Disclaimer: I, in no way shape or form, own anything associated with the Inuyasha franchise. I make no money from this story; it is merely a work of fiction I have written to entertain myself and other fans of this amazing series. |
Now, I know from your
reviews that some of you may be dissatisfied with Sesshomaru’s character in
this story. I understand, but I’m trying to stay true to my own personal
interpretation of the character.
To me, Sesshomaru is
a character who lives for the moment. He never lives for or thinks of anyone
but himself, and while this has ensured his survival, it has left him hollow
and emotionless. Then he meets Rin, a little human girl who doesn’t seem to
fear him and cares for him unconditionally. While he is able to write this off
easily enough when she is a child, it becomes different when he is confronted
with her as an adult. He is immediately attracted to the woman that she has
become. His inner instinct desires her, due to a demon’s need to reproduce. But
there’s something more, something that he can’t quite put his finger on, and
these foreign feelings are what he struggles with as he tries to maintain the
same stoic character that has kept him alive all these years.
Anyway, that’s my
interpretation of Sesshomaru’s character; I’ve tried to remain as close to the
actual character as I could while trying to bring out the other side of
Sesshomaru. It’s not easy, but I think that I manage.
And from what I’ve
read from you guys (and gals, no discrimination here), you think so too.
So, now that all of
that is out of the way, here goes something!
With You, Chapter
Sixteen
The Everlasting Light
Many months passed
between that fateful reunion between Sesshomaru and Rin. Nothing much changed,
except that Sesshomaru’s visits became more frequent. He visited Rin and her
daughter often, always bringing them some sort of gift, whether it was fabric
for a new kimono or a new toy for Saiyuki to play with. Soon, he began to bring
Jaken with him, who almost died of shock when he realized who Saiyuki was.
Another thing that
continued was Sesshomaru’s nightly visits. He routinely spent the night, and it
was easy enough when figure out when he was going to: those were the times when
he would leave Jaken and Ah-Un outside the village.
It was after one of
these nights when something unexpected happened.

It was early dawn,
and the sun was just beginning to peak over the horizon. Rin was sound asleep
(after a particularly intense lovemaking session) and Sesshomaru was nowhere to
be seen. Saiyuki awoke and saw that it was dark. Unfortunately, she was wide
awake and couldn’t go back to sleep.
Stupid screamer. Who screams so early in the morning?
She rubbed her eyes, trying
to get the sleep out of them. It was then that she saw her mother sleeping
soundly on a white kimono.
Well, if I can’t get some sleep…
She crawled over to
her mother and began to shake her lightly. “Mama, mama…”
Suddenly she felt a
hand on her shoulder. She jumped and bared her claws, only to see her mother’s
friend standing behind her wearing nothing but his hakama and his boots. He put
his finger to his lips and slowly shook his head.
She relaxed her hand and looked at her mother
again. She looked so peaceful, sleeping there with a smile on her face. She had
never seen such a happy look on her mother’s face before.
So she stood and
followed her mother’s friend outside, and together they stood there, quietly
admiring the sunrise.

They had been
standing there for a few minutes, and the sun had made it halfway over the
horizon when Sesshomaru felt a tug on his pants. He looked down and saw that
Saiyuki was standing there, her arms outstretched.
Sesshomaru looked at
her for a moment, cocking an eyebrow. He knew what she wanted, but…
But there was
something about the look in her eyes. It bothered him. A lot. He didn’t know
what it was, but he realized that if he didn’t pick her up, she was going to
feel really hurt, maybe even cry. And for some reason, he hated the thought of
seeing Rin’s daughter cry. It made him feel really uncomfortable.
So he sighed, then he
knelt down and lifted her into his arms. She immediately hugged his neck and
laid her head on his shoulder.
Once again,
Sesshomaru was overcome by something unexpected. It was a strange feeling. It
was that feeling of contentment that he felt when he was with Rin. That same
feeling…
And it’s that feeling that keeps you coming back. You like that
feeling, that calm, warm feeling. It’s something you’ve never felt before. And
you seem to have become…addicted.
Sesshomaru was quiet.
