InuYasha glanced at his phone. It was nearly one o’clock. His eyes scanned the sidewalk in front of their apartment building. From his vantage point on the roof of the two story market across the street he could see a good distance in either direction. Maybe he was being overly cautious but he wouldn’t take chances with Kagome’s safety.
A bus pulled up to the stop at the corner and passengers began to disembark. Last off was an elderly woman with long grey hair tied back in a ribbon wearing the robes of a miko. That had to be this Kaede didn’t it? He watched her as she headed straight towards their building and went inside. Satisfied that the chance of that not having been her was too small to worry about he continued to scan the street, looking for anyone who seemed suspicious or out of place just in case she hadn’t been alone or had been followed.
When nothing caught his eye for the new few minutes he went around to the back of the grocery store and dropped down into the alley near the trash bins. His nose wrinkled involuntarily at the smell but there was nothing to be done about that. Chances were that the old woman was probably just now being let into the apartment by Kagome and he didn’t want to leave them alone too long in spite of the fact that he trusted her instincts about the other miko. He waited for a break in traffic and jogged across the street. In his case taking the usually empty stairwell would be faster than the elevator. He bounded up a level a time and in less than a minute he was at their door.
Kagome greeted him with a smile as he stepped inside. “InuYasha, this is Kaede miko-sama.”
He stepped out of his shoes and moved into the living room, taking a seat right next to Kagome, a much closer than was strictly proper considering they had company but he wanted to be close just in case. Kagome tilted her head just enough to rest it for a moment against his shoulder and he knew she was telling him that she didn’t mind his nearness.
“Keh, I hear I have you thank for helping her out,” he offered.
If the elderly miko thought anything of their intimacy in her presence she hid it well. “No thanks are required. I was merely doing my duty.”
“It was more than that, Kaede-sama,” Kagome said. “You didn’t have to stop that other miko from saying those horrible things or to tell me I had the authority to release those youkai and you didn’t have to come here now.”
“Perhaps but even so my motivations are slightly selfish I will admit,” Kaede told her. “For sometime now I have been concerned about the path we have been set upon. I am only shikon class because of certain unique abilities I possess and was only assigned to you because no one truly believed a miko who consorted with youkai could possibly be of any real power or importance.”
InuYasha snorted. “Well, they really fucked up with that assessment, didn’t they?”
“Indeed, though perhaps it was fate,” Kaede replied. “Many, perhaps even most others would not have given her any indication that she is special among us. There are a great many who would have and now do fear what she represents. Change. It is said that those of Midori class power only appear in the world when needed, either to face a great evil or to restore balance. I fear in this case it may be both.”
Without a thought Kagome reached for InuYasha, the words of the elderly miko resonating with some part of herself, and instantly his hand was in hers, his youki enveloping her, speaking to her just as clearly as anything he might have said. He was with her, would stand beside her always and protect her with his life if need be.
“Remarkable,” Kaede said mostly to herself.
“What’s that, Kaede-sama?” Kagome asked.
“Oh, pay this old woman no mind,” Kaede replied. “One of those gifts I spoke of lets me see a bit differently than most. Good thing too since I only have the one eye.” She chuckled a little at her own joke. “I must say I have never before see reiki and youki interact the way yours do. Tell me child, does it take any conscious effort on your part to let him… shelter you in his youki as it were?”
“Oh, um no, I don’t have to do anything,” Kagome said. “And I don’t think he does either, right?” She looked to InuYasha. “My reiki, when I touch you with it, you don’t have to keep your youki from reacting?”
He shook his head. “I never really thought about it before but I guess it doesn’t make much sense does it? Nothing like that ever happened with Kikyou. She wanted me as human as possible and never would have let me use my youki on her if it had even been possible.”
Kaede arched a brow at him. “Another miko then, this Kikyou?”
InuYasha actually blushed a little. “Keh, yeah. She was pretty strong too but there wasn’t enough money in organized life, and she liked mine too much to give that up, especially not since she was planning to take a shot at killing me and getting it all, but don’t go thinking I’ve some sort of miko fetish or something.”
“InuYasha,” Kagome hissed. “Could you be more inappropriate!”
He laughed. “You really sure want to ask me that?”
“Rest assured I had no such thought, not with what I can see between you,” Kaede offered to ease Kagome’s embarrassment. “I should think that perhaps it was fate. I have come to the conclusion that there are no coincidences, even if the kami-sama seem to use a firmer hand in some lives than others.”
