Chapter 16: I wish there was a place without spies in disguises, And invisible reminders of you The world was dark and Kagome, clad only in a white dress that resembled a night slip, stood at the center of the street. As goose bumps grew on her shoulders she wrapped her arms around her and shivered. Her hair was long now, past her shoulders even, unlike her daily short hair that had only just begun to grow back out. “Hello?” The wind blew and the current carried snow that pelted her face lightly. Ahead of her on the street a lamp illuminated, as if the spotlight on a stage, revealing two characters to her. The two stood face to face, screaming something incomprehensible, shaking fists and pulling at the collar of the other’s shirt. “Hey, what’s going on?” She trotted towards them, her feet bare and red in the snow-coated street. By the time she reached the two she could distinguish them as men, but their faces were covered in the shadows. Reaching out, her hand phased through the man. Her face twisted both in disgust and fear and the man simply pushed her away further into the street. “Hey! Stop fighting. Can you tell me where I am?” The two men turned to her, the first, closest to her, had long hair and the one further back has shorter hair. Again, they said nothing to her, but the man directly in front of her seemed to pause and suck in a breath. He reached out to touch her; hesitant, and just as she decided to reciprocate he turned back and slugged the man behind him. Kagome gasped and brought a hand to her chest, “Please stop it!” Their fighting was becoming rampant, vicious, and horrible, but Kagome could not seem to reach them. It was as if her voice could not reach them. As she stumbled back into the street, she turned to see two headlights coming her way. Kagome awoke with a gasp in her bed, tangled in the bed sheets. The clock read just past four in the morning. The air was heavy and unusually cold for the morning. She wrapped the sheet around her shoulders like a make shift robe and wandered to Inuyasha’s door. It was open a crack and was about to go in. She decided though; if she was going to wake him up she’d better bring food, as backup. The cabinet opened above the refrigerator, once again, revealing more ramen. As she boiled hot water she looked down at her hands and sighed, “Tsuki, what do you think that dream was about?” She didn’t respond. “Gees, are you still sleeping? I know it’s early, but you don’t have to completely ignore me.” Kagome poured herself a cup of tea and huffed, “Tsuki. Seriously.” Finally then, it dawned on Kagome, that Tsuki was not there. She focused as hard as she could but still could not even sense Tsuki inside of her. Leaving the ramen boiling in the pot she ran to the bathroom mirror and put her hand on it, looking at her reflection. Kagome noted she was…possibly shorter? Suddenly Kagome touched her chest, squeezing, realizing they were just a tiny bit smaller. “What’s…going on?” Realizing the stove was still going she ran back into the kitchen to turn it off just as it’s about to overflow. She felt her chest tighten. Where is Tsuki? What was going on? After pouring two bowls of ramen she placed them on the tray and nudged his door open. “Inuyasha?” The room was dark, but on his bed, she saw a formed layered under the lumps of blankets and pillows. She eased the food onto his dresser, pushing around a few of his dirty clothes and keys around. It was rather quiet even for Inuyasha. He didn’t even seem to be snoring. She held the cup of tea to her chest and wandered over to the bed, having completely abandoned the sheet she’d started this adventure with. In nothing but a thin camisole and shorts she eased herself onto his bed. Kagome reached out and touched the top of his head…the black bed of hair. Wait. Black head of hair? Kagome felt herself suck in her breath. Was Kikyo in this bed? Kagome sat frozen and immediately began to take mental pictures of the room and the kitchen. Kagome hadn’t seen an additional pair of shoes by the font door. There were no feminine items other htan her own on the counter in the bathroom. Even in Inuyasha’s room there were no dirty clothes that resembled a woman’s. So why is there black hair? “In…Inuyasha?” she squeaked out. Inuyasha felt someone touching the top of his head. At first he’d tossed it off as a little bug or his own hair, but the touch seemed gentler. Finally he forced open one of his eyes and smiled, seeing Kagome looking down at him. “Hey…is it morning already?” She smiled weakly, trying to hide her confusion and fear. “You can’t smell breakfast already? I made you ramen.” Kagome took a small sip of her tea. Inuyasha sniffed the air and ruffled his nose. He rolled over onto his back, revealing his bare chest to her. Inuyasha tilted his head, “Nope, don’t smell anything.” Kagome forced her smile again and leaned down towards him. At this point Inuyasha thought he was still dreaming. She was so close to him and yet he did not seem intimidated