Chaper 15- The Masked Man
Ayame's feet clicked against the floor as she walked down the spiraling stairs. Glowing candles with delicate glass covers lined the golden wall. The curling, wooden stair rail was smooth under her gloved hand. She glanced at the silky black glove on her hand and frowned. She wouldn't be caught dead in gloves. Looking down she saw she was dressed in a European styled gown. The fabric was a bright emerald green, and it sparkled and winked at her. At the end of the stairs was a giant mirror that showed the glittering gown completely. She noticed that she also wearing a black mask that pointed out from her eyes. Ayame gasped softly, she barely recognized herself in such a beautiful gown, or maybe it was the mask?
Before her was great dining room, everything was European styled, which she only knew from the strange painting Kagome had shown her. A huge oak dining table stretched down the room, which looked to be never ending. Elegant silver chandeliers hung from the ceiling; thousands of diamond-drops dangled from the well crafted silver. The padding of the chairs, the table cloth and the curtains were all a rich, white silk. What was the most perplexing and amazing thing about the room was the fact the floor was smooth, solid ice. But the room wasn't chilly at all. Slowly, she took a step into the room, afraid the ice would crack under her step. A gentle click sounded, but no cracking. Nodding, satisfied the ice wouldn't break, she continued into the room. She spun around slowly, admiring the beauty of this great room, nothing in Sesshomaru's palace could compare. "My flower, you take my breath away."
Ayame jumped and looked to the archway. There stood her mysterious masked man, dressed in a stylish black suit. He smiled and took her gloved hand gently and kissed it. "I can't stop thinking about you, my flower." He murmured.
Ayame couldn't help but blush underneath her mask. But then it hit her, 'My.. flower? Wasn't that on one of the gifts?' She debated in her head. He let go of her hand and smiled again. "Ah, you have me figured out. It's true. I am your secret admirer. But who could resist your beauty, my flower?"
Ayame took a step back and frowned slightly, "But.. y-you're just in my dreams."
"You're right, I am." He smiled, closing the distance between them. "And in your dreams, you're all mine."
He took her hand again and pulled her to him. Before she knew what was happening, he began to dance slowly to the soft music in the background. She gulped and stared up at him. Ayame was sure her chest was going to explode if her heart beat any faster. She took a deep breath, trying to clear her thoughts. "So. You're trying to tell me that you sent those gifts. All of them?"
He spun her and nodded. "The silk fan, flowers, the kimono and hidden dagger." He grinned down at her. "And of course the perfume. Which I suppose you don't like, since you threw it away." He looked sad for a moment then smiled again.
They continued to dance to the soft music in silence as Ayame thought it over. "How do I know that I'm not just making this up in my head? Hoping that it wasn't Sesshomaru trying to buy his way into my bed?"
Ayame saw an eyebrow peak over the top of his mask, "Sesshomaru?"
Ayame growled, yelling at herself for talking about him in this perfectly wonderful dream. "Yes. Sesshomaru. He's my mate. Not that I want him."
The masked man chuckled as he looked away from her for a moment. "I promise. I am the one who sent you those gifts. Now I see why you threw away the perfume."
He paused in thought. "To prove this. I will let you in on a little secret. You will soon get another gift, a second dagger that's not hidden."
"Will it continue with the Iris theme?" Ayame grinned up at him.
"You don't like it? I thought maybe it was your favorite because-" He touched the iris in her hair.
Ayame shrugged. "It is."
He smiled again, and she thought she might faint. Instead, she stumbled, falling into his chest. He didn't seem phased at all as he put a finger under her chin and tilted her head up. "My flower, how lucky I am to have you in my arms."
His bright turquoise eyes seemed to glaze over as he leaned down closer to her. She licked her lips in anticipation and waited.
Then Ayame woke up, drooling on Sesshomaru's family tree. She sat up, wiping the drool from her chin and stared at the book before her. "Eh... oops."
She whistled and looked around, wiping the drool up with the corner of her skirt. She quickly shut the book and looked for a place to put it, 'No way am I climbing that shelf again.'
The wolf demon attempted to shove the huge book into an empty spot on one of the low shelves. She then realized that the reason the book had been so high was because the shelves at the bottom were too small. Sighing, she glanced around again. Moving some books around, she shoved the sparkling book into the shelf on its side. Nodding with approval, she stood back and admired her work. It stood out like a sore thumb. Scratching her nose she casually strolled out of the library.
On her way back to her room, Ayame thought about the masked man in her dreams. Was it even possible that he was real? She stroked her chin thoughtfully, as if she had a beard. 'If he is real. He must be a dream demon. I should asked Satoru about them.'
