Kagome reached over and ran her hand across the cool and empty side of the bed. InuYasha had stayed much later than he probably should have but it warmed her heart to think about how much he hadn’t wanted to leave her. She glanced at the clock and knew that she had to get up so that she could go down and face off against Kikyou and the rest of her opposition, but it didn’t mean she was looking forward to it.
She sat up with a sigh and gave herself a moment to adjust, hoping that it would keep her from needing to make a mad rush for the bathroom. She concentrated on the trace of youki within her and realized that even if she did get it sick, it would be well worth it in the end. Of course, that reminded her that she couldn’t forget to put the rosary back on and so it was probably best just to go ahead and do it right now.
Once the beads were back on she felt confident that she wasn’t going to throw up and headed for the bathroom to take a quick shower. While she washed herself she decided that it might be better just to have some tea and crackers before heading out, just in case. Someone would figure out she was pregnant soon enough without her having a bout of ill timed and ill named morning sickness.
She got out and wrapped herself in a towel before drying her hair. She studied her reflection and searched for any of the magical changes people claimed were visible when a woman got pregnant. She sure didn’t see any glow about herself or anything else that might reveal her condition on sight alone. She shrugged and set down the hair dryer, replacing it with her toothbrush.
“Oh no,” she said quickly setting it back on the counter as the smell sent her stomach into flips.
She took several deep breaths and was thankful when nausea passed. She quickly washed all traces of toothpaste from the bristles and then brushed her teeth as best she could with warm water. She hated feeling like her mouth wasn’t really clean but there was nothing she could do about that. It didn’t take her long to put on her robes and soon she was headed down stairs.
She put the kettle on to heat the water for her tea and grabbed the box of ginger crackers from the cabinet. She was definitely going to have get some more of those soon, since it was almost empty. As she sat down her cell phone rang and she jumped, laughing at herself as she picked it up.
She smiled upon seeing that it was InuYasha calling her. “Hey you.”
“You sound a hell of a lot better than yesterday,” he said.
“I feel pretty good this morning,” she told him. “There was almost an incident with the toothpaste, where the smell almost made me sick, but it passed.”
“You use that cinnamon shit, don’t you,” he said thoughtfully. “You oughta try mint instead. There’s a brand too that most youkai use because it’s milder than the others. I’ll get some for you and bring it by when I get a chance.”
Kagome was sure that she must be grinning from ear to ear. He definitely wasn’t going to be one of those men who wasn’t interested in being involved with the pregnancy. “That would be really nice, thank you. So how mad was your brother.”
“Keh, I expected him to start foaming at the mouth any second,” he replied. “He’s still pissed, but he’ll get over it. Besides it was worth it. Listen, I have to go, but I want you to call me if you need anything, or if anything happens big or small. Promise me. Shit, I just wish I could be there with you all the time.”
She swallowed hard. “Me too and I promise. I love you.”
“I love you too, both of you,” he replied. “I’ll call when I can.”
The call ended and she went to get the water from the stove. She didn’t know about youkai from personal experience, how they expressed or felt love, though she was certain that they must, but hanyou definitely loved and her hanyou loved well.

Kagome wasn’t surprised to see Miroku waiting for her on the stairs as she approached the main branch building. It was probably even a good thing that he was because once her pregnancy was out, it would help fuel their deception. So would the fact that he came down the stairs and offered her his arm. She arched her brow at him and he shrugged. Now she knew for certain that he was playing up their relationship and she tried to convey her gratitude by giving his arm a soft squeeze. He opened the door and ushered her inside.
“You’re a good friend,” she said quietly. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”
He glanced at her as they headed down the hallway. “You’d do what you always have, and lead us all with your wisdom and your love. I truly do hope all can be as you envision and I am with you no matter what my personal feelings may be.”
“I hope so too,” she said as he opened the door for her.
She looked around and noticed that she was the last to arrive with Miroku even though she was a few minutes early. She headed for her chair at the head of the long table and the other top ranking miko, houshi and priests made their way to their seats as well. She waited until everyone else was seated as was custom, but before she could sit she heard a loud gasp. To her right Aiko was staring at her with wide eyes.