“Kaede-sama, what can you tell me about all this?” Kagome questioned. “About what I am and what it might mean.”
“As I said before there can be no doubt that you are Midori class, a designation rarely given,” Kaede replied. “Among our people there is no higher rank. There are none who may command you and all must abide your word as long as it does not go against the basic tenets of our calling, though you will find some disagreement as to exactly what those are. No matter what anyone tries to tell you to the contrary no one may sit in judgement of your choices or actions save the kami-sama as a matter of our most sacred and ancient laws.”
“So they can’t give her shit about being with me or try to claim it makes her less than she is,” InuYasha said.
“Oh they will most assuredly try, but she must not accept their words as truth. A little known fact that many would deny and has been buried in our history is that the greatest among us such as yourself, have oft worked with youkai, seen them as individuals instead of indiscriminately painting them all with the same brush, ” Kaede said. “It was why I knew I must come speak to you before you are called to service. Also, the highest ranking miko must always perform a Kagura for setsubun.”
Kagome blinked and shook her head. “I can’t. I’m not even sure I remember… It’s been almost ten years since I danced at a ceremony.”
“I am afraid this is a duty you cannot refuse,” Kaede told her. “Besides as you know there are many styles of Kagura. In fact I would suggest that you go outside of tradition and perhaps introduce a great many to the idea that reiki does not have to work against youki. I am certain you could find a willing partner. How is your dancing, young hanyou?”
“I couldn’t,” Kagome tried. “I mean what if someone tries to hurt him? I can’t make a barrier to protect him.”
“I assure you I may be of few talents but none can match my vision or my barriers,” Kaede said. “I fear that if something is not done soon there may be no turning from this dark path we have set upon. I have heard some disturbing rumors about more captured youkai. That there have been experiments and perhaps even deaths. I would not see us go to war not when we have so long lived in peace.”
“Do you really think it would help?” Kagome asked.
“I look at you, child and see such a light,” Kaede said. “And I truly believe that you will be the one to lead us out of the dark, you and he who would stand sentinel to see that none is allowed to extinguish that light.”
Kagome met her hanyou’s eyes. “What do you think?”
“Keh, can’t say that I’ve ever been much of a dancer, but what the hell,” he said with a smirk. “Try everything once, right?”
“Really?” she asked.
He gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “I’m with you, always.”
“I’ll leave it to you, then,” Kaede said coming to her feet. “I will also keep my eyes and ears open and should I find out any proof that the youkai no taishou might be able to use then I will pass it along. Please don’t hesitate to call me should you have any other questions.”
“I’ll show you out,” Kagome offered.
She escorted the elderly miko to the door and then returned to InuYasha, but instead of sitting beside him she situated herself in his lap. As she snuggled into him, she wasn’t surprised by the way he curled his arms around her or to feel his nose in her hair. It was more than a little overwhelming. Up until just over a year ago, she’d been living a perfectly ordinary life. She’d had a job that she loved, good friends and her family. Maybe there were a few things missing, like what she had now with InuYasha but it had still been pretty darn good, and for the most part she’d been happy.
She hadn’t asked for this, hadn’t asked for this youkai or whatever he was to come after her, or to be some sort of super miko. Her entire life she’d tried her best to be a good person and in spite of that she was faced with what felt like one impossible situation after another. Even though she hadn’t made a sound InuYasha’s arms tightened around her and she squeezed her eyes tightly shut to keep from crying.
“You want to talk about it?” he asked quietly.
She breathed in the scent of him, concentrated on how safe she felt in his arms. “I don’t know. Sometimes it all feels like it’s too much. We haven’t even had a chance to figure out who is after me and you heard what Kaede miko-sama said. She said midori class miko appear to restore balance or face a great evil, but in my case it feels like I’m supposed to do both, and I have no idea how to do either, if I’m even capable of either one.”
“Keh, first of all I know you underestimate yourself,” he said. “You are stronger than you realize and remember you won’t be alone, won’t ever be alone. I’ll be right there beside you.The Kami-sama chose you because you’re a good person and won’t abuse the great power you were given and they chose me to protect you. Believe in that Kagome.”
She smiled a little as she looked up at him. “You make it really hard for me to worry when you sound so sure of yourself.”
He laughed lightly. “Good. I guess being a cocky bastard has it’s uses after all.”
She giggled a little even as she rolled her eyes. “I would have gone with arrogant ass, myself.”
