"Hello?" he called, listening for any signs of life. "Mrs.H? Souta? Anyone here?"
A disgruntled mewling sound echoed from the direction of the living room, and moments later Buyo stumbled sleepily into the square of afternoon light streaming in from the open doorway.
"Hey, Buyo," Yutaka called to the feline. "You wouldn't happen to know if anyone's home, would you?"
The cat cast him a disparaging glare before turning tail and padding back into the shade of the couch.
"I'll take that as a no..."
Walking back to the car, he ducked down low, wrapping an arm about Kagome's shoulders, the other below her knees, and lifting her slowly out of the seat. He carried her to her doorway, kicking off his shoes and nudging hers until they fell to the floor.
"No offense," he murmured as he walked with her to the big cream-colored couch, "but this as about as far as I can take you."
Setting her down, he took a moment to look his friend over. She'd cried herself to sleep, refusing to tell him what had happened. Her cheeks were smeared with half-dried tears, her lashes clumped and brow still furrowed. Tiny hands clutched at the material of her jacket, and she curled further into herself, a shiver running along her spine.
Sighing, Yutaka looked about for something to cover her with. He spotted a blanket in the recliner Mrs.Higurashi normally sat in and grabbed it, unfolding it and covering the sleeping girl before heading to the door. Setting the keys on one of the little hooks in the hall, he looked back once before pulling on his shoes and turning the lock.
"Look after her, Buyo," he called to the cat, receiving an irritated 'meow' in answer.
Pulling the door shut, he made his way back down the driveway.

"Inuyasha... Glad you could make it."
He stopped in his tracks. Something in that tone, in that voice, sent a spark running through the back of his mind. Some long-forgotten memory, or the residual backwash of an event he'd chosen to disregard. Teeth clenched, he looked up into the all-too-familiar face.
"Touran," the name fell from his lips like a curse. "Long time no see."
The woman smiled broadly, batting long lashes at him in mock flirtatiousness.
"You do remember me! I'm honored."
He strode forward, grabbing a hearty handful of her blouse, and hauling her forward into the full impact of his glare.
"Careful, Inuyasha," she chided, using delicate but obscenely powerful hands to pry his fingers away. "You don't want to draw attention now, do you?"
He eyed the people hurrying to get by them, ignoring the gaping stares from the few who stopped to watch.
"Come with me," Touran commanded, turning and walking in the direction he'd been going.
"The hell I will," he spat. "I'm here to see Amaru, not your traitorous ass."
At the last comment, she whirled, eyes narrowed as she glared at him heartily. Even now, after decades of conditioning, that stare still sent shivers down his spine. But he refused to give in to the woman's threat.
"You'd do well to listen, Inuyasha," she hissed. "That is... if you want to know why that pretty little friend of yours ran off in such a hurry."
That caught his attention. Growling lowly, he made to step forward. A smile spread across the woman's lips as she turned jauntily, practically skipping down the sidewalk with a raging Inuyasha in tow. They continued on, passing the canopied place settings of Flags, further south and away from the heavy traffic of the frenzied humans. Inuyasha's eyes never left the cat demon's back, bitterness rising within him the further along they went.
"Where the hell are you going, anyway?" he yelled at her as they meandered through a small group of shrine-goers to emerge next to a car park.
"I suppose I should tell you there was no message from Amaru," Touran called back to him without turning. "It was Angie that sent the note to you. To get you to come here to see me. Smart woman, Angie. I wouldn't have thought to do that, myself. But she at least gave me just the right leverage to do this."
Without warning, she turned on him, striking out with an open fist to the chest and knocking him backward to the concrete gateway. Giving him little time to react, she grabbed his shirt front, spinning them down until he laid on the cold, hard ground, her thighs coming up to straddle his hips.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" he snarled, teeth bared as he pushed away from the ground.
"Be still," was her simple reply. Her hands were like steel, clamping down on his shoulders and shoving him back into a prone position.
"I like things a little rough, but you're gonna have to go through my wife before you can have your way with me," he grunted in sarcasm, glaring up at her in nothing short of fury.
"Your ego is just beyond inflated, isn't it?" Touran laughed. "But what you don't understand is that I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing it for Sesshoumaru."
"Sesshoumaru asked you to molest his brother in a back alley outside Shinjuku?" an amused voice asked from somewhere above them.
Inuyasha's eyes searched the dim entry to the parking garage, widening slightly as the figure came into view. He shook his head slowly, suppressing a groan as not just Shippou, but his conniving miko wife, stepped down the ramp to where he now lay.
