Chapter 164 - The Gift *Resolution to Fight* & *Blue Moon*
Sesshoumaru glanced over at his mother, checking to see if she was behaving herself. He didn't trust the bitch to not attempt to injure Kagome if she got close enough; so he hooked the end of her new leash under a heavy candle stand to keep her in place. She met his gaze, giving him the coldest look she could manage in her current form, and he knew that she had not yet accepted her punishment or her new place in the palace.
The taiyoukai had been quite amused to find Inuyasha in his mother's chambers, struggling to tighten down the harness that Kagome had brought for her. He learned quickly that the hanyou had been wrestling with her for quite some time and for a moment he was impressed with his mother's ability to evade a being so much faster and stronger than she was. Sesshoumaru joined in and held the mortal canine down to allow his brother to finish the job.
Inuyasha seemed especially cold, and the taiyoukai was confused as to why his younger brother seemed so angry with him. He shook it off, however, when it became apparent that the hanyou was not going to confront him or explain in any way. Instead, Inuyasha had to head back to his own chambers to attempt to remove all of the goose down feathers that had become stuck to his clothing and in his hair while Sesshoumaru escorted his mother to the dining hall.
On the way, he explained that she was being given a chance, at Kagome's request, to show that she could behave so that, perhaps, she could earn the privilege of leaving her room and roaming the palace freely. He knew his mother was tired of being cooped up in the bedroom she destroyed, but he doubted she would manage to prove herself trustworthy. Her outrage was still obvious, and he expected she would act out every chance she could.
Start *Blue Moon*
Once everyone was seated, Sesshoumaru rose. "There is something I need to do before dinner arrives, and I would like you all to be witnesses." The taiyoukai pulled out a wooden box and set it on the table in front of Kagome.
"What's this?" she asked.
"Your mating gift," he replied in a warm tone that wrapped itself around her like a cocoon.
"I told you I didn't need anything," Kagome chided gently.
"And I told you that you would still be receiving one. A mating gift is tradition and very important. Please, open it."
The miko glanced around at her friends before lifting the lid of the box. When she saw what it contained, she gasped. "Oh, Sesshoumaru, it's beautiful!"
And it was. Laid out on silk inside the box was a necklace. The chain was comprised of two very intricately made and delicately entwined chains of silver and gold. The pendant hanging at the bottom was a thin slice of golden agate, which Kagome instantly recognized from one of the bags they had collected. Sesshoumaru had cracked the stone in half and shown them the beautiful contents within. In front of the circle of agate was a perfectly carved and highly polished crescent moon made of lapis lazuli, and along the chain hung pearls, crystals, and carefully shaped beads fashioned from coral.
"Are these all..." Kagome started.
"The items from the spell bags, yes," Sesshoumaru finished for her. "A traditional inu mating gift must contain all seven elements."
"I get it now!" Shippo exclaimed, startling everyone who had been fully focused on Kagome's new necklace. "That's why they were in the bags! That was what made it so that only a woman who loves Sesshoumaru could find the spell bags. I didn't know about inu mating gifts. It all makes sense now."
The miko smiled at the kitsune before returning her gaze to Sesshoumaru. "It's amazing."
"I am glad you like it," Sesshoumaru said while lifting it gently from the box. He laid it around Kagome's neck, and she lifted her hair so that he could close the clasp. "The intricacy of the mating gift tells the world how much the male values his desired female."
"That's interesting," Miroku chimed in. "So not everyone puts the items together in the same way?"
"Some do not put the items together at all. My parent's mating was arranged and purely political. My father simply handed my mother a bag containing the raw materials. It was a slight against her that did not bode well for their relationship."
Kagome covered her mouth with her hand and looked at the dog sitting stiffly a short distance away. "That's terrible! He basically said she wasn't worth anything to him!"
"Indeed," Sesshoumaru agreed.
"I don't think I've ever seen something so beautiful," the miko said with a smile as she admired the layered pendant on her chest.
"I have," the taiyoukai purred. "And she is sitting right beside me, though I do admit, Totosai did a wonderful job."
"Totosai made it?" Kagome asked.
"I could think of no one better, or more skilled, and I was correct. The necklace is made with the highest level of craftsmanship possible, and it fits you perfectly. He was quite surprised to learn who I intended to make my mate."
The sound of his angel's laughter made Sesshoumaru's heart beat faster, and he knelt at her side to kiss her passionately. Now nothing stood in his way. He could make Kagome his mate just as soon as she was ready, and he had a feeling she would not deny him nor make him wait. All that was left to deal with was Naraku, and then everything in his life would be absolutely perfect.
