"Will they sentence me to death?" Kagome brought up as she followed obediently. She knew she couldn't escape. Kagome wanted nothing more than to be in Sesshoumaru's embrace. But she knew, this had to be done. Perhaps she figured her death would be the day the Lord of Councils arrive, they would find her guilty and she wouldn't be able to prove herself innocent.
"Father?" Kagome heard Sesshoumaru's voice behind her. Inu-Taishou turned around to greet his son, "Wrong dungeon, Sesshoumaru. The Lords of Council will arrive shortly... around two days. Kagome, follow." The Western Lord turned on his heels and began to walk away. Sesshoumaru stared longingly at Kagome. He swelled with pride when he noticed she was wearing his kimono. He brushed his lips against hers softly and whispered in her ears,
"This Sesshoumaru will find a way to free you..."
Present...
"Sire, we apologize," a guard patrolling the stairwell to the Northern Dungeons bowed respectfully, "We simply can not allow you to go in."
Sesshoumaru growled in annoyance, "I am your Prince. This Sesshoumaru's word is not to be denied" he responded, his smooth baritone voice vibrated from his throat. The guards shivered at their Prince's authoritative tone. They bowed lowly,
"Sire, Our Lord Inu-Taishou left us with specific orders to not let anyone contact the prisoner." Sesshoumaru inwardly sighed. Today is the day that the Lord of Council would arrive. Today is the day that Kagome might be sentenced to death, and no one can stop them. Was it so hard to see his beloved before her trial? At this given point, Sesshoumaru didn't care if Kagome conspired against him. He didn't care she could've destroyed the Western Lands. All he wanted now, was to see her; to feel her milky skin under his feathery caresses.
Sadly, he was being denied access to his Kagome, 'An offense worse than murder' Sesshoumaru thought bitterly before he nodded sharply and turned on his heels and headed to his father's study. There was something that bothered him, and he couldn't figure it out at all. His beast invaded his dreams for the past several days and he couldn't figure out why. His beast's eyes were bloodshot, his markings were jagged, his fangs lengthened... only to say 'Bring me to Kagome' and disappear into the dark depths of his mind. Sesshoumaru shook his head and sighed, 'Have you casted a spell on me, Kagome?'
'Why are you so important to this Sesshoumaru, Kagome? What have you done that is so extradinary that you stand out in my mind? Or do I just simply crave for your curvaceous body?' Sesshoumaru stared at the massive wooden doors to his father's study. There were so many questions running through his head, so many unanswered questions that bewildered him. Sesshoumaru couldn't help but feel in the back of his mind that there was something going on. Something off, something... dare he say it, "Planned..."
"Enter," Sesshoumaru heard his father's voice from the other side of the room. Sesshoumaru stepped in and bowed lowly; in respect for his father. Inu-Taishou looked up from his scrolls and parchments, "Was there something you need, Sesshoumaru?" The elder Taishou had a feeling Sesshoumaru was going to question him why he doesn't have access to speak with Kagome. For the past several days, Sesshoumaru had made countless attempts to bribe or threaten their soldiers to let him through. Inu-Taishou sighed, "If it's about your courtesan, I wish not to speak of it."
Sesshoumaru growled softly in frustration, "Why, Father? This Sesshoumaru only wishes to speak to Kagome. Even if it is for a short while." Inu-Taishou was highly concerned for his son. He almost sounded... desperate. Desperate to come in contact with this strange human girl he had never heard of. Inu-Taishou rummaged through his desk until he found the series of large binded parchments and handed it to Sesshoumaru.
"My pup, your courtesan... her name is not listed in any brothel throughout Japan," Inu-Taishou watched warily for Sesshoumaru's reaction as he scanned through each page, looking for Kagome's name. Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes, "Father, she was hired the day Jyunchi and I attended the brothel. I do not find it out of the ordinary." Come to think of it, Sesshoumaru knows nothing about Kagome. She didn't reveal where she was born or who her mother was. Heck, he wasn't too sure of her age. How is it that he is so smitten with her, when he knew nothing about her... other than the information she has told him the night he took her to his mother's secret garden.
