“InuYasha,” Asami said quietly through the door. “Your brother is here and he needs to speak to you. He said to bring your sword as well.”
“I’ll be right down,” he replied slipping his arm from beneath Kagome and moving carefully off the bed so as not to wake her.
He glanced at the clock as he pulled on a pair of jeans. He hoped the bastard hadn’t woken Kagome’s mother coming over at barely six in the morning. Though, the older woman did seem to be much more of an early riser than her daughter. His lips quirked upwards at the thin trail of drool that was now dampening the pillow rather than his arm. He couldn’t really blame her for sleeping hard after they had stayed up so long into the night. He grabbed a clean shirt and pulled that on too and then grabbed the Tetsusaiga before heading down the stairs.
Kagome’s mother was in the kitchen drinking a cup of tea and she smiled at him. “Don’t forget your bandana. It’s early but we do get visitors at this hour sometimes.”
He grabbed the square of cloth from the hook in the genkan. “I hope he didn’t wake you up,” he offered as he covered his ears.
“Years of getting my children up and off to school have made waking up early a habit of mine,” she told him. “I was just putting on the water for my tea when he arrived, so don’t worry.”
He nodded and stepped outside in his bare feet. He didn’t think he’d ever get used to shoes, not even those like the sandals people had worn in his own time. He headed towards his brother who was standing beneath the Goshinboku looking so strange with dark hair and dark eyes, his markings invisible.
“You look stupid,” InuYasha said by way of greeting. “You playing dress up or something.”
Sesshomaru looked at him, unamused. “This is how I appear to humans. It is a concealment and you will wear one as well. It is one of the reasons I am here.”
InuYasha wasn’t sure how he’d feel about looking human all the time and he was sure Kagome would hate it, but he’d worry about that later. “What’s the other reason then?”
“I need your hair,” Sesshomaru replied. “The Tetsusaiga should be able to cut it if you desire it to be so.”
“What? Why the hell would I want to cut my hair?” InuYasha demanded. “What could you need it for? And besides I’m pretty sure Kagome would kill me. Cut your own damn hair.”
Sesshomaru took a slow breath. “If cutting your hair might mean the difference between her life and death would you be persuaded? It should take no more than two or three days to grow back in any case.”
InuYasha knew his brother wasn’t just fucking with him. He really thought having his hair could somehow be used to protect Kagome and that being the case he didn’t hesitate. He drew his sword in one hand and gathered his hair in the other, cutting it all off at the nape of his neck in a single clean stroke. He held out the mass of hair in his hand.
“Now mine as well,” Sesshomaru said. “Bakusaiga can not cut it.”
“Shit, you’re serious?” InuYasha asked. Sesshomaru gave him a dirty look. “Oh that’s right I forgot. This Sesshomaru is always fuckign serious. All right then, here goes.” Once it was done InuYasha laughed. “You look even stupider now.”
“I would advise you to look in a mirror before casting aspersions little brother,” Sesshomaru told him. He withdrew something from his inner pocket and handed it to InuYasha. “Wear this on your person and you will not have to wear that ridiculous bandana. As too many people have seen you as you are, it will not alter your hair or eye color, merely mask the features of your youkai heritage.”
He took the fang which had a hole through and felt the magic on it. He looked down and realized that he couldn’t see his claws anymore. He shrugged and tucked it into his pocket. “So you gonna tell me what I chopped off all our hair for?”
“No,” Sesshomaru said with the barest hint of a smile and then he disappeared into a ball of light.
“Asshole!” InuYasha called after him before shaking his head and going back in the house.
“Inu- Oh my!” Asami said. “What have you done? Kagome is not going to be happy. I hope you had a very good reason.”
“Keh, I do, or at least I think I did,” he told her. “Sesshomaru said he needed it for something that had to do with protecting her. He said it will only take a couple of days to grow back anyway.” He pulled off the bandana and hung it up and heard Kagome’s mother gasp.
“Where are your ears? Please tell me you didn’t have to cut those off as well,” she said.
He shuddered at the thought but pulled the fang out of his pocket and set it on the table. “It’s a spell.”
Her eyes went to the top of his head where his ears had reappeared. “She isn’t going to like that either.”
He grinned. “Don’t I know it, but Sesshomaru says I need to wear it when I’m out around humans. I don’t imagine I’ll be wearing it much around here though. Kagome would never stand for it.”
Her mother laughed. “Definitely not. Are you hungry? I could make you something.”
“Nah, that’s okay,” he told her. “I think I’ll just go sneak in a couple more hours with Kagome and eat when she does.” He flushed as her mother looked at him knowingly and only then realized what he had said. “Shit, sorry.”