Ayame turned into her room and stopped dead in her tracks. There, on her bed, was a gift. With a nervous gulp, she walked over to the package and stared at it like it was going to explode in her face. Kuito lifted his head and eyed her curiously.
Slowly, she pulled the purple ribbon out of a bow. This would prove if the man in her dreams was real or not. Or that she was a physic. Ayame counted to three in her head and jerked the lid off. Inside sat a dagger in a thigh sheath. The hilt was smooth steel with a blooming iris at the tip. Ayame noticed she was breathing quickly and tried to calm down, but there was a note at the bottom of the box. He heart thumped out of her chest. "Alright. So what if he's real? It's not like he wants to hurt me... right?" She questioned out loud.
Ayame shook her head and picked up the note.
My Flower,
"Dreamy. Secret. Admirer?" She read out loud.
Without thinking, she held the letter to her heart. The mystery man was real. So why wasn't he already in her bed? With a faint sigh, she dropped the letter back into the box and picked up the thigh sheath with the dagger. It was a black leather sheath with silver buckles, and very well crafted. She pulled up her skirt and buckled it to her thigh. Since her fight with Sesshomaru, she had been carrying around her sword everywhere, but a little extra protection couldn't hurt.
She pulled her skirt over the dagger and looked at herself in the mirror. There was no evidence that she was wearing a dagger on her thigh. She smiled at herself in the mirror. 'Let's see Sesshomaru get me now.'
"Do you fear for your life in my palace, Ayame?"
'Speak of the devil.' Ayame thought to herself and turned towards the door. She glared daggers at him, she was getting sick of him always butting in on her privacy. " Yes, from you."
Sesshomaru continued to stand in her doorway, his gaze calm. "Why would I kill my own mate?"
Ayame snorted, touching her sword hilt lightly. "You certainly abuse me enough."
Sesshomaru gave her a lazy grin, "And you enjoy it."
She felt her cheeks become instantly enflamed. "I-I..."
Gasping, her eyes widened as she thought about it. 'Do I like it? When he spank me.. I was so turned on...'
Pursing her lips she crossed her arms. "I do not!"
Sesshomaru was suddenly in front of her, raising his hand. She flinched as he ran a clawed finger over her soft cheek. "You love it, just as much as I love it when you struggle." His said in a husky whisper.
Ayame gritted her teeth, hitting his hand away, and he let her. She shoved past him and left. Kuito, the only one of her wolves in the room, followed close behind. She could feel Sesshomaru's hot gaze on her back but she ignored it.
She decided to get out of the palace for a little while and get some fresh air. She went by the kitchen to see if any of her other wolves wanted to get out for a bit. Satoru had built a small house out behind the kitchen that he filled with blankets for Kilana and the pups. He'd done this since the pups ate so much and Ayame barely had any space in her bed room for them to run around. She didn't like the thought of then running around the halls of the Palace, and Kilana would most likely rip anyone apart if they came to close to one of her angels. Ayame had wondered where he had found the time to build such a sturdy structure.
Kuito and Kavati were very eager to come along, they hadn't gone for a run since Kouga had been in the palace. Ayame frowned, 'Kouga... we should go see how Kouga is doing.'
Kilana said that the pups weren't old enough to go outside the walls. She'd been thankful to have her pups in such a well protected place. So Ayame and her two wolves made their way out the gate and tracked down Kouga.
They found him sitting alone by a small stream, his back leaning against a tree. He gazed vacantly into the flowing water, a stray tear on his cheek. "Kouga..." Ayame whispered sadly.
He jerked his head up, "Ayame!"
Kouga leapt to his feet and ran to her and gathered her into his arms, holding her tight. "Ayame..." he said again as he held her.
Pulling her back, he looked at her with sad eyes. "I've been so worried that you'd hate me forever..."
She exhaled softly. "I don't hate you Kouga. There isn't enough in me to hate anyone but Sesshomaru."
He showed his teeth slightly with a small growl, "That bastard killed my wolf. I'm going to tear him apart!"
Ayame shook her head, placing her hand on Kouga's shoulders. "As much as I want Sesshomaru dead, you need to think about it from his point of view." She paused, staring at Kouga.
Once she was sure he was listening, she continued. "If you were Sesshomaru, and another demon was trying to take your mate. Would you not attack as well? It wasn't his fault Raiden jumped in front of you."
Kouga rubbed a hand roughly over his face. "You're right. I know you're right. It just hurts to lose one of my wolves. They're my family, you know?"
"I know."
She did know, if she had lost a wolf, she'd be hunting down whatever killed them. But if Kouga went up against Sesshomaru, he'd die for sure.