"Sesshoumaru, she is not in the mortal list either," Inu-Taishou whispered. The Western Lord feared for his son's safety when he discovered Kagome Higurashi, was not listed in any human records. The surname Higurashi, was non-existent. The human, hanyou and youkai population are recorded every five years with a census. Each of the Lords of Council have a copy of the list. Inu-Taishou has spent the past day searching for anyone with the surname of Higurashi to find leads on this mysterious girl.
Sesshoumaru shook his head in disbelief, he didn't want to believe that Kagome could be an illusion, or worse... a shapeshifter. "Perhaps she is an orphaned child," he blurted out. Inu-Taishou sighed, 'If only it was that easy to figure out.'
"Sesshoumaru, I'm afraid she is not an orphaned child. She mentioned she had a brother and father-" Inu-Taishou was interrupted by short knocks on the door. The elder inu demon raised his eyebrow questionably, "Enter." Who can it be?
"Lord Inu-Taishou," the girl known as Sango greeted in a shaky voice. Sesshoumaru remembers her, she was the one Kagome wanted to find. Maybe they can get answers out of her! He looked at his father. The sudden spark in his eyes revealed that he had the same idea as well.
"What is it that you need?" Inu-Taishou questioned carefully, making sure to use the tone of his voice to his advantage. Sango bowed lowly, "Please, I beg you. Release Kagome! She's been through so much already, and I know for sure Kagome will never do such a thing!"
Sesshoumaru stared at the girl in front of him, 'Why wasn't she imprisoned as well? This girl after all, was with Kagome even before she entered the Western Palace.' Something was extremely off, Sesshoumaru hated this feeling of being unable to solve this atrocious dilemma known as Kagome.
"What do you know of her conspiracy?" Sesshoumaru demanded out of nowhere. Inu-Taishou was taken back slightly at his son's sudden outburst, 'Is he on to something?' he remained quiet.
Sango shook her head and denied, "I know nothing of Kagome's conspiracy. Because there is none! Kagome spoke with honesty when she told me the tragic story between one of the brothel owners and her father. She is not the kind to conspire," Sango ended her sentence with a soft whisper. She refused to believe Kagome was such a person. But she knew, Kagome had an unusual, almost royal aura about her when Sango first served her. Sango knew for sure Kagome was different.
"What transpired between the brothel, you, Kagome and her family?" Sesshoumaru was half curious, the other half thought he had a hunch on something. What exactly? He wasn't sure. But he has to find out, for Kagome. Sango shifted uneasily under their intense gaze,
"Kagome arrived at the brothel looking for a job to pay off Yuko, the owner of the brothel. All the jobs in the brothel was filled and since they heard Prince Sesshoumaru was coming, they needed a fresh virgin. Kagome... well she offered herself in return of paying off the debt her father has created. I was ordered to freshen her up to serve you that very night."
Sesshoumaru nodded slightly, 'This information is accurate' he remembered what Kagome has told Naraku in the gardens a few days ago. Sango continued, "In the morning, Yuko told me to serve under Kagome from now on, since she will be staying at the brothel... for Prince Sesshoumaru's return. Kagome thought she only had to stay there for one night, so she asked me to help her escape. We reached her hut, and retrieved her father and brother. Before we left the hut, her father rushed inside to grab some box. I didn't think too much of it and so we left the city.
"We made camp when it was getting dark. Kagome left to the woods to gather branches for fire. She was only gone for a short while until I saw and heard bandits coming our way. Screaming, 'Find the girl!' I assumed they were looking for us, so I rushed her father and brother away from the camp and the bandits. We rested near a stream, hoping Kagome would be safe. When we waited, it felt like an eternity. Then all of a sudden we heard a low growl. A massive neko youkai, the size of the brothel pounced on us and snatched Ken and Souta in its mouth and fled. I was chasing after it, but it was too fast. Kagome's family... was kidnapped by neko youkais." Sango bowed her head in shame. She should've done better, she could've killed that youkai like the snake demon she murdered. Sango sighed, she was a failure. Though they had just met, Sango felt... Kagome was a close friend.. maybe a sister in someway.