“Oi!” he protested. “What kind of thing is that to say after I just agreed to go to miko central and dance a fucking purifying dance with you?”
Her eyes met his and her smile slipped towards something softer filled with a familiar sort of promise. “Hmm, maybe you’re right. I’m sorry. I should have said amazingly sexy arrogant ass.”
He flashed her a fangy grin. “Much better, woman. Now, go make us lunch or something while I make some calls. I need to check in with Sesshomaru and hit up some of my old contacts. It’s time I got to work getting rid of this bastard.”
Kagome hadn’t given much thought to what InuYasha might have found out while he made his calls until later that night when they settled into bed. Well, not as soon as they went to bed, since he’d seen to it that she hadn’t really been able to think at all, but after as she laid against him, the warmth of his body seeping into her skin, and as she was headed towards sleep, she did begin to wonder a little. She knew that if it had really been anything important he would have told her right away. She pressed her lips to his chest and hugged him a little more tightly with the arm draped across his middle. “I guess nothing came of your calls this afternoon then?”
“Nah, not really,” he replied. “I wasn’t expecting much, not yet. I did get an update on the kids though. The kit and her mom are safe at their new home and the pup is already bossing my brother’s toad around like a pro.”
She giggled. “I know Sesshomaru didn’t tell you that.”
His deep masculine laugh joined her. “Nah, he just said the kid was doing fine, but I heard him telling Jaken to quit pestering Sesshomaru and make himself useful instead. I’m pretty sure I even heard what passed for a laugh from my brother when he said it.”
“That’s good at least,” Kagome said quietly. “I hate to think he was unhappy there on top of everything he’s been through already.”
“I know kicking around that little toady always did wonders towards cheering me up,” he offered. “Other than that though I just got a few more people keeping their eyes and ears open for any information about whoever the hell this asshole really is.”
She nodded a little. “Truth be told right at this moment I’m more worried about what Kaede said today. I know you’ll protect me and It took him a while to find me before but we only have a couple of week until setsubun.”
“You have faith in me, right? Well I have faith in you,” he told her. “You will definitely figure it out. The kami-sama or whoever chose you to be this badass miko because they knew you were up to the job, and I’ll help you however I…”
His voice trailed off as he felt her reiki expand and realized her breathing and heart rate had slowed way down. He slipped out from under her carefully and sat up so that he could take a look at her. It didn’t smell like anything was wrong, but her staring off into space was definitely not normal. He knew he might have been imagining things but it even seemed like her eyes glowing a little, that or they were a few shades lighter than they usually were.
InuYasha felt his face heat as she sucked in a quick breath all of the studden and sat up, causing him to jump. Luckily she didn’t seem to have noticed. “Kagome, you okay?”
“What?” she breathed and then she blinked. “Oh, yeah, I’m okay. I just, I don’t know happened, but I know what we need to do now for the kagura at setsubun. You were talking about the kami-sama and how they chose me and it was sort of like everything else went away and I could see it in my head. Miroku and Sango are supposed to be there too, with us. Do you think they’ll agree to help?”
“Keh, you really have to ask?” he teased with a smirk. “I mean it’s not like you’re asking them to risk their lives or anything crazy like that.”
She blushed but smiled too. “Okay, okay, I get your point. I guess it was a stupid question all things considered.”
“Very stupid,” he agreed as he leaned over her, urging her onto her back, his lips against hers. “Good thing for you that I’m with you for you body and not your brains.”
She laughed, pushing against him. “You jerk! Maybe that’s why I’m with you.”
“Oh I know it,” he assured her. “I’m totally okay with it too, just so you know, and you’ll be okay with it too, here in just a minute.”
She arched and gasped as he teased her with his fingers, making sure that she was ready before he joined with her in a single smooth thrust. “Mmmm, I’m there already.”
The ensuing chuckle that followed her words warmed her further and she shivered as he nipped lightly at her skin. It seemed impossible that she should find herself wanting him so very much every time, no matter how many times they were together, but she did and she knew this was what it was supposed to be like. They were supposed to tease each other and laughter together, and want each other so much that it never felt like enough.
“Damn I love you,” he murmured against her throat as if he could read her mind.
“I know,” she said a breathless laugh escaping her. “Now shut up already and prove it.”
He groaned as she slid her hands down his back and gave his ass a firm squeeze. “Shit, that’s my demanding woman. Never change.”
“I won’t if you won’t,” she agreed.
“Deal,” he said, sealing their mutual promise with a fierce and tender sort of kiss.