"I-I'm sorry about about Mika," he blurted out. "I know she was a good friend of yours, its just that she cheated on me."
Ayame glared at him, pursing her lips. "Kouga. You shouldn't judge people so quickly! How do you know Mika cheated on you? Yes, she was with that guard. But it had been awhile ago when I had told you. She could have ended it. And maybe she didn't tell you these things because she wanted to start over with you! You reacted without thinking or asking questions."
Kouga's shoulders slouched as he stared down, ashamed. "I know, I just couldn't control myself. I'm sorry, Ayame. I really am..."
"I haven't forgiven you for killing Mika. But I won't shut you out because I can't lose another friend."
Kouga looked up at her and smiled sadly. "Really?"
Ayame nodded, her face staying firm. She sat down next to the stream and stared into it as Kouga had done before. It didn't make the hurt go away from losing Mika. Kouga silently sat next to her and they stayed like that for awhile. Ayame's wolves had wandered off sometime when they had been talking apparently. "Kilana had her pups." She said quietly, breaking the silence.
"That's good..." Kouga mumbled.
She looked up at Kouga, who was staring into the water again. "One looks just like Raiden. We named him Raiden Junior."
Kouga chuckled as he smiled sadly. "That would make him happy."
"I want you to take Raiden Junior and add him to your pack." Ayame said, surprising even herself. She had wanted to keep the pups together, but Kouga looked so sad. She knew that a knew Raiden would fill that hole in his heart.
Kouga shook his head, "No Ayame, they should all stay together."
Ayame took Kouga hand and held it in hers. "Kouga, Raiden Junior belongs with your pack. Whenever I go back to the mountains, his fur won't be thick enough to handle the cold. You lost Raiden and you hurt. I know Raiden Junior will help that pain go away."
Kouga nodded, "Alright. But only when he's fully grown."
Ayame smiled and let go of his hands. "Thank you, Ayame." He said.
She nodded, and they went back to staring into the small stream. Occasionally a fish swam by, splashing water about.
When will you forgive me, Ayame?" Kouga whispered, plucking at the grass.
Ayame blinked, his voice drawing her out of a daze. She watched him quietly for a moment and replied. "I don't know when I'll forgive you, Kouga. It's hard when the memory of Mika is still fresh in my mind."
He stopped pulling at the grass and grabbed her hand. "Ayame, let me make it up to you somehow. Stay with me!"
She sighed, pulling her hand away and standing. "You know I can't do that, Kouga. We've been over this."
He reached for her, then let his hand drop. "I know. I just wish you could."
She couldn't take it anymore. His puppy dog face was making her feel so guilty when she shouldn't. "I have to go, Kouga. Take care of yourself."
Kouga gave her a small smile and waved as she walked away from him.
Satoru chuckled. "You and your dumplings. Well they're safe for now. Miss Rin has returned to her village. But she does visit often."
Ayame scowled at him, "Why doesn't she just live here if she visits so much?"
"Because that's how Lord Sesshomaru wishes it."
"I wish he wished that she stayed in that village. She's a huge threat to my dumplings..." Ayame grumbled.
Ayame squinted her eyes at the cook suspiciously, "How do you know that?"
He laughed, his eyes watching her with amusement. "I know everything that goes on in this palace."
She rolled her eyes, "I went to see Kouga and see how he was."
Satoru gave her that look, she knew a lecture was coming. He sat next to her and she figured that was a perfect time to shove a dumpling in her mouth. "Ayame. He tried to steal you from Lord Sesshomaru, you think he'd be alright with that?"
With a mouth full of dumpling, she said, " I Dohn't ccarph whaph heph finshk."
"You should care." Somehow he understood her.
The cook came out the steam cloud with a raised eyebrow. "Yes, I have, why?"
She shrugged, trying to act like she wasn't dying for answers. "Well... a book I was reading mentioned one, I was just curious about them."
Satoru narrowed his eyes at her, "Well." He sat down at the table, facing her. "Dream demons are know to invade dreams and change them to their liking. They can also keep their victim in the dream, causing the person to sleep forever and eventually die from starvation. Or they'll just kill the victim in their dream. They never wake up." Ayame cringed, was she really dealing with such a powerful being?
Satoru continued. "They're known for their unnaturally bright eyes. Normally a shade of blue, but some have green eyes." He tapped his chin in thought, "To keep your dreams safe, one would need to wear a strip of leather across their eyes while they slept."
"You know a lot about dream demons." Ayame said in awe.
Satoru nodded. "They're dangerous creatures. Though normally not evil, they can be swayed easily by emotion. I've dealt with a few in my time." He paused and eyed Ayame. "What book did you come across them?"
