Chapter Nineteen:
A Hint of Silver
“Just you wait, Kagura!
Kagome’ll come save us!” Shippo
cried, his mouth having escaped the confining gag Kagura had made sure to put
in place.
“Listen here, you little brat,” Kagura warned, her fan held
at hede, de, “I want your Kagome to come here. Her and that black-haired boy friend of hers.”
“That’s right,” Sango thought, “Kagura still thinks
Leota is Kyo. What a surprise for her
when Kagome-san gets here.”
“I hope Kagome went back to her time to apologize to
Leota, because if she didn’t, well, I don’t care how many ‘sits’ I get!” Inu-Yasha thought, struggling against the
bonds of wind that held him and the others helpless.
Kaede sat motionless, her gaze watching Kouga, whom had not
moved since he’d collapsed in front of the well.
“From what I know of wolf demon magic, he is trying with
all of his power to bring Leota-san here.
However, I fear that the effort of trying shall be his downfall.” Kaede thought, shaking her head sadly.
“How much father, Ota-chan?”
“Just a little bit farther.
It strikes me as odd that though I know this is where Kouga-kun is, I
don’t feel him as strongly as I did.”
Kagome was immediately reminded of what Kaede had told her
about wolf demons bringing the dead to life just by wishing it.
Shielding her thoughts so Leota wouldn’t find out just yet,
Kagome thought, “The mere hope that Ota-chan might return is the one thing
keeping him alive, yet he’s killing himself for something he doesn’t even know
will happen or not.”
“It’s called blind faith.”
Leota’s voice startled Kagome from her thoughts, “What?”
“The belief that something will happen even if you have to
harm yourself just for the right to believe it. It’s blind faith.”
“You heard everything?”
“I’ve been doing a little searching of your thoughts, that’s
all. When you think something, it rings
in my head, like a little bell. Once I
heard that little bell, I decided to try and find out the last thing you’d
said.”
“I’m sorry.”
Leota sighed, “Kagome, what did I tell you about saying ‘I’m
sorry’?”
“Pardon, Ota-chan.
I apologize for the fact that Kouga is harming himself without knowing
if he’ll ever see you again.”
“Better,” Leota said, now using Kagome’s voice, “we’re here.”
“Mind if I have my body back?” Kagome asked, watching as the ground came
closer until they finally landed softly.
Kagome added, making sure her voice had an edge to it.
“All right then,” Kagura said briskly, tryio reo regain her
composure, “where is she?”
“That’s none of your business.” Kagome snapped.
“Dammit, Kagome!” Inu-Yasha yelled in his mind, “You
just couldn’t make up with her, could you?”
“My, my, my, touchy today, are we?”
“Quit putting your nose where it doesn’t belong, all
right? It’s my business, not yours!”
“You tell her, K-chan!” Leota cheered, “Can I have
a turn? an>Han>Huh, huh, please? She’s gonna hit you, if you don’t let me
have a turn, I’ll let you get hit!”
Quickly surrendering her body to Leota, she found herself
looking at Kagura a d a different angle.
“Where did you go?”
Kagura exclaimed.
“I’m right here.”
Leota said, for now using Kagome’s voice.
Whirling around to face the voice, Kagura wore a look of
surprise on her face.
“How did you...?”
“Get behind you? It’s
very easy, Kagura. All one has to do is
ride the wind currents, but of course, one such as yourself would know that.”
Letting out a snarl of anger, Kagura opened her fan fully,
“Dance of the Dead!”
Immediately, corpses appeared from the bottom of a ravine
that was close by, flying towards Kagome, who stood still.
“Why didn’t I smell them?!” Leota thought, hiding all of her thoughts
from Kagome, who appeared to be sleeping.
The corpses reeked of death, and even when Leota used wind
magic to help increase her speed, she couldn’t quite outrun them. Kagome’s body couldn’t handle such speeds.
“Hnu’reu’re just as annoying as that wolf,” Kagura commented
as she called the corpses to her, “always dashing from one place to another.”
Slowing to a stop, Leota bared her teeth, “What are you
talking about? What have you done with
Kouga-kun?”
Inu-Yasha’s heart sank.
She’d called the wolf ‘Kouga-kun’.
“Great,” his thoughts mumbled, “where does that put
me?”
“Way down at the bottom.” A small voice dared to say in his head. A voice that strongly reminded him of Myoga.
“If I could find another body,” Leota thought, “I
could be even faster, but I doubt that the kind of body I need is actually here.”
“Where are you looking?”
Kagura asked, a cynical smile on her face as she snapped her fan shut.
Just barely escaping one of Kagura’s corpses, Leota landed
and began running towards the place Kagura had hidden her captives.
That’s when she saw him.
Eyes widening, Leota completely forgot about Kagura as she
began running to him.
“Kouga-kun!” She
yelled, trying to make him hear her.