“Kagome-sama, you are with child,” she breathed.
Well, there went the hope that it would take a little longer for anyone to notice, but wasn’t that why Aiko sat at her left ahead of Kikyou, because there was no other who was so gifted at seeing changes in the aura that signaled things like illness, both physical and mental, and in this case pregnancy. Everyone began trying to talk at once until she held up her hand.
When they quieted she cleared her throat and said, “Yes, I’m pregnant. I was going to wait until I was little further along to announce it. I think it is enough to say that the father is aware and I am pleased and excited, but would appreciate being allowed my privacy for anything beyond that.”
Just as she had expected, everyone accepted her statement and aside from congratulating her kept any other questions to themselves, no matter how curious they might have been. She took her seat and then proceeded to update them on the progress they were making on the scrolls. Miroku aided her by passing out copies of what had been cataloged so far.
Kikyou flipped through the pages, barely glancing at them and then dropped them on the table. “I still don’t see the point of all this. There is no guarantee you will find anything and even if you do, when it is revealed that the hanyou abomination committed the betrayal the youkai will still never acknowledge that fact and submit.”
Kagome frowned at the murmurs of assent and made a mental note of who was making them. “This isn’t about getting the youkai to submit to anything. It’s about finding the truth and putting an end to all the fighting, the killing.”
“And yet you let a murderer go free,” Makoto spat.
“Have you ever killed a youkai, Makoto-sama?” Kagome asked.
“You know I have, but never one that wasn’t trying to kill me first,” he replied. “I don’t see why that matters.”
“It matters because if defending your own life doesn’t make you a murderer then Inoue-sama is not a murderer either,” she said. “He was defending himself against a group of people trying to capture or kill him when he had done nothing except follow Tsubaki who led him into a trap so that she could escape and go into hiding because she knew that she had been found out as a traitor and a spy.”
“So you say,” Kikyou said with a sneer. “The only proof we have that she was a spy is the word of a youkai. For all we know she is in hiding because she fears for her life, or she was the one who discovered you colluding with the youkai against us.”
“You go too far,” Miroku protested. Kagome was relieved to see that almost everyone agreed with him as he continued, “Say what you will of her plan for peace with the youkai, but Kagome-sama has never had anything but the best interests of our people at heart.”
As other’s nodded Kikyou was forced to try and save face. “I apologize for my earlier supposition. Of course I believe that Kagome-sama’s intentions are good, but I believe she is wrong about this truce with the youkai being what is best.”
“I know we have never really seen eye to eye, Kikyou-sama, and that you only said what you did because you too want what is best for all of us,” Kagome said. “I also know that you aren’t the only one who thinks that what I am doing is wrong or that lasting peace with the youkai is impossible, but I say you're wrong about that. We shared more than a millennium of peace with them once before I truly believe that it can be so again. Do I think it will be easy? No, but don’t we owe it to the next generation to try, to spare them another five hundred years of war?”
“And what if the youkai refuse to accept that their side broke the treaty first or worse what if by some unimaginable twist of fate is was our side who is responsible? What will happen then? I can see no good in either scenario,” Hiroshi offered.
“Are you advocating willful ignorance?” Miroku asked his tone defensive.
Kagome reached over and touched his arm, noticing the way everyone followed her hand as she touched him and practically seeing them decide that he had to be the father of her baby. “Miroku-sama, I am certain that is not what Hiroshi-sama was saying. His questions are valid and I’ll do my best to address them.”
Miroku glanced at her. “As you say, Kagome-sama.”
She offered him a small smile and then turned her attention back to Hiroshi and the others. “I have met Sesshomaru personally, sat at a table with him and the other youkai lords and it is my belief that he cares about the truth above assigning blame, just as I do. I ask, at this point does it really matter how it started beyond finding out the truth of it? I can state with all confidence that Sesshomaru-sama has no desire to subjugate us or have us groveling at his feet, begging forgiveness for something that happened centuries ago, just as I do not desire such a thing from him. So much good has already come about. We haven’t lost anyone since I signed the truce and that is the best result I could have imagined.”
“Surely you can understand that not all of us have such faith in the… honor of the youkai,” Makoto tried.
