Chapter 19
The day went by and everyone was
more relaxed. Sesshomaru
and Kagome played with the kids most of the day and they even managed to talk
her into singing a few more of her songs for them. Shippo had always
loved her songs and now Rin seemed to love them as
well. Rin
however seemed to like the rock songs more than the techno, which was Shippo’s favorite. Sesshomaru seemed to like all of her songs.
When Kagome sang Sesshomaru
felt almost like he was in a trance. Her
songs were different than anything he had ever heard, but he found he loved it
all. The different beats and sounds were
completely enthralling. It also helped
that her voice was perfect, however all of her songs
seemed to have a sad undertone to them, no matter how upbeat the music itself
was. He could only figure that it was
because of the problems she had had with Inuyasha.
He knew that she was upset quite
often when traveling with his brother, because he always ran to the
corpse. Sesshomaru
had hid himself and watched many times as she walked to the woods after Inuyasha ran off and sat down to cry. He had almost been tempted to reveal himself
because he was overwhelmed with the desire to protect her and make her
happy. He had always been furious when
he would see her in the woods crying.
It had always been a big question in
his mind, why would his brother choose the dead one over the living one? Plus Kagome had been the one that accepted
him for himself, she didn’t want him to change. The other miko
however had wanted him to become human, plus she had bound him to a tree for
fifty years and yet he chose her. He
always figured in the end that Inuyasha would come to
his senses and claim Kagome, he already considered her his.
Sesshomaru
snapped out of his thoughts when Shippo suddenly
launched himself into his lap. He looked
down in surprise at the small kit who was now cuddling
into his chest. Shippo
smiled and yawned, showing off his tiny little fangs.
“Daddy, everything is going to be ok
in the final battle with Naraku, right?” he asked
looking up at him with hopeful eyes.
“I hope so, Shippo,
I hope so,” he replied standing with the kit in his arms.
He looked over to see Rin sound asleep in Kagome’s arms. The sun was going down,
they had worn the children out. They had
actually spent most of the day with them, not a care in the world. Kagome looked up and smiled at him as she
slowly stood with Rin in her arms. They walked slowly to the castle to put the
children to bed. He could see the small
amount of doubt in her eyes.
She had heard the question and it
brought back to mind all of her worries.
Sure she had convinced Kagura to help them by
hiding, but would it be enough? She
hoped so for the children’s sake and Sesshomaru’s. She didn’t want to leave her children, but
the chances were that she would die in the end.
Most of the possible outcomes she had seen she ended up giving her life
to save everyone else.
Sesshomaru
knew that she was thinking of the bad chances again. He could feel the unease in her aura through
their link. He would have to try to ease
her fears later, after they put the children to bed. He would do whatever it took to make sure
that the outcome was good. They walked
up the stairs and both went different ways to put the children to bed. Kagome went to Rin’s
room and Sesshomaru went to Shippo’s.
After Kagome tucked Rin in and gave her a good night kiss she went to Shippo’s room to kiss him goodnight. Sesshomaru stood in
the doorway watching as she kissed the little kit. He could see the fear and doubt in her eyes
as she looked at her son. He knew she
feared that she would end up leaving him alone.
After she stood and walked to the door he pulled her into his arms
trying to wipe away her fears.
Kagome felt his warmth surround her
and his aura pulsed calmingly. He was
trying to calm her with their link, pouring all of the comfort he could into
it. He didn’t release her until he felt
her relax in his arms. Then he leaned
down to kiss her forehead and took her hand walking with her to Rin’s room so he could tell her goodnight. Kagome watched from the doorway.
She swore to herself
if nothing else she would at least make sure that he survived to take care of
the children. She would not leave them
completely alone and Shippo had grown fond of Sesshomaru. It
wasn’t the same attachment as he had to her, but at least he would not be
completely alone. After a few minutes Sesshomaru joined her at the door and they walked together
down to the dining hall.
“You don’t need to worry.
We will find a way to get through this,” Sesshomaru
said taking her hand and sending her comforting waves through their link.
“There are no guarantees, but I will make sure that at least
one of us survives for the children,” she said leaning into him.
“No, we will both survive,” he said insistently.
By then they had reached the dining hall and he opened the
door for her. When they entered everyone
that was already in there rose. Sesshomaru helped Kagome to her seat then took his. After they were both seated everyone else
took their seats as well. They all sat
in silence until the servants brought out the trays of food. Kagome and Sesshomaru
served themselves first then the others followed suit.