Inu-Taishou was impressed with Kagome's sense of duty and resilience for her family, 'But this doesn't explain why she isn't in the records.' The trio was interrupted by a soft knock at the door, "Inu-Taishou-sama, the Lords of Council will be here within two hours."
"Ah, thank you Miroku," the Western Lord nodded. Miroku noticed Sango on her knees in front of his Prince and Lord. He was skeptical, but he had a feeling they were talking about Kagome. He was surprised that has transpired in Kagome's life in just a week, what was even more surprising to him was that the intruder that wanted to kill Kagome was never found. Miroku too, had questions for his lord.
"If I may intrude, Lord Inu-Taishou. I too, have questions regarding Kagome-sama's arrival," Miroku bowed lowly and helped Sango to her feet. Sango protested softly, but Miroku wouldn't have it, "Stand up Sango. Lord Inu-Taishou would not mind." Sango waited for the Western Lord's approval. He nodded. Miroku kept his arm around Sango's slim waist, "Milord, we never found that intruder... I have a feeling the Eastern family is the mastermind behind the conspiracy."
Inu-Taishou shook his head, "We can not accuse without proof, Miroku. You are my trusted friend, you too believe the East is the mastermind behind this?" Miroku nodded. He reached inside his kimono and retrieved that single strand of crimson hair, "I found this entangled around the vial or 'antidote' that Naraku-sama brought to us. Isn't it odd, that he knew who had this antidote? Yuna is the best healer in all of Japan, skilled in all sorts of diseases and poison. Yet that very poison Kagome-sama was suffering from, Yuna had no such cure."
"This strand, the Eastern daughter's hair is of such color," Inu-Taishou concluded after examining the strand of crimson hair closely. He brought the strand close to his nose and sniffed it carefully, his eyes widen. This strand of hair, indeed belongs to Kagai. "What is the meaning of this, Miroku?" The elder inu demanded.
Miroku rubbed his chin thoughtfully, "Sire, I strongly believe Kagome-sama have nothing to do with the Eastern Lord's plans. If so, why would her own life be put in danger to benefit the East? Why would Kagai-sama's hair be wrapped around the 'antidote' vial, and how would Naraku-sama know who poisoned the arrow? I can't help but feel, Kagome-sama's being blackmailed... or perhaps forced to help the Eastern Lord."
Sesshoumaru digested this vital piece of reasoning. What Miroku said absolutely made sense, why would Kagome warn him not to ascend the throne if she wanted to benefit from the East? What made Sesshoumaru feel even worse, he distrusted her called her the same word he forbid anyone else to call her. He sighed inaudibly, he has wronged Kagome. How could he look her in the eyes now? When he searched for her for answers in the dungeon, he forced her to confess to him while they were intimately joined together. He wanted to see her now more than ever; to apologize, 'This Sesshoumaru... will not apologize to anyone but you Kagome.'
"Milords, the vial and the poison on the arrow are created from dark magic. If the Eastern Royal family can concoct such vials, they can definitely brew up new potions that can control the minds, speech or even movement of a person," Miroku was trying to put the pieces together. He was sure the Eastern royal family practices dark magic, he just have to prove it clearly. Sango gasped softly, "I've heard of the uses of the dark arts. I once read from a book in the brothel, that creatures can be molded from various natural objects from nature. From herbs to blood and flesh. I think they were called shapeshifters. They're soulless creatures that will do anything their master bids them to do... I always thought dark magic was a myth."
Miroku shook his head, "It is very real, my dear Sango. These creatures can be molded into any shape or size. What's even more surprising, I recently found that these shapeshifters can be molded into a clone of a creature, identical in physical apperance." Sesshoumaru's eyes widen slightly, 'Kagome claims that the person who bedded Naraku wasn't her.'
"Father, This Sesshoumaru believes there is a shapeshifter within our palace," Sesshoumaru shifted his gaze to his father.
"Sesshoumaru, we can keep assuming-" Inu-Taishou began but was interrupted by his pup. "Father, Kagome claims she was not the one who bedded Naraku. You were there with me. You saw how the shapeshifter reacted when this Sesshoumaru confronted her. She held no shame in declaring aloud she was using me. However, the real Kagome would cry and look away in shame... The Kagome we saw in bed with Naraku, is a shapeshifter."
