Author's Note: Sorry for the review demand! Didn't mean to fight the TOS. Just looking for some input :D Chapter 18 – It’s Hard to Dance with the Devil on Your Back Kagome sat in her room brushing out her hair before heading to bed. It had been a day of adventures for sure. After returning to their former selves both Kagome and Inuyasha’s bodies began their advanced healing. The bruise on her cheek was still clear, but she hoped it would be gone by tomorrow or at least buffered by concealer. You should not abuse this body the way you do. Kagome chuckled, “Oh Tsuki, could you actually be concerned about me?” It is my host body as well. I’m not weak, so why do I look like a victim? “Well, I’m sorry, but there were three demons.” Kagome looked down at her hands, palms up. Just how had she been able to recall her magical powers without the aid of Lady Kanade? “Hey, Tsuki?” What? “I am going to visit Lady Kanade tomorrow. I need to find out what is going on with these powers.” Disgusting holy powers. “Yeah well, those disgusting powers saved my life today and yours. I don’t understand why they only appear once in a blue moon. The first time they showed up you were in control, it wasn’t even me.” This is false. You regained possession of the body and blasted that man. “A man I had no idea who he was!” Kagome put down her brush with a huff. “You still to this day haven’t told me who he is.” It’s not any of your concern. Kagome threw up her hands in a huff and threw herself back on her bed with a sigh, “Fine. I’m sorry I got beaten up and was a stupid weak human.” She threw the covers over her head, still looking up at what would be the ceiling, in the darkness. At least you didn’t die. So that’s good… - - - - - -- The following morning Kagome stood in the kitchen with a cup of coffee in her hands. There were a few things she needed to do today and tonight was the dinner with Rin’s Lord person. She scratched her head and sighed just as Inuyasha wandered out of his room with a loud yawn. “Good morning to you too, Inuyasha,” Kagome chuckled, picking up a freshly brewed cup of coffee off the counter and handed it to him. Inuyasha grumbled and took the cup of coffee, muttering thanks. “I’m going to head to Lady Kanade’s for a little bit, alright?” Kagome asked him; despite knowing he was half asleep. Sometimes it made Kagome feel manipulative because she could always get what she wanted when he was tired. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do whatever,” he grumbled, gulping at the coffee as he slumped onto a barstool at the table. Kagome slid a plate of toast and two sunny-side up eggs. Leaning over, from a certain angle, revealing just a tiny instance of her scar, and ruffled his hair. “Call me, yeah? I’ll be on the run all day.” She scampered to the door and slid on her shoes, “But hey, I need to finish that picture of you. Let me know when you’re free! Bye!” Her tiny hands bat on Sango’s door before pushing it open, still having the key to her old place, “Hey, are you home in here Sango?” Sango peaked her head out from the bathroom, holding a towel up to her chest. “Hey you, what’s up?” Kagome laughed and threw herself onto the sofa and smiled. “Get changed, get changed. I just stopped in to say hi.” Sango smiled, “Just give me a second. I need to head to the grocery store. Where are you all dressed up to head to?” “To see Lady Kanade,” Kagome called, listening to Sango rush around her room getting ready. Her eyes drifted to the ceiling and then closed, “Don’t be mad okay, but my powers woke up again.” Sango poked her head out of her room as she threw on a blue t-shirt, “What do you mean? Did something happen?” “I was harassed yesterday by a couple of demons,” Kagome sighed, covering her eyes. “I was a human yesterday because of this once a month new moon demon thing Inuyasha was trying to explain to me.” “You were a human?” “I’m not a human anymore, not like one hundred percent human. So it’s like a one day a month thing where there’s no demon with me,” Kagome sighed waving her hands in the air, “But because I’m a priestess it happens even less often and is harder to deal with. So I went out with Inuyasha to---“ “You went out with Inuyasha? Was it a date?” Kagome let out a loud growl, “Sango, we were both human and bummed out. Three demons harassed me and somehow my powers came out. I somehow had a knife made of holy energy in my hand.” “Did you get hurt? What happened to them?” “I’m fine. Tsuki is mad at me and I think Inuyasha was too, since he tried to protect me,” Kagome added, sitting up on the couch as Sango emerged fully dressed. “We are all fine, I promise. But I need to talk to Lady Kanade to find out what happened.” Her best friend put her hands on her hips and sighed, “You are such a complicated girl.” She held out her hand for Kagome to grab, “You better be grateful I’m so patient with you.” Kagome stuck out her tongue as she grabbed her friend’s hand and jumped up, “Yeah yeah. Lets go to the grocery store together, okay?” Kagome squeezed Sango’s hand and smiled, “What