18. Trapped
Life gradually settled back into the routine that had been established at the household in the cave. Taking their cues from Kagome, nobody worried about the chance that the hanyou would transform again, as it was clear that she would be able to control the situation if he did. As the days progressed, she became less active, as her balance and coordination were being affected by her lowering center of gravity. Even though moving around was difficult, sleeping was nearly impossible, as becoming comfortable was out of the question.
Still, she did what she could, assisting in meal preparation, helping Rin with her sewing as she worked on things for the pup, and trying to teach herself the theory, at least, behind the crafting of storage containers of various kinds. She decided that she would plant a few different kinds of gourds next season that she would be able to make bowls and other containers from them. She would also start looking for some young willows that could be planted upstream along the river to provide material for making baskets. This, of course, would wait for spring.
The weather held relatively well into December. Although it was cold, there was little snow. The oldest of the villagers seemed to think that this hinted at a great deal of snow coming later in the season. No matter, she thought. There was plenty to do. She began spending considerable time helping Shippou and Rin with their reading. As she explained it, reading was not just a skill suited to the nobility--if someone knew how to read, they would have the ability to learn anything else they needed to know. If Rin was to become the mate of a highly-placed youkai lord, as Sesshoumaru had hinted, she would be required to keep household records, among other things. The ability to read would be an essential rather than a luxury.
Sango spent a great deal of time teaching Rin the basics of sword combat. The younger woman’s stamina and agility made her well-suited for this kind of activity, and she quickly mastered the basics. It was decided that she would be old enough for a sword of her own by spring. She did slightly less well in her instruction in fighting with what would have been called a quarterstaff in medieval Europe. Though she had grown tall, her body mass had yet to catch up to her height, and she lacked the physical strength to master the lessons taught by Miroku. Still, she learned the theory well, and hoped that she would one day be strong enough to put the theory into practice.
Other preparations for winter included the dismantling of the greenhouse to prevent it from being damaged by winter storms, and the construction of a shed to hold most of the gardening equipment. The monk took special interest in the building’s construction, insisting that it be strong enough to withstand a heavy storm.
The flea youkai, Myouga-jiichan, had been dispatched aboard Kirara one night with a message for an old friend of the hanyou’s inuyoukai father. The reply came quickly, saying that the requested things would be done as soon as possible.
On one particularly beautiful December morning, Inuyasha had been dispatched through the well to take a number of things through as Christmas gifts for Kagome’s family. Although there were no shopping malls in her world, she had spent a great deal of time and effort on making choices that she hoped would be good ones. For her grandfather, she chose several scrolls of history and incantations she copied from Kaede’s extensive records. Her mother would receive a silk kimono in a bright blue decorated with yellow sunflowers, a plant that for some reason had always reminded Kagome of her remaining parent. Her little brother Souta was the problem. As was true of most boys his age, his universe revolved around mangas and video games. It took a little time, but Kagome painstakingly copied out some of the more interesting legends of the area for him to read. She also sent along a bow sized to fit his child’s body--she had always thought that he could do with a little more fresh air and exercise.
He returned laden with packages for Kagome and the rest of the strange little family, including several for the pup. Cursing fluently as he hauled the stuff through the woods in the direction of home, he found himself surprised when the monk met him partway home. Gladly giving up part of his burden, he asked how things were back at the cave.
Miroku shook his head. “Everything’s fine, Inuyasha. Kagome-sama’s missed you.”
He was grateful for the help with the packages, although the presence of the monk slowed his progress considerably. Moving as quickly as he could while hampered by a much slower human companion, he passed through the forest like a shadow. They were still twenty minutes from their destination when his sensitive ears picked up a faint cry in the distance. “What the hell was that?”
The monk had heard nothing, but had a pretty good idea about what it might have been. “I didn’t hear anything.”
Not to be stalled any longer, the hanyou leaped ahead. “Follow as fast as you can. There’s something wrong at home!”
Pushing through the curtain into the large main room of his home, the hanyou looked at Sango and Rin, who were preparing tea by the fire. “Where’s Kagome?” he demanded.