"That is impossible! Who in the palace can create such a being? This is outrageous Sesshoumaru!" Inu-Taishou turned his back to his audience. He mentally sighed, the Lords of Council will be in the Western Palace momentarily and here they are discussing about it without them. Miroku remained silent for several seconds until his voice broke the tension in the room, "Sire, I think Sesshoumaru-sama's right."
The Western Lord furrowed his eyebrows and stared at his loyal friend, "Is that so?" Miroku nodded. It was hard to ignore Miroku's reasoning, though he may seem like a pervert, but his logical reasoning is unsurpassed by anyone else in Japan. "If we put the information together... it only leads to the Eastern family. The vial had a strand of Kagai's hair wrapped around the head of the vial. The vial and the poison reacted together to form that pebble filled with dark chi. The intruder was never found. Kagome-sama claims that she did not bed Naraku. Other than Kagome-sama, Naraku and Kagai seem to be the ones who are part of these events."
"You believe Naraku and Kagai are the masterminds behind the conspiracy?" Sesshoumaru spoke up, asking the question for his father. He wanted to prove Kagome innocent, he wanted to apologize for wronging her, he wanted to hold her in his arms once again.
Miroku shook his head, "Naraku and Kagai are too young, and have a lack of resources and experience to come up with such a plan. Malitzou however, he is the one we should question. He ascended the Eastern throne a decade ago, without warning. The court officials of the East immediately sucummbed to him, giving him absolute power of the Eastern Lands. During his initiation into the Lords of Council, we all asked how did he ascend the throne. Do you remember what he said?"
"... I am the trusted soldier of the previous ruling family..." Inu-Taishou answered. Miroku nodded, "Malitzou claimed he was thee trusted soldier." Miroku went to one of the shelves of the study and withdrew a series of parchment binded together into a book like form. He flipped to the middle of the book and read from it,
"Eastern Ruling Family; Ijiwaru Malitzou. Youkai" Miroku then flipped back several page and read from that, "Eastern Ruling Family; Seijitsu Kenji. Human." He flipped through the Eastern family section several times, saying the ruling family's name. Inu-Taishou raised his hand, "Enough, Miroku. What are you trying to say?"
"All these Eastern Rulers before Malitzou were human. Before Malitzou, the Eastern land lived in peace and prosperity... under human rulers. The Eastern Land is said to have a curse. If the ruler is not of human race, or approved by the inhabitants of the Eastern land, the Heavens will show their disapproval by wrecking havoc through the land with droughts, floods, forest fires and volcanic eruptions," Miroku answered, his voice firm and confident.
"Are you trying to saying the Ijiwaru family is unfit to rule the Eastern Lands?" Inu-Taishou questioned. Miroku shrugged softly, "Partially. Milord, since millenniums ago the Eastern land are ruled by humans, mortals with or without spiritual power. Because Malitzou ascended the throne, the Eastern land is living in poverty and fear. Records show the trusted guard of the previous ruling family is a human. I believe, Malitzou have something to do with the page that is burnt into crisps." Miroku flipped several pages forward, then stretching the binds far apart to show the remains of the burnt page. Inu-Taishou, Sesshoumaru and Sango examined the remains of the burnt page.
"Who dare enter my library and burn a page off such an important document?" Inu-Taishou growled dangerously.
"Father, no one knows the existence of this book other than you, me and Miroku. I doubt Miroku would burn a page off such an important document," Sesshoumaru reassured his father. Inu-Taishou nodded briefly, what his son just said had made perfect sense. Miroku was his trusted friend and his trusted advisor. He wouldn't do such a thing, "Then who?"
"Inu-Taishou-sama, I think it's not a who. It's a what. Dark magic have mystical, unexplored traits and effects. I believe Malitzou had something to do with this mis-" Miroku was interrupted by a series of loud booming knocks. Inu-Taishou called for the being to enter, a messenger bowed respectfully.