do you need from the store?” “Now that I’m shopping for one, just a few frozen meals.” “Sango, just cause Miroku’s gone does not mean you get to get fat and slack off,” Kagome teased, bumping her hip and wrapped her arm around her friend, “By the way, I am 1000% kidding.” Sango chuckled, “Well, I don’t want to fill the fridge too much since I’ll be leaving soon.” “You’re leaving?” Kagome faked gasped, pretending to prepare to weep, “Why must you abandon me?” “Can’t you be happy I’m off to see my boyfriend?” Kagome stopped walking down the hallway and turned back to Sango with a grin. “No way, are you really?” Sango clapped her hands together and jumped up and down, “He surprised me yesterday with them in the mail. He made me open them over Skype so he could watch. It’s a two week trip.” Kagome launched herself into her friend’s arms and hugged her, “I’m so happy for you! I knew he’d surprise you sooner or later.” “He keeps complaining that you never call him. Could you get on that? If I have to hear him say your name one more time I’m gonna come slap you silly.” “Okay, I hear you. I will calm him today after I meet with Lady Kanade,” she chirped, holding onto her friend and pulling her to the staircase. “Lets go buy those meals for you.” The two were quick to exit the apartment and head over to a local convenient store. Kagome held the basket and Sango looked up and down the isles. Sango looked at the nutritional information on the back of a box, “So what are you doing besides seeing Lady Kanade today?” “I have that engagement with Rin-chan’s….Lord…person,” Kagome sighed, biting into an apple she’d have to pay for at checkout. “I don’t even know this guy’s name.” “Seems a little full of himself, doesn’t he?” she mumbled, flipping over the box again. “I guess so, maybe he’ll give me riches and jewels for saving her,” Kagome chuckled, looking down at her phone clicking through a text message. “So are you going to be back in time for my opening?” Sango tossed the frozen meal into Kagome’s basket and smiled, “Of course I will. I get back two days before the exhibition. It’s the first week of August, right?” “Right. I have to have someone I know there or I’m going to freak out,” Kagome sighed, looking down at her phone. “I haven’t asked him yet, you know…” Sango looked up from her food, “Inuyasha? Why? This shouldn’t be a big deal. This is a…” she changes her voice, “I have tickets. We live together. Come to this gallery opening. For free. There’s even free food and wine.” Kagome laughed and rubbed the back of her head, “I guess so.” “Kagome, why are you hesitating?” Sango looked at her friend, “Do you really think Kikyo would come to your gallery to start a fight?” “I think she’d come as his date.” “And you hate this why?” Kagome ruffled the back of her head, “I don’t trust her to be real with me. You know, the fake cordial stuff?” Sango pushed Kagome’s shoulder and sighed, “Get over it. Besides, I thought you said you hadn’t seen her around your house in a while.” “Yeah yeah, fine, but if she shows up, we’re throwing her out.” Kagome looked at her phone and sighed, “Okay, I need to head out or I’m going to be late. Can you handle groceries without me?” “Go ahead. Just tape the tickets onto the fridge like I said the first time.” Sango waved her hand over her shoulder. - - - - - - - Lady Kanade opened the door to her place and smiled, “Welcome, Lady Kagome.” Kagome smiled while bouncing back and forth on her heels, “Sorry it’s been a while.” “Not at all my dear, it’s nice to see you outside of the training.” Kanade stepped aside and ushered her in. But once she made it through the door Kanade stopped her and touched Kagome’s cheek, “Seems your makeup could not cover your wound. That’s why you came to see me, right?” Kagome nodded, “Yes. A lot of strange things are going on recently.” “Well come, tell me of these things over a nice glass of tea.” Kagome folded her knees under her at the table and folded her hands around the cup of coffee. Looking down at the cup, Kagome let out a sigh, “That’s basically what happened.” Lady Kanade lifted the cup to her lips. After a sip she put the cup down and smiled, “I’m happy to see your powers are developing.” “But…” Kagome swished around the contents of her tea, “Why does it only work at random times, still, Lady Kanade?” “Well, do you recall anything about yesterday that helped you create your weapons? Creating weapons is very uncommon in the power of the priestesses. Instead, a priestess can usually channel her powers into a physical object.” Kagome closed her eyes, “I wanted to protect him.” “Him? Do you mean, Inuyasha-san?” “Yes, he was being attacked by those men,” Kagome explained slowly, clearing her throat. “Um, I just remember three words….concentrate, conceive, create.” Lady Kanade smiled and touched Kagome’s hand, “A mechanism. That’s a great way to help focus your powers.” “Focus?” “Yes,” Lady Kanade nodded and finished her tea. “Why don’t you stand up and demonstrate to me.” “Demonstrate?” Kagome struggled to keep her cup from falling over. Lady