A/N: The holidays might slow me down but I am already working on the next chapter so hopefully not. Anyone reading Dissident Hope, I haven't given up and am still trying to work on it but Deliverance seems to be taking up all the creativity in my brain lately. I hope that will change soon, but maybe this can hold you over until then.
With InuYasha out again doing some reconnaissance and trying to gather more information about both the new group of mercenaries in town and whoever it was pretending to be Hojou Akitoki, Kagome decided it might be best for her to spend her time getting in a little training. She supposed that she could be working on refining the ideas in her head for the kagura she was expected to perform, but that was just too nerve wracking a prospect.
She changed into a pair of yoga pants and a sport’s bra, grabbed her cell phone and a bottle of water, and then headed into the spare room. The chart on the wall said that Sango had her down for endurance training today, which suited her just fine. She set her water in the cup holder and her phone in the small recess on the other side of the treadmill’s control panel and then turned on the machine.
Kagome walked for a few minutes to warm up and then slowly began increasing her speed. She was only just hitting her stride when a sense of wrongness creeped up her spine. She pressed the button to decrease the speed on the treadmill as a strange sort of smell burned her nose a little. At first she thought maybe something was rubbing inside the machine, but as she moved first to a walk and then stopped it altogether she realized that wasn’t the case. A sort of haze was creeping in through the open door, but it definitely wasn’t smoke as it had a short of purple hue.
Her heart rate picked up further from her workout pace. She hurried over to the door and closed it, engaging the lock. Next she grabbed some of the small towels she kept handy during her workout and pressed them into the small gap under the door to hopefully buy some time. After that she went and retrieved her cell phone. She quickly unlocked the screen and touched the small picture of InuYasha’s face that would dial his number and send the call.
“Hey beautiful, sorry but I can’t really talk right now,” InuYasha answered.
“Me neither,” she said quietly as she heard what was very clearly the sound of the front door being broken open. “Someone just broke in. There’s this weird sort of smoke too. I shut the door and put towels down but it’s still coming in a little.”
“Shit,” he breathed. “I’m headed your way right now. Don’t hang up, no matter what.”
“Okay,” she replied. “I’m going to tuck my phone in my sports bra though so my hands are free. I just, hurry, okay?”
She didn’t wait for his answer before sliding her phone under one of the shoulder straps near her breast. Ideally she would find an opening and make a run for it, but she wouldn’t hesitate to fight for her own life if she had to.
Kagome jumped a little as someone tried the knob.
“I know you’re in there,” a male voice called. “Perhaps you’ve already passed out.”
She swallowed hard and crept silently across the room, positioning herself against the wall to the side of the door. Hopefully whoever it was would take a few steps into the room and then she could just slip out behind them. It was then that she noticed the way the air had begun to almost crackle around her, a pale glow seeming to come from her skin, keeping the ever thickening fog in the air from touching her at all. Well, at least she seemed to be able to protect herself from whatever it was he was attempting to knock her out with, even if she had no idea how she was doing it.
Wood splintered as something banged against the door hard and it flew open. She held her breath as a very round man stepped inside. There was something about him besides the fact that he had broken into her home to kidnap or kill her that had her skin crawling. If he’d just take one more step, she knew she could past him. She inched over hoping to squeeze out behind him but unfortunately the small movement drew his attention and he turned with a horrible sort of smile.
“Now this is interesting,” he said. “My poison should have rendered you unconscious by now. My, you are a pretty one aren’t you? I’m suppose to bring you to my boss, but no one said we couldn’t have a little fun together first. I’m glad you didn’t pass out. It’s so much better when they can fight back a little.”
“Leave me alone!” she cried as he grabbed her. She brought up her knee into his groin and as he bent a little in pain she picked up one of the small hand weights behind her and hit him in the head.
He went down and she tried to dart out the door only to fall hard as he grabbed her ankle and tripped her. The side of her face smacked against the floor and all of the breath rushed out of her. From somewhere far away she thought she might have heard the sound of glass cracking and the right side of her chest started to sting, but that was the least of her concerns. She could feel his disgusting clammy hands and he moved them over her calves, pulling himself up her body. Time seemed to stand still as she desperately tried to draw in a breath and then at last she was able to fill her lungs once more.
