Kaede had made a broth out of the various herbs that she gathered and Kagome, with the help of Saburo, had forced Kouga to drink it down. There had been a vast improvement in his condition, but he hadn’t regained consciousness. He hadn’t had another seizure and his fever broke in the early morning hours. He had regained some of his normal coloring, but his skin was still lacking that sun kissed hue. Everyone had breathed a heavy sigh of relief in the morning when Kaede had informed them that he was recovering nicely and would only need rest until he regained his strength. Kaede had taken Shippo with her to perform her daily chores, leaving the pack brothers and Kagome alone to tend to Kouga.
“Kagome, we need to speak with you about Kouga.” Saburo said in a serious voice that commanded her attention. “Sure, Saburo. Is this about how he got poisoned? Ginta said that Kouga had been taking out the snake demons on your lands.” She replied as she filled several bowls with their morning meal. Saburo accepted his with a small smile and took several bites before he answered, trying to gather his thoughts. He was unsure how to break the news to Kagome that Kouga was forbidden to have contact with her. He didn’t even want to think about what would happen if the Council was to find out about this, but if they did he would take the blame and the punishment. His concern was his little sister at the moment. She had not been herself. It was not so much in her obvious distress over Kouga’s ailment. It was more in the way she carried herself, her shoulders slumped slightly lower than he remembered, or the way her soft brown eyes lacked that tiny sparkle he had become accustomed to. It was proof enough that the Elders’ decision had affected her more than he thought possible. It warmed his heart that she valued her place in their wolf pack so much, but at the same time he knew it may have something more to do with Kouga than anything else. That was his predicament. That was what bothered him the most. He hated being the bearer of bad news. “Yes and no. Kagome there are some things that I must tell you, but I fear that I cannot be tactful about this. The words escape me, so forgive my bluntness. After you left the hearing, the Elders handed down an edict that Kouga was not to have contact with you again.” Saburo waited with bated breath for her to reply. She had stopped mid bite, replacing her chopsticks in the bowl as her head lowered, hiding her face behind her chin length bangs. Ginta and Hakkaku stopped shoveling their food in their mouths and watched the scene before them. They expected her to cry, maybe get angry, and possibly shout. Her shoulders began to shake with what they assumed was sobbing, but instead she just laughed. They were bewildered. It was a humorless chuckle, but a chuckle none the less. “Figures. So what are you going to do? Take him back and hope the Elders don’t find out?” She asked darkly, her eyes, when she finally met his, were filled with pain. “There’s more I should tell you before I answer. Kouga did not take the Elders decision well. When Ginta told you he was eradicating the snakes on our lands, he spoke the truth, but a tame version. Sister, Kouga has not been well. He has been pushing himself to the limit when attacking the snakes and will not listen to reason. It is almost as if he has been mourning the loss of you, punishing himself physically to keep the emotional pain at bay. It is no surprise that he was injured, but, to be honest, we expected something far more gruesome. I feel that it may be in his best interest to leave him in your care while we return to the pack.” Saburo explained. “I don’t think Kouga would like that. He’s Alpha and we both know how important the pack is to him. If he believes that the snake demons’ threat is great enough to risk his self in such a way, then I doubt he will be happy to be left behind and won’t the Elders be upset when they find out? Kouga could get into serious trouble.” She replied in her usual selfless way. “You don’t understand, sis. Kouga has been doing dumb, irresponsible shit. Yeah, the snakes are a threat, one we’ve had for a couple years now, but he’s going out every day hunting them. He won’t take anyone with him, refuses all offers of help and comes home bloody and tore up from the fights. He doesn’t give himself a break, just keeps at it.” Hakkaku supplied almost desperately. “Look, little sister, we’re worried. He’s putting himself in needless danger and he won’t talk to any of us anymore. We’ve never seen him like this and me and Hakkaku were around when his father was killed. Others are starting to notice his behavior and if something isn’t done soon Kouga may not be the Alpha of our pack for very much longer.” Ginta chimed in. “He may or may not be happy about this, but it is far more important that he has a chance to possibly regain his senses. He loves you, little one, and his loosing you has been more than he can bear. Whether he is with you or not is, in my opinion, very important. He could very well lose his life if he continues on