Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha A Feudal Fairy tale, nor make any money from writing this fanfiction |
Alright, I'm back everyone! This is a short chapter; I became very frustrated with the ending for this story and decided it's just going to be longer than originally intended. I'm aiming for 19-20 chapters. My last bullet points are actually just a lot, so I need space and time to do this. I also ended up writing a InuXSess fic that's currently 30+ chapter's and I'll post that one after I finish What Lies on the Other Side. I also started The Story of the Sun God ^_^ I love that one!!!
Enjoy! Let me know what you think!
__________
“Kaede…is there really no way to change someone’s fate?” Kagome asked quietly from where she sat. Kaede continued to crush spices for a ritual.
She then paused before speaking, “The gods are fickle beings. The fate they have planned for us may not be one they like, they might change it, or we may gain the power, will, and drive to change it ourselves. This might anger the gods…but it is not impossible.”
This reminded Kagome of something her grandfather had once said to her in regards to her relationship with Inuyasha. He told her that she might be Inuyasha’s fate and he hers. To be able to travel through the well was a miracle, to be able to free him with her latent spiritual powers too, what were the chances? However, when he learned about Kikyo, his tune changed. She was now living out someone else’s fate. Kikyo should not have died 50 years ago. She should’ve been the one to free Inuyasha, she should be the one travelling with him and living the life she was living currently. It was as if when she went to the past, her soul was following a new script. “Kaede…do you think I’m living Kikyo’s fate?”
Kaede paused in her task and looked at the girl. “If…Naraku hadn’t formed…if he hadn’t killed her…wouldn’t she be the one at his side? Asking him to become human and live with her for the rest of their lives.” Kagome could feel herself wanting to cry again. All this time, she truly had been a replacement for Kikyo. She even wanted Inuyasha to live with her until the day she died, she was selfish, just like her.
“Maybe Naraku changed their fate, and maybe I came through the well to fulfill some destiny that the gods had already set…” Kagome felt like she was rambling like her grandfather now.
“It is not impossible.” Kaede spoke quietly, “Perhaps this was the only way to anchor your soul after it had already left this world and lost its fate.” She took a seat next to her and began to peel nuts. “Do you feel lost Kagome? Are you beginning to feel as though you don’t belong here?”
That was it. She didn’t belong here and she never had but she felt so comfortable. She felt like she really was just filling in Kikyo’s spot in everyone’s lives. She thought about how Inuyasha’s relationship with Sesshomaru had been stagnant before she came along. If fate was unavoidable, then they would’ve have ended up together anyway, and Sesshomaru would’ve probably stopped him from giving up his youkai…or some other adventure would have happened.
She stood with her resolve. She would leave this time period and never return. She would go back to her plain and mundane life, and hopefully, at one point or another, she’d be able to see Inuyasha again in the future. However, she would also make it up to Inuyasha for all the things she’d done. Her fate wasn’t attached to this time period, so she should be able to change things.
Heading to the forest and back to the well Kagome looked down into it. The next time she jumped through…she would make it her last. She needed to find Sango and talk to her about her plan. Lost in thought she began walking, her stroll eventually brought her back to the sacred tree, where she first met Inuyasha.
She stared up at the tree thinking about all the things they’d been through during their time together. Life really was something amazing. Looking at the sacred tree she began to speak, “Why am I here? How can I help? How can I change fate...?” She whispered. Kagome kneeled at the bottom of the tree and did something she hadn’t done in a long time. She prayed. She prayed for answers, she prayed for guidance, she prayed for help.
She took a deep breath when she felt like she was done. This tree lived for so long and knew so much, it had seen even more. She climbed to where the wound from when Inuyasha was pierced was. She sighed again and placed her finger over the hole when it felt like her entire being was snatched.
Kagome couldn’t breathe and was seeing visions. The tree was young at the time and the forest hadn’t even matured. She could see many demons fighting a little way away. There was a particular demon that looked just like Inuyasha’s father, but younger. If she was honest, all of the youkai she was seeing looked the same. They must all be shiro-inu. What was happening? She questioned, unsure if she was asking about the scenery or what the tree was doing. “Are these the memories of the tree?”