To Kagome a lot of this still seemed weird, but Sesshomaru insisted that it was a sign of respect. They all stand until the Lady and Lord are
seated, the Lady and Lord get their food first and nobody else started eating
until the Lady and Lord did. She didn’t
really like it, but she went with it because of Sesshomaru. After they started eating conversations
started, it was like a small lull of voices.
Everyone speaking to those around them in low voices.
Kagome listened politely as everyone talked happily. She glanced over to Kouga
and Inuyasha and couldn’t help but smile, they seemed
so happy. Suddenly, everything seemed
like it was sounding from far away and Kagome felt something speaking to her
from the back of her mind. Sesshomaru noticed that Kagome had gone unusually still and
her eyes seemed out of focus.
Without drawing the attention of anyone else in the room he
ordered a servant to bring their food up to his chambers. He then helped Kagome to her feet and led her
out, trying his hardest not to jolt her out of her trance. Once they were out of the dining hall he
picked her up and carried her to their chambers. He lay her on the
bed and sat down beside her to wait for her to come to.
He only waited about ten minutes when she suddenly jolted up,
her eyes once again in focus. She looked
around in confusion and he pulled her into his lap when he smelled fear enter
her scent. Of course she would be a
little scared, she spaced out in one room and came to
in another.
“I brought you to our chambers when I noticed you went into a
trance,” he whispered to her as he rocked her in his lap, “What happened?”
“It… it was Midoriko she was
talking to me,” Kagome whispered nuzzling into his chest.
“About what?” he gently pressed.
“She was telling me of a few powers I contain that I was not
aware of, ones that may help. She also
told me that the final battle draws near.
I can feel it, Naraku is growing
impatient. We have but three days before
he decides to come back to the field, and if he does then he will find us. We have to find a place to fight,
somewhere away from the castle, that way he will be nowhere near our children
or the palace.”
“You think he will find the palace even with my barrier in
place?” Sesshomaru asked, feeling uneasy.
“I don’t know. I don’t
think so, but I don’t want to take that chance.
I don’t want him anywhere near our children,” she replied her tone
rising a little.
“I agree with you there,” Sesshomaru
said thinking for a minute, “You know what, I think I know of the perfect
place.”
“You know a place where we can lure him?” she asked in a
hopeful tone.
“Yes, I will take you tomorrow and you can get a layout of
the land.”
“Ok, I will cover our aura’s so we
don’t attract him until we’re ready,” she said giving him a small kiss on the
chin.
“Good, did Midoriko tell you
anything else that may help us?”
“Yes, actually she did.
My faith in Kagura is well placed. She will stick to her end of the deal and Midoriko also showed me how to free both her and Kanna,” Kagome said smiling.
“Good, they will finally be free and that is two less demons
we have to worry about. Two of the more
powerful ones at that,” Sesshomaru said smiling.
He could feel Kagome’s excitement through their mating
bond. He knew she was happy to be able
to help Kagura and Kanna. Kagura had
approached him before asking for help to free herself from Naraku. He had turned her down at the time and was
actually a little rude about it, but now that he was with Kagome he actually
felt bad about it. He didn’t know why,
but since he was with Kagome he felt bad about a lot of his past actions.
He figured it was because Kagome had shown him how to feel
all of the emotions that he had suppressed for so long. It was like she had freed him from a
cage. Her love had unleashed all of it, he no longer only felt cold indifference and an odd loneliness.
He pulled Kagome closer to him unable to find the words to express all he felt,
but there was still something bothering him.
“Did Midoriko show you the outcome
now that Kagura and Kanna
won’t be there?”
“No, and I have not had another vision either. It seems we are truly left to fate alone
now,” she said sadly, looking down.
He reached down and put a finger under her chin to make her
meet his gaze.
“Whatever comes we will deal with it. Everything will be ok,” he said in a tone
more confident than he actually felt, “Now why don’t we finish dinner?” he
asked changing the subject.
He didn’t want Kagome to dwell on the outcome of the final
battle right now. When he felt her nod
against his chest he pulled the string to call the servants. Within a minute there was a knock on the door
and the servants came in with their trays, the food already warmed up. They set the trays on the table by the
fireplace and when he nodded they left without a word.
He led Kagome to the table and helped her to sit down before
he sat at the other side. They both ate
in silence pondering the information Midoriko had
given Kagome. In three days Naraku would arrive here which meant they had less than
three days to get ready for the final battle.