as he is now. I will handle the Council and any others who question Kouga’s whereabouts. All I need you to do is keep him here until we come for him.” Saburo said taking her hands and giving them a light squeeze for comfort. She was silent for a time, processing everything that she was told. Part of Kagome was up and dancing at the thought that she would get to spend time with the one she just realized she loved, but another part was conflicted. Kouga was incredibly headstrong and fiercely loyal to his kin. She couldn’t believe that he would sit idly in Edo, even if he was with her, while his pack was in danger, but she couldn’t let him continue hurting himself. It made sense what Saburo had asked of her, but she doubted that she could effectively keep Kouga away. The Council was another issue. Kagome believed Saburo heart and soul, but she knew that there were some things in this world you simply cannot control. It would be fairly easy for Kouga’s presence in the village to reach the ears of the ookami Elders and she would never forgive herself if anything happened to Kouga because of her. She knew he would stand and take the punishment honorably and without question. That was just who he was, a Prince through and through. What to do? “What will happen if the Elders find out Kouga’s with me?” She asked, concern lacing her voice. She watched Saburo cringe, then look nervously at Ginta and Hakkaku, before glancing at Kouga and finally her. That didn’t seem promising. “They believe you to be a threat to us and our way of life. It’s not in a violent way they fear you, but in the way, they believe, trouble follows you. I do not agree with their logic and neither do the ones who stood behind you at the hearing, but the rest of the pack does. Kouga would be forced to step down from his position or worse. It is not something that I want, but I also don’t want to watch my brother silently kill himself day in and day out. It is a risk I fear we must take. Please, Kagome, I implore you, take him in, try to heal him the best you can. We need him whole and I know you are the only one he will listen to at this point. I will tell the Elders that Kouga has found a lead on the snake demons’ main nest and is following it to explain his absence. Please, Sister, say you will do this.” Saburo pleaded. “Okay, I’ll do it, but don’t be upset if I can’t hold him back from returning before you guys come and get him.” She said with a hint of amused seriousness. “Don’t worry about Kouga. I don’t think he will be willing to leave your side as quickly as you believe, little one. Now, with that settled we must return. Thank you for your hospitality and for agreeing to do this.” Kagome watched Saburo stand and bow, Ginta and Hakkaku following their Beta’s lead. “Wait a minute. Don’t you want to wait until Kouga’s awake so you can explain this to him? Kaede said that he could wake anytime and I think it would sound better coming from one of you.” She said frantically. “I doubt that, sis. Just tell him what we said and that we think it’s for the best right now.” Hakkaku said with a small smile. “Yeah and if he fights you on it, just tell him that you were the one who saved his life and he’ll be indebted to you. That way he has to listen.” Ginta suggested. “It would be an effective way to keep him out of sight, but I’m afraid we cannot dally any longer. We have to get back before suspicions arise.” Saburo said with another bow before he exited the hut followed by Hakkaku and Ginta. Kagome shot to her feet and ran after them. She caught Saburo by his arm like the younger sister she was. “When are you going to be back?” She asked “It will have to be within a month. I do not think I will be able to cover for him much longer than that without raising unneeded questions. Take care little sister and give Kouga our best when he wakes.” Saburo ruffled her hair with a wink and then sped off to the east with Ginta and Hakkaku struggling to catch up. Kagome looked back at Kouga laying peacefully on her futon, his breathing soft and even, a pleasant contrast from his labored wheezing the night before. He stirred and rolled onto his side, his long, tangled onyx hair sliding over his shoulder and down his back to rest on the mat below him leaving her with a view of the scars littering his skin. She remembered a few, but there were so many extra. What had he done to himself? It was unusual enough for a full blooded demon to scar, but to retain as many as Kouga had unsettled her. He must have been wounded to the bone many times to be marred in such a way. Tears prickled her eyes at the thought of Kouga being in any kind of pain. She thought of the fear that had seized her last night at the sight of Kouga, his normal unwavering strength reduced to a feverish, convulsing weakness. Kouga was not weak, never had he been so. Not when Kagura had killed his comrades and the faux jewel shard filled with miasma poisoned him, not when Renkotsu and Ginkotsu attempted to remove the jewel shards from his legs leaving him severely injured. He had found it in himself to walk