As much as he hated to admit it, at least to himself, he had come
to…somewhat…enjoy that feeling that he had been experiencing since he had let
Rin back into his life.
But, he had always
enjoyed that feeling with Rin. The closeness he felt with her, it was something
different, something…safe. He had never felt anything safe like that before,
even when Rin had travelled with him as a child. But that may have been because
of the fact that at that time, he was mainly focused on hunting that coward
Naraku.
But it was a little
different when he was the girl. He felt an overwhelming need to keep her close,
but not like with Rin. With Rin, it was a feeling of lust and desire, as well a
feeling of…
But with Saiyuki, it
was different. He wanted to keep her close to keep her out of danger, keep her
from getting hurt. He found himself unable to cope with the thought of anything
happening to hi…Rin’s child.
Then he heard it. A
familiar voice, speaking words that he hadn’t heard for years.
Sesshomaru, do you have someone to protect…
His head snapped to attention
as the words his father spoke to him all those years ago rang throughout his
mind. He began to breathe heavily, but he didn’t know why. He just felt like
something had hit him with the force of a downhill boulder. Something that he
should’ve understood, but didn’t.
“I know who you are.”
The girl’s voice in
his ear startled him even more. He thought she had fallen back asleep. He
turned to face her. She had raised her head from his shoulder and was looking
at him with a look of understanding on her face.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean I know who
you are.”
Sesshomaru narrowed
his eyes. “I told you who I am. I’m a friend of your mother’s.”
Saiyuki snickered. “A
friend of my mommy’s who just happens to look like me?”
Sesshomaru raised his
eyebrows in surprise. “I see. So you figured out…”
“That you’re my
father. Mm-hmm.” She nodded.
Now it was
Sesshomaru’s turn to snicker. “How did you figure it out?”
“Well, like I said,
you look just like me. But really, it was because you look just like my mommy
said my father looks.”
Sesshomaru raised his
eyebrows. “And what did your mother say your father looked like?”
A thoughtful look crossed
her face as she pressed on of her fingers against her chin in deep thought.
“She said that my
father was really tall. That he had long white hair that flowed in the breeze,
like snow in a blizzard. She said that he had eyes that glowed like small suns
in the sunlight and the moonlight too. And, she said that he was really,
really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really,
really handsome.
For the first time in
a long time, Sesshomaru found himself stifling a laugh.
“But the one thing
that she told me about my father was that when you first laid eyes on him, you
would see that he was a great man who was very dangerous and commanded a great
deal of respect. But as you looked closer, you could also see that he was a man
who has seen a lot of pain and terror and destruction, and that his eyes bore a
look of eternal sadness that would never seem to fade.”
Sesshomaru listened
to that last part very closely. “And just how does a child like you know what
pain and terror looks like in somone’s eyes?”
She smiled. “Easy. You
have the same look as Inuyasha does when I ask him about what his childhood was
like.”
Sesshomaru looked at
her. His obvious distaste at being compared to Inuyasha aside, he felt…oddly
enough, he felt relieved. As though he had been waiting for the longest time
for someone to come to that same realization.
The girl was right.
He had seen a lot of things in his life. Many great atrocities, some of them
committed right in front of him, some of them committed by his very hands. He
had become so used to it that it became second nature to hide his true
feelings. Eventually, his true feelings no longer mattered, and he walked
through life, alone, originally in both body and mind, but soon, his solitude
was confined to just his mind, and in his thoughts.
But from what he was
hearing from Saiyuki, he had never really been alone. He’d always had someone
by his side who understood just who he was and how he felt.
It had never occurred
to him that a mere human would be able to see right through the disguise that
he had made. But here was this half-demon child, his half-demon child, telling him that the one human that he had
allowed into his life had somehow seen right through him.
But then again, she’s not just like any other human…there’s something,
something about her…some quality that compels you to protect her…
He shook his head. He
had been struggling with these new thoughts, ever since he saw Rin as a young
woman for the first time all those years ago. He thought maybe some time away
from her would help him get his thoughts together, or that maybe Rin would meet
some other human who could make her happy; hence the five-year separation.
