Kagome was more than a little nervous as they waited for Miroku to arrive. She wasn’t worried that he would put her in danger by telling anyone about her and InuYasha, no matter how upset he might be, but he was her first and oldest friend and she would be heartbroken if she lost him now. InuYasha held her a little more tightly against him and she was grateful for his comfort.
When Miroku knocked she stiffened. “Would you wait in the kitchen?”
He nodded and left her to let the monk in alone. He didn’t like it but he wouldn’t make things more difficult for her. Besides it was his own stupid idea in the first place and he would just have to deal with whatever came of it.
Kagome opened the door and greeted Miroku with a smile. “Come in.”
“You are looking a little peaked,” Miroku said as he stepped inside. “Are you feeling alright?”
“I should ask you the same thing,” she told him. “You don’t usually start off your conversations with women by telling them they look unwell.”
He grinned. “I suppose you are correct on that account. Rest assured that in spite of that you remain as lovely as ever, but since you are my friend before being a woman in my eyes, my first concern in for your health.”
“That’s a little better,” she said. “Let’s go to the kitchen. I’ll put on some water for tea and hopefully convince you that I’m perfectly okay.”
They entered the kitchen and she ignored Miroku as his face darkened upon seeing InuYasha. She filled up the kettle and set it on the stove to heat before taking a seat at the table. She motioned for Miroku to sit across from her and then took a steadying breath to gather her courage.
“I need to tell you something important,” Kagome said taking Miroku’s hand.
Miroku eyed InuYasha as he leaned against the wall behind her his arms folded across his chest. “Why is he here?”
“Don’t worry about him right now,” Kagome replied. “He already knows what I need to talk to you about.”
“Kagome, we have been friends for almost our entire lives, whatever it is, you can trust me,” Miroku told her.
She nodded and swallowed past the lump in her throat. “I’m pregnant.”
“Why were you so worried?” Miroku asked. “This is wonderful news. Certainly everyone will be pleased to see the line of Midoriko continued. Though, I am surprised. Who is the father? Last we spoke of this you told me there was no one you felt comfortable choosing to father your child.”
“I’m going to tell you, but first I need you to promise me that you won’t overreact,” she said.
“Why would I…” Miroku’s voice died as Kagome glanced back over her shoulder. It was almost imperceptible the way InuYasha’s look softened as their eyes met, but still undeniable. Kagome looked back at him and he shook his head. “No. Surely not. You wouldn’t… you couldn’t.”
He jerked his hand out of Kagome’s and stood up. This was madness. InuYasha growled and stepped closer to Kagome. He could not believe his eyes and she raised her hand searching for him. He took her hand and she pulled it against her chest.
“You cannot be serious,” Miroku shouted. “Of all the… Do you have any idea what you have done? How could you?”
“Oi, quit fucking yelling at her,” InuYasha snarled as he knelt beside her and wrapped his arms around Kagome as she tried her best not to burst into tears. “You claim to be her friend but you won’t let her talk.”
“You, this is your doing,” Miroku said as he glared at the hanyou. “Kagome, if he coerced you in any way you have but to tell me and I will see him dealt with.”
InuYasha stood up, “Now wait a damn minute, Bouzo.”
Miroku faced InuYasha, only the table and Kagome in her chair between them. “I knew it was madness to trust a youkai. This was probably your plan all along. A clever way to destroy The Great Miko as you promised on the day you met.”
“Fuck you,” InuYasha said with a growl. “Why don’t you say that shit to me off the shrine grounds if you have the balls?”
“Gladly,” Miroku spat.
Kagome stood up tears pouring down her cheeks. “Stop it! Both of you, please!”
InuYasha immediately wrapped his arms around her and smoothed her hair in an attempt to soothe her. “See what you did?” he hissed at the monk.
“What I did?” Miroku repeated his eyebrows raised. “She is in this situation because of what you did.”
“It wasn’t just him,” Kagome said turning to look at her oldest friend. “And he didn’t do anything that I didn’t want him to. Please Miroku, try to understand.”
“What is there to understand? Miroku questioned. “There is only one thing to be done. You must get rid of it before anyone else finds out.”
Kagome gasped and put a hand over her stomach. InuYasha was growling and he pulled her back further away from Miroku. How could her best friend even suggest that she get rid of her baby, as if it was his decision to make? Who was this man in her kitchen because it certainly wasn’t the boy she had befriended all those years ago.
“I love him,” she said quietly. “I love him and our baby. Miroku, we didn’t plan this. It just happened, but I’m not sorry it did. From the moment we met, there was something between us. I tried to ignore it, told myself that I couldn’t follow through on what I was feeling, but it was no use, and now I have been blessed with a child created not because of duty but out of love and you want me to throw that away? Well, I won’t.”
