18. Home at Last
His worries about our future at least temporarily laid to rest, we made our farewells to my family in Tokyo and returned to the world I hadn’t seen in over a month. I wasn’t especially surprised to see the two tiny figures perched on the rim of the well when we came through. Fortunately, Shippou waited until we had completely emerged from the time portal and set down our packages before leaping at me.
This time, though, he never reached his destination. In a move almost faster than I could see, my hanyou mate plucked the little kitsune from the air, leaving him suspended at eye level by his bushy tail. “Oi, kid, don’t jump on her like that.”
The kit was more than a little irritated by the treatment. “Why not?!?” he demanded.
I took him from Inuyasha’s grasp and held him to me for a few seconds before replacing him on the edge of the well. “We’ll tell you all about it later, when we’re all together. Now,” I continued, “Where are the others?”
Looking as though he had suddenly remembered something, he hopped down from the edge of the well and headed into the forest. “Follow me,” he said.
Although the midsummer afternoon was oppressively humid in the meadow where the well was, it was pleasantly cool under the forest canopy. With the help of Shippou and Kirara, we could manage to carry everything we had brought from my world. I glanced at my mate for an explanation, but his expression was clearly as puzzled as my own.
Fortunately, we would not have long to wait.
We headed into the forest in the general direction of the hot spring I used whenever I could spare the time. Maybe the others had decided that we would all need a long, hot soak after all the time we had just spent in my world. The more I thought about it, the better it sounded, and I pushed through the screening underbrush with enthusiasm.
And stopped dead in my tracks, my mate bumping into me from behind.
The structure was large--almost a palace by village standards. A wide porch extended around the outside of the building. Not only would this provide whoever lived here with a comfortable place to spend summer afternoons, but it would also prevent rain or snow from entering the large open windows all around the structure except in the most violent of storms. The doorway and windows were covered by reed mats that could be rolled up out of the way.
I shook my head in confusion at my friends. “What are we doing here? Who lives here?”
Miroku smiled, his arm around the waist of the woman who had finally consented to be his wife once they were both free to do so. “Actually,” he said, “You do.”
The youkai taijiya broke away from his embrace as she saw my utterly shocked expression. “Come on,” she said. “Let me give you the tour.”
My initial estimation was correct: by the standards of this time and place, the house was huge. The first room inside the doorway was the general type of main room that was found in all the surrounding homes: a couple of tables for food preparation and other work, a fire pit in the approximate center--already laid with wood for a fire, I noticed--and four reed mats hanging on the walls to indicate where other rooms were located: one on each side, and two to the rear.
Miroku shrugged in explanation. “I don’t know how things are in your world, but here it is a man’s responsibility to provide a home and food for his mate. When we learned that you would be staying in your world for an extended period of time--and that you would be married when you returned--we took it upon ourselves to…alter the instructions we had been given.”
Sango nodded, smiling broadly. “That’s right. Inuyasha wanted us to find an abandoned hut that you two could fix up and live in. Anyway, we talked to Kaede about it, and she talked to the rest of the village, and--this happened.”
I could hardly believe what I was hearing. “You did all this--for us?” My knees felt suddenly weak, and strong arms went around my waist, half holding me upright.
Miroku was grinning like an idiot. “Think about it. Since you broke his seal, the two of you have protected this village from every danger that has come along. When the word got out that you were getting married, they wanted to do everything in their power to make sure that you stayed here and continued that protection.”
Shippou gestured at the large futon rolled up in a corner of the room. “We weren’t sure what room you would like to sleep in, so we just left the futon over there.”
Realizing that we were still somewhat in shock the others left, saying that they would return the following morning for all the details of what had gone on back in my world. The random thought that they would never hear a lot of the story flashed through my mind before I was startled out of my daze by soft lips on the back of my neck.
Turning in his loose grasp, I laid a hand along his smooth cheek, feeling him lean into my touch just the slightest bit. Realizing that he looked even more dazed than I felt, I asked, “What’s wrong?”
His voice was hoarse with some emotion I couldn’t identify. “The village. They did this. For us. But I’m just--”
I stopped him from speaking further with a finger placed across his lips. “You’re not ‘just’ anything, love. You’re strong, honest, loyal, and you honor your commitments. That’s just as rare here as it is in my time.” I looked up to see the shock fading from his gaze. “I don’t think we have to worry about trouble from the villagers. They appreciate you, just not in exactly the same way that I do.”
I could see that he still had reservations, but he kept them to himself. He looked at me critically, then said, “You look a little tired. Why don’t we stash this stuff and go soak in the spring for a while?”
I shook my head. “Not yet. I think we better decide where we’re going to sleep first. Once I get out of the water, I’m not going to feel like doing much of anything but sleeping.”
As soon as we saw the room, we knew that we had found the right one. Unusually large, it was located closest to the nearby hot spring. The west-facing windows would provide good ventilation while keeping the early morning sun out of our eyes and protecting us from the summer heat.
Laying out the futon, we stored the bulk of our things in the adjacent room for the present. Though the house was essentially unfurnished, we could take care of that over a period of time, trading with the residents of our village and a few others that were close by for things that we would need.
Trembling a little from the stresses of the day, I joined my mate in the hot spring behind our new home.