Ayame coughed and looked at her food. "Just a book."
He peered at her, his expression said he didn't believe her one bit. "I've heard that you've been spending a lot of time in the library. What are you up to?"
"Ohhhh, you know me and my constant yearning for knowledge!" She said standing.
Satoru continued to watch her with a doubtful expression as she shoved her last dumpling in her mouth. "Right. Just stay out of trouble Ayame."
Ayame walked out the door waving to Satoru. "I'm a saint, Satoru. I would never get up to no good."
She shot him a sly smile over her shoulder. The cook stood there shaking his head, hand on his hips, mumbling under his breath. Snickering, she made her way up the stairs, taking two at a time. If she said too much to Satoru, she was sure it'd find its way back to Sesshomaru somehow. The strange way the dog-demon lord had backed off her after their huge fight was no coincidence. There was a voice whispering in his ear, and she was sure it was Satoru's. She wasn't angry with him because of it, she knew Satoru was just looking out for her.
She entered her room to find all her wolves laying around, looking bored out of their minds. She sighed as she lay down next to Kuito, her head resting on Kavati. The pups swarmed her and began to whine about how bored they were. She groaned, pushing them away. "You guys are so spoiled. Go wrestle or something."
They whined some more but eventually went off to amuse themselves. Raiden came over to her and nudged her hand. In his mouth he had the perfume Kagome had given her. He dropped it into her waiting hand and sneezed, the force of the sneeze throwing him backwards into a cute pile of cuteness. Ayame giggled and gathered him into her arms. Absently, she stared at the perfume bottle. There was no way she was using this perfume again. Anything that Sesshomaru liked, she hated. As she stared at the well crafted bottle, an evil plan began to form. A slow, very evil smile touched her lips. "Ohhh yess... that is rich. Best plan ever, Ayame!"
With the evil smile in place still, she patted herself on the back. She dug around the room to find the hair pin Mika had stuck in her hair the day they had gone shopping. She sniffed sadly at the thought, those random memories of Mika always crept up on her. She found it shoved under her pillow. She clutched it in her had and smiled that evil smile again. Now, she waited.

Ayame snuck quietly down the hall, taking special care around Sesshomaru's bedroom door. In one hand she held the perfume bottle, the other, a hair pin. She silently made her way through the quiet palace to Sesshomaru's office door. The lock was easy to pick, she had practice from the other rich homes she'd broken into for the pack.
Noiselessly closing the door behind her, she snuck over to Sesshomaru's desk. She stuck the hairpin in her hair, next to the real iris in her hair. Then she looked at the perfume bottle. She needed to get the strange nozzle off so she could spread the perfume easily. She attempted to twist it, but that didn't work. Then she used her teeth. After a few times of spraying herself in the mouth, which she quickly spat out, she managed to get the top off. Her mouth tasted disgusting, but her evil plan was going smoothly.
She poured a good amount of the perfume into the vase on Sesshomaru's desk, that now had no flowers in it because of him. She then spilled some underneath his desk, just for good measure. Sesshomaru would know right away who had done this, so she went ahead and dropped the bottle and torn off cap on his chair. Content with her masterpiece, she snuck back to her room. Exhausted from her evil deeds, she passed out right away.

Gasping sharply, she twirled to face the masked man. He smiled at her, his bright eyes shining in the darkness. "The night fails. It cannot hide how beautiful you are."
Ayame narrowed her eyes, ignoring the flattery. "What is this place?"
"A woman I once loved lived down there. Often, I'd come here to be closer to her."
"Once?" Ayame questioned.
The masked man's gaze moved from the village below, to her. His eyes were overflowing with sorrow, she felt her heart squeeze. "Oh..."
He sighed, but smiled again. "It has remained one of my favorite places to be though."
Ayame pushed down the pity she felt for him. This was a dream demon she was talking to, there was a chance he could kill her! "Who are you?"
He grinned and tapped the mask, "Your secret admirer."
She groaned, rolling her eyes. "It's not very much of a secret if you're right in front of me. This is my dream! Tell me who you are!"
Still grinning, he took a deep bow, slipping off his mask. "My name is Akimitsu."
Ayame couldn't help stare at the newly unmasked man. Removing the mask had revealed sharp cheek bones and long black lashes that framed his turquoise eyes. Not only was he dashingly handsome, he was beautiful. "Ayame, you're waking up." He looked sad as he stared out over the village. "I hoped we would of had more time."
Akimitsu's image began to blur away, along with the sparkling night sky. He waved and then blew her a kiss.