His fingers dug into her and she screamed as she kicked at him over and over, trying to make him release her. Finally her heel connected with his nose and she could feel a sort of pop. He made a furious sound, his hold on her loosening enough that she was able to crawl free and regain her feet. She glanced back to find blood pouring from between his fingers as he held them over his face and felt only satisfaction.
“You bitch!” he cried. “My face!”
“It’s an improvement asshole!” she yelled and then raced towards the front door.
The halls were filled with the same purple haze but as her powers seemed to still be protecting her she ignored it. She bypassed the elevators, where she could easily be trapped and headed for the stairwell. She ran down them as fast as she could without tripping and falling until she burst out into the lobby. At the desk she could see Ikeda-san slumped over the counter. She wanted to help him, but first she had to save herself.
She shivered as the fresh air outside washed over her.
“Hey Ban, I think that’s her!”
Kagome’s eyes widened as she looked left to see a man dressed traditionally, but also in a decidedly feminine way. He was looking through her and she turned her head only to find another man, walking slowly towards her. Both of these men had the hair on the back of her neck standing on end. Not knowing what else to do she darted out into the street, ignoring the cars that honked at her. In the distance she could hear sirens and they were getting closer. She stepped up onto the opposite sidewalk and looked back.
The two men halted on the curb and glanced in the direction of the rapidly approaching emergency vehicles. The one called Ban smirked at her and then he and his partner disappeared into the gathering crowd.
She stepped further back away from the street and watched as all manner of vehicles with flashing lights pulled up and blocked off the street. Policemen began to urge people back away from her apartment building as firemen finished putting on their equipment so that they could head inside. She hoped that no one had been hurt because those men had come here looking for her, and that whatever gas he had used to knock them out would wear off.
“Miss, are you okay?” an older woman asked her, causing her to jump a little. “You’re bleeding.”
She realized now that she could taste blood on her lip and could feel a certain heat on the side of her face, but it was her shoulder that the woman gestured towards, a handkerchief in hand. She winced as she drew her broken cell phone free of her sports bra.
“Here, use this,” she said.
Kagome took the offered square of cloth and pressed it against the small cuts left behind. “Thank you.”
“Is there someone I can call for you, considering?” she asked with a glance at the broken phone in her hand.
“Oh, no thank you,” Kagome replied. “I was actually on the phone with someone when this all happened and I expect he’ll be here very soon.”
As if called by her words she hear him call out her name as he jumped effortlessly up onto the roof of a police car. Several officers approached him but as soon as he showed them his ring they were quick to bow and return to their crowd control duties.
“InuYasha!” she cried, running towards him.
The frantic expression on his face morphed into one of relief as he dropped down and met her in the middle of the street. She threw herself against him, ignoring the pain it cause and hugged him tightly. He smoothed her hair as he held her and she closed her eyes.
“You’re okay,” he said mostly to himself.
She lifted her head. “It’s my fault. They were here for me. There were three of them I think. The one who came inside and then two were out here on the street, but they left when they heard the sirens.”
He held her chin in one hand, examining the side of her face before licking both her cheek and her lip several times. “This is not your fault. It’s mine. Clearly I wasn’t careful enough and those bastards probably followed me right to you.”
“Excuse me, Inoue-sama,” a young man in a suit said with a bow. He was youkai but Kagome couldn’t tell what kind. “I am Hamada Akihiro with the T.R.T We could use your assistance. All the men who have gone inside to help have fallen unconscious. If you could tell us what we are dealing with here…”
“Keh, I don’t have any more an idea that you do,” InuYasha replied. “I’m here for her. We live in this building.”
“Does that mean she was inside and somehow managed to escape?” Hamada questioned.
“I-I was inside,” Kagome offered.
“Can you tell us how it is you managed to keep from passing out?” he questioned.