“Ah, I see you found them.
A pity they’ll all die if you don’t defeat me.”
Leota bared her teeth once more, “Don’t you worry, Kagura of
the Wind, I shall defeat you, one way or another.”
“Wha...?”
The anger in Kagome’s voice surprised Kagura, for she had
thought the girl was in love with Inu-Yasha.
She watched as Kagome ran to Kouga’s side and held his head in her lap,
for Kagura hadn’t bother to bind him, knowing he was too weak to move.
So intent was Leota about trying to help Kouga, she didn’t
even notice the small amount of magic being pulled out of her little by
little. All she wanted was for him to
at least open his eyes, to twitch, to something. She heard it then, in the back of her
mind. A whine. Sounding very much like a call for
help. Leota turned.
One of Kouga’s wolves stood behind a rock, trying to keep
itself hidden from Kagura’s view. Its
ears were lowered and its yellow-brown eyes held great sadness.
Knowing she was strong enough to at least shield the wolf,
Kouga, and herself, Leota beckoned the wolf to come over. It walked over cautiously, glancing at
Kagura to make sure the wind witch wouldn’t try to pull anything. Finally reaching Leota’s side, Leota put
Kouga’s head back on the ground and began walking towards Inu-Yasha, whom
seemed to be very upset.
He glared at her as she came over, “What do you want,
Wench?”
She said nothing, not bothering to dignify that statement
with a retort, but instead knelt in front of him, touching the bonds of wind
with her index finger. Immediately, the
wind was purified and disappeared.
Inu-Yasha was dumbfounded.
She looked at him, and in Kagome’s voice spoke, “Inu-Yasha,
could you... hold me?”
Now Inu-Yasha was doubly confused, “Why should I do that?”
“Because I freed you,” she said, forcing tears to her eyes,
“can’t you at least hold me? Just for a
little bit?”
Sighing, Inu-Yasha held out his arms, which Kagome
immediately fell into.
She hugged his neck, “Thank you, Inu-Yasha. You have no idea how much this will mean to
Kagome when she wakes.”
“What...?” Inu-Yasha
asked, but was distracted as Kagome put her hand on the wolf’s head and put her
own head on his shoulder.
The wolf closed its eyes and shook itself before looking at
Inu-Yasha, a grin seemingly on its face.
Inu-Yasha, though, didn’t see the grin, for he was too occupied with its
eyes.
“Weren’t its eyes just brown?” He thought, “If they
were, then why are they blue now?
Unless...”
Inu-Yasha looked down to Kagome, and could only wonder just what
she had done in her time.
“If you’re all quite done with all of this sweet talk,”
Kagura began, her voice very annoyed, “I would like to continue my battle with
the girl.”
“I told you that your battle was with me, Wind
Witch. Leave Kagome out of
it.” A voice said from somewhere behind
a rock.
Kagura turned around, looking for the source of the voice,
but she could not find one. Kouga’s
wolf had walked over to him and was now standing by his side.
“Who speaks?” Kagura
demanded.
“I did.”
Still searching for the source of the voice, Kagura saw
something out of the corner of her eye.
Kouga’s wolf was now walking towards her, mouth open in a kind of smirk,
and eyes dancing with knowledge only it knew.
“What do you want?”
Kagura asked the wolf, waving it away with her hand as she tried to find
the one who had spoken.
“You must truly be Naraku’s incarnation, Wind Sorceress, to
not even know where your opponents are.”
Kagura turned to the wolf once more, glaring at it.
“And just what makes you say that?” Kagura asked, still looking at the wolf, hoping to see the
nuisance out of the corner of her eye.
“Well,” the wolf began, “for one, you didn’t know where I
was. The reason I say that Naraku
doesn’t know where his opponents are is because he supposedly has not
even pinpointed you as an adversary.”
“What do you know about it?” Kagura snapped, sending her corpses back behind the rocks.
Thlf slf seemed to shrug as it lay down, “Oh of course, what
does the bitch know about anything?
Listen, Wind Sorceress, I know what you think. The wind tells me that you wish to be nothing more than free from
Naraku, and that this whole battle of yours is designed to make all of us your
slaves to use against Naraku; howevehat’hat’s only if we lose.”
“And are you so confident in your strength to feel that you
could lie down in front of me?”
“Yes. The wind tells
me it is safe. You don’t wish to fight
us to win our strength. You’d best try
to bargain with us.” The wolf
said, the bonds of wind releasing everyone else.
“Just why should I bargain with you?”
“Fine, don’t bargain with us; bargain instead with me.”
“With you?”
“Yes,” the wolf said, changing shape to that of a familiar
dark-haired, blue-eyed, flame-throwing woman, “hi there. Heard you were lookin’ for me. Name’s not important, ’cause if I say it,
I’ll be thrown out, but you can call me Ookami-san. How ’ya doin’?”