away after she purified the fake shard in his arm and he still managed to protect her and assist InuYasha in taking down Renkotsu. Seeing him last night had shaken her to the core and she vowed that she would rather die a thousand agonizing, painful deaths then to ever see him in such a state again. Even if she couldn’t be with him, she was going to protect him, the same way he had done for her countless times, whether he agreed to it or not. She nodded her head once in acknowledgement of her final determined decision and went about her normal chores for the morning, cleaning the breakfast dishes and making her way to the river to gather water to wash them. Kouga couldn’t remember ever feeling so terrible. Every nerve ending in his body felt like it was on fire. He groaned and rolled onto his back, raising a trembling clawed hand to swipe across his face. He inhaled deeply and held it. He felt his chest constrict horribly. ‘Kagome.’ Was it not bad enough that he could never see her again? Did the Gods insist on tormenting him with her tantalizing scent? He had thought he’d gotten rid of it. He cracked his eyes open and froze. He wasn’t in his den. He remembered lying on the stone floor after wiping out a nest and falling asleep. Where was he? How did he get here? “Hey, ya puny wolf, when you gonna go back? You’re stinkin’ up my home.” Kouga turned his head to see InuYasha leaning against the door frame of the hut. His home? That meant he was in Edo with Kagome. It couldn’t be. What happened? How? He hefted himself into a sitting position, every fiber of his body screaming in protest. “How did I get here?” Kouga asked confused. “What ya don’t remember? You were poisoned, ya wimp and your meat head buddies brought you here so Kagome could cure you. Now that you’re up, it’s time for you to go.” InuYasha bit out, walking to his hammock and jumping in. “I didn’t even get to sleep here last night. You sure screw up a lot of shit, ya know. I always knew you were a baka.” “You know what they say about opinions, mutt?” Kouga asked while grabbing his furs and wrapping them around his waist under the blanket covering him. “Everyone gets one.” InuYasha answered confidently. “That and opinions are like assholes, some are just bigger than others.” Kouga chuckled darkly. Kouga didn’t want to leave his beloved, but he didn’t have a choice. He had responsibilities and obligations that trumped his own personal wants or, in this case, all-consuming needs. He needed to feel Kagome, to see her, to bury his face in the soft skin of her neck and inhale that intoxicating, pure scent that caused him so much joy and pain, but if he did, he may not ever return to his people. The temptation was too great, so he did the next best thing to allow him a means of escape. He antagonized the dog. He figured InuYasha would start a fight and that would give him the best excuse to leave without having to explain anything to Kagome. It worked perfectly. The mutt jumped down from his hanging bed and closed the gap between them in a heartbeat. Kouga was on his feet instantly. “Where do you get off, fucker? Do you have any idea what kinda shit you and your fuckin’ mongrels put her through? It was Gods be damned hell! Then you come here all sick and shit just when Kagome was getting better. Get the fuck outta here before she gets back or I’ll jam my sword through your gut!” InuYasha yelled into his face. Kouga clenched his fists and clamped his jaw, breathing heavily trying to calm himself down. He wanted to rearrange the stupid mutt’s ugly face for talking to him like that, but he heard the truth in his words. Kouga knew Kagome was suffering the moment the decision was made that she had to leave the ookami lands. He had held her while she broke down, but he figured she’d be alright. She wasn’t in love with him like he was with her. To her he was a cherished friend and she always hated losing friends, but he thought she would overcome and bounce back like always. He didn’t really know what had happened to her after she left and was tempted to ask, but thought better of it. This was his opportunity to leave before he caused any more harm. Kouga willed his legs to move out the door, his frame rigid in barely contained anger. Kouga made it past the old Miko’s herb garden, which was blessedly empty and walked toward the river. His head was bowed and he was lost in thought. He didn’t see her, didn’t sense her, or even catch her scent. He felt someone slam into his chest and stopped when the tiny person bounced off of him and fell with an ‘oomph’ to the ground. He raised his head and saw Kagome at his feet, covered in water from the spilled bucket she carried. He wanted to reach down and gather her to him, to run his hands along her body to verify that their time together wasn’t just a wild hallucination, but he didn’t. He didn’t move to help her up when she began to stand out of fear of what that one innocent touch would cause. Just at the sight of her he was already tempted to just say to hell with it all and forget who he was and what he represented, just