“I-I’m not really sure,” she admitted. “I’m a miko and I think my powers were purifying the air around me. I-I don’t know how.”
Hamada frowned and suddenly looked much older. “I know for a fact one of the first men in was a reiki user and he was affected just like everyone else who has tried to go inside.”
“She’s midori class,” InuYasha said. “Even the organized spiritualists really don’t have any idea what she’s capable of since no one has seen a midori class miko in five hundred years, so I don’t know what to tell you. Now I want to get her out of here.”
“I’m afraid that won’t be possible,” an older man said as he approached them. “She’s our only witness and we’ll need to take her in and debrief her. As well as putting her with a sketch artist. Chief Detective Yamada and I will be handling this investigation.”
InuYasha snorted. “Yeah, that’s not gonna happen. I’ll find out what she knows and pass the information along, but she’s not going anywhere with anyone I don’t trust and I sure as hell don’t trust you.”
“You don’t have that kind of authority,” he said.
“Actually I do,” InuYasha said. “First, she is under the protection of the youkai no taishou as a material witness in a double black level clearance investigation. Second she is my mate intended which puts her first under the jurisdiction of the youkai no taishou. Third she is classified as a miko and not just any miko, but one of midori class who falls under her own jurisdiction before she comes under yours. So it’s actually you who doesn’t have the authority here.”
“InuYasha, shouldn’t we help if we can?” Kagome asked quietly.
“Yeah, which is why I’ll get a real sketch artist, one I trust who will be a lot better than anyone they have working for them to work with you,” he told her. “And like I said, I’ll debrief you and pass on whatever information comes from that. Not that it will come to anything considering how many detectives that bastard has in his pocket with as incompetent the investigation of you being stalked was.”
“Then this event is somehow connected to her and your classified investigation?” Yamada questioned.
“It is,” InuYasha replied. “You want to prove you’re actually trying to do your job and that you haven’t been bought, start with her. Higurashi Kagome. She’s been stalked by a real psycho for over a year. This bastard has been murdering women who share her birthday to torment her and no one even bothered to make that connection or to test the blood from each of the crime scenes. He’s the one who sent the assholes here today who did this. You do that and maybe I’ll consider looping you in on the rest, but she stays with me.”
“Cheif, they are starting to wake up inside!”
Yamada looked at them for a moment longer and then offered InuYasha his card. “No one owns me. Take her, but I fully expect you to keep you word and send me whatever information she can provide.”
InuYasha took the card and stuck it in his pocket. “We’ll see. Come on, let’s get out of here. I need to call Sesshomaru and we need to get you fixed up a little better too.”
It felt like forever before InuYasha was satisfied that no one was following them and most of the front side of her body was aching. She couldn’t blame him for being careful, not after what had happened today, but she was definitely more than ready to lie down and rest by the time they arrived at the hotel that would be their home for a few days.
Kagome did her best to ignore the way people stared at her, knowing she probably looked terrible and that wasn’t even mentioning the fact that she was hardly dressed to be out and about. InuYasha growled at any man who dared to look at her for what he considered to be too long as he waited for the woman at the counter to finish checking them in.
As soon as they were in their room she was torn between taking a hot bath and collapsing on the bed. Oh and crying a little, definitely that. Normally she would have been annoyed as InuYasha decided for her by ushering her into the bathroom and turning on the water for her, but today it was just a relief. While he adjusted the temperature, she went ahead and started getting undressed, wincing a little at the pain it caused to lift her arms and to bend and twist.
InuYasha stood up and then helped her into the water. “Take as long as you want. I’m going to call Sesshomaru and see what he’s heard and call a friend about drawing up a few sketches for us.’
She nodded a little, sinking further into the hot water. He either sensed that she didn’t want to talk just yet or he wasn’t sure what to say as he leaned over and pressed a kiss against the top of her head before leaving her alone in the bathroom. She hated this, hated feeling so helpless, so hopeless. Even if she had managed to get away, to save herself today, it still felt like there was nothing she could do to stop what was happening.
