Hello everyone! Sorry about the wait. Hope you all enjoy the new chapter! By my count there are going to be two more chapters, and an epilog. Originally I thought it was going to be two chapters, but I had to split them up. Review responses can be found in the forum. Hope everyone enjoys!
His breath hissed through the narrow space of his teeth, and the sharp feeling that jolted through the stump of his arm momentarily blinded him.
“Sesshomaru?” Rin called out to him. The soft concern of her voice registered in his head, even as a second wave of pain lit fire to nerve endings that were dead. He gritted his teeth and growled at the feeling. “Fuck.” Inuyasha muttered, “What’s going on?” Sesshomaru bared his teeth but didn’t answer, because he didn’t know. He didn’t know, and it felt weird. The pain was a phantom making him feel parts that were no longer his. It made spots like snowflakes in his vision. The ghostly pain subsided slightly, and Sesshomaru concentrated on his surroundings. When he opened his eyes, his other senses opened too bringing knowledge into the fog of steady discomfort. The first thing he noticed was the scent of blood; distant and veiled, but definitely curling into the sensitive areas of his nose. “Am I bleeding?” Sesshomaru asked, and felt Inuyasha’s hands on his hand, pulling away from his lost arm. He loosened his muscles and allowed Inuyasha to examine him. “No. Smells like it though.” Inuyasha said with a bit of confusion strangling his voice. “What’s going on? I could feel that through the bond.” Sesshomaru merely shook his head without an answer, his mind fuzzily drawing in Inuyasha’s words. He could feel Sesshomaru’s pain through the bond? Pausing for a second Sesshomaru reflected that it was a good thing that Inuyasha could feel things through the bond. Their bond had only recently grown strong enough to allow any knowledge passing between the brothers. He opened his mouth to say something, but Sesshomaru caught the aroma of a different scent, of blood unlike his. Inuyasha whirled around a brief moment later, indicating that he too smelled it. “Damn. Something’s wrong.” He said before running towards the scent, foolishly throwing himself into danger. Sesshomaru ground his teeth together and didn’t bother calling out to his brother. “Impatient brat,” He whispered instead and stood up grabbing onto Tensaiga and placing the sword back to its place at his hip. The phantom pain was still there, but Sesshomaru was nothing if he couldn’t deal with a little pain. “Rin, you stay here.” Rin made an affirmative sound, wished him luck, and managed to make her voice sound steady and calm. Before he left Sesshomaru turned around and kissed her softly. She shook under his touch, and Sesshomaru wished he had time to smooth away her fears, but the scent of blood that wasn’t his own was getting stronger. Turning away he let his nose lead him swiftly to his destination. It was coming from the central courtyard, where he could see his brother already engaged, throwing himself as recklessly as always into his enemy. To the side of Inuyasha was a mound of sickeningly slimy body parts surrounding the panting figure of a silver nine tailed fox. Sesshomaru could see that Tamamo was injured, her fur streaked with blood, and her flesh torn. And true to the power of the nine tailed kitsune; she was keeping herself as safe as possible with a barrier made of holy light. The kitsune must have called upon the power of the goddess Inari for protection. He could hear the bustle of Inuyasha’s friends rushing towards the fight, as reckless as their alpha. They were unerringly brave. For a moment Sesshomaru simply watched, and didn’t like what he saw. The doppelganger of himself was grinning lively in a way that Sesshomaru was sure he was incapable of making his face appear. “Bastard!” Inuyasha screamed and bore down on his enemy again slashing the air before him with tetsusaiga. “Your detection skills are sloppy, Inuyasha. I expected you would have found me sooner.” The look alike said, and dodged the blow easily although he didn’t appear to be able to use Sesshomaru’s speed. His movements were slower, but no less deadly. Sesshomaru watched as the demon corrupting his image was attacked in multitude by the slayer and the monk. He dodged Miroku’s charms, but took the brunt of the attack from Sango’s weapon. The demon simply raised his left arm and used the bloodied limb to bat away the bone weapon. The simple action confirmed Sesshomaru’s suspicions, because the moment of impact brought the phantom pain back to the forefront of his mind. He grunted and willed himself to walk forward calmly as if nothing could touch him, as if he was a god. “Pathetic.” Sesshomaru said as if the whole affair was so taxingly below him that it was only by some twisted sense of humor that he even paid attention to it at all. Sesshomaru knew, because he was battle born, that driving an enemy down by making them believe that they are worthless was an advantage. The grinning double turned to him and laughed. “What is the point of even holding that form when you don’t