to stay with her forever. He watched silently as she brushed the wet mud from her clothes and he felt himself twitch under his furs. The white cloth of her Miko robes were soaked through, exposing the skin underneath and she was sending waves of desire crashing through him every time her delicate hand passed across her lush breasts. He could see her nipples pebble under the wet fabric. Then they moved down to her silky cloth covered thighs and around to her firm, sweet little ass. He had to stop, to look away, to will his frozen legs to move, but he couldn’t. His brain was turning into a steaming pile of mush, preventing any logical and coherent thoughts from forming. It was lightning fast, no thought involved, just emotion, and scorching need. His hands wrapped around her slender upper arms and he pulled her hard against him, crashing his lips onto hers in a bruising kiss. She stumbled and screeched in surprise, his mouth muffling the noise. He ignored it, she was responding to his forceful actions, fisting her hands in the hair that hung over his chest, moving those plump lips along with his. She was cool silk to his burning steel and he ground himself into her hard. She gasped in embarrassment and tried to pull away, but he twisted his claws into her hair and wrapped an arm around her waist holding her in place as he plundered her open mouth like a starved demon. He felt her melt into him and begin to return his rough attentions with timid strokes of her own. He growled audibly at the feeling. She shivered in his embrace and pulled his hair harder as her fists clenched against his chest. He gave into to the feral urge to nip at her swollen bottom lip, drawing the smallest amount of blood. He suckled the abused flesh, relishing in the taste of her life blood swirling in his mouth. She surrounded him, permeated his very existence and he felt nothing, but unadulterated joy. There was no pain, no pack, no spectators, nothing, just her; just her taste flowing like cool water over his parched tongue, her scent enveloping him, weaving him into its sweet cocoon, her tiny body pressed so deliciously to his. She was close, so close and then she was gone. His sluggish mind roared in protest. ‘How dare this be another phantom?!’ He felt a sharp pain in his chest just before a searing hot pain exploded behind his eyes and along his spine. He felt the skin on his back tear as he slid down the grating trunk of a not so far away tree. He landed on his feet and stared at the mutt who had Tetsusaiga drawn. Kagome was screaming something at him and pulling on his red haori, but Kouga couldn’t hear her. The only thing that registered was the thundering of his heart in his ears and the need to punish the one who separated him from his mate. Kagome couldn’t believe what was happening, one minute Kouga was dominating her and the next she was falling face first into a sea of red. She righted herself just in time to see Kouga go flying into a tree. “Why the hell did you just do that?!” She screamed, not one to cuss, but felt like this was the perfect time to make an exception. InuYasha didn’t answer her. He unsheathed Tetsusaiga and pushed her behind him when Kouga’s feet made contact with the ground. She heard Kouga snarl and InuYasha returned it with a growl, a primal challenge. She jumped from behind him and pulled on his billowing sleeves. “InuYasha! What are you doing? Stop this! Stop!” She yelled, but was shoved to the ground a few feet away in response. Kouga roared savagely and leapt into the air, his claws pulled back ready to attack. InuYasha swung his sword back, but before it could descend Kouga was upon him, slashing him across the face. He gave InuYasha no time to recover. He landed a strong foot into the gut of the hanyou and continued to rain down blow after blow wherever his fists found purchase. InuYasha leapt backwards bringing his own claws to the dripping blood on his face. “Blades of Blood!” InuYasha yelled as the crimson blades hurled toward Kouga. Kouga was sliced several times giving InuYasha the chance he needed. He raised Tetsusaiga. “Wind Scar!” As soon as the words left her friend’s mouth, a blinding wave ripped through the earth, barreling directly toward Kouga. She felt her heart sputter and stop as the seismic wave decimated everything in its path, ripping through the foliage where the ookami Prince stood. Kouga had sensed the attack and had retreated to safety just in time. Kagome ran toward InuYasha trying to stop the madness. Kouga was lunging again, fangs bared viciously. InuYasha shoved her behind him again and raised Tetsusaiga. This had to stop before they actually killed one another. “SIT!” She screeched. She opened her eyes to see a flying Kouga coming straight for her, InuYasha now planted in the dirt at her feet. She felt a wave of fear freeze her muscles at the look of rage that twisted Kouga’s handsome features and the bloody claws he brandished poised for attack. She closed her eyes in the only preparation she could muster, but instead of the pain of razor sharp demon claws tearing through