"Even I wouldn't wish a punishment like that on you, Inuyasha," the kitsune went on. "Outside Kobe, maybe, but not Shinjuku.
"Shut up and help me, you damned bastard!" he howled, trying to shake the feline loose.
"Of course we'll help," Tsuyako replied, kneeling close enough to get a good view, but far enough to remain out of reach of the dog demon's claws. "After our friend here explains what she's up to."
Shippou took a seat at his wife's side, greeting the other woman nonchalantly. "It's been a while, Touran. Funny we'd run into each other like this. Last time I saw you, you were in almost that exact same position."
"Would you two shut up and fucking help me?!" Inuyasha bellowed.
"I guess you're right," Touran laughed, relaxing her grip just a little as she continued to ignore the hanyou's protests. "Only this time, I'm not trying to kill the boy. Just... distract him a little."
"Distract?" Tsuyako echoed the word curiously, peering down into Inuyasha's indignant golden eyes.
The older woman settled into a more comfortable position, tossing a lock of hair over her shoulder. "If you must know, I'm here on business. I received a call from Angela a few days ago. It would seem our local demon lord has his eyes set on a certain ex-shrine maiden."
"So we've heard," Tsuyako put in, smiling slightly. "What does this have to do with you?"
"Why, everything, of course," Touran smiled broadly. "Angie felt I was worth relying on to help keep the plan running in the right direction. I'd be killing a whole flock of birds with one great big rock, so to speak. My lust for torturing our little pup here would be fully catered to. I'd be laying in the lap of luxury and the cradle of trust at the hotel. And what better way to repay Amaru for bringing my family back to me, than to bring him a family of his own?"
"What?" Inuyasha's startled gasp was barely loud enough to be heard.
"I mean... It's obvious he's going to take this one all the way, isn't it?" Touran went on. "He's pined after the idea long enough. Human lives being as flimsy as they are, he won't leave anything to chance. And neither will I."
"So," Shippou breathed, nodding slowly to himself, "Angie thinks he'll be needing a little help to make this whole ordeal run smoothly... And I'm guessing she hasn't told Amaru about any of this. We were asked to come here for the girl, but Amaru obviously hasn't felt compelled to let Angie know about it either. He's really looking forward to surprising her, isn't he? Well, that's if the plan doesn't fall through..."
"What's he plan to do?" the hanyou piped in, frowning as he tried to understand the idiotically cryptic conversation. "What's going on here?!"
"I suppose it's a good thing we ran into each other, then," Tsuyako ignored the outburst. "I think things will get much easier as long as we all work together. Don't you two agree?"
They all nodded, Touran adding a swift elbow to the ribs as Inuyasha tried once again to throw her off.
"I owe our leading lady my thanks for sending him my way," the cat demon chuckled. "I was a little sidetracked, what with getting situation and all. I hoped to make it a personal mission to keep a close eye on this one, but I guess you beat me to the punch, didn't you?"
"As a matter of fact, no," the miko contradicted. "It's like Shippou said, we're here to keep an eye on the girl. Or more to the point, to oversee the end result of all the plotting and planning."
"You bitch!" Inuyasha interrupted, throwing his full body forward with the phrase directed at Tsuyako. "What's he gonna do to Kagome?! Tell me!! I swear, if you let him hurt her... I'll kill you! All four of you! GODDAMMIT! Get off of me!!"
They all stared down at him wordlessly.
"We'd better continue this little conference somewhere more private," Shippou murmured. "Tsuyako? You wouldn't mind honoring us with a show of your heavenly persuasiveness, would you?"
"Why, of not course, darling!" his wife laughed, rubbing her hands together giddily.
Sweat broke out on Inuyasha's brow at the familiar excited grin that suddenly brightened the woman's face, and his struggles doubled as she began to rise.
"No! No!! Get the fuck away from me!!"
Fingers aglow with the pearly essence of purifying power, the miko drew closer to his left side. "Oh, it's not so bad, Inuyasha. Just a little poke here, and a little prod there. You won't feel a thing... after the first few minutes or so..."
Shippou laughed uproariously, looking onward as the cat demon shifted out of the way to allow his wife better access. "Look at the bright side, Inuyasha. When this is all over, you won't remember a thing!"
The hanyou grunted, shaking his head from side to side, trying hard to keep the woman at bay.
"I really am sorry about this, pup," Touran sighed, her remorseful tone a contradiction to the evil grin on her face. "But you see... I have to take a stand for our Lord. He did save my siblings, after all. Happiness for happiness. I owe it to him... Now stop your wiggling, and let's take a look at that eye of yours..."