“Don’t ever apologize for loving my daughter the way you do,” Asami said. “Cherish every minute. Even if I have faith in both of you and most especially in you to protect her, you never know what can happen or how much time you really have.”
InuYasha watched as she dabbed at her eyes with her apron. “I wish I could have met her father. He must have been a good man to have been loved so much by a woman like you.”
She sniffled a little as she smiled. “Kind of like the man a woman like my daughter would love. Now go on back to her.”
He went back up to the room he shared with his wife and locked the door. He quickly shed the clothing he had put on to meet with his brother in the hopes that when Kagome did wake up she might be tempted. She stirred as he slipped back into bed beside her.
She blinked at him with tired eyes as she lifted her head. “Where were you?”
“Sesshomaru came by,” he replied. “It’s still early yet. You can go back to sleep.”
She nodded and rested her head on his shoulder and then frowned as something tickled her cheek. She sat up and touched the cut end of his hair. She looked at him with wide eyes. “InuYasha, what have you done!?”
“Keh, it’ll grow back,” he said.
“I don’t care if it will grow back,” she told him. “Your hair. Your beautiful hair. How could you just cut it off without even telling me? The only thing I would hate more is if it had been your ears.”
“Damn what is with you and your mother thinking I would cut off my own ears,” he questioned.
“I didn’t mean, I don’t think you would, but your hair,” she lamented. “I loved your hair like it was. It felt so good running my fingers through it and tangling them in it while you make love to me. I love you no matter what but I wish you would have said something to me first, given me some warning.”
“I only did it because Sesshomaru said he needed it,” InuYasha told her. “He had me cut his too and said it will grow back in two or three days. Can you stand to look at me like this for that long?”
Her face softened and she leaned down kissing him softly. “Don’t be stupid. You’re still my InuYasha, the most handsome hanyou in the whole world. Did he say why he needed it?”
“No,” InuYasha replied as he rolled over so that he was on top of her. “He might have told me if I hadn’t said he looked stupid when I saw him.”
“You did not,” she said.
“It’s not my fault. He did look stupid,” InuYasha told her. “His hair was black and his markings were gone. Even his eyes were dark. It was fucking weird. Apparently it’s some spell he wears around humans and he said I have to wear one too. I guess he was easing me into the idea by not wearing it before.”
Kagome frowned. “Does that mean you’ll look like you do on your human night all the time? I don’t like it. I only like you to look human when you’re supposed to.”
He smiled. “I knew you’d feel that way. He said mine only hides my demonic features since so many people have already seen my real hair and eye color.”
“Even still, these are my ears,” she said reaching up to rub one.
“I think I only have to keep it on me when we leave the shrine,” he told her as his eyes fell closed. “Like wearing shoes. Ah hell, woman, that feels good. Shit get the left one.”
She giggled, but complied with his request bringing up her other hand. “I guess it will be okay so you don’t have to wear the bandana since I know it’s uncomfortable for you, but at home I want to see them.”
“Sounds good to me,” he groaned his body rocking against hers. “Sorry, can’t help it. Feels so good.”
“Unless you aren’t planning to finish what you’ve started then you have nothing to apologize for,” she told him.
He growled and she smiled as he buried his face against her throat. “You know me. I always finish what I start.”
She laughed as his breath tickled her. “That’s what I’m counting on, anata.”
As he kissed her tenderly she told herself she wasn’t going to think about anything but how much she loved him, how good it felt when he touched her. Nothing and no one was allowed to come between them, to be a part of them. He looked down at her his expression soft, serious, loving and brushed his thumb across her cheek. She turned her head capturing the tip it between her teeth offering him a sucking kiss before releasing it.
He groaned a little and reached between them, sliding into her slowly. She wrapped her arms around him, wanting him as close to her as he could possibly be, to feel the heat of his skin against her. Her body welcomed him and she breathed out his name. Their eyes met and she held his gaze as he moved within her.
Suddenly she found herself overcome. “I love you.”
He buried his face against her throat. “Don’t ever leave me.”
She shook her head as a tear rolled from the corner of her eye and into her hair. “Never.”
Tomorrow they would face Naraku and they would kill him once and for all because there was no other way it could end. She refused to believe that the fates would allow them such a small taste of the happy ending they had fought so hard for. He would fight for her and she would fight for him and they would live for each other.
~ * ~
Kagome sighed as she listened to the steady beating of his heart. He hadn’t even questioned it when she’d asked him after breakfast if he would take her up into the Goshinboku. She didn’t know how long they’d been there, but it didn’t really matter.