“Kagome, how can you claim to love him?” Miroku asked. “He’s not even human. Are youkai even capable of love?”
“He’s half human, and he loves me too,” she said quietly.
“How can I believe that? How can you believe that?” Miroku demanded. “How do you know he didn’t seduce you so that he and his brother might undermine us from within?”
“She is my mate,” InuYasha told him. “Do you know what that means? She is my center, my balance, the other half of my heart. I would pledge myself to her body and soul for the rest of my long life right now if it wouldn’t bring the whole fucking world crashing down on us.”
Miroku didn’t want to believe the hanyou, but there could be no denying the simple honesty in his words. “Kagome, this… there will be consequences. Perhaps someday such a joining would be accepted but I fear the world is simply not ready.”
“Well, it better fucking get ready, because I’m not giving her up,” InuYasha said.
Kagome finally realized that Miroku was only being so mean because he was afraid for her. “I am hoping that if I can find the truth and end this war that it will pave the way for us to be together.”
“You are risking so much,” Miroku tried. “And what happens when the baby starts producing youki.”
Kagome slipped off the rosary and Miroku’s eyes widened. “I found a way to hide that already. No one will know that the baby is part youkai, but I was counting on your help too.”
“What can I do?” he asked.
Kagome slipped the beads back over her hand and onto her wrist and then looked to InuYasha who gave her an encouraging nod. “You can choose not deny it when they all start to assume that it’s yours. You know they will. You’re the only one close enough to me with enough access to be the father. I’m not asking you to tell people that the baby is yours, only that you don’t tell them that it isn’t.”
Miroku looked at InuYasha.” And you are really okay with people thinking that she is having my child?”
“Keh, hell no, but it’s better than the alternative,” InuYasha said. “You once told me that you felt you owed her a debt that could never be repaid. Well, here is your chance.”
Miroku sat back down and the table and put his head in his hands. Of course Kagome was right. Everyone would assume that she had chosen him to father her child. He raised his head and looked up at them. Kagome had her hands on his chest and his were cupping her face gently. There could be no mistaking their feelings for one another as their lips met with such tenderness.
“It’ll be okay,” the hanyou said quietly resting his forehead against hers.
“I still say this is madness,” Miroku said quietly.
“However, I will keep your secret and I will not correct any assumptions that the child is mine.”
Kagome went over to him and hesitantly put her hand on his shoulder. “Thank you.”
He sighed and covered her hand with his own. “This will not be an easy path, but I will not add to your difficulties as long as you are certain that this is what you really want. I assume you will want to wait until someone notices rather than making an announcement.”
Kagome nodded. “I know it won’t be long before someone senses it, but I’ve always been private about my personal life so no one will think it’s strange that I was keeping it to myself.”
Miroku pushed back from the table and stood up. “I need to get back. Kagome… I’m sorry for my initial reaction. I still say this is madness, but my words caused you pain and that I do regret.”
Kagome managed a small smile. “Thank you, and believe me I know how crazy this is all things considered, but please hear me when I say that everything, everything inside me tells me that this is what is meant to be. InuYasha and I are meant to be together.”
“I’ll try,” Miroku replied. “Do not forget you are expected tomorrow at eight. Kikyou will no doubt be there trying to stir up trouble and you cannot afford to lose any of the support you have gained over the last weeks. I will see you then.”
Miroku departed and as soon as he was gone InuYasha took her in his arms and held her close. She closed her eyes as he nuzzled her neck and tried not to think too much about the future. She would live in the moment, at least as for as long as this moment lasted and she was held safely in his arms. She’d mean what she said to Miroku. She knew in her heart that they were supposed to be together and that he was certain that she was his mate only cemented that fact in her mind.
“So, did that go better or worse than you expected?” he asked quietly.
“Hmm, worse at the beginning, and better at the end, I think,” she replied. “What about you?”
“Keh, better all around,” he admitted. “I fully expected to be battling it out with him the street over having ruined the Great Miko with my filthy hanyou lust.”
She lifted her head and their eyes met. “He’s wrong and you haven’t ruined anything. You’ve made me a better Great Miko with your love. Though, the lust is pretty amazing too all on its own.”
He chuckled lightly. “I wonder what they would think if they knew their Great Miko was such a hentai. Gods, woman I fucking love you.”
Her eyes took on a particular shine but when she grinned it was with wicked promise. “Are you sure you didn’t mean to say that you love fucking me, because I wouldn’t be opposed to letting you love me like that right now.”
He growled and scooped her up into his arms. “You are going to be the death of me, but I can’t think of a better way to go.”
~ * ~
Kagome smiled in pure contentment as he looked down at her. She could feel him softening within her and only hoped that he didn’t have to rush off. She leaned up and brushed her lips across his before falling back onto the pillow. The way he was looking at her was unfamiliar and though she was a little concerned, it wasn’t because she was worried that anything was wrong.