Kanade nodded and gestured her up. Brushing off her knees she stood and backed up to the back wall of the room. Kagome looked down at her hands and breathed out. Concentrate… Kagome held up a hand in front of her face and exhaled. Conceive… Pink light shot from her hand and began to form in her hand. Kagome swallowed and tried to think back to the panic she felt yesterday a knife formed in her hand. Just as a knife formed Kagome let out a loud scream. The knife in her hand began to spark in her hand and then slowly burn her skin. Kagome fell back against the wall and screamed as her hand began to bleed. Lady Kanade jumped up and ran towards Kagome and grabbed at her hand. “Calm down, Kagome!” Kagome’s eyes bled red as a clawed hand reached out for Kanade, “Digusting human. Make this burn stop!” Lady Kanade smiled and pulled the powers from Kagome’s hand, “I apologize, lady demon. It is not my intention to harm you, demon.” “This blood is vial. It is disgusting,” Kagome hissed and pulled her hand back once the powers had vanished. Her eyes continued to bleed red even though the power was gone. But Kagome had managed to regain possession. She held up her hand, black and bubbling, “What…what’s happening?” Lady Kanade smiled weakly and pushed a bang behind Kagome’s ear, “Your demon blood rejected the holy blood. I am truly sorry. Stay here.” Lady Kanade disappeared behind a wall and reappeared a few minutes later with a vial. “This is holy water, it will stop the spreads of the burn.” Kagome let out a whine of pain as the holy water scorched out the bubbling black. She bit back tears and closed her eyes, “Am I ever going to be normal inside this body? The farther I get with one side the more I hurt the other.” “Oh my child, you must not think this way. This realization is the key to your powers,” Kanade cooed, running her hand over Kagome’s forehead. “Now you know how to call upon the powers at any time. But what we must master now is how to separate the two of you.” - - - - - - - - It was evening now and Kagome stood in front of a large building. She tugged at the sides of her dress and then looked at the piece of paper with Rin-chan’s address on it. It was just a quarter to her time and fidgeted nervously. The doorman was tall with silver buttons. He could sense that Kagome was nervous and turned to her slowly. He pulled out his pocket watch; hands clothed in white gloves, and smiled, “You’re right on time, Miss Higurashi.” Kagome jumped and rubbed the back of her head, “Oh! Thanks. Um, how did---“ “The Lord informed me of the engagement tonight.” He put the watch away and smiled. “I really must thank you for saving the young woman.” Kagome laughed weakly, “Everyone thanks me for something I did without thinking. It was just an impulse.” The doorman smiles and opens the door for Kagome, “Impulse or not, the fact that I can see this young girl smile is still a pleasure.” Kagome entered into the foyer of the house and was immediately approached by a woman in a red apron. Before she could even complain or protest the woman pealed off Kagome’s coat and tucked it under her arm. “That’ll be all, Ma’m.” The woman curtsied and scurried away. Pathetic demon maid. Kagome gulped and looked at the floor. “You could sense that? She looked just like a human.” Your human eyes are weak, you did not notice the tail or ears on that one? Kagome looked down the hall where the girl disappeared down. “You’re here!” She whipped her head around to see a young Rin, dressed in the finest of dresses, running right towards her. - - - - - - - - - Inuyasha opened the door his apartment to leave to almost bump right into Kikyo. “Kikyo, what are you…” “We have not talked in days.” Kikyo huffed and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and sighed, trying to hide the absolute faintest of blush on her cheeks. “I wanted to see you.” Inuyasha rubbed the back of his head and back peddled into his house, opening the door for her, “Uh, I guess you can…come in.” Her heels clicked against the floor as she scurried in, finding a seat at the island while Inuyasha looked around for two clean wine glasses. “Aren’t you supposed to be at work or something?” “I do get time off, Inuysaha.” “Yea, and before I never got to see you anyway,” Inuyasha grumbled, slowly pouring a white wine into a cup. “You thought I’d come back before you would have to come to me. So now here you are.” “That’s very cruel of you, Inuysaha,” she grumbled, taking the cup from him and sipping it. “It’s been almost a week.” “Yeah…” Inuyasha gulped his drink and looked at the clock. He hadn’t heard from Kagome all day and right now wished he didn’t have to deal with this. “What have you been doing?” “I’ve been working on the finalizations of the move to America,” Kikyo sipped on her wine. “The demon based healing strands are almost complete for artificial replication.” “That means what?” “What this means is eventually the healing properties of demons will be completely accessible to the human population.” Inuyasha frowned and put down his empty cup, “So