He ran his fingers through her hair. “Your mother says if we’re hungry lunch is ready.”
“Is it lunch time already?” she murmured without lifting her head. “Do you want to go in?”
“No,” he replied. “Not unless you want to eat.”
She shook her head. “I just want to stay here with you like this.”
“You want me to go in and tell her?” he asked.
“She’ll figure it out,” Kagome said quietly as she closed her eyes.
She felt him place a kiss on the top of her head and that was the last thing she remembered until he was urging her gently awake. She lifted her head and rubbed her eyes, noticing right away that it was late in the afternoon, heading towards evening.
“Sesshomaru just got here,” he told her. “He’s waiting for us inside.”
“You should have woken me,” she said. looking at him. “I can’t imagine it was much fun for you sitting here all afternoon while I was sleeping.”
He cupped her cheek in his palm, brushing his thumb over her lips. “More than you might think. If I wasn’t exactly where I wanted to be then I just would have gotten down and carried you inside.”
She smiled. “Careful, I might start to think you like spending time with me.”
He snorted. “I wouldn’t go that far, woman.”
She just rolled her eyes but giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck. He held her firmly and then slipped down off the branch they were sitting on, landing lightly at the base of the tree. He set her on her feet and she took his hand in her hers before they set off towards the house.
Sesshomaru was standing in the corner of the room, and her mother was at the stove putting on a kettle to boil some water. On the table was a large white box and she looked to InuYasha who just shrugged.
“Sesshomaru what is this?” she asked.
“Open it and find out,” he replied.
With nothing else to be done she carefully removed the lid and parted the tissue paper inside. She lifted out a folded red garment of some kind and realized as she held it up that it was a hakama and that the material was a familiar one. “This is fire rat fur.”
“Not as easy to come by as it once was,” he offered.
Next she pulled out a white hakui. She held it up and when the light hit it she realized that there were actually two distinct shades of silver thread woven into it that reminded her very much of… “This is why you wanted his hair and yours is here too.”
“Spider youkai silk woven with my hair and InuYasha’s impenetrable to all but the strongest youkai blades,” Sesshomaru told them.
“Shit, Sesshomaru, this is…” InuYasha tried.
“I believe the word you are searching for is, thank you,” he said.
InuYasha really couldn’t believe it. Sesshomaru had changed so much in five hundred years it was hard to accept. “Why?”
“The robes of a miko have always been armor of a sort,” Sesshomaru told him. “It is only fitting that this is ended as it began. And any sister-in-law of this Sesshomaru will not be permitted to come to harm because she is not equipped with the strongest protection I can provide, aside from you of course, little brother.”
Kagome couldn’t help herself as she hugged the tall youkai around the middle. InuYasha chuckled as his brother looked completely lost as to how to respond. Kagome blushed and stepped back beside her hanyou, relieved when he put his arm around her waist to let her know that he didn’t care that she had been so affectionate towards Sesshomaru. It had been worth it just to see the look on his face.
“I’m sorry,” she said quickly. “I just, thank you so much.”
“Hn, you are welcome,” Sesshomaru replied recovering himself. “I was informed that the small amount of InuYasha’s youki within you and your… close contact with him will see to it that they are able to clean and repair themselves just as InuYasha’s robes do. I will return tomorrow morning and then we will finish this once and for all.”
The mood at dinner was a somber one, but InuYasha was relieved that in spite of that he could still feel Kagome’s usual hopeful optimism instead of resignation, even if it was a bit subdued. He had to admit he was feeling a little better knowing that she would be protected by the robes Sesshomaru had made for her.
He was determined to rid the world of Naraku once and for all and then to really start living his new life with Kagome. He knew he had a lot to learn about her world, but he would figure it out, whatever it took. Her family would no doubt help him find his way and surprisingly he was fairly certain that his would too.
Kagome’s hand came to rest on his thigh under the table and he covered it with his own. It was amazing how much he could feel in that small gesture. She was with him, always, sharing his determination, and the steadfast belief he refused to let go of that their future together had only just begun.
Tonight they would go to bed and he would make love to her. She wouldn’t be satisfied with only once. To his never ending contentment, she almost never was, but tonight she would want him until they were both exhausted and collapsed, arms and legs tangled together and utterly fulfilled. She would look into his eyes and tell him that she loved him and that tomorrow was only going to be the first day of the rest of their lives. He wouldn’t have to say anything for her to know that she was everything to him, but he would tell her anyway.
And tomorrow, tomorrow they would face whatever Naraku threw at them side by side. The would fight for each other, protect each other and in the end they would send that bastard straight to hell.