“Mama! Mama! I’m scared!” She heard a young girl cry out in the middle of the raging battle.
“These western lands are ours!” A man growled as he fought against Lord Touga.
There was a lot of shouting and the fighting went on for days, until Lord Touga was standing above a bunch of kneeling inu with his sword at his throat. “These lands belong to my clan. It matters not what claim you lay. My ancestors fought and maintained them, and have been doing so for eons while yours hid away.”
Another inu approached after the man’s head was severed. The little girl from before was crying sorrowfully in her mother’s arms. Kagome could see two more children clinging to the woman who was trying to shield them from the gruesome sight. The older girl was battered and bruised but looking at Lord Touga with a cold stare. The younger boy doing much of the same thing.
“You and yours are banished from these lands.” The older man looked down on them, “And you are to never return. So long as you live.”
The people looked terrified, and the young lord Touga looked at them with hatred filled eyes, “Should you ever return, I’ll wipe your clan from existence. Be gone. Be happy you have your lives.”
The clan was left in the bloodied field alone. Crying for their fallen comrades as they picked themselves up. The young girl was moved and taken towards the sacred tree, to get away from all of the gore. She sat by the tree, picking the flowers as her clan regrouped. She didn’t want to get in the way. She looked up at the tree with large tearful blue eyes. “I don’t understand...” She sniffled. “What did we do? Why do the other clans hate us...?” She cried quietly by the tree, “Papa...papa....” Kagome felt her heart ache for the young girl who’d watched her father be killed. She came closer and hugged the tree, sniffling harshly. “...I wish my clan could go somewhere where we’d be safe....where the other clans couldn’t find us and no one could hurt us anymore....that’s what I want...more than anything....”
The little girl seemed to go limp and fell over. “Mikarin!?” The elder girl shouted in surprise, “Mikarin!!?”
Soon the area was bathed in light and all of the inu were gone. Kagome found herself thrusted back to reality and backed away. “Was that all?” She wondered. “They just disappeared.” She mumbled in surprise. She then though about the sacred tree through the well. She ran quickly and jumped through. Coming to the sacred tree she prayed again, begging to see what had happened. Soon her prayers were answered and she was thrusted to a new scene.
“Where are we!? What has happened!?” Someone shouted in fear.
“Mikarin won’t wake up!” The elder girl cried.
The small clan was in a forest, in front of the older sacred tree. An older person walked over, “It seems as though the tree may have taken her soul and transported us here.”
“She’s dead...?” The mother fainted.
“Mother! Mother!” Her children came to her quickly, they’d already lost their father, they didn’t want to lose her too.
“She lives...but I’m afraid that without a soul she’ll pass on. This tree is sacred and connected to the gods. It granted her wish in exchange for her soul...” The elder frowned. The young girl had so much potential to be an inu sorceress.
“So, she’ll never wake up...?” Her siblings cried sorrowfully.
“I’m afraid so...”
“This is all that bastard’s fault!” The elder daughter cried angrily. “All because of some stupid ability that none of us have. All because they fear our potential!”
Please help
Kagome’s eyes widened in shock. “Hello...?” She questioned out loud.
Please help her
“Who are you!?” Kagome asked in surprise.
...please stop my sister...please...
Kagome realized she was hearing the voice of the little girl. Was her soul in the sacred tree? Was that even possible.
...mother and brother died...sister is all alone now...everyone is dying now...please help her
“Mikarin. Is your soul in the sacred tree?” Kagome was given an affirmative answer. It had been in the sacred tree for such a long time. Kagome was so surprised. From what she understood, the sacred tree took her soul in exchange for sending her family into the future, but not that far into the future as the tree looked the same as it did through the well.
We didn’t go to the future...we went to a new world...where youkai don’t exist...
This made her stomach fall. A different world? It was her world. Her world wasn’t the future? But the tree was the same....the tree was the same...right? She was so confused now. She felt something pass into her. “Mikarin?”
The girl didn’t respond, and she turned and sat on the ground. This wasn’t the future. This wasn’t what she thought, that meant she really didn’t belong there. She wanted to cry...Inuyasha was truly never meant to be hers. Going back to the well she jumped in. When she stopped that woman, she would return to her own world.

