Chapter 17
(A/N: Thank you everyone who reviewed, especially those who ask questions and/or give suggestions! It kicks my muse into high gear.
To give perspective, this entire story so far has taken place between episodes 71-73, after the three part episode where Naraku releases and reabsorbs Muso and before Inuyasha acquires the red Tessaiga to break Naraku's barrier. I will begin progressing through the episodes later, and will clearly explain this at the time as well as briefly summarizing essential parts but not completely writing out each episode since that gets repetitive.)
Kagome had just finished getting dressed when she heard an insect-like buzzing. Looking over towards Naraku revealed the source, a Siamyosho buzzed a message to him that she couldn't understand. She briefly noted he was completely dressed now too and wondered how he managed it so quickly. Her thoughts were dismissed when he spoke, "It is time to leave."
Two feelings swelled up, a longing to stay and a fear of getting caught if she did. She nodded her understanding and shouldered her bag, "When will I see you again?"
"Sooner than you'd expect," he responded, earning a smile from the girl before she turned and started along the path. He stared off in the direction she vanished in for a long while, letting his mind wander into whatever tangent that presented itself. 'There is a reason I let her return,' he reminded himself. 'Gain her trust, use her to get information or complete tasks, have her betray her friends, and when I'm the only thing she has left, crush her heart and end her life.' That last thought didn't sit well though. 'Perhaps, I will keep her, have her available for whenever I desire her body.' That sounded better. 'I will destroy all those she could possibly leave me for. History will not repeat itself this time. She will be my possession to do with as I please, but before that can happen, I must acquire more demonic power.' His face contorted into a scowl at the memory of her purity neutralizing his seed. 'That will have to be remedied, for a demon child would have to be unbelievably strong to survive the harsh, purity saturated environment of a priestess's womb, should I ever chose to pup her.' Catching the disturbing direction his thoughts were heading, he refocused on the world around him. He had plans to finalize, but would linger until Inuyasha had moved out of scent range; he needed to keep his barrier up until then lest the dog discover this potent scene. As amusing as his outrage and pain would be, it was too soon for such a reveal.
Twigs crunched under Kagome's hurried steps as she headed for the village. Naraku had explained that she needed to arrive before her companions awoke and just before Inuyasha returned, and had timed her departure precisely for that outcome. She couldn't help but worry, however, and moved as fast as she could given the weight of her bag and stray branches crossing the path. She was only temporarily surprised when she found the edge to his barrier, not realizing he had one erected, but it making perfect sense. The fluid ease in which she was able to pass through it was refreshing. Stepping through, she felt his aura pulse around her, a comforting sensation that reminded her of their night together. She smiled to herself at the treasured, but forbidden, memory. If anyone found out, she would be shamed, labeled a traitor, and because of that, would do almost anything to keep it a secret. Even so, the opinions of others were not even resonating within her own conscience; she couldn't bring herself to feel even the slightest bit of guilt for her actions. Naraku was the 'enemy,' but why was he the enemy? Because the first people she met pointed him out and told her so. Simply between Naraku and herself, she threw the first blow, the arrow that destroyed his body. Prior to that incident, he had never targeted her directly. He must have only been trying to defend himself from a new threat when he sent Kohaku after her. It was miraculous to fathom that they somehow went from enemies to... lovers? Oh and what a lover he was; just as formidable in 'bed' as he was on the battlefield. 'But, how long will he want me, I wonder?' She realized morosely that when he does tire of her, it would hurt immensely to feel that rejection. 'I just want to make him happy, even if all he wants from me is a temporary, physical relationship.' That proved it to herself, she was falling for him despite efforts not to. What else could it be if his happiness was becoming more important than her own. 'I should have known I wouldn't be able to remain detached,' she chided herself.
Moving mechanically, her mind in a haze from her thoughts, she found herself right outside the lodgings Miroku had bartered for. She walked softly, careful not to wake anyone, padding down the hall and wincing with every creak of the floorboards. Inching the door to her and Sango's room open, she tiptoed over to the wall and gently set her bag down and sat next to it. Letting out a relieved sigh at having made it in time, she closed her eyes and let some of the stress melt away.
No sooner than she had, loud, thumping steps could be heard pounding down the hall. A nearby door was roughly opened and Inuyasha's demanding voice was easily identified, "Hey, wake up you lazy monk, we need to get moving." In his mind, if he got them moving quickly, they wouldn't have time to question where he was last night.
Miroku groaned at the rude awakening but sat up, noticing it was barely even light out. "Why the rush?" he responded slowly, still in a fog from sleep.
"Keh, cuz we need to find the jewel shards," Inuyasha scoffed. "Why else?"
The commotion roused Sango, Kirara, and Shippo too, all rubbing the early morning sleep from their eyes.
"He's at it again," Shippo complained.
"Doesn't he ever slow down?" Sango mirrored the sentiment.
Kagome's mind was working overtime from the second she heard Inuyasha. Sure she made it back in time, but what if specific incriminating details were mentioned.
"Good morning, Kagome," Sango greeted, then turned beat red as she remembered what she saw last night. After returning from checking on her friends, Miroku would not quit pestering her about their welfare. She couldn't say anything, just told him not to worry with the fiercest blush and ducked into her room to get away.
"Uhh, morning, Sango," Kagome was failing to hide her nervousness. "Did you sleep well?"
"Yeah, I guess," Sango responded, but was thinking, 'Did you? Or did you even sleep at all?' Not that she'd ever say it out loud though.
"Are you girls up yet?" Inuyasha bellowed from the other side of the door. Kagome went rigid, if Sango caught the incriminating phase, oh no. She was supposedly with Inuyasha last night, yet his words hinted that she was asleep here.
