It wasn’t easy to find time to be together but both she and InuYasha were very motivated. So far they hadn’t found anything else interesting in the scrolls as far as the start of the war was concerned. Most of what they had come across the last few weeks were herbal remedies and spells, which made sense in its own way because it was the kind of information Kikyou would want to leave behind to help her daughter when she became the village miko or for whoever else might take her place once she was no longer a miko, but InuYasha’s wife.
She blinked slowly as she stared up at the ceiling and a smile spread across her face. InuYasha was supposed to come over today and after three days without him she was looking forward to it more than she could say. She stretched and sat up, swinging her legs over the side of the bed. She put her feet on the floor and stood up only so immediate sit back down as wave of dizziness and nausea washed over her. She covered her hand with her mouth and darted for the bathroom.
She fell to her knees and as her stomach heaved. Between bouts of sickness she reached up and grabbed a hair band off the counter and tied her back out of the way. She didn’t know what was wrong with her since she had felt fine upon going to bed the night before. She lowered the lid and then reached up and flushed the toilet.
She rested her head on the cool plastic and it made her feel a little better. She promised herself that she would get up in just a few minutes. She closed her eyes and took several slow breaths, and realized that she could feel the slightest trace of youki and it was very close. She concentrated on the source and realized with a gasp that it was coming from within her. She placed a hand on the flat of her stomach and tried to see what else she could feel.
She smiled as she felt the spark of life and the way her reiki was surrounding it, protecting it within her. A secret worry lifted from her heart. Apparently a miko and someone with youkai blood could produce a child together and her reiki would not try to purify such a life within her, but while she was relieved on that account a part of her was terrified.
She had to tell InuYasha and had no idea how he would react. Of course he no doubt knew how babies were created and he knew they hadn’t been taking any precautions but he was also probably unsure that it was even possible for them to have a child together. Beyond that it was likely that her own people were not going to be pleased with their great miko carrying a part youkai child. Would this ruin the peace she had been working towards?
She pushed herself up from the floor. She needed time to think about how to handle this and InuYasha was supposed to be coming by to work today. She went to her bed and sat down, taking the phone in her hand.
“Hey,” he said his tone more than enough to tell her that he was pleased to hear from her.
“Hey,” she replied. “I’m really sorry but I don’t think we can work today. I don’t feel well at all.”
“You okay?” he asked.
She smiled a little at the concern in his voice, and hated that she was about to lie to him. “I think it’s just a stomach bug.”
“You want me to come over?” he questioned. “I could grab some soup or something?”
“Thank you, really, but I’ll be okay. I just need to rest, I think,” she told him. “I really wanted to see you today, but it would probably be better if you didn’t come over. I just, I don’t want you to see me like this. I know it’s stupid, but I would feel better if you didn’t.”
“Keh, you’re right. It is stupid, but if it’s what you want, I do it,” he said. “Just promise to call me if you get worse or it you need something.”
“I promise,” she agreed. “I love you.”
“Me too,” he replied.
Kagome hung up and lay back onto her bed. She rested her hands over her belly and stared at the ceiling. A part of her was happier than she could say to be having a baby with the man she loved, but it was going to cause all sorts of problems.
It wasn’t that her people would care that she was pregnant, not after how they had been harping on her since her mother’s death about carrying on the line of Midoriko, but they would care that the baby was at least part youkai. That was also something she hadn’t considered. What were the chances her part youkai child would have reiki of its own? The phone rang and she jumped. Shaking her head she sat up and reached for it, frown at the unfamiliar number.
“Hello?”
“Miko-sama, I hope you remember me,” a female voice said. “Inu-onii-chan gave me your number in case there was ever an emergency and I couldn’t reach him. Anyway, I felt like you might need to talk to me so I called. I’m sorry if I was wrong.”
Kagome swallowed past the lump in her throat. “Of course I remember you and you weren’t wrong. In fact, I could really use someone to talk to right now.”
“Would it be better if I came to shrine?” she asked. “Inu-onii-chan told me it’s probably the safest place in the city, just in case I ever needed somewhere to go.”
“He right about that and I don’t want to trouble you , but I really would like it if you came over,” Kagome told her.
“Then I’ll be there soon,” Shiori replied. “It will all be okay, Miko-sama, or it can be, and I have faith in you and in Inu-onii-chan, so try not to worry too much.”
~ * ~
Kagome opened the front door and stepped back, letting the young bat hanyou inside. “I’m sorry, I’m such a mess.”
Shiori smiled and shook her head as she slipped off her shoes. “You don’t need to apologize.”
Kagome led the way into the living room and they both sat on opposite ends of the sofa. She regarded the other woman and then asked, “So do I need to say it or do you know?”
“I have my suspicions,” Shiori admitted. “When I read you almost all of the possible futures included a little surprise for you and Inu-onii-chan, one that brings great joy, but also could potentially cause big problems.”