Inuyasha was sitting in the sitting room of his rooms lounging. There had been so many things going on and his room was the only place he could hide. Hikari set a drink down as he stared off into space.
“Milord...are you well?” She asked using a gentle tone.
“...What do you think I should do...?” He asked after a little while.
“I’ve always been taught to listen to my youkai.” She replied. She couldn't help him with this decision.
“But it’s selfish!” He exclaimed.
“Milord....I believe that of anyone within these walls. You deserve to be selfish the most.” She responded before going to the sitting room when she heard a knock. “Lord Inuyasha. The human monk Miroku is requesting an audience.”
Inuyasha sighed thinking about when they last saw each other. He’d really gone off the deep end.
“Let ‘im in.” Miroku soon joined him in his room.
“I’m glad to see you’re doing okay Inuyasha.” His spoke as he took a seat. There was an awkward silence as Hikari brought Miroku a drink as well.
“What’s up?”
“Are you okay?”
Inuyasha rolled his eyes and leaned back in the comfortable chair. “Yeah, yeah monk I’m fine.”
Miroku could only look around at the repaired room, thinking about the missing painting of his friend's mother. “Are you sure? You look really tired.” It wasn’t a lie, the hanyou had dark circles. He didn’t think it was possible for Inuyasha to be sleep deprived.
“I am. I’m tired of all the Naraku shit. I’m tired of people. And I’m tired of myself actually.” Inuyasha didn’t like the weight that his other self was settling on him. It was too much, and it felt like the world was slowly falling apart around him. Things used to be simple, everyone hated him, and he hated everyone in return but now his brother wanted to be his mate, people treated him like the respected prince of the West, and he didn’t have to do anything. He didn’t have to do the only thing he knew how, survive. His entire world had been turned upside down.
Miroku took a seat, happy to see that Inuyasha wasn’t showing him the type of hostility that the older had. He could only sigh in relief. “Well I would say the best part of being a prince is ignoring your problems and having other people take care of them for you.”
Inuyasha snorted. “Not when your problem is your homicidal brother wanting to be your mate.”
Miroku had known this to be the case but hadn’t realized just how far everything had progressed. “It’s reasonable to be opposed after all you’ve been through.”
Inuyasha immediately covered his face, “That’s the worse part….I’m not even fucking opposed because of that. Man, I’m fucked in the head.”
“Then what’s stopping you?” Miroku was incredibly surprised.
“I don’t want any of them to get hurt…” Inuyasha mumbled. “I don’t want to be selfish and sign them to death.”
Miroku was silent for a while before speaking, “So….you would rather they didn’t exist then?”
“No, not really. It’s better if they don’t have to suffer…” Inuyasha spoke softly as his eyes seemed to move far away.
“Better for who?” Miroku asked. Inuyasha’s eyes widened, and he looked at his friend. The monk wasn’t trying to anger nor upset his friend, however, to avoid his fate entirely because of the pain it brought was unreasonable. You could never truly be aware of the hardships you might live through. “Would you be happy? Being his mate? If you didn’t know the future, would you say yes?”
Inuyasha looked at the fire, “….yeah….” He muttered.
“Then grow a pair and solve this problem like you solve everything. I never thought I’d see you run away from a problem with your tail between your legs.” Miroku stated. If this was what his friend wanted, then he felt he should pursue it.
“Oh, fuck you!” Inuyasha growled, “It’s just that..!”
“They haven’t solved it yet. When have you ever gone down a path knowing what might happen? This is not different. You never know what actions or motions might change your fate.” Inuyasha was frozen at his friend’s words. Miroku stood and smiled at him, “I want you to do what makes you happy and worry about everything else after. There should never be a price to your own happiness. We’ve come out of worse situations alive, and this’ll be no different. I have faith in you, my friend.” Miroku had only wanted to check on his friend and wished him a good evening before returning to the rooms they’d been staying in, leaving Inuyasha to ponder his words.
What Miroku had said was the truth, he never did anything knowing the outcome. He only charged in head first and did what he needed to do to succeed. He ended up laughing to himself in his rooms by the time Hikari returned. “Am I really going to go through with this?”