“What is it?” she asked.
He swallowed hard against the lump in his throat. “Would you take it off, the rosary?”
Her eyes widened a little and she found that she didn’t dare speak for fear of bursting into happy tears. So, instead of answering him that way she brought her arms up between them and removed the enchanted beads, and then set them aside on the table by the bed. She didn’t know what to make of it as he moved off of her, but was relieved that he had only done so that he could position himself with his head on her breasts and once clawed hand against her still flat belly.
He caressed her carefully, occasionally lifting his head and placing a tender kiss against her just below her belly button. She didn’t know how long they stayed like that, only too happy to lose track of time with him. She rubbed his ears whenever they were in reach which he didn’t seem to mind at all.
Her heart was as full to bursting and she didn’t know of anything that could make her happier than she was until she heard him say, “Oyaji loves you, pup.”
There was no way she could hold back her tears at his quiet declaration and she didn’t try to. They slid down her cheeks and into her hair and of course it didn’t take him long to notice. He didn’t say anything and instead simply kissed her as he used his thumbs to wipe them away.
“Those had better be happy tears, woman,” he teased.
She laughed a little but nodded. “But we are raising this pup to be more polite than that, I hope you realize, otou-san.”
He snorted. “We’ll see.”
She laughed again and he smiled at her in a way that took her breath away. Shiori had been right when she said that he was going to want their baby in a way that would surprise them both. In that moment she decided that no matter they would be together even if they had to run away and disappear. No one was going to come between them, no matter what they had to do.
They both looked at the pile of discarded clothing on the floor as it started to ring. InuYasha growled and touched her face before getting up and digging around for his phone. “It’s Sesshomaru. I should have checked in before now.”
“It’s okay,” she said, meaning it, even if she was disappointed.
He looked at the phone and then back at her. “You know what fuck it. I ain’t ready to go yet.” He answered the call. “I’m busy. I’ll let you know when I’m done here.”
Kagome watched as he ended the call and then turned off his phone. Of course she was glad that he wanted to stay and she really wasn’t ready for him to go, but she also didn’t want to cause him problems with his brother. “Are you sure it’s okay to do that?”
He made a harrumphing sound as he got back into bed and rested his head against her breasts once more. “He’s going to be fucking pissed, but I don’t give a fuck. It’s not like he can actually do anything to me. I’ve been immune to his commands since puberty. He knows I only permit him to act as my alpha to keep a united front.”
She gasped. “I’d heard that certain youkai could impose their will on others, but I wasn’t sure it was true.”
“It’s something only daiyoukai can do, and then only to youkai weaker than themselves, which for Sesshomaru is pretty much everyone but me.” He chuckled a little. “I still remember the look on his face the first time I told him to fuck off after he tried that shit on me ordering me to my room for some stupid bullshit. Hell, most of the clan lords can’t do it. No one seated more than two chairs down from you at the gathering is strong enough and even then it won't always work. If the other youkai caught up in their blood rage they can ignore it.”
She figured it was probably a good thing that it wasn’t something a lot of youkai could do. It would be easy to abuse such a power. “I have a feeling I am going to wish I could do that with my reiki tomorrow when Kikyou won’t shut up. She still refuses to believe that I could have healed a youkai as if I would lie about that…” Her voice trailed off as she remembered something about that day. “You commanded that youkai woman when she thought I was going to hurt her daughter, didn’t you.”
“Just a little to get her to calm down,” he replied. “I don’t do it very often. In fact I’ve only done it twice in recent memory.”
“Oh, when was the other time?” she asked.
He lifted his head and looked at her, his face heating. “Fuck, you would have to ask that. Damn it, I used it so Yura wouldn’t tell anyone I couldn’t keep it up when she came to my rooms and to make her leave. I can’t believe I just fucking told you that either.”
She giggled as he frowned. “Sorry, I’m not laughing at you, I promise. I’m sure there are a lot of men who would have done the same thing if they could have, and to be honest, I’m glad my hanyou only has eyes… and that, for me.”
He rolled his eyes, but the furrow between his brows eased and he laid back down against her. “You aren’t nearly as funny as you think you are, woman.”
“We’ll just have to agree to disagree on that point, my handsome hanyou,” she said as she went back to enjoying the softness of his ears between her fingertips. “But I really wasn’t laughing at you. I love you and even in hundreds of years when you are old and can’t even get it up for me, I’ll still love you.”
He growled and she squealed as he attacked her, tickling her mercilessly until she was breathless and crying, begging him to stop. He nibbled her throat as she panted, trying to catch her breath. “Fuck, woman, I really do love you.”
“I love you too,” she replied.