Kagome nodded. “I don’t know what to do. I didn’t even know that it would be possible. I never even considered this could happen. I guess I was just so caught up in being with him that I wasn’t thinking about the possible consequences.”
“I understand,” Shiori assured her. “Love makes your lose you head sometimes.”
“I mean, don’t get me wrong, I am not unhappy to be having a baby,” Kagome said. “I want this baby more than I ever imagined and I’m so happy that it’s even possible but what if this ruins everything?”
“It doesn’t have to ruin anything, Miko-sama. I know that for certain,” Shiori told her. “You, Inu-onii-chan, and your baby have the power to usher in a new world of peace for both my kind and yours. The road will not be easy, but I believe in that future.”
“Really?” Kagome asked wiping away an errant tear.
Shiori nodded. “You have come so far already, further than you know, towards that future. Just keep going and keep trusting Inu-onii-chan and I am certain you won’t fail.”
“I lied to him today,” Kagome admitted quietly. “I couldn’t, I didn’t know how to tell him so I lied and said I was sick. I told him not to come, even though I want to have him here to tell me everything is going to be okay.”
“He won’t hold it against you,” Shiori said. “I’ve known him for most of my life and he will understand.”
“Maybe, but will he be happy?” Kagome asked. “I don’t know if I could bear it if he doesn’t really want this. What if he blames me?”
“Do you really think that he would?” Shiori questioned. “He knows how babies are created and it’s as much his doing as yours. More than that, he wants a family. I know he does. It’s why he’s always taking in strays like me. Problems and fears aside, he’s going to want this baby, Miko-sama, in a way that I think is going to surprise you both.”
Kagome found it in herself to smile a little. Shiori’s faith was so sincere that she couldn’t help but feel reassured. “Thank you, for everything. I should have found a way to tell you before now, and it is such a relief to have someone I can talk to about all of this.”
“You can call me anytime, Miko-sama,” Shiori said.
“Perhaps one day you will officially be my Miko-onee-sama. Now why don’t I go make you some tea before I go and then you can call him.”
Kagome nodded. “I think I have some ginger crackers in the cabinet too, if you wouldn’t mind.”
Shiori found her own way to the kitchen and when she returned several minutes later it was with a small plate of ginger crackers and a steaming teapot and everything else she might need to pour herself a cup of the comforting liquid.
“I can see myself out, Miko-sama and remember you can call me anytime you need to talk or for anything else,” Shiori told her.
Once the bat hanyou was gone and she had managed to sip down a cup of tea, Kagome pulled out her phone so that she could call InuYasha. Her hands trembled as she opened her contacts and found his name. In spite of her earlier confidence in Shiori’s words, she found her fears creeping back into her heart. She pressed called quickly before she lost her nerve.
“InuYasha, can you talk?” she asked.
“Yeah, it’s good,” he replied.
Kagome swallowed past the lump in her throat. “I changed my mind. I really want to see you. Can you come over?”
InuYasha heard something in her voice that she didn’t say. She didn’t just want to see him. She needed him. “I’ll be there soon.”
While she waited for him to arrive it occurred to her that she was going to have to find some way to conceal the youki of the baby at least for now. Maybe when the scrolls were finished and the truth was out she wouldn’t have to worry, but for now it wouldn’t be safe to have the parentage of the father so obviously known.
She went to her office in search of something to tie a spell to that would hide the youki within her. As she looked around the room her eyes settled on a small beaded rosary that had belonged to her mother. Her father had given it to her for some reason or another and she had never taken it off. It wasn’t particularly special or valuable but when a miko wore something for such a long time, it tended to absorb her reiki by contact, and when her mother had died she had taken comfort in being able to feel her still within the beads.
The charm she would place on it would be made even stronger with the reiki of another miko so deeply ingrained. She picked it and closed her eyes, focusing her power. She poured her desire into the rosary along with her power and when it was done she could feel the spell, read its intent and she just knew it was going to work. She slipped it over her wrist and went back downstairs.
She poured herself another cup of tea and nibbled on a few crackers as she waited for InuYasha to arrive.
“Come in,” Kagome called as he knocked.
InuYasha slipped off his shoes and then went to the living room, where Kagome was curled up on the sofa. A pot of tea and some crackers were sitting on the table. He sat down beside her and pulled her into his arms. Almost at once she started crying softly her face pressed into his chest. He did his best to soothe her. Her skin was slightly warm and something about her felt different. It was barely noticeable and he doubted anyone who wasn’t as close to her as he was would have picked up on it.
“Talk to me,” he said as he smoothed her hair. “Whatever it is you can tell me.”
“I know, but I’m afraid,” she admitted. “I trust you and I love you, but it isn’t an easy thing, and lied to to you earlier on the phone. I regretted it before I even said the words. I hope you can forgive me.”
She sniffled and pressed her nose against the underside of his chin. She was seeking his reassurance in a way that spoke to his youkai, even if she didn’t realize what she was doing on a conscious level, and he could tell that she needed it.