by it. But why did Kagome look so sad or…like she was upset? Somehow he felt his eyes close, so calm and peaceful, prepared for whatever she was set to do. But to his surprise he felt her pick at a strand of her hair. After letting go of his hair she stood and crossed the room to bring the ramen back over to him. Inuyasha sat up and pushed a pillow up behind him and leaned against the headboard. She set the ramen in his lap and sat across from him on the bed, staring at him with so much curiosity and intensity. He felt his heart pitter slightly. In this moonlight, Kagome looked amazingly beautiful. “Inuyasha, did you dye your hair? And…where are your ears?” He blinked and pulled out his hair in front of his eyes, crossing them. “Oh, crap.” Inuyasha patted the top of his head and felt no ears and let out an angry sigh, “Damn.” She reached out and touched his hand, “Hey, Inuyasha? I can’t hear Tsuki anymore.” Kagome bit her lip and sat back, looking down at her own tea. “What’s going with us?” Inuyasha sighed, “I forgot to tell you about this part. It’s the new moon today, isn’t it?” “The new moon?” He nodded and slurped his soup, “Because we are both mixed blood, we will lose our powers on the new moon. It’s just for one day. Right now…we’re entirely human.” “But…why hasn’t this happened before? I’ve been a…I was changed months ago.” Inuyasha scratched his head and sighed, “Probably because of those priestess powers you have. It’s not like we really understand them.” “Oh…okay.” Kagome lowered her head and nodded. Inuyasha looked at her and raised an eyebrow, “What’s the matter, Kagome?” Kagome rubbed her shoulders and shivered, “I just…” Inuyasha put the bowl down and smiled, “It’s only for one day.” “I just can’t believe how…empty I feel, Inuyasha.” He smirked, “At least you didn’t lose your ears. Most of the time you’re in a human body.” Kagome nodded her head and took another sip of her tea again. It was hard to explain how foreign it felt. It was like half of her body was gone… she was lighter…weaker? Even though Tsuki and Kagome fought, it was extremely alienating. Before she realized it, Inuyasha had pulled her into his chest and wrapped her up tight. “I’m sorry I didn’t warn you about it before, Kagome.” Kagome nodded in his chest and hugged herself to him, “How come I never see you like this if it happens every month?” He ran his hands through her hair and looked into the darkness of their room. “I don’t show anyone this…I don’t want anyone to know about it. Hanyous are always called weak…” “Does Kikyo see this?” Inuyasha squeezed her tighter and sighed into her shoulder; “Of course she has…she actually met me when I was this way.” Kagome stared into his chest and frowned lightly, but chuckled happily for him, “Really?” Inuyasha nodded slowly. When he thought of Kikyo and the times they had met, they were so happy then. But yet there was this little spitfire of a girl in his lap, barely dressed. When his beast was with him this was so much easier. He felt this bubbling in chest, like a cauldron. “Yeah…I had been sent to get something for my father and we ran into each other. Keh, literally. Stupid girl thought she could stop me and lost all her groceries.” Kagome smiled to herself, “I see…” her fingers ran along his bare back. “She told me that was when she fell in love with me…” He had been sent out by his stupid brother Sesshomaru to pick up a package from the postal service. It was a package that contained his father’s important documents. Because Inuyasha was still in school, Sesshomaru and father did all of the work. He’d thrown his baseball cap on his head to hide as much of his black hair possible. Box in hand he’d just exited the store when he ran, head first, into someone. “Oye, what the hell? Could you look where you’re going?” The girl on the ground looked up with a fierce face, “Perhaps the gentleman shouldn’t be in such a hurry that you disregard a woman with her arms full.” Inuyasha looked down at her and found her surrounded by a sea of groceries. Realizing he’d created such a mess he threw out a hand to her, “Come on, get up. Let me at least get you off the ground.” “What about the rest of you?” Inuyasha shook his head and looked down at her. For a brief second, it was as if Kagome had become the stand in for Kikyo in his own memory. “What are you talking about?” Kagome looked up and smiled at him, “If I was her, I’d love ever single bit of you, hanyou or human. All of that is a part of you, Inuyasha.” If shocked could be amplified, that would be the look on his face. His eyes grew big like saucers then readjusted in the darkness to closely examine her face. Who on earth was this tiny girl looking at him? He wanted to tell himself that the look in her eyes was love, which meant that she loved him, and just as quickly he turned off that thought. “Kagome…” Kagome pushed herself from his chest and hopped onto the floor. “Come on, Inuyasha, shouldn’t you know that about yourself? If Tsuki is a piece of