her flesh, she felt strong, bare arms encircle her and lift her off the ground. She opened her eyes to see Kouga’s chest as he twisted his body and landed on his back with her wrapped safely in his limbs. They skidded across the ground from the momentum of his sprint. She laid on him for a moment when they finally came to a halt, enjoying the feeling of being in his embrace again. Then she extracted herself from his grip and stood crossing her arms like an impatient, upset mother and waited until they both regained their footing. “What is wrong with you two? Do you realize someone could have been hurt? Not just your oh-so-indestructible selves, but an innocent! I can’t believe you two!” She yelled. InuYasha sheathed Tetsusaiga with his ears plastered to his head and Kouga flinched as his shoulders slumped. “I would think you two had gotten over this phase by now, but noooo! What the…the… hell?! BAKA, BAKA, BAKA,BAKA!” She screamed, shaking her finger at each of them in turn. They shrunk further into themselves and fought the urge to cover their sensitive ears when her voice reached a shrill pitch. Gods she was livid. Shippo came bounding up and leapt onto Kagome’s shoulder. “Are you okay, Mama? I saw what happened. I thought he was going to…Kouga was…and you were…” Shippo began to sniffle trying to choke back his tears. She cradled him in her arms and buried her face in his hair, as she rubbed his back soothingly. “Shhh, Shippo. I’m fine, see? Everything’s fine now.” She cooed. “Feh, if you would have never said that damn word, you wouldn’t have been in danger!” InuYasha yelled, his ignorant bravado restored in its entire splendor. “InuYasha.” Kagome said in her sweetest voice. InuYasha’s blood ran cold and his lip curled at her tone. “Don’t you fu…” He began. “SIT!” Kagome cut him off, sending him crashing to the earth. “Uuuuck!” he groaned the remainder of his sentence into the dirt. “Kagome, you know I would never hurt you, right? I was just moving so fast and then mutt-face was just gone all of a sudden.” Kouga said trying to explain. “Like I said, Kouga, I’m fine, but I want to know what’s going on. Why were you two fighting?” She said sternly, her arms wrapped around a peeved Shippo. “I’ll tell ya why. I told the idiot wolf to leave. Then I find him out here sucking your face off and I smelled your blood. I think he’s hurt you enough, Kagome. He doesn’t belong here.” InuYasha answered, brushing the dirt off his fire rat ensemble. “You don’t get to dictate my life, InuYasha!” She yelled incensed. “He’s right, Kagome. I am grateful for everything you’ve done and maybe one day I’ll be able to repay it, but I have to go back to the pack. I’m sorry for everything. I never meant to hurt you.” Kouga said sadly. Before Kagome could speak, Kouga was gone, a dust trail the only proof that he had been there at all. Kagome cursed under her breath, then shook her head at the vulgarities that seemed to spew from her today. Her mother would be so ashamed. Kagome stormed up to InuYasha, causing him to take several steps back and wacked him on his shoulder. “You see what you’ve done now? He can’t go back yet. Bend down and let me on. You’re taking me to go get him and you better hurry, InuYasha, or else.” She said shaking her finger in his face. InuYasha gulped and knelt so she could climb onto his back. When he stood holding Kagome’s legs, Shippo jumped to the ground. “Don’t worry, Mama. I’ll handle the village until you get back.” Shippo said with a salute. Kagome giggled at her son. Shippo turned around and started shooing the gathered crowd away. “Get a move on people. Nothing to see here. What? You ain’t never seen a fight before?” He was saying as he waved them off. InuYasha bounded off in pursuit of Kouga’s cyclone. Kagome hoped that they would reach him before he got too far ahead. She had a lot of explaining and coercing to do.A/N: A thousand humble apologies for not updating sooner! There's been a lot going on on the home front.
Once again I'd like to thank those awesome people who took the time to crtique my story. Luminari_Lilium, puppydog, nique217, Tassana_Burrfoot, & Nicole There seems to be a little confustion as to why Sesshomaru hasn't ripped Hiroshi into little pieces. Allow me to explain. Sesshomaru knows he was tricked. He also knows that Hiroshi didn't work alone. I touched on the fact that he had to keep appearances up for political purposes in Chapter 10. Sesshomaru strikes me as a patient demon, one who would wait to strike when he had all available information. If he went in there slashing away without proof (he disintergrated the letter in a fit of rage in Chapter 10), he could have possibly started a war. I say war because the ookamis would have attacked him for killing their pack brother and Sess would have to kill them all, making for a very short story. This issue will be resolved soon. I promise. Thank you to all my readers and those who voted. Hope you enjoyed this chapter and I will be posting again soon. ~scattered-dimensions~While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