"Milord, the Lords of Council has arrived. They are currently waiting in the courtroom." Inu-Taishou nodded, he looked at Sesshoumaru. His son's face was pale, he was worried for his beloved. Inu-Taishou sighed, "Come... for we have a trial to conduct."
Kagome sighed, she had the weirdest sensation travelling through her body. She woke up this morning with a sudden, yet fierce desire to see Sesshoumaru. It was strong enough to drive her into tears. The pain was sensational, it wasn't an emotional pain. It was a raw, unrelenting, physical heartache. Kagome relaxed on the cotton futon. She was grateful Lord Inu-Taishou gave her something to sleep on, fresh water, and food that was fit for a higher middle class. Considering she is a prisoner in his castle, Kagome was treated fairly well.
With all this time alone, Kagome found herself thinking a lot about Sesshoumaru. Small, minor details like the shape and nooks of his ears to larger details like his well chiseled chest, she remembers it all. Kagome smiled to herself, 'Could I really be in love you with, Sesshoumaru-sama?' It was true she loved him, but she wasn't sure how much. Kagome blushed at their last encounter, remembering their rough and intimate joining sent shivers crawling up her spine. She couldn't believe she confessed to him, "I... do not regret it though" she whispered tenderly.
Kagome turned her attention to the cell gate when she heard keys rattling. Jyunchi and Kouga unlocked the gates and motioned for her to follow them, "It's time for your trial. The Lords of Council have assembled together." Kagome blinked several times, "So soon?"
Kouga nodded and softly guided her to her feet, "Are you well?" Kagome was shocked at his tenderness. In the wolf demon's eyes, she saw sympathy and determination. She was fairly confused why the emotion of determination, but she knew fairly well why sympathy. The Lords of Council may sentence her to death today if they find her guilty. Kagome nodded, "I'm ready." In all honesty, she wasn't ready. She wanted to crawl in a hole and never come out. Kagome was scared beyond belief.
Kagome sighed, 'I will be sentenced to death... Malitzou made me drink that revolting obedience potion, and ordered me to kill Sesshoumaru-sama. I can't deny the fact that... that is conspiring against the Western Family. However, am I ready to leave this world?' The trio reached a new set of large wooden doors Kagome has never seen before. The majestic doors were decorated with large inu carvings, every detail etched in the fine wood. Jyunchi gave a sympathetic glance at Kagome and was about to push the door open.
"Wait," a baritone voice interrupted Jyunchi's action. Sesshoumaru stood several feet away from the group, "This Sesshoumaru will send her in." Jyunchi knew his friend wanted some time with Kagome before she has her trial. He nodded, even Sesshoumaru won't go as far as to disobey the Lords of Council. He pulled the reluctant Kouga away from Kagome and Sesshoumaru. He stopped momentarily and looked at Kagome, "Good luck."
"Kagome... This Sesshou-" Sesshoumaru began. He stopped in the middle of his sentence, he was cut off by a tender kiss from Kagome. His long, lean arms encircled Kagome's small frame and crushed her body into his chest. He let his senses indulge in her scent, the texture of her hair, the sweet taste of her lips. Kagome pulled back slowly, "Sesshoumaru-sama, I-"
The large wooden doors open, revealing a figure in a large, flowing cloak. Without a word the figure snatched her from Sesshoumaru's arms and began to drag her in the room. Kagome cried out for Sesshoumaru. Sesshoumaru's aura flared in anger, the feeling to protect pulsed through his body, "Kagome!"
Jyunchi, Kouga and Miroku rushed from the halls and restrained Sesshoumaru so he couldn't follow her into the room. Kagome's tears glistened under the torch's flame. She knew this was it, the Lords will prove her to be guilty and she will be sentenced to death. She will no longer be able to see, feel, or breathe.
"Goodbye..."
Sesshoumaru's eyes dilated, the white in his eyes now covered with crimson red blood, 'No! I refuse to say goodbye.'
Sesshoumaru growled and clawed at his friends who restrained him. He watched helplessly as she disappeared inside the long corridor. His beast whined helplessly as the massive wooden doors began to close, cutting him away from his Kagome. Sesshoumaru let out a mighty roar that shook the palace walls,
"We will... meet again, my love..."