know how to use it?” “Sesshomaru!” Inuyasha sounded worried. The sounds of crashing metal, sword against sword, overtook the sound of his brother’s concern. Inuyasha was thrown back again, this time because the double parried with a sword all too familiar to Sesshomaru. He was unsurprised to see Tokijin whole in that demon’s grasp. Sesshomaru pressed forward drawing his claws up and slashing at the double. He didn’t bother with using his poison, because he doubted it would do anything. He knew it was really Naraku under the blanket of his skin, and poison was not a weapon easily turned on him. His claws hit flesh, easily, and raked down the side of the impostors face bringing forward blood that stained his fingertips. But Sesshomaru wasn’t able to stay close to the enemy for long, because earthen tentacles that betrayed the flesh stealer’s true identity shot out around him piercing the fur he wore, and nicking his shoulder. Jumping backwards Sesshomaru landed a mere foot from Inuyasha’s side. It was a harder landing then he intended, but Sesshomaru focused onward feeling the swell of Inuyasha’s youki by his side. Then the whole world didn’t feel right. He felt Inuyasha grab onto his sleeve quickly and pull him out of the path of a tentacle that he could have avoided easily if he had seen it. He heard his brother growl, and release the diamond spears to blast away the creeping appendages that were shooting towards them. Then there was just the white light of pain ripping through his body from the smooth skin of his shortened arm. *Spiel Mit Mir* “You see, Inuyasha, whatever you do to me harms your dear brother. Do you really want to see him suffer so?” The fucking bastard was laughing at them, holding forward the arm that gave him such power. Inuyasha wanted to rip the bastard to shreds, but knew that this was going to be harder than just hacking and slashing. Naraku, using Sesshomaru’s face, was holding forward his pilfered left arm showing off the crystals of Inuyasha’s attack that drove into the skin and stuck like icicles to the eves of a house. Inuyasha was halting instinctively at the scent of Sesshomaru’s blood, at the sight of Sesshomaru brought to his knees in agony. He wasn’t sure if his brother was conscious after he pulled him from the path of a tentacle aimed to skewer him through his head. Sesshomaru hadn’t moved from the crumpled spot against Inuyasha’s chest. Inuyasha dug the tip of tetsusaiga into the ground in front of him in a half aggressive attempt at shielding himself and his brother. He froze again hearing his brother whimper. “I will have your brother’s body, Inuyasha. And I will take and take all the power for my own.” Naraku gloated. Out of the corner of his eye Inuyasha saw that the mass of tentacles had wrapped completely around the powerful kitsune who had so kindly brought them into her home. “Get your hands off of her!” He could hear Kagome yell, and then saw the brightness of her purification arrow turning the tentacles to dust all around them. The woman he loved pulled another arrow from her quiver and this time aimed it at their bloody grotesque enemy. “Kagome! Stop!” Inuyasha called out immediately seeing her miscalculation. His cry jolted the girl, and the arrow missed its mark entirely zooming to the wall of the courtyard and missing flesh. But the wall was a good distraction, because as it turned out the great home of Tamamo the fox maiden was reinforced with youki. The moment Kagome’s arrow hit the wall of the courtyard, the whole thing exploded outward dust and splinters obstructing views and allowing movement. Inuyasha felt Kagome, shortly followed by Miroku, crash into his side, and topple over as he lifted Sesshomaru from under his arms and pulled him backwards. “Oh!” Kagome cried out. The sound of her falling was slight behind him. “Kagome, don’t use your arrows. Naraku’s using Sesshomaru’s arm as a shield. You could purify Sesshomaru, by accident.” Miroku was saying as the familiar sound of Kagome pulling back the bow string reached Inuyasha’s twitching ears. Her arrow clattered to the ground, and the dust cleared. Inuyasha, Sesshomaru, Kagome, and Miroku had made it to the covered porch of the main room in the blast. And from across the courtyard Inuyasha could see that Sango, Shippo, and Tamamo had moved in one bloody trail across a little streambed and behind a wall of decorative bamboo. He could barely hear Shippo talking to the older kitsune, but he was sure that the kit was trying to be reassuring. “Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru growled out beside him affirming his consciousness, at least for the moment. “We need to retake my arm.” “It’s not going to be easy.” Miroku said behind them. “Naraku will probably do anything to keep it, especially if he thinks he can use you as leverage against Inuyasha.” Inuyasha found it painfully ironic that if this situation had occurred a year ago he wouldn’t have cared particularly much. In fact he would have said it served Sesshomaru right. Things were different now. He loved Sesshomaru. And with love came the need and want to