Tomorrow they would take a look at the field Sesshomaru
had chosen then they would be back to hard training to get ready.

Everyone else in the dining room didn’t notice that Kagome
and Sesshomaru had left for about fifteen
minutes. They had been wondering what
had happened for about twenty minutes when Sesshomaru
entered the dining hall.
“When everyone is done eating we need to talk. Meet us in the study across the hall after
you have finished,” he said then walked out before anyone could say anything.
Everyone curious as to what was going on quickly finished
their dinner then went to the study.
When they walked in they noticed that Kagome and Sesshomaru
were already seated on one of the couches and a tray of tea was set out with
enough cups for everyone. They looked
cautiously at the Lord and Lady then made their way around to find seats. Kagome watched them as they all got
comfortable, knowing what she was about to say was going to be hard for them
all to accept.
“You all need to step up your training, in three days time Naraku is going to come to find us.”
“What?”
“How do you know this?”
“So soon?”
Kagome held up a hand to silence them all. When they were quiet she continued.
“I know this because Midoriko told
me. We don’t want the battle to happen
so close to the palace, so Sesshomaru will be showing
me a spot tomorrow. For the next two
days you need to train and prepare as best you can. Before dawn on the third day we will all go
to this place and have Naraku find us. That is where the final battle will take place. Inuyasha and Kouga you need to work on your combined attack.
Bankotsu, Jakotsu,
and Suikotsu you will be training with Sesshomaru most of the time to work on you speed and your
combined attacks. I will be working on
some other skills by myself for the most part.
This will not just be a battle with Naraku, it will be an all
out war with him as well as his low level demons.”
“What about Kagura and that creepy
child?” Bankotsu asked, the others automatically
agreeing with him.
“I have made a deal with Kagura.”
They all started to protest, but she just held up a hand to
quiet them.
“Kagura is being forced to work for
Naraku and Kanna is as
well, just in a different form. I made a
deal with Kagura to free them both. When I free them Kagura
is going to take her sister and run.
There will be no interference from them, we
have no need to worry about them. Trust
me they will no trouble. Anyway that is
all I wanted to tell you. Prepare for
the final battle, it draws near.”
With that Kagome stood to leave the room. Everyone was completely shocked by the news,
they watched as Sesshomaru followed her out. Once they had left they all remained silent
all deep in their own thoughts. They
wondered how Kagome had managed to make the deal with Kagura,
but they knew that it was pointless to ask.
Only Kagome could manage to make a deal with the evil witch.
They started to talk about strategies and training. Everyone was now starting to feel the anxiety
and adrenaline from the news. They also
knew that with such little time they needed to train hard and be ready. Inuyasha could feel
fear course through him at the thought of the battle to come, a war this was
not good. Kouga
sensed his fear and wrapped his arms around him trying to offer what comfort he
could.
Inuyasha leaned into him and gave him a weak
smile. He felt the warmth and comfort
coming off of Kouga and he felt his fear ease a
little. He always felt so safe in Kouga’s arms. Before
the incident on the island he never would have thought that he would be happy
to let someone else protect him. He had
spent his whole life protecting others or himself, he never imagined that
someone would ever protect him.
Now he knew he was a uke and he had
no problem with that. He grabbed Kouga’s hand and felt happiness course through him. His Kouga,
the only person to ever want to protect him out of true love other than his
mother. He started to pull Kouga along and they left the study. As soon as the doors closed behind them he
turned and kissed Kouga with all the passion he
possessed.
He heard Kouga gasp as he sent all
of his thoughts and emotions through their link. He had never told Kouga
everything that had happened to him through his life, but Kouga
had felt his deep hurt and sorrow at times when he thought of his past. Now Kouga knew, he
had saved him, he had given him hope. Inuyasha pulled away so they could catch their breath, both
of them panting by now.
Inuyasha yelped in surprise when Kouga suddenly scooped him up bridal style and rushed to
their room so fast that everything was a blur.
Kouga didn’t stop until they reached their
room. Then he finally put Inuyasha down so that he could lock the door, before
turning around to kiss him senseless.
After they pulled away for air Kouga
asked, “Are you ever going to tell me about your past? What caused you such pain?”
Inuyasha looked into Kouga’s
eyes for a moment before smiling gently, “After the battle with Naraku, if we are still alive, I will tell you everything.”