“I do understand,” Kagome said. “But I’m not asking you to have faith in them. I am asking you to have faith in me.”

Kagome sagged as she sat in the chair behind her desk as soon as Miroku had closed the door. She looked up and then thanked him as he offered her a bottle of water from the small fridge in the corner of the room. She took a big drink and then set the bottle on her desk.
“That was well played,” he told her. “What could they say, that they lacked faith in you? Not even Kikyou would be so bold after how her first attempt at discrediting your motives was received. I think you won over at least a couple more of them today.”
“I hope so,” she said. “I hope that they’ll read all the scrolls so far and at least try to look at them objectively. If the InuYasha of legend had been a human man none of them could doubt his feelings for her based on what he wrote.”
“I have to admit that he did seem to care about her if his words are to be believed,” Miroku offered grudgingly. “In fact from an objective viewpoint it would seem that Kikyou was the one who was struggling with what he was where as he was merely struggling with his own insecurities.”
Kagome picked up the cold bottle of water and ran it across her forehead to try and stave of a sudden wave of nausea. There was so much she needed to do before heading home. She really didn’t want to get sick now.
“Are you alright?” Miroku asked.
She was afraid to open her mouth just yet so she nodded and held up one finger to let him know that she just needed a minute. Slowly it passed and she took a few sips of water. “I guess I’d better hurry and get some work done.”
“There is no reason you can’t take all of this paperwork home with you and see to it there,” he told her. “I can swing by later and collect it. Now that your condition is know, no one will think anything of it. You also might want to consult with someone about your pregnancy and what to expect.”
He’d chosen his words carefully, but his meaning was clear and she supposed he was right. She really should ask InuYasha what to expect. More than that she couldn’t just go to any doctor or midwife. It would have to be someone who knew about hanyou births and could be trusted. She would also need InuYasha for that.
“You’re right,” she admitted. “I’ll need something to carry these home in and I think it would be best if I took a cab.”
“I’ll see to,” he told her. “And you can borrow my messenger bag. I’ll just go get it from my office.
She nodded and once he was gone she pulled out her cell phone to call InuYasha and see when he could meet with her. She brought up his number in her contacts and pressed the call button. The phone barely had time to ring once before he was there on the line.
“Just a sec,” he told her.
She could hear him talking to someone but not what he was saying and then a long minute passed and she heard a door close.
“Okay,” he replied. “Is everything alright?”
“Just a little morning sickness, but not too bad,” she told him. “Miroku and I were talking and I realized that there is some stuff I need to ask you. I’m actually about to leave here and finish up working back at the shrine where if I have to throw up there won’t be a hundred people coming in and out asking me if I’m okay. Do you think you can come by today at some point?”
“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” he said. “Sesshomaru has me scheduled to do shit all day, but I’ll find a way to get out of it, it just might take me a couple of hours. Is that okay? If it’s not, just say so and I’ll tell him to go fuck himself and come right now.”
She smiled a little. “Is it wrong that it makes me happy to hear you say you’d tell your brother to go fuck himself just to come talk to me?”
“Hell no, it’s not wrong,” he replied. “You want me to do it?”
She knew he was absolutely serious. “A few hours will be fine. It will give me time to get my work done.”
“If you’re sure,” he said. “Just know that nothing is more important to me than you and our pup.”
“I was beginning to suspect that actually,” she teased. “I love you and don’t forget my toothpaste. I’m definitely going to need it if this morning sickness keeps up.”
“You got it, woman,” he told her. “I’ll see you soon.”
Kagome ended the call just as the door opened to admit Miroku. He helped her put all the documents she needed to review and sign into the messenger bag he had returned with and then escorted her outside to where a cab was waiting for her. He closed the door for her and she waved as they pulled away from the curb. She looked back and noticed that he was now surrounded and knew they surely must be asking him about her and the pregnancy. He might feel like he owed her for giving him access to his powers but she knew that she was really the one indebted.
She paid the cab driver as he pulled to a stop at the base of the shrine stairs. She made the long climb and was relieved to be home. Her stomach rumbled and she knew that she needed to eat something more than ginger crackers. She finally settled on some miso and rice to go along with her tea.