Kagura looked at the woman, who had a smile on her face and
the same smile danced in her blue eyes.
“Ota-chan?” Shippo
asked tentatively.
She turned to look at him, “Shippo-chan! Of course it’s me! Who else would I be, huh?”
Shippo’s eyes grew wide and he quickly ran to her and leapt
into her arms, rubbing his head against her shoulder.
“I’m so glad you’re back, Ota-chan! We missed you so much!” Shippo exclaimed, pulling back a little,
“But didn’t Kagome banish you? How are
you here?”
“Yes, Lady Le...”
“Say that name and I’ll burn you to a crisp!”
Promptly shutting his mouth before speaking her name any
farther, Miroku tried again, “All right then, Ota-san, how are you able
to be here?”
Sighing and shifting Shippo to sit on her left shoulder, “I’m
only here because K-chan allowed me to use her body and come here. My own body is around her neck right now, in
that blue jewel. My spirit resided
within K-chan’s mind, which allowed me to take over her body and fight Kagura
through her. But then I changed bodies,
and so technically, I’m not Ota-chan because I’m not in that body.”
Feeling very aed ted that she was being ignored, Kagura
narrowed her eyes and was about to slice all of them in half when something
caught her eye. A gold bracelet was on
the young woman’s wrist, and upon it were gems of different colors. Gems that Kagura knew all too well.
“Why do you need the Elemental Stones?” Kagura asked, closing her fan withnap.nap.
The woman turned, a look of surprise on her face, which was
soon covered by a sly smile, “You caught me.
Heh, you’re the only one that has ever noticed the Stones upon my
wrist. Very good, Kagura.”
“You never answered why you needed them.”
“I may know spells from each of the different magics: earth,
lightning, wind, ice, water, light, fire, darkness, mind, and spirit; however,
only fire magic is native to me as an element.
Light and darkness are usually set aside from the others, as are mind
and spiritual. So of the six elements,
I am a demon of fire. Between light and
darkness, well, darkness found me.
Between mind and spiritual, though, I never chose. I never wanted the responsibility of being
even a sprite in either. But between
the two, my teachers guessed that I would be categorized in the topic of mind
magic.”
“So you need the Stones to perform any other of your
magic? Such as wind?” Kagura asked, very curious how this woman
could have learned wind if she were of fire origin.
The woman’s face saddened as she sighed and looked at the
bracelet, “Yes. The only way I can
perform any such other magics as wind or earth are all thanks to this
bracelet. Without it, I’m just a woman
of high-ranking fire origins.”
At that moment, Inu-Yasha thought he saw Leota’s body
flicker. For a mere moment, a woman
with white hair stood before them, but then she was gone. Kagura seemed to have seen it too, for her
eyes were wide.
“Y-Your hair...” She
began.
“What about my hair?
It’s the same color as yours.
And didn’t I tell you to call me Ookami-san? Or Ota-san? Either one
works!”
“Not anymore.” Kagura
said, pointing to one of the strands that framed her face.
“What do you mean ‘not anymore’? And what the hell are you pointing at?!”
“Your hair is no longer the same color as mine, uh,
Ookami-san.”
Finally figuring out that Kagura was pointing at her hair,
Ookami picked at the strand of hair she’d indicated.
And bit back a scream.
“Oh my God,” she breathed, “it’s begun. The curse is ending. Soon, I’ll be free. I can’t believe it!”
“Can’t believe what?”
Kagura asked, looking at the silver strand in the woman’s grasp.
Ookami looked up at the wind sorceress, strand still clutched
in her hand, “I’m free, Kagura-san! In
just a few days, I’ll be free! Once
more shall my beauty rival that of the moon herself! Once again shall all who knew of me cower at the sight of
moonlight and shadows! And once again,
Kagura-san, shall I be able to sing of my promises and have the whole of
the land hear me.”
Kagura, along with everyone else, was surprised to see just
how excited ‘Ookami’ got at the sight of her hair becoming silver. And Kagura also noticed that the boy’s,
Kyo’s, eyes had been green. This girl’s
eyes were blue. Was it all part of a
chain reaction of her soon-coming freedom?
And why would people cower at moonlight, shadows, and sung
promises?
However what really got Kagura was this: Ookami was being
freed.
But from what?
A/N: sorry to keep you waiting! There’s been mention of a curse before, but
I didn’t want to touch on it just yet.
It’ll probably come up within the next chapter or two. By the way, I don’t know what the next
chapter will be called, so please just keep checking!
Thanks to all those who reviewed! I
feel so loved! And now Leota-chan isn’t
that much of a Mary-Sue because she has to draw power from a bracelet! Muahahaha!
~Ookami-chan~
P.S. Oh! And I know that in my summary, I mention Sesshomaru-sama, so I’ll
make sure to actually remember to put him in here! Maybe even so soon as the next chapter! Woohoo!