you’re really going through with this transfer.” “Inuyasha, this project is almost near completion. This has been well over five years of my life.” Kikyo put her cup down and poured herself another glass, “When I relocate it will be for the last time.” “Last time?” Kikyo nodded, “Once the project is complete I am going to be stationed in the state of my choosing in the United States. They guarantee I will never have to move for a project ever again. I will of course be allowed to move whether it’s for promotions or a need for change, but there will be no more uprooting.” Inuyasha gulped on his wine and smiled, “Well, that’s a great thing, right? You can finally put down some roots.” “Yes, and finally start a family.” - - - - - - - - - Rin had spent the last hour pulling Kagome through the various rooms of the apartment building mansion she was inside. The small green kappa frog scurried behind the two ladies trying so hard to keep the mess contained. “And this is Rin-chan’s room.” Rin squeaked, revealing a room top to bottom with fabulous toys and bright colors. Kagome smiled, “This room is amazing, Rin-chan. Where did you get all of these wonderful toys?” “Lord Sesshomaru gave them to me! When Rin-chan is good she gets a reward. Like good grades!” Kagome ruffled her eyebrow, “Lord…Sesshomaru?” “Indeed, I am Lord Sesshomaru.” Kagome whipped around in the room and found herself face to face with a tall white-haired demon with gold eyes. She couldn’t get much more before she felt Tsuki surge her way to the command of the body. Tsuki? Tsuki smirked and rest her hand on her hip, “We meet again, Lord.” “Hn, indeed, you have returned,” Sesshomaru smirked. The little feisty girl he had met at the museum all those weeks ago now smirked back up at him. She wore a simple blue dress halfway up the thigh, the top a turtleneck with no sleeves. “This body seems to have healed.” Tsuki growled and upturned a fang at him, “I believe the last time we met was at the graveyard when Kagome visited her brother.” “Ah, you let the human have a name?” Sesshomaru smirked, turning around to pick up a glass of wine from the maid behind him. “Have the two of you grown close?” “I fail to see the interest you’d have in the little human when I stand right before you. Or perhaps you prefer something weaker? A little bit more of a plaything?” Sesshomaru chuckled and ran his hand along her cheekbone. He noted the faintest purple of her cheek and frowned. “You must still be rather weak, to let such a mark befall your face.” “Blame the inferiorities of this relationship, for the new moon kept me quiet all of yesterday.” “Ah, but at least you appear before me with beauty rest.” Kagome behind Tsuki’s eyes studied Lord Sesshomaru. For whatever reason, the man seemed extremely familiar to Kagome. As the conversation transpired between the two demons Kagome realized this was a man that she had shot with her powers that day. She gulped and continued to listen, unable to even sway Tsuki, so she remained quiet. Tsuki pushed a strand of hair behind her ear and as she finished Lord Sesshomaru grabbed her at the wrist. “What happened to you?” Tsuki looked at the hand, now thoroughly wrapped in white bandages with the faintest pinks at the center. Pulling her wrist free she cuffed her hand to her chest. “An accident.” “Do you know nothing of how to take care of yourself?” Tsuki snarled and pivoted back on her feet, “Do not dare to speak down to me.” “You have such authority to say this to me? I am a full demon. You are not even half.” She sipped at her wine and sighed, “I will heal. This wound particular will take longer, that is all.” “Longer?” Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow, intrigued, as he glanced back into the room to see Rin-chan combing the hair of one of his dolls. Tsuki dodged the question and leaned around Sesshomaru to look at Rin. “Odd to find a pure blood demon with a human ward.” “She is special.” “As am I, so try not to test my patience with demeaning questions.” Tsuki handed her empty glass to him and smirked, “I am the one who saved your little ward. Perhaps you should treat the guest with a touch more kindness?” Sesshomaru smiled and held out his hand to her, “I apologize. I must thank you for saving my ward. She told me you were accosted by the public for your appearance.” “Indeed, it seems these humans are still not kind with the changes individuals endure,” she placed her hand in his. He closed his hand over her bandaged hand and escorted her to the dining area, “And this wound?” “A holy burn.” Sesshomaru, though his face cold and expressionless, seemed for a moment shocked in his eyes. “You endure a holy burn of this magnitude?” “Call it self-inflicted; the girl knows not what she’s doing. She’s just a human. And young.” “Hn.” “Why not strike a deal with me?” Sesshomaru opened the door to the dining room and looked down at her, “A deal?” “An exchange. I saved the girl’s life, you save mine. Give me the relic that will separate me from Kagome.” Author’s Note: Florence and the Machine “Shake it Out”