But he could see now
that all he had done was strengthened her feelings for him even more by inadvertently
giving her a child. Her dedication to him was amazing, remarkable even. He couldn’t
understand why this human female was so fixated, so enamored with him, but it
had gotten to a point where he couldn’t ignore it anymore. He couldn’t ignore
her feelings. But most of all, he couldn’t ignore his own feelings.
He carried Saiyuki
back to the hut, and set her down by the front door. He slowly got dressed,
pretending not to notice Saiyuki as she watched him intensely.
Once he was fully
clothed and armored, he turned to walk out of the hut. He stopped by the door
and turned to look at his daughter.
“There’s something
that I need to take care of. I will return when I can. And Saiyuki?”
Her head snapped up
when she heard her name. “Yes, Father?”
He turned away,
looking ahead at the path in front of him. “Take care of your mother. Listen to
what she tells you, and keep her safe…for me. Okay?”
Saiyuki nodded. “Yes
sir.”
And with that,
Sesshomaru began to walk away.
Saiyuki watched him
until he had disappeared over the horizon. As she did, she couldn’t help but
notice that her father wasn’t his usual confident self. There was a sort of
urgency in his pace as he walked away, and she had heard just the slightest bit
of uncertainty in his words.
There was something
bothering him, she was sure of it.
* *
* * *
Saiyuki was silent as
she watched her mother staring towards the sky. The stars were brighter than
ever, and the moonlight seemed to bathe their home in an ocean of blue light.
The light seemed to reflect off of her mother’s eyes, making them shine along
with the moon in the sky.
But it was the look
in her mother’s eyes that she couldn’t help but stare at. It was forlorn, full
of sadness and longing for something.
Or someone.
Beneath the eyes were
lips that were curled into a small frown.
Saiyuki was worried.
Her mother had been this way ever since the last time her father left, since he
had left that small message to her, almost a month ago. She would just stand
there and look at the moon, night after night.
She’d even woken up
in the middle of the night to see her mother squirming on the floor, her hand
rubbing between her legs and her mouth muttering the words, “Lord Sesshomaru…”
Saiyuki pulled the
covers from her legs and began to walk to her mother. She pulled at her skirt,
which seemed to pull Rin out of her trance. Saiyuki could see the trails on the
side of her mother’s face where the tears had flowed with neverending ferocity.
“Mommy, are you
okay?”
Rin sniffled and
began to brush the tears from her eyes. Her eyes burned and itched, but she
smiled through the pain and said, “I’m fine, honey. Thank you for asking.” She
picked her up and began to carry her back to bed, softly humming a lullaby in
her ear as she did. She laid her back down on the warm sheets, still softly
humming her lullaby. It wasn’t long before Saiyuki had drifted back to sleep.
Rin sat by her side for a little longer, then, when she was sure she was
sleeping, she resumed her post at the door, silently staring at the stars.
As she looked at
them, she knew that somewhere, out in the vast, infinite world, her Lord
Sesshomaru was looking up at the same starry sky, probably thinking of her as
well. Even though that thought was supposed to bring her solace, it did nothing
but make her sadder.
* *
* * *
Sesshomaru slowly
walked down the path, his mind racing. Suddenly, he felt a deep sadness. He
felt his gaze drawn to the sky, where the moon and the stars were shining
brightly. Somehow, he knew…he didn’t know how he knew, he just knew…Rin was
looking at the same sky, hoping that someday, he’d come home.
He silently stared at
the moon. Someday, Rin. Someday.
As he stood there,
Jaken watched him silently, wondering what his lord was thinking. Suddenly,
Sesshomaru’s hand flew from his side, and his finger whip flew into the dark
forest in front of them. He jerked his hand,
and a demon flew out of the forest, clutching at the whip wrapped around
his neck.
“Please…Lor…Sess…o…maru….I…have…something…to…”
Sesshomaru released
the grip he had on the demon’s neck, and he immediately began to choke and
cough.
“You’ve been
following us for quite some time now. Who are you?”
The young tiger demon
gathered himself up, then bowed to Sesshomaru and said, “Forgive me, my lord.
My name is Gozu, and I bring you some urgent news.”
Sesshomaru frowned.
“What urgent news?”