He didn’t know why she would have lied to him, but he knew she was sorry for having done it and that was enough. “You’re telling me the truth now and that’s what matters. I love you, Kagome,” he told her. “Let me help you.”
She took one of his hands and held it against her stomach. Once she was satisfied that he wasn’t going to move it away, she removed the enchanted rosary from her wrist. She watched his face to see his reaction as he realized what he was feeling.
He blinked, looked at her, and then down at his hand. “Youki. Kagome, I feel youki coming from you.”
She bit her lip. “Yes.”
He lifted his gaze to match hers. “A baby, my baby.”
“Yes,” she said again and then held her breath. Slowly as a smile spread across his face, the aching in her chest eased. He held her face in his hands and kissed her softly. She hugged him tightly and buried her face against his throat. “You’re happy then?”
“Keh, the woman I love is having my child,” he replied.
“Hell, yes I’m happy.”
“Me too,” she said looking up at him.
“Yeah?”
She nodded. “I just worried about what might happen.”
“Nothing is going to happen,” he said with a growl. “I’ll protect you, Kagome, you and our baby, no matter what. I swear it.”
He made the promise without thinking and in that moment he realized that Kagome was his mate. From that second on the rest of the world could go to hell if they didn’t like it. If they had to run away together to someplace no one would ever find them then that’s what they would do, but he was never giving her up, not for anyone.
“Besides, maybe all this shit will be over before the baby comes,” he said. “You found a way to hide the youki, with that rosary and it won’t matter to your people that you are pregnant, right?”
Kagome shook her head. “No, in fact they will probably be relieved. I’m the last direct descendant and there has been a lot of pressure for me to hurry up and continue the line. They’ll be curious about whom the father is, but no one will ask me outright.”
“Okay, then we have some time,” he said. “You might have to lie a little about how far along you are since my mom only carried me for seven months, but just by a couple of weeks so that when the baby comes it’s not too soon, but hopefully by then it won’t matter.”
Kagome didn’t know why she had been so afraid. She should have trusted in his love for her. She wouldn’t make that mistake again. “I love you so much. Promise me that no matter what happens we’ll find a way to be together.”
He brushed a hair back off her cheek. “I promise.” He buried his face in her hair and then nuzzled her neck. “Kagome, I know it’s too dangerous now, but I’m hoping that when this is all over, you’ll agree to be mine forever.”
Kagome lifted her head. A soft gasp escaped her. “You’re not just talking about being together. You’re telling me that I’m your mate.”
“Keh, smart and beautiful,” he said. “How’d I get so lucky?”
She blinked back her tears. With her long life he didn’t have to tie them together to keep her from growing old and dying while he was still young, but he wanted to. “I’m already yours. I can’t think of a stronger motivation to hurry up and figure out how all this started when it means that I’ll get to have you for the rest of my life and whatever follows.”
“Good because, I wasn’t going to let you go no matter what you said,” he teased as he nuzzled her neck. “Now how long will it be before someone notices?”
She closed her eyes and let herself enjoy the way he was nipping at her throat. “Hmm, that depends. I’ve masked the youki, but there are a few people sensitive enough to notice the change in my reiki. Not long I would say, a week or two maybe less.”
He lifted his head. “You said no one will ask you, but there are going to be suspicions. Who will they assume the father is?”
Kagome didn’t have to consider it long to know that there really was only one person who would make sense. “Miroku. I’m not really close to anyone else. Mama said The Great Miko should be careful to avoid getting to close to anyone for fear it might undermine my authority.”
There was something about her tone that told him she had more in common with him that he might have really understood before now. “I guess being The Great Miko isn’t any easier than being a hanyou is it?”
She brushed her lips across his. “But we have each other now, so neither one of us has to be lonely anymore.”
He touched her lips lightly with his fingers. “The monk, do you think he would help you?”
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“It pisses me off just thinking about this, but they would have even less reason to be curious about your pregnancy if he didn’t deny being the father,” he told her. “I hate it, but if it would keep you safe, I could deal with people thinking the baby was his.”
Her brow furrowed. “I don’t know. He’s going to know he isn’t the father, obviously, but if I ask him to do this, then I’m going to have to tell him who the real father is.”
“Do you trust him not to reveal your secret, even if he won’t agree to what we want him to do, and even if he can’t accept us?” InuYasha asked.
“Even if he hated me, of felt like I was betraying our people, he still wouldn’t hurt me like that,” she said.
“Then I say we tell him the truth,” he told her. “I trust you and if you say he won’t endanger your safety then he won’t. I think it’s our best chance to keep this a secret as long as possible so that you and our baby will be safe. It’s the only way I can’t think of to protect you when I can’t be with you.”
“Will you stay with me when I tell him?” she asked. “He might come to accept it, but he probable going to be very upset with me at first.”
“Keh, idiot woman, I’d never leave you side if I had any choice,” he told her as he cupped her cheek in his hand. “Of course, I’ll stay with you.”
She smiled at him. “Then I’ll call him now. Better to get it over with, I think.”
