“Then you have one month, Miko.” He walks into the bush. Sighing, I take off after him. Hope this is the right choice, but it’s the best option I’ve got.
As soon as we return to the dimly lit cave I run to Rin, who is lying motionlessly on a blanket in the back, next to a small fire.
“Rin.” I knee down beside her, stroking her long black hair, as she sleeps. She makes a cooing noise, and turns over to her side, facing the wall.
It’s all my fault. I couldn’t make that shot, and now she’s hurt.
I turn around, looking up at the diayoukai standing behind me. “Is she all right?” I barely manage to squeak the question out past the lump in my throat. I don’t think I could live with myself if she dies.
“She’s strong. She will be fine.” I sigh in relief.
He knees down next to me, carefully lifting off his fur pelt and draping it over Rin’s thin body. She latches on to the fluff, and cuddles up against it, much like a child with a blankie. Never seen an adult look as innocent as Rin does now.
“She likes it.” I smile sweetly as the adorable display.
“She always has. I think if comforts her.” To my surprise, a smile just as sweet as mine, forms on his lips for a spilt second before he raises back to his feet.
“Come, we need to discuss your plan to save Inuyasha.” His voice drips with skepticism. He doesn’t really think I can do it. Or maybe he just doesn’t believe it’s possible.
“Okay, yeah.” I pull my tired frame to my feet and follow him out the cave.
He gracefully sits cross legged in front of the cave entrance, folding his arms and staring out into the distance. I invite myself to the seat next to him, and look in the same direction, trying to see what is catching his attention. All I see are trees.
“So?” He says without looking down.
“So? Oh yeah, my plans.” What are my plans again? So far I’ve come up with, get help, save Inuyasha. I think I might be missing a few steps.
“Well before I can go about figuring out how to save him, I need to know what exactly happened. Please explain it to me?”
Sesshomaru takes a deep breath and sit in quiet contemplation before he begins.
“After the battle with Naraku, and you left, Inuyasha stayed in Edo with his human friends. I saw him on occasion when I would check on Rin’s well being. He hardly spoke to me, and when he did it was abrupt. Whatever was troubling him, he did not confide in me. Rin tells me he spent much of his time by the well near his forest. At first, only leaving for the necessities. After awhile he began living in the town with the monk and his wife. He stayed with them for years, protect his own, and even mine.’ He looks back over his shoulder towards Rin’s direction, then directly to me, his brow narrows. It’s a bit unnerving, having him look so intently at me.
“Where were you? He was waiting for you for years. Why were you staying away from him? He needed you.”
My break breaks into a thousand pieces, and a bury my face into my hands. Inuyasha needed me, even Sesshomaru could see that. He needed me and I wasn’t there for him. Am I the reason he gave himself to the youkais? Please Kami, don’t let that be true.
“I’m from the future. The well connects my time to this one. I tried, I really did. I wanted to come back so badly, but it wouldn’t let me. As soon as it did, all this time had passed over here, while only three years passed for me. I wanted to be here, with him. I would if I could have.” Not sure how much of my mumbled speech he understood through my hands, but he seemed to have caught the drift judging by the grunt of understanding he just made.
I lower my hands, and wipe away the tears before they can fall, then turn to him, laying a hand on his arm for emotional support. I just want to be close to someone, even if his not really going to coddle me. I will probably need some closeness once I hear the answer to my next question. I don’t think I’m going to like it.
“Sesshomaru, why did he do it? You said he gave into his loneliness and despair. What exactly do you when by that?” He looks down at my hand questioningly, but doesn’t brush it off.
“I pursued after him after he left the village, but he stayed hidden. I found him three years later, he was no longer thinking rationally. He spoke of you, that was waiting for your return. Said you would return when humans could fly, metal would move with a life of it’s own, the forests became tamed, and when all of youkai blood were gone. He claimed to have seen this world before, and that he would wait until then to see you again. Miko, are the youkais gone in your future?” I nod my head.
“Then he is really trying to prep the world for you…”
“But that’s not what I want!” I grip my hand tightly over his arm, and he looks at me surprised. “I never wanted the youkai gone. I had no idea why they are gone in my time. I tried to find answers, but where I’m from the youkai are a thing of… myth. No one really believes they are real.” All the lives. The youkai families, communities, government, all forgotten so quickly. They were real, but lost everything as if it never mattered. And I’m to blame.
Inuyasha is trying to make the world he saw when he came to my time reality, starting with ending all youkai life. How could he think that’s a good idea? Or that is even something I would ever want?
“How much time passes before we are consider a myth?”
“I am from around five hundred years in the future. But youkai have been gone much longer then that.” I can see the gears turning in his head.
“Then I’ve already failed. If Zenaku is stopped then there would still be some youkais in the future. They would have the chance to breed and bare young. That fact that there is none, means I couldn’t stop him.”
“We can’t think of it like that Sesshomaru. We have to try. If we can save him, then we can change the future. We must try.”
“Hn. What is your plan, Miko?”
Oh yeah, the plan thing again. Well, I should start with speaking to someone who was good friends with Inuyasha and has a general idea of what’s be going on. They would have had years of thinking of something that could be done to help. Maybe if we all sit down and think this through, we can figure something out.
I find my resolve and ask the one question I’ve been avoiding for days. “Are my friends alive?”
Sesshomaru doesn’t get a chance to answer as a voice from behind has us both turning towards it.
“A few.” Rin leans against the edge on the rocky entrance, lightly petting the fur draped over her shoulder.
Her gaze meets my hand resting on her lord’s arm, and I receive the first dirty look I’ve ever gotten from her. I pull my hand away.
“This won’t be the first attempt we’ve made to separate Inuyasha from Zenaku. The only thing we are sure of after all the tries is that Inuyasha is unreachable, Kagome. But I guess no matter how many times you hear that, you won’t be satisfied until you have tried yourself. I know I wouldn’t give up if I were in your shoes. If there’s anyone in the world that Inuyasha will come to his senses for, and kick out the youkai living within him, it be you. Tomorrow, I will take you home to Edo.” She wraps her arms tightly around the fur and retreats back inside.
“You’ve tried to save him before?” Shocked, I question him with eyes the size of diner plates. He never said he tried before.
“He was my brother after all, of course I would try.” He leans back on his hands, and sighs to the sky, silver hair falling back, swaying in the light breeze. “After it happened, and Zenaku was born, we tried to pull the invading youkai from his body many times. It never worked. And our attempts to save him gave him the time needed to consume as many youkais he needed to become as strong as he is. If I had just slain him after he was born…”
“Please, don’t…” I shake my head, hoping he doesn’t finish. He shouldn’t regret trying to help and he shouldn’t be blaming himself for any of this. None of it’s his fault, it’s mine. He has just appointed himself in charge of cleaning up my mess.
He shakes his head slightly then returns of staring intently at the very uninteresting trees.
I rejoin him, watching as the occasional night bird darts between the foliage, looking for breakfast. The moonlight reflects in the tiny eyes of the small animals scampering in the brush as they turn to inspect us curiously, before running off. Somewhere in the distance, frogs sing, chirping along with the crickets. A breeze rustles through the brush, stirring up leaves that dance in the sky, and the stars twinkle happily above.
Not as uninteresting as I thought, not quite as exciting as TV, but still, not bad. Actually very relaxing.
“Mind if I stay?” I gave him a pleading look. For some reason I just really want to stay right here, watching the peaceful night with him.
“Do as you wish, Miko.”
