek over the horizon. As he began to get his bearings, he realized that he was naked, sleeping on top of his kimono. As his head turned side to side, surveying the hut, he could see Saiyuki sleeping soundly nearby. He frowned when he realized couldn’t see Rin. But then he looked down, and there she was, lying next to him, sleeping peacefully. Covered in his kimono from the chest down, she slept silently. Her kimono lay close by, near the doorway. He growled angrily, but he was angrier with himself than anything. Once again, he had given in to his instinct, and had let it get the best of him. He stood on his feet, taking great care not to wake Rin from her slumber. * * * * * * The sun was silent as it crept its way through the morning sky. By the time Rin awoke, it had made its way at the very peak in the morning sky. As she sat up straight, Rin rubbed the sleep from her eyes and looked to her side. She gasped when she realized that she was sleeping alone and Sesshomaru was nowhere to be found. As she clutched her kimono tightly around her, she began to fight the tears that were beginning to well up in her eyes. Once again, he had left her there. Just left her there. No goodbye, nothing. Just up and left. Beside her, Saiyuki sat closely, looking at her mother with the saddest look she could muster. She could see that her mother was really sad to see that her friend was gone. Rin’s heart ached. She really hated that Sesshomaru had left her again, but as she thought about it, she realized that it was probably for the best. Sesshomaru was a complex man. Even when she was a child, she could see that he struggled with everyday emotions. Maybe it was because of the fact that he was a demon, but he never seemed to understand some of the things that she would say or do. As Rin once again tried to justify Sesshomaru’s reasons for leaving her and their daughter alone, she heard Saiyuki’s voice call out to her. “Mama? Mama, are you gonna be okay?” Rin looked at her daughter and smiled. “Yes, sweetheart, I’m going to be just fine.” * * * * * * As Sesshomaru made his way down the path, he silently cursed himself for weakening and giving in to his desire the night before. But it was strange…he didn’t even seem to remember his demonic instinct rearing its ugly head. He didn’t remember anything, just that strange feeling of contentment that he experienced, just before he and Rin… Well, whatever it was, it didn’t matter. He was going to make sure of it. But you can’t just leave her. She has a child now. YOUR child. You can’t just abandon her now… Sesshomaru shook his head. He couldn’t think about that now. He tried to focus his mind on something else. Something important. Like trying to figure out when Inuyasha lost his demonic power. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