When she thought about all the people who’d been hurt so far it made her sick. Those poor girls didn’t deserve to die so horribly just because they shared her birthday and the people in their apartment building had been at the very least made to feel afraid in their own homes. It just wasn’t right and even if some part of her knew it wasn’t her fault, it still felt like it was. Then there was InuYasha who’d lost almost everything he owned and his home, which had held so many fond memories of his short time with his mother. She could never make it up to him, and yet he was still here, still protecting her, loving her.
She turned off the water with her foot and then closed her eyes, sliding down until she was completely submerged, the world around her going still and quiet. Holding her breath she looked inward, focusing on the place of warmth and light she carried inside her and letting it comfort her. As her lungs began to burn she pushed herself up and drew in slow deep breaths, her face in her hands as she wiped the water away from her eyes.
InuYasha stepped back in and came to sit beside the tub. “So, you okay, really?”
“Basically,” she replied folding her arms on the side and resting her chin on them. “A little sad and alot angry. Trying not to feel guilty.”
He stroked her hair. “Well, this ain’t going to help with that. Sesshomaru said that two people died today. One was on old woman who had heart and breathing problems and her body just couldn’t take it and the other was in the shower and hit their head when they passed out. There were other injuries, but nothing too serious.”
“It’s not fair,” she said quietly.
“No, it’s not,” he agreed. “But it also isn’t your fault. Hell, it’s mine more than yours for not being more careful.”
She shook her head a little. “It’s not your fault either. If it wasn’t for you no one would even be trying to stop him. I just hate this. I wish there was more that I could do, you know.”
“Yeah,” he said. “Me too, but I will get him, I swear.”
“I know,” she told him. “And thank you for not trying to protect me by keeping it from me, what happened, for trusting that I could handle it.”
“Keh, of course I trust my beautiful ass kicking miko,” he told her smiling a little. “Sesshomaru also said he detected traces of your blood but that the majority of it belonged to the asshole who attacked you.”
“I hit him in the head with one of the barbells and then kicked him in the face,” she said. “I think I broke his nose.”
“That’s my girl,” he said.
“More than you know. I think you’ve rubbed off on me,” she told him. “He was yelling at me for messing up his face and I called him an asshole and said it was an improvement before I made a run for it.”
He chuckled as he leaned closer and brushed his lips against hers. “Damn, I love you woman.”
“I love you too,” she replied. “So, if you’re in here now does that mean you don’t have any more calls to make for a little while, or that you aren’t expecting anyone?”
He arched a brow at her. “What if it does?”
“Then I’d tell you the water has cooled down a little and invite you get in and help me wash my back,” she said with a soft smile. “If you wanted to, that is.”
He snorted and came to his feet already pulling his shirt off over his head. “If I wanted to. Keh, remember who you’re talking to here.”
His pants and underwear went next as one and she made sure he was paying attention as she let her eyes travel the length of him. With a grin, she moved up onto her knees so that she could reach out and wrap her fingers around him, tugging a little.
“Oi, that’s not a handle,” he teased.
“Then hurry up and get in here already,” she said.
As soon as she released him, he stepped into the water behind her and then sat down, drawing her back against him. She shuddered a little as he nibbled at the back of her shoulder. He would never be able to say just how grateful he was that she’d been able to escape today. The panic he’d felt as he listened to that bastard, and then when the call had gone dead, he’d never felt like that before. He never wanted to feel like that again, and if something worse had happened to her, well he didn’t even want to think about that.
He knew she didn’t blame him, but it was at least in some small way his fault for not being more careful. It was a mistake he wouldn’t make again. He was going to take take out every single one of the assholes that was trying to hurt and then they were going to get married and live happily ever after and that was all there was to it.
She shifted a little, turning her head to look up at him. He leaned down kissing her softly, his chest aching at the emotion on her face and in her eyes. He vowed in that moment never to take it for granted and prayed that she’d never stop looking at him like she was now, hoped that she could see just how much she meant to him too.
“Tell me we’re always going to be together,” she said.
“Always,” he assured her, before covering her mouth with his.