Hikari was confused but said nothing when Inuyasha left his rooms for a walk. The past few days, Sesshomaru had continued to give him things and his nerves were always frayed and out of order. It was true he was quite emotional for someone who presented as stoic as he did. Inuyasha wondered why he bottled everything in so tightly. He covered his mouth thinking of all the interactions and hearing the words of others about the courting. It seems Sesshomaru was pretty proper about things. He’d even began avoiding eye contact with him, only able to withstand it for a set period of time before his nerves would get to him and he would change the subject.
The most nervous he’d been, was after many items had been delivered to Inuyasha with a letter. The letter was cringy, and Sesshomaru began to avoid him a bit as well. The older Inuyasha found it hilarious and would begin laughing whenever he happened to see them interacting.
Inuyasha ended up walking past the area where their older selves were staying. “Dad, she’s being so weird.”
“Yeah, puppy, I know.” A sullen Inuyasha responded. From what the younger Inuyasha understood, the little girl didn’t want to be held anymore and had become quiet. The elder Sesshomaru had confirmed that it was her soul beginning to separate from her body in preparation for her death. The younger Inuyasha frowned and continued to move on. He needed to solve this. He wouldn’t want to give up on one of his children, he’d be there for them even after his death.
Inuyasha continued to wander and stopped when he saw a flash of white and puppy ears in a garden. “Kiki?” The little girl sleepily turned to see him. He could see her picking the tiny white flowers and making a pile. “Come here puppy, it’s time for bed.” Inuyasha went to her and picked her up. “What’s the matter?” She whined loudly to be let go, so he sat down on a bench and set her next to him. “What’s wrong puppy?”
“Kiki is tired.”
“Yes, it’s about time for you to be asleep.” Inuyasha nodded.
She leaned on him slowly. “Kiki is sad.”
He pet her little ears, “Why is Kiki sad?”
“Because daddy is sad because of Kiki.” She frowned.
The older Inuyasha had been clinging to her quite a bit, so it wasn’t surprising that she’d picked up on that. That’s probably also why she was so fussy. “Daddy isn’t sad because of Kiki. He’s sad because he loves you a lot, y’know.”
“I love daddy too. And papa. And Nii-san. And Saisai-neesan.” Kiki nodded sleepily. “I love little daddy too, and little papa.”
Inuyasha gave her a gentle smile before asking, “What do you think about staying with little daddy and keeping him safe?” He let her lay on his thigh as she curled up.
She eyed him sleepily, “Me n' papa will keep little daddy safe…” before she finally drifted off.
Inuyasha pet her ears thinking that having a daughter would be nice. As he looked up at the moon, he thought about their other children. “We really had 4 of them…”
Young Sesshomaru who’d sensed them in the garden and was approaching, heard the comment. “We haven’t yet.”
The hanyou was surprised and turned, so as not to jostle the sleeping puppy. “Yeah…she’s so tiny.”
“As are all pups her age.” Sesshomaru took a seat next to Inuyasha as he adjusted the puppy to be in his lap completely. Inuyasha continued to pet her ears while looking up at the moon. He was surprised to feel that Sesshomaru’s nerves weren’t as bad this time. “I apologize Inuyasha.” Inuyasha turned to him in surprise. “I realize I have been placing a lot of pressure on you in a grim time. I truly don’t need an answer now.”
Inuyasha wanted to laugh. He’d already made his decision, so he thought this was funny. “Are you sure about that?”
Sesshomaru, who’d been looking at the sleeping puppy in his lap, looked up and met his eyes. “Yes. We should focus on the problem at hand and deal with what we may afterwards.”
To him, Sesshomaru seemed to have had some conviction this time. He nodded. He wanted to solve this problem and save their child as well. “Okay. I’ll give you an answer when the dust settles…”
The lord’s hand found his face, and pulled him forward, connecting their lips. “I’ll look forward to that time then.” With that, the lord stood and walked off, leaving Inuyasha blushing and stuttering. Inuyasha blushed looking down at their pup. Sesshomaru had done something the elder would have. It made him nervous…but happy.
