Having been roused early by a raucous hail, Kagome stood alone in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. Her every waking moment had been a battle as she forced herself to focus on a list of potential errands—anything, anything but the night before.
The bank for one.
There was a good chance that Naraku had transferred money and most of it had to be sent to her mom. She needed to get some food and maybe the fabric store, too, for Inuyasha. The shorts he had been using as underwear and pajamas were wearing thin (not that she minded much), and although fall had just ended, this was shaping up to be Tokyo’s coldest winter on record. He could use some flannel pants and maybe a nice button up thermal to get him through. For some reason, after last night, Naraku’s castoffs no longer seemed an option.
But you’re ok with using Naraku’s money on Inuyasha? Her traitorous mind sassed back. Kagome shook the thought away, peeling an apple to add to the porridge.
The streets were quiet; the usual bustle around her house was absent, but maybe it was because she was up earlier than usual despite the night’s exhausting events. Humming, Kagome washed her hands and reached for the bowls in the cabinet when a knock on the door startled her.
Her stomach tightened. There was absolutely no reason anyone should be knocking this early in the morning. She very rarely had such an early morning walk in, nor did she have any orders at all.
She stepped through the hallway and hesitated at the front door, anticipating the brigade of soldiers ready to cart her and Inuyasha off to the Purification Center downtown. Wiping her sweaty palm on her robe, she swallowed and forced herself to speak. “Who is it?”
A solitary voice responded.
“Mam, I must speak with a—” he paused, “Miss Kagome Higurashi.”
Fear gripped her as she opened the door, partially shielding herself behind it. Standing on the porch, his back to the wind, was a young man, eighteen at most.
She forced a polite smile. “May I first ask what this is about?” Her eyes flew automatically to his hand, where instead of a gun or bow he held a thick stack of papers. “I’d let you in, but I’ve just woken up and I’m not dressed.” She thrust her chin downwards, pointing to her robe. The young man hastened to apologize.
He gave a cursory bow. “I know it’s early, but I’ve been ordered to hand these out in your area. Here.” He handed her a legal sized sheet of heavy paper, which she took without reading. The press must have been recent; she could smell the ink. “There was some trouble in this neighborhood last night. You didn’t hear anything?”
Kagome shook her head. “I’m sorry; I go to bed very early.”
Backing up, the soldier took the last step on her porch leading to the sidewalk. “Be careful, mam. If you see or hear anything, I’m ‘sposed to tell you to call the number on the flyer. Have a nice day.”
Closing the door, Kagome walked back to the kitchen. She rolled the paper and slipped it into the loose left pocket of her robe. In the right was her scarf.

“Well, read it,” Inuyasha prompted, slurping his porridge. He sat on the floor of the bedroom near her bed while Kagome, legs modestly crossed, leaned back against the wall facing him. The furled paper lay between them along with their breakfast tray. “We’re obviously safe if they’re just handin’ out flyers door to door.”
Kagome leaned over with one hand and popped her spoon into her mouth in order to snatch up the notice. She unrolled it and tossed the utensil into a nearly empty bowl. “The government is offering a cash reward for the boy, dead or alive, as well as for any information leading to the capture of other hanyou in the area.” Her large eyes flicked to him and back towards the flyer before she continued to read, her voice faltering. “It also warns anyone who is hiding a hanyou or unregistered demon to turn the fugitive over under penalty of immediate execution.”
She again looked to him for a reaction and met his hardened stare.
“What?”
“Don’t what me, Kagome. I’ll call Sessh and arrange something. Anything.”
Her face mottled with anger. “You think I would turn you in?”
“No! Of course not,” he hastened to assure her before explaining. “I mean, we’ve both been pretty cavalier about this till now. Me being here could end up killing us both. I couldn’t live with myself if you died because of me.” Inuyasha set his bowl on the tray and tried—slowly—to get to his feet. “What if tomorrow they start searching door to door instead? I can be gone by morning.”
Kagome stood up and strode to where the hanyou struggled to right himself. He used the bed as leverage but quit his movements when she crouched down to meet him square in the eye.
“Absolutely not. I promised your sister.”
“She wouldn’t want this trouble for you, Kagome.”
“Well, she wouldn’t want you dead either.”
“Kagome,” Inuyasha lectured her as he hoisted himself up and sat on her bed. “How long are we supposed to keep going like this? I’ve seen the way you constantly peek through the curtains, the way you stare at the door like it’s gonna eat you. I hear you pace at night. Being scared all the time? It’s no life.”
“Neither is being dead.”
He conceded her point but wouldn’t let it end there. “I’m not going to burden you like this. If anything happened to you…” He looked at her, shaking his head, pleading with her to understand.
Kagome followed him to the bed. She rested a hand alongside his thigh and looked up at him, beautiful eyes wide and sincere.
“You are not a burden.”
Inuyasha sniffed at this, his amber eyes rolling.
“Inuyasha, I’m serious,” she scolded. “Listen to me. I’m not just doing this for you. I’m doing this because it is the right thing to do. No one should be rounded up and hunted.” Without pause Kagome reached up and rubbed the soft fur of his ear between her thumb and first finger. “Especially for something they have absolutely no control over.” She heard his sharp intake but kept her focus on the downy appendage.
Reddening slightly at the implied intimacy of the gesture, Kagome returned her hand to the quilt. “We can wait this out. At least give your brother some time to come up with something concrete, more certain. I’m sure when he figures it out, he’ll contact us,” she reasoned, trying to sound more confident than she felt. “Besides, you would run off into the woods like this? You still need me to walk you to the toilet in the morning,” Kagome laughed and tugged on his bandage.
Inuyasha pinched her shoulder, causing her to cry out.
“Ass! I should turn you in, it’d serve you right.” She stood up and made to turn around, but before walking away, she yanked sharply on a thick lock of his hair. Caught off guard he yelped and fell backwards onto the bed. Kagome called to him from the door.
“I have to run errands. Go wash up real quick and go back to your bed. You can have a shower tonight and if you’re a good boy, I’ll bring you home a treat.” She left the room, hair swishing behind her.