"We're working on it already," Sango retorted. "Go chase your tail or something."
"I don't have a tail," he snapped back, completely missing the dog-related jibe.
Kagome giggled at Sango's joke, relieved her friend was still too tired to put the pieces together, 'That was a close one.'
"Well, we better get moving before your pet comes barking again," Sango addressed Kagome, who although still nervous, smiled back.
"Hey, I heard that," Inuyasha's voice echoed from further away making both girls laugh.
Once they got outside, Kagome was doing her best to appear calm, but couldn't bring herself to so much as look at Inuyasha, for fear that eye contact would suddenly make her tryst known. He couldn't look at her either, for much the same reason. This did not go unnoticed my Miroku and Sango, as they drew their own conclusions.
'Could it be that Inuyasha and Kagome had a more intimate moment last night?' Miroku wondered. 'By the way they are acting and Sango's intense embarrassment and avoidance last night, that certainly seems to be the case.'
Just as the sun peaked over the trees, Kagome finally began to relax. She remembered something Naraku said when she was stressing over if her friends would find out or not, "The tangled webs weaved of ones own assumptions surpass all possible lies, for one will always believe themselves above the stories of others." He was right, she smiled to herself, comfortable in her own skin once again. The adrenaline rush of the night and getting resituated with her friends was dying down, causing the avalanche of fatigue to hit. 'This is going to be a long day,' she realized. Not to mention, she was still a little sore. 'A very long day.'
The path ahead rippled with the intensity of the evening heat, a blurred red form danced evasively in her vision, getting further and further away. Every step towards the figure caused her legs to ache more and more, the effort required to catch up no longer worth it. 'So this is what it feels like to be sleep deprived and achy all over from a horny demon's lust,' Kagome begrudgingly pondered. 'Is it really worth it to see you again, Naraku, if this is how I end up?' Satire kept her sane in this moment. 'Or is this your new tactic to try and kill me?' At least this brought a smile to her exhausted expression. 'I wonder when I'll see you again, you did tell me it'd be soon.' Her steps faltered and she stumbled a bit, barely catching her balance. Before she could even take another step, Inuyasha had leapt directly in front of her, eyeing her suspiciously.
"What's going on, Kagome?" he asked, staring her straight in the eye. If she looked away now he'd get suspicious. At her lack of response and dumbfounded look, he elaborated, "You're not normally this weak."
She huffed at him, renewed vigor showing as her hands anchored to her hips, "I'm tired okay," she glared, "I didn't sleep well last night." Inuyasha startled back, suddenly wary of her temper, fearing she was mad over him going to go see Kikyo, and that being the reason she didn't sleep well. The others drew another conclusion.
Not wanting to anger her, he acquiesced, "Get on then." He turned and crouched down for her to climb on, deciding this would be easier than being sat. Kagome was stunned into silence, but also, it suddenly felt wrong to do so. It would mean her legs would be gripping his waist, and his hands holding her up as their bodies were pressed together. She didn't feel like he was the one she should be so close and almost intimate with. "What are you waiting for?" he snapped, "We haven't got all day." It was Naraku that she wanted to wrap her legs around, not Inuyasha. She knew the action wasn't sexualized at all, but it still felt odd, as if she was cheating.
She was about to decline until she felt it, "A Shikon jewel shard!" Dismissing her hesitation, she clambered on and pointed in the direction. Everyone sprang into action in an instant. "Its only one shard, and its faint, meaning its far away."
Sango gasped at the possibility, however unlikely, "Is it Kohaku?"
"I'm not sure," Kagome responded quickly, trying to hone in on it harder.
"Keh, we'll just have to catch up and see," Inuyasha scoffed, the thrill of the hunt coursing through him. His predatory focus was singular, corner his prey; this left Kagome to hold on tightly as he leapt from branch to branch in hot pursuit. Finally catching a whiff, "It is Kohaku," he inhaled again, "and I think Kagura is with him. Yes, there's no mistaking that stench."
The pursuit continued for a long while, not a bit of progress being made. "Damn, we'll never catch them like this." He pushed himself harder, but Kirara was falling behind and his own energy was becoming depleted. Even if they did catch up, they'd be too exhausted to fight. "Damn," Inuyasha cursed as he stopped, setting Kagome down and waited for Kirara to catch up.
"I can't sense the shard anymore," Kagome informed.
"Their scent has vanished too," Inuyasha noted, the wind was already dispersing their trail. He grit his teeth in frustration.
"Inuyasha," Sango called in question as Kirara landed and instantly lay down to rest.
"We'll rest here," he responded between heavy breaths, looking defeated.
'Damn that Naraku, making me escort this brat around. What is the point of this anyways?' Kagura vented as she carried out her assignment. 'We aren't even fighting anyone, just leading that priestess around by the jewel shard. He must be trying to lure them somewhere. I wonder what he has up his sleeve this time.' A sudden barrier engulfed them. 'I guess that means my task is complete.' She turned to return to the castle, unsure of which was worse, being assigned a menial task but able to fly like the wind, or being left to her own devices within the confines of Naraku's barrier. 'Will I ever be truly free?'
(A/N: I have had inquiries about if I'll bring Sesshomaru into this story or not. Don't worry, I will. Expect to see him in Chapter 21 and on. Starting around then, the secret affair will begin to be leaked in tiny increments as well.
I will be posting one chapter a week, promise, until I run out of material or get writers block. I'm currently working on chapter 22, so I'm a ways ahead, and am excited to keep going. If only college took up less time/focus.)