protect. Sesshomaru pushed off onto his feet, and Inuyasha watched as his brother made his face battle worthy. “I will do it. Everyone needs to attack him from different angles, make it so that he cannot block effectively.” Sesshomaru ordered and then turned to Kagome who had sat up gripping her weapon that was useless in this battle. “Kagome, use your arrows to keep him pinned down.” Kagome nodded and tucked her dark hair behind her ears, looking like she was grateful to be given a purpose. “I can do that.” She said. Inuyasha nodded and sped off as their little group spread out to start the assault. Miroku started from Inuyasha’s left, throwing sutras then rushing their opponent. Inuyasha rushed him too, opting for closer combat in hopes that he could control where his strikes landed rather than let Naraku block out his bigger attacks. His blood rushed with him; wild, fierce in his body. Kagome was shooting arrows into the ground from his right blocking Naraku’s escape. The bright show of her spiritual powers was amazing to behold. Sesshomaru came in from behind her, so fast that he appeared at the target in a blur. Gritting his teeth Inuyasha strained his muscles to catch up with his brother and take this bastard down. But Naraku was the master of a body that was the multitude of many, and attacking him was always like attacking a hoard of youkai. He saw it this time, the bubbling and splitting of the skin on the evil hanyou’s back. Inuyasha was irritated when tentacles predictably shot forward to him, trying to keep him away from his target. His legs moved to their own beat, his body twisting gracefully as Naraku's sinuous tentacles rocketed into his skin. Sweet red blood dripped in rivulets down Inuyasha's face as they scratched his face. He could feel the salty substance coating his chest, and arms throbbed slightly with a dull pain. Leaping forward Inuyasha willfully ignored all that was trying to stop him; Naraku's tentacles, his own wounds… He pushed forward against that all until he was mere inches from his opponent. "You are both fools." Naraku spat an insult as he blocked Sesshomaru’s quick attacks with Tokijin, and allowed his tentacles to skewer Inuyasha. The borrowed face was splattered with Inuyasha's crimson blood. His lips twisted into a smirk as if he had the upper hand. "Nothing you do to me will matter. I am infinite." Naraku stated haughtily when Sesshomaru shoved his claws straight through his stomach and came out the other side. "We will see about that." Sesshomaru said between clenched teeth, while Inuyasha cursed. Suddenly Inuyasha lost his balance and was thrown backwards free from the seeking piercing appendages that were rummaging around under his skin. He was air born for a moment before landing with a crash against the support beam on the building behind him. “Fuck!” Inuyasha spat and forced himself to his feet again, determined to push forward and stop the bastard. Even better, he was going to stop this bastard with Sesshomaru. They would be victorious together. He got in two good strides before being forced backwards again. This time his stomach came up into his mouth as Miroku careened into him like a wayward bird. He broke the fall for his friend, and lost his breath when he slammed into the ground. “Sorry.” Miroku mumbled, and sounded worse for the wear. He must have been slapped aside by one of Naraku’s slimy appendages, because he gripped his ribs as if they were broken. His breath came out in wheezes. Inuyasha grunted and jumped out from under his injured friend, adrenaline jolting him into action. He got in three good strides on his second attempt to reach the battle. His eyes were glued in anxious anticipation to the scene of Sesshomaru attacking his bloodied doppelganger, snarling and red eyed as if he was going to transform and just bite the damned arm off. Naraku was laughing at the battle, dodging, getting hit, and acting as if it was nothing even when his face betrayed pain. The third stride almost brought Inuyasha’s racing, gooseflesh covered body to the thicket of the battle. The thick feeling of battle and blood drowned out warnings in his brain. Inuyasha lifted tetsusaiga over his head to slice the bastard’s head in half like an overripe melon. But the action was never carried out because at that moment the world was engulfed in the light of purification, and the sound of Kagome screaming. *Spiel Mit Mir* She saw it coming, but there was nothing she could do to stop it. Kagome felt the air leave her lungs in one great expulsive shriek. The fear overwhelmed her as she watched the deadly light of purification race towards the three entangled demons. The effect was as bright as seeing a firework go off up close. Her eyes couldn’t adjust to the changes in light so fast. Her pulse hammered out of control. Kagome knew she was going to puke in anxiety. Blindly she stumbled forward, not quite catching her breath, and still managed to cry out. “Inuyasha! Sesshomaru!” The aftermath of the purification blast was dark. Kagome stumbled forward, and almost tripped on Inuyasha who had been pushed back face