Once she had eaten she set about going through the rather intimidating stack of papers in front of her. Miroku handled as much as he could of course but there were still reports that she had to read and things only she could sign off on. She did have to admit it was nice not to be going over death reports or filling out benefit paperwork for grieving families. If nothing else she could take comfort in the fact that the truce was saving lives.
By the time she signed off on the last order and put it back in the bag her hand was aching and her vision was blurring. She rubbed her eyes and scrunched up her face as she took a drink of what was now cold tea. She poured the rest in the sink and grabbed a bottle of water before heading to the living room and curling up on the sofa. A quick look at the clock told her it had already been nearly three hours since she had spoken to InuYasha and she wondered how much longer it would be before he arrived.

Kagome stirred and wiped her cheek off with the back of her hand as something brushed against it. She heard a familiar masculine chuckle and opened her eyes to InuYasha sitting on the floor next to her.
“You keep wiping them off and I’m going to stop kissing you,” he said with a grin.
She slapped at his arm playfully and then sat up. “Have you been here long?”
“Only about ten minutes,” he replied. “You didn’t answer when I knocked so I let myself in.”
She smiled to let him know that she didn’t mind and reached out to rub one of his ears. It was then that she noticed the bag on the table. “That’s definitely not just toothpaste.”
“The toothpaste in there though and I got you some other stuff too,” he told her “I also brought dinner. I was thinking after you called that I didn’t know shit about what happens when a human woman carries a hanyou so I went to the one person who I knew I could trust that would also be able to tell me what I needed to know.”
“You really told someone about the baby?” she asked.
“Our housekeeper, Hisako, has severed our family forever,” he replied as he started to unpack the bag. “She was the one who took care of haha-ue when she carried me. We can trust her. She also made me command her not to speak of it too, just to be safe.”
Kagome slipped down onto the floor beside him and shook her head. “You don’t have to convince me. If you trust her then so do I. Wow, that smells amazing.”
“Hisako said it’s something she used to make for my mother. Apparently it took some changes to balance it for a human woman, but it’s supposed to help with the nausea,” he said. “Carrying a hanyou can be hard on a human woman because the pregnancy moves faster and her body has less time to get used to the hormonal changes. It usually passes after the first couple months, but until then this should help make sure you're getting the proper nutrition and that you can keep it down.”
He handed her a pair of chopsticks and she took a bite as he watched. She nearly groaned in pleasure. Maybe InuYasha had learned to cook from this Hisako because it was wonderful. “So good. All I’ve had today is miso, rice and some ginger crackers.”
“Guess it’s good I got the recipe for you then,” he said as he pulled out his own bento and started to eat.
“What else did you bring me?” she asked between bites.
“Keh, the toothpaste and some ginger crackers, and a special blend of tea that Hisako mixed up for you,” he said. “You’re supposed to drink a cup in the mornings. It will help keep your energy levels up.”
She leaned over and gave him a quick kiss. “Thank you for taking such good care of us. It’s like you read my mind since all of this is exactly the sort of thing I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Keh, I don’t give a shit what I have to do, Kagome, I am going to be here for you the whole way,” he told her as he ran a hand through her hair. “I may not know much about being a father or having a mate, but I know that it’s what I want more than anything.”
“Well, you are doing a really good job already as far as I’m concerned,” she said. “Did she tell you anything else?”
“Mostly just to use my nose,” he replied. “Apparently I’ll know if something is wrong, or I should. Though, she said she would be your midwife if you wanted, just come by and check on you answer any questions. If you're not comfortable…”
She set down her chopsticks and leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. He took her hand threading his fingers through hers and she smiled. “I was going to ask you if you knew anyone. I can’t really go to one of my people or a human doctor. If she took care of your mother then that’s good enough for me.”
He nuzzled the top of her head and placed a kiss in her hair. “Then we’ll work a time for her to come soon. Damn, I wish I didn’t have to go soon, but Sesshomaru really might kill me if I’m late again without a good reason, or at least one I can tell him.”
“It’s okay,” she said quietly. “I know you’d stay if you could and I know you’ll be here as often as you can and hopefully soon we won’t have to keep this a secret anymore.”
