Chapter 179 - The Mess

A very distraught servant and a rather smug looking Inuyasha met Kagome and Inuyasha when they returned to the palace.
"Is something wrong?” Kagome asked in concern, focusing completely on the young maid who looked to be about to tear her hair out, cry, or perhaps both.
"Oh, my Lady, it's awful!" she exclaimed.
Kagome gently took the girl's hands in hers. "Just calm down a bit, and then tell me what's wrong."
The maid was surprised that the new Lady actually chose to touch her, as the previous one treated all servants not only as if they were below her, but also as if they carried some horrible communicable disease. The touch was comforting, and the young maid slowly began to calm, slowing her breathing until she was much more relaxed. This human miko was definitely special.
"Thank you, my Lady. I think I am better now. The situation is just so upsetting."
Sesshoumaru was watching the exchange between the two women with both amusement and concern. If it were he, he probably would have frightened the life out of the servant with his impatience to get to the point, but Kagome did the opposite, more concerned for the person than the problem. He knew that if it were truly an emergency of some kind, Inuyasha would have spoken up by now, so he allowed Kagome to deal with the situation in her own way.
"What's your name?" Kagome asked gently.
"I am called Junko, my Lady."
"Well then, Junko. What's the problem?"

"Oh, my Lady, it's terrible! She's ruined nearly all of the antique rugs. I have never seen such a thing."
"Who did? Did Rin already make a mess with her paints?"
"No," Inuyasha chimed in, seeing that the servant girl had no idea how to adequately describe the problem. "Your mother-in-law finally decided to shit, and she did it everywhere. I swear it looks like she walked and dropped lines of steaming, wet piles of shit. It must have gone on forever. The servants have been trying to clean up after her, but she just keeps making more. I've never seen anything like it, and the smell... I don't know how she's not passing out from the fumes of her own reek."
Kagome tried very hard to retain her composure, but the more Inuyasha continued his description, the more her lips quirked up into a smile, and eventually she was laughing. "Oh, Gods, the poor servants!"
"And my poor antique rugs," Sesshoumaru said, his tone both playful and serious at the same time.

"This is entirely my fault," the miko said remorsefully once she regained control of herself. "I guess she should have stayed in her room."
"You could not foresee what my mother would do. Do not blame yourself. She will pay for this. If she keeps up this type of behavior, she will never see her humanoid form again. She will remain as she is until the end of time."
"No, she won't. Eventually you'll have to change her back. She'll learn her lesson. It was apparently just too soon to give her more freedom. I suppose we should have expected something like this when we knew she was holding it for so long. So, what are we going to do?"
"Besides discard priceless antique rugs? I do not know. Tell me, Kagome, how are dogs punished in your time when they misbehave in this manner?"