me, your human day is just a small piece of you.” Why could he…why did he…why was he so hopeful that she meant it? Not as Kikyo…but… “Where…are you going?” It wasn’t even morning, but he didn’t want her to go. Inuyasha wanted her in the bed beside her, in the safety of the sheets, where they could share more stories. Just like the day the two had first met at the café he felt such a strong desire to know more about her… “Can you…stay there, Inuyasha?” He huffed and smiled, without his fangs, “I kinda planned on going back to sleep…but why did you come in here…anyway? Was it just because Tsuki was gone?” Kagome shook her head. Like a little child she held her arms in front of her, bashful and shy. “Would you let me get my sketchpad? I promise I’ll tell you the story.” He could only nod slowly and watch her run to her room next door. After a little bit of shuffling in her own room she returned. Kagome plopped herself down on the end of the bed near his feet. He gestured to the empty space beside her but she ignored him. Kagome began flipping open the pages of her notepad to pull out a fresh clean one. “Now, you can talk to me, but you have to stay pretty still, okay?” Inuyasha had to smile, Kagome was already so focused and in her art world. How had this girl so easily said something about loving him and flipped the switch into another world. “I’ll sit still, but you gotta tell me everything.” Kagome nodded, her head down, but only once in a while would glance up to give him a glance of her beautiful blue eyes. “I had a nightmare.” “You had another one? Even with Tsuki not here?” Kagome nodded and glanced up quickly, already beginning to sketch the basic circles and contours to the face. “Yes…but I’m just afraid…” “Was it really scary? Is that what brought you all the way to me?” “No, that’s not it, Inuyasha.” She leaned over and moved a strand of hair out of his face. Another intimate gesture that sent chills down his spine. Kagome glanced up at him and fixed his eyebrow too, “I’m…I’m pretty sure I had this dream before.” “Ah, so it’s a reoccurring nightmare or something?” Kagome sat back down by his feet and began to stencil in the eyes, “I had this dream…even before Tsuki was with me. That’s what troubles me about it.” Inuyasha raised an eyebrow, “So this was from a while ago? Do you think its just coincidence? Was there something very specific about it?” “Besides me, there are always two people in the street. They’re talking but it gets very violent….” Kagome trailed off at this point. She did not want to tell Inuyasha that she was the one to die in her dreams. If her past dreams were any indication of premonitions or the future, then she as in grave danger. But if she told Inuyasha about this she feared she’d never leave his side. That was not…an undesirable thing, but Kagome needed to keep exploring. She had training and had only just recently regained her freedom. “Do you know what they were talking about?” Kagome shook her head for a response and began on his nose, “It’s always as if they can’t see me, or hear me, but I’m not sure why.” “Well, are they people you know?” Again, she shook her head, “No, but that didn’t stop me from picking out Rin-chan before she go hit by the car. I’m sure that…if it happens…I’ll know in an instant what’s going on.” Inuyasha snapped his finger, “So that is really what’s bothering you! You’re afraid it’s actually going to happen.” “Can you blame me?” she squeaked out, trying to suppress the emotional outbursts in her. “I don’t want anyone to get hurt.” “Kagome, think about how many dreams you do have that don’t come true, yeah? Keh, you’re not some fortuneteller. You ain’t that cool.” Kagome chuckled and looked up from her sketchpad at him, “You have a mean way of comforting me, you know that.” “Keh, it must be one of my human emotions,” he stuck out his tongue at her. Kagome was moved down to the lips as Inuyasha scratched the back of his head, “I didn’t make you mad, did I?” Her smile made his heart melt; it was a full of happiness that he didn’t often get to see. “Of course you didn’t, Inuyasha. I’m sorry that I woke you up so early though…” “Hey, cut that crap already, I told you that I would always be there for you.” Kagome smiled and continued to sketch and for a good while, the conversation between the two had drawn to a close. Despite the quiet between the two, Inuyasha was completely content with it. Her dedication to her work was so…alluring to him. On occasion he would shift and make himself more comfortable, at which Kagome would point, but she didn’t say too much else. Usually his beast could tell if Kagome was holding something back from him, to make sure she was actually okay and got everything off her chest, but for now, this Inuyasha, just had to trust what his eyes said. But the loss of those demon senses proved to be a blessing for him. Usually his beast would sense her beast, a vibe that’s hard to articulate, but the second-presences each carried made them each a little