Chapter 16 - Backstory
*Abyss & Mystery* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
Inuyasha lay on his back; Kagome curled up to his side with her head on his chest, running his claws up and down her back lovingly, having just woken from their nap. His thoughts were making him insane, and he realized he had to ask, even if he didn't like the answer very much.
"Kagome," he started, his tone hesitant. "How did this happen?"
The miko lifted her head and shot him a confused look. "I told you, I asked Sesshoumaru to leave so we could..."
"No," the hanyou interrupted. "Here. How did we end up here? I guess what I'm asking is how you got mixed up with Sesshoumaru?"
"Are you sure you really want to know?" Kagome asked, concerned. She knew what she would tell him might hurt, but if he truly wanted to know, she would say it anyway. He deserved to know how she hooked up with his brother, because it directly affected him.
"Not really, but I need to. I can't stop thinking about it, trying to figure out when it started, and how you were able to sneak off to see him. I need you to tell me."
*Memory Call* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
"Alright, if you're sure." The miko looked thoughtful for a few moments as she snuggled closer to Inuyasha, who was eagerly awaiting the answers he was searching for. "Well, I guess it started four or five months ago. You were out hunting, and Sesshoumaru showed up looking for any new information on Naraku. The way he looked at me then, it was so intense it gave me goose bumps. I couldn't stop thinking about it."
"I don't remember that."
"I know. For some reason you couldn't sense that he'd been there."
"So, why didn't you guys tell me?" Inuyasha asked in frustration.
"Because he was already gone, and there was nothing you could do about it. We figured there was no reason to get you all worked up. After that, he started coming more often. It was either about Naraku or Rin. He had a lot of questions about how to keep a human child healthy. He only ever wanted to talk to me, and he always seemed so focused on me while we talked. It was weird, but almost nice, like I was interesting or something."

"Bastard must have been masking his scent and aura," the hanyou muttered, angry that this had happened right under his nose, and no one had thought it important enough to share.
"He might have masked his scent, but his aura was always there, brushing up against mine almost affectionately. And don't call your brother a bastard. Remember, things are different now. What happened in the past doesn't matter, because we're all going to be together."
"You finally agreeing to be our mate then?" he asked with a smirk.
"Not for sure, no, but it certainly seems likely. See, this is why I didn't know if I should tell you this. If you're going to get angry about it, I'm not saying another word."
Inuyasha sighed and considered his options for a moment. Could he really hear how Sesshoumaru seduced the woman he loved right out from under his nose without wanting to throttle the taiyoukai when she was finished? He still really wanted to know, so he decided that yes, he could.
"Fine, I won't get mad."
"Promise?" Kagome was extremely hesitant to continue. The last thing she wanted was to create more problems between the brothers, but she understood Inuyasha's desire to know. She felt the same way about him and Kikyo and maybe she might be able to get some answers of her own by the time this conversation was over.
"I promise, wench. Now keep going."
*Remaining Feelings* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
"After a while, we would leave camp to talk. Sometimes he wouldn't even come to get me. He would just send his aura to brush against mine, and I would follow it to where he was waiting. By then, Sesshoumaru was telling me about his life, and eventually I got comfortable enough to tell him some about mine, as well. Then, one day, he kissed me. I hadn't expected it, and I told him right away that I couldn't do that with him. I couldn't betray you like that, by being with your brother. I didn't even give him a chance to answer. I ran back to camp like the devil was on my tail.
"I felt so awful about it. I still loved you. I never stopped loving you, but I was starting to fall for him. I was so confused. He would call for me every day, his aura caressing mine. It felt so desperate, like he needed to see me, but I wouldn't go. Then you and I had a huge fight about your sneaking off every night to see Kikyo. You said that you could do whatever you wanted, that it was none of my business, and I realized you were right. I also realized that if you could do whatever you wanted then so could I, and I wanted to see Sesshoumaru again.”
*Breaking Up is Hard to Do* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
“That fight made it obvious to me that we would never be together, that you would always choose Kikyo over me, and so I did it. I waited until you left camp, like you did just about every night at that time, and I went to see your brother. He was so happy to see me. He didn't say it, but I could see it in his eyes, and that look said everything I needed to know. I was important to him. He needed me. That night, when he kissed me, I let him, and I enjoyed it. I told him about our fight and my realization. Then, he assured me that what was happening between us had nothing to do with you. He wasn't pursuing in me just to hurt you. He was drawn to me almost uncontrollably."
"Bullshit," Inuyasha coughed, causing Kagome to shoot him a glare.
"What did we agree?" she reminded him.
*Nostalgic Back* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
"Yeah, yeah, I know, but 'drawn to you'? That sounds so fucking lame."
"Hmph," Kagome huffed. "I thought it was romantic."
"Sesshoumaru doesn't do romantic. He says what he needs to to get what he wants. He wanted you, apparently."
"Don't you go and try to ruin my good memories." After taking a minute to calm herself, she continued. "After that, we didn't do much talking. We didn't have sex right away. For weeks all we did was make out, but it was incredible. I had no idea he had so much passion inside of him. He made me feel beautiful and important, when all you'd made me feel lately was useless. I was tired of being reminded I was just a poor copy of Kikyo."
Inuyasha was suddenly overwhelmed with guilt. She told him before that she had gotten the impression that they would never be together and that he had chosen Kikyo over her, but not how badly he made her feel about herself. He knew he had been a class A jerk at times, but he never meant to hurt her. He loved her with all of his heart, but he had no idea how to show it. He didn’t really expect they would end up together, since he was nothing but an unworthy, filthy hanyou. Kikyo had drilled that into his head so much that he truly believed that he didn't deserve love.
*Don't Think. Feel!* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
"I'm sorry, Kagome. I didn't mean it. I was just so confused and afraid."
"I know," the miko said softly. "I get it. I don't feel that way anymore, but that's how I felt then. Should I keep going?"
"Yeah," he answered reluctantly. He knew they were getting to the more physical part, but he needed the whole story. He needed to know how she managed to sneak off to see Sesshoumaru, and how much she had lied to him. He needed to know everything so they could finally put it behind them and move forward happily.
"Sesshoumaru never pressured me for more physically. He honestly seemed to be happy with whatever he could get, but more and more I was thinking about it. I wanted to know what it would be like, to be with him completely, and eventually I told him so. He started so slowly and took his time, introducing me bit by bit to physical pleasure. It took nearly two weeks before he finally took my virginity. He was so gentle, and he made it so I never felt any pain.”

"After that, we were like rabbits. I was sneaking off to see him every chance I could. He would meet me at the spring when I went for a bath. When I went home, I would see him before I left and then come back early to spend more time with him before I came back to you and the others. You made it easy for me by going to see Kikyo so much after everyone else was asleep.
“It was exhilarating, knowing that we could get caught. It wasn't like I wanted you to catch us like you did. That was mortifying. But sneaking around added a bit of a thrill to the whole situation. Sesshoumaru seemed addicted to me. If I couldn't sneak away, it made him crazy. When he came and grabbed me that day, the day you caught us together, I hadn't been able to see him for almost two weeks, which was why he did what he did. He was so desperate by the time he kidnapped me, if you can call it that since I was willing, that the sex was incredible.
"It felt so good to know he needed me so badly. I mean, he's the Western Lord. He can have just about any woman he wants, but instead of just finding someone else, he waited for me because he only wanted me." Kagome was silent for a minute before lifting her head once again to look at Inuyasha. "That's about it. Do you have any questions?"
*Guilty Sky* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
Inuyasha considered everything he heard for a moment before shaking his head. "No, but I imagine you do. Kagome, when I was going off to see Kikyo, it wasn't to be with her. We've never done anything. She doesn't still love me, if she ever really did. Honestly, I think she hates me."
"Then why go see her?"
"Sometimes when she calls for me, it's about Naraku, but most of the time... She's lonely. She'll set herself up in a village and everything will be fine for a while until someone finds out that she's dead. Then, no one wants anything to do with her, and she has to leave. It's my fault that she is the way she is, so I try and keep her company."
"It's not your fault, Inuyasha! It's Naraku and Urasue's fault, not yours."
"But it is, Kagome. If it weren't for me, Naraku never would have killed her."
The miko let out a soft laugh. "Yes, he would. He wanted the jewel. He would have attacked her for it no matter what. You were just an easy way for him to do it. You have to stop blaming yourself for everything. So, tell me, are you still going to keep her company?"
"Hell no. She nearly cost me you, and she isn't worth it. You're all that matters to me, Kagome. I love you, and I'm sorry I made you feel so bad that you went to someone else looking for attention and affection."
*Truth of my Destiny* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
"It's alright. Maybe it was supposed to happen. I mean, if you hadn't caught us, we might never have ended up together. What I don't understand is how we ended up in this situation. Whose idea was the sharing thing?"
"It sure as hell wasn't mine," the hanyou declared.
"It was his?" Kagome asked in shock. "How did it happen?"
"I really don't know. When..." Inuyasha swallowed hard, still bothered by what happened. "When you died, I begged him to use his sword to bring you back. I said that if he did, I would leave, and he could have you."
"You did?" she asked, surprised. "Why?"
"Because so long as you were alive, everything would be okay. I couldn't live with the knowledge that I killed you. He pulled his sword and held it over you with this annoyed frown on his face."
"You mean his facial expression changed?" Kagome inquired playfully with a giggle, trying to lighten the mood.
*Endless Puzzle* Stella's Soundtrack Challenge
"Yeah, I know, right? So, he's staring at you, but he's not doing anything. Then, all of a sudden the Tenseiga and the Tetsusaiga pulsed at the same time, and his eyes kind of lit up a little, before his eyebrows furrowed. He still didn't swing the damn sword to bring you back. I have no idea what the hell he was waiting for, but finally he did it, and your heart started beating again. It seemed like forever before you took a breath, and when you did, I turned to leave."
"You were going to leave before I woke up?"
"Well, yeah. I didn't want to have to say good-bye. I had to keep my word and leave you with him and I didn't want to have to tell you that. It... I was being a coward. I didn't know if you preferred him to me and I didn't want to find out. When I went to walk away, he called me back and said that you loved us both, so we would have to learn how to share. I have no idea why he would do that when he could have had you to himself."
"That is odd. We'll have to ask him about that when he gets back."
Inuyasha purred in her ear while running his claws up her back and into her messy black hair. "Here's hoping he's not back for a while." He tilted her head and kissed her passionately, more than eager to get the thoughts of Kagome sneaking around with Sesshoumaru out of his mind. He had his answers, and now he wanted to forget them completely. Thankfully, Kagome was more than willing to distract him. "Shall we have a dip in the spring?"