first into the ground. He was moving slowly, so she knew he was alive. Dropping to her knees she tried to help him up. “Fuck! That shit burns!” Inuyasha grumbled and then lifted his head. “Damn. Where the fuck is Sesshomaru?” Kagome shook her head because she didn’t know. She wasn’t sure. She couldn’t see very well yet. “I’m sorry.” Kagome stumbled over her words. “I tried to warn you…” “His nose works fine,” Sesshomaru spoke from somewhere to their right calming the fear that he was purified in the blast. “The scent of a purification arrow is distinctive.” He didn’t sound too happy, and Kagome gulped trying hard to swallow down the bile that threatened to pass through her throat and spill out of her into the world. “I didn’t shoot it.” She squelched out instead. “I did.” A voice that was cold and calculating spoke out through the darkness. Kagome squinted and found her eyes adjusting to the world around them. And there before them was Kikyo. Kagome could see the red of her hakama first, and then the rest of the undead priestess began to take shape out of the blurry world around her. “Kikyo…” Inuyasha said her name in the same lost way he always addressed her, and then he took a breath in, “Did you get him?” Kikyo looked away, and Kagome followed her impassionate gaze to the spot where Naraku had been fighting the brothers. The ground was scorched as if it had been set ablaze, but there was no body. “I have already told you once,” She said distantly and patiently, “Destroying Naraku’s body will do nothing. He is more like a spirit than a youkai. As long as the jewel exists so shall he.” Kagome felt a little defeated at the words. “So he got away.” Inuyasha huffed and stood up off the ground, even though he was bleeding. “I’ll just have to sniff him out. His stench returned when you shot your arrow at him.” “She did hit him.” Sesshomaru offered. “I threw him in front of me to shield myself from the blast.” He said it as if it was nothing to have been in the path of purification. Kagome felt her stomach flip flop again. “Why was he taking another appearance?” Kikyo asked, although the tone of her voice sounded more like a demand than an inquiry. And then the sharp sound of her voice filled the air again. “Why is he taking your appearance, youkai?” The question was directed at Sesshomaru, and it occurred to Kagome that Sesshomaru and Kikyo might not know each other, or only know each other in passing. She certainly didn’t seem to know his name. Kagome wondered what Kikyo would think of the brothers’ relationship. “Naraku is trying to use me as a shield against Inuyasha, because my brother would not hurt me.” Sesshomaru replied. Kagome glanced towards Sesshomaru and noticed that he had stepped in closer to Inuyasha. That was the basic concept, Kagome agreed, except it left a lot out. It left a lot out that Kikyo probably had the right to know. The words bumbled up to the tip of Kagome’s tongue and stayed there because she couldn’t blurt them out. “I see.” Kikyo said apparently willing to accept the answer at face value. She slung her bow over her shoulder then as if she was just going to travel off as suddenly as she came. “Wait, Kikyo.” Kagome found herself blurting out. “How did you know to come here?” Kikyo paused. “You showed me the path. Kitsune magic, especially when granted by gods is harder for a priestess to see. When your arrow pierced the wall I was able to see my goal. I knew Naraku was nearby because of the jewel.” She explained, and Kagome heard gentleness in her voice that hadn’t been there until recently. It was a gentle sound of peace. “Oh.” “Lady Kikyo,” Miroku called out still wheezing even though he was standing and leaning heavily on his staff, “I implore you. Please stay with us for a bit. Naraku counts on us all being separated to keep the upper hand in all of this, and we will have to fight his body to get to his soul.” Kagome cringed at her friend’s words. Even though they were true, traveling with Kikyo was a prospect that she wasn’t looking forward to at all. But she looked over to the rest of the group that was slowly making their way back to them and understood why Miroku said those things. Sango and Kohaku were holding up the injured kitsune lady, helping her walk back to the main group in slow strides because she was still bleeding heavily. The boy would be no stranger to switching traveling parties. He had traveled with Kikyo, and with Sesshomaru, alone, and in dangerous company. But all along he was separated from his sister, and Kagome knew that Sango worried about him. She had seen Sango shed tears for him, and look to the sky as if she was asking the heavens to watch over her brother for just one more night. Hope that the siblings might have time together made all of Kagome’s anxieties about other things seem petty. “Miroku’s right.” Kagome blurted out, “Please stay with us Kikyo. We need to work together to end this quickly.” “Uh…” Inuyasha intoned nervously, but Kagome ignored him and Kikyo didn’t seem to notice. Kikyo closed her eyes and smiled. “Very well,” she agreed, “Let me help with the injured.”