bit more cautious about what was said aloud. Throughout her sketching Kagome would smear things on her face, push back the greasy bangs at the top of her head, and sometimes move about in strange positions. At one point she was leaning on his knees, looking at a certain angle of his face. “Hey, Inuyasha?” Inuyasha shook his head and looked down at her, “Yeah, Kags?” “Do you…want to go out today?” If he could have looked more dumbstruck it would have been too hilarious. He could feel the blush on his ears and cheeks and he looked away. “I kind of planned on hiding away until tomorrow…” “Aw come on, Inuyasha. You have me too. Lets be too silly humans together, just for today!” Kagome tugged on his hand, smearing black onto him. “Please?” Inuyasha sighed and ruffled her hair, “You’re just going to pout and whine if we don’t, aren’t you?” She squeaked with joy and threw her arms around him again. He laughed and when she pulled her face back to look at him, his heart skipped another beat. But before anything else could happen she jumped off the bed and picked up her supplies, “It’s still only morning, so why don’t you go back to sleep and we’ll go out for lunch, okay?” Not waiting for an answer, she pulled his door shut to about a crack, and vanished. Inuyasha let out a loud sign and fell back onto his bed. He heard the shower turn on and the door lock and he pressed his palms into his eyes. Though he didn’t want to admit it, he glanced at his phone. Since walking out on Kikyo at dinner that night he hadn’t spoken to her. But somehow she really hadn’t crossed his mind all that much. The idea of America still loomed over his head. He was in a relationship with Kikyo. “What’s going on with me?” Inuyasha grumbled. He’d been so cautious of her returning in his life. She’d disappeared and still seemed quiet guarded. When she did let her guard down it was like that moment where the two had just met…but Inuyasha was starting to wonder if what they were feeling was being forced. He opened up his phone and dialed. “What are you doing calling me now? Isn’t it like, six in the morning over there?” “Keh, yeah, I got an early wake up call, Miroku.” “Oh? Did a beautiful woman awake you with kisses?” Inuyasha chuckled, “Well, it was a beautiful woman, but she brought me ramen instead.” “Wow, for you that must be heaven.” There was a chuckle between the two. Miroku was sitting at his desk doing work, it already night, “How are you doing though? I haven’t heard from you in a while.” Inuyasha sighed, “It’s the new moon, so I’m human today.” “Ah, so you’re super grumpy?” Inuyasha laughed, “Man, stop being an asshole. It’s not just my full moon, it’s Kagome’s first one too. I guess her priestess powers made things weird, but she’s entirely a human today. She woke me up, she seemed upset about it.” Miroku circled something on the piece of paper below him, “So I guess she brought you food so you wouldn’t get mad. Is she doing better?” “Kagome? Yeah, she’s taking a shower. We’re going out today.” He dropped his pen, “Are you two going out on a date?” “What? Gees MIroku she just wanted me to go out so I didn’t say cooped up all day today. Besides…” “…there is Kikyo,” Miroku finished for him. “But you seem far more energetic about going out today than you have on any of your dates with Kikyo.” “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. She just wants someone to talk to and answer all her questions about being a demon, I get that, but when I’m near her…” “Inuyasha…don’t tell me you’re falling in love with her, are you?” Inuyasha closed his eyes but held back a sigh, “Damnit, no. I just…” Miroku looked down and sighed, “Be careful, my dear friend. There is so much we do not know about her powers, her changes, and her emotional state.” “Be careful---“ “Don’t let her fall in love with you, Inuyasha.” “What?” Inuyasha opened his eyes, “That’s a fuckin’ weird request to make, you Monk. She knows I have Kikyo.” “And right now she has no one, Inuyasha. Sango is just a human and you’re the closest person to understanding her. Do not let her fall in love with you if you cannot love her back. This is not the thing to do to this girl.” “Miroku, come on, she won’t fall in love with me. Give her more faith than that.” “You better watch yourself too, Inuyasha. Don’t fall in love with her if you’re not prepared to say goodbye to Kikyo.” “Damnit dude, I did not call you to be lectured. Between you and Sango it’s like I can’t do anything without hurting her. I’m here for her, I’m the one that lives with her, I will take care of her.” Miroku listened to the dead phone line and sighed, closing it and putting it down on the table. “It’s not that I don’t want you to fall in love with her, Inuyasha….” The Monk pushed back his hair and looked down at the photograph, the one face circled in a crowd, was none other than Koga’s, “I just can’t let you fall in love now, or surely, our dear friend will not recover.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