Sango had traveled to neighboring villages on exactly this kind of errand a number of times, and was used to the bizarre reactions of men under these conditions. “She’s lying down, resting. She’s perfectly fine. What are you doing back so soon? And where’s houshi-sama?”
Sniffing the air in the chamber, he could pick up his mate’s unique scent, although there was an edge of sweat and worry to it. He also detected another scent reminiscent of medicines and age. He dropped the packages on the table and pushed his way through the reed curtain to their bedchamber. The room was brightly lit with extra lamps and candles, and the old miko sat at his mate’s bedside with a bowl of cool water she used to occasionally sponge the sweat from the younger woman’s face.
“What the hell’s going on here?”
His mate’s eyes opened, and he didn’t much like what he saw in them. She was tired, and in pain, and irritated, and worried. “What does it look like, baka? It’s ti--” Her muscles tightened up, and she tried to breathe in shallow pants like the books all said, but they came out as more of a groan than anything else.
“Dammit, Babaa, can’t you do anything for her? Look at her--she’s in pain!” The hanyou looked about ready to tear the old woman to shreds if he didn’t like that answer.
The old miko shook her head. “There’s nothing to be done. Any medicine strong enough to dull the pain would slow or stop the labor. They could even damage the little one. This,” she said in a smug tone she reserved for panicked fathers-to-be, “Is why we don’t allow the men around at times like this. Miroku!”
The monk burst through the curtain, panting from having run all the way from where he had been left behind in the forest. Taking in the scene with a glance, he reached into his robes and extracted a sealing charm that he had prepared for just this eventuality. Muttering the incantation that would activate the spell, he slapped the charm across the hanyou’s back, effectively immobilizing him.
Dragging the impotently raging hanyou from the room by the back of his haori, he nodded pleasantly to the two women. They had put a lot of thought into this plan, and he was certain that it would work, although he wasn’t sure how long it would take Inuyasha to forgive them after it was all over. Still dragging the cursing form behind him, he headed outside, asking Sango and Rin to bring some tea out to the storage shed.
Heaving his burden into the small building, he waited until the tea was delivered before placing a ward on the only door and removing the seal from the hanyou’s back. “Well, now I know why Kaede-sama insisted on these precautions. Listen to me,” he said, watching calmly Inuyasha stormed around the interior of the small building, “This is as much for Kagome-sama’s good as for your own. This is a difficult thing she’s doing, and you were only making it harder for her. Now,” he continued, “You can either sit down and have some tea with me, or you can continue to behave like a caged animal. Either way, there’s nothing you can do to hurry things along. Besides,” he added, “If you kill me, you’ll have to wait for Kaede-sama to come out here and release the wards so you can get out.”
The hanyou opened his mouth to deliver a blistering curse, but stopped dead at the sound of an agonized shriek coming from somewhere outside the shed. In that moment, all of the fire seemed to go out of him, and he slumped against the wall of the structure and stared, unseeing, at the floor between his feet. “What the hell did I do to her,” he whispered.
The monk had also heard the sound, although nowhere near as clearly as the other. To him, it sounded a great deal like progress. “You, my friend,” he said, resting a hand on Inuyasha’s shoulder, “Only did what lovers have been doing since the world began. By the time a day or two passes, Kagome-sama will have forgotten all about the pain. You, however, should remember it, if only as a reminder of how deeply your mate loves you.”
“I swore never to hurt her again.”
“Believe it or not,” Miroku said, “She’ll think of this day as one of the highlights of her life.”
Too numbed by the sounds coming from the cave to think clearly, the hanyou swore to himself never again to touch his mate while she was in heat--assuming, of course, that she ever wanted to have anything to do with him again.
It was nearly two hours before a different kind of scream, this one starting as a deep groan and escalating to a high, wavering shriek came to their ears, followed almost immediately by another. He would never forget the sound of those screams as long as he lived. He held his aching head in both clawed hands, thinking only that those must surely be the kind of screams made by the damned in the torments of hell itself.
Only a few minutes later, the door of the shed opened to reveal Rin. “Kaede-sama says